(S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - Baron1898 - 05-11-2020 (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust Complete the weekly Point Task to earn 3 TPE! All written responses must be at least 200 words. All graphic responses must show at least some effort. Do not claim this TPE until it has been graded and posted to the S22 claim thread. Written responses must be posted solely in this thread and not for additional media credit. Also, if you try to build your word count by being super repetitive and rambling on, you will not get full credit. We’ve had a number of recent incidences involving PT plagiarism. If you are caught stealing someone else’s work, you will be punished as HO sees fit, including the potential loss of TPE or money. Do your own work please. This task is due next Sunday, May 17th, at 11:59 EDT. Have fun and get writing! Written Option: In 200 words, make your case for the worst draft pick of all time. How did this draft pick set the franchise back? What other effects did the pick have? Were there much better options further down the draft? You cannot discuss draft classes still on their rookie contracts, so it must be the Season 19 NSFL Draft or earlier to receive credit. Graphic Option: Visually present your choice for the biggest bust of all time and make the case for why it was such a bad pick. As always, you can link your affiliate PT: SHL; GOMHL; PBE. (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - IsaStarcrossed - 05-11-2020 I would say that Bjørn Ironside ended up being one of the biggest busts in NSFL history purely due to his ineffectiveness on the field after being a part of one of the most loaded draft classes the league had ever seen. At the time of the draft, S18 hosted at least 40 active players full of promise and possibility and yet the New Orleans Second Line settled on Ironside at 1OA. There were decent to star players who loaded up the entire front end of that draft and the Second Line took a defensive tackle who arguably was invisible on the field his entire DSFL history. After selecting him, they elected to call him up immediately due to the team being a bit weak on talent at the time. He rewarded them with a mediocre season that saw guys drafted 50 picks after him performing better. He followed this up in S19 with a similarly slow season and then finally showed a glimpse of his potential in S20. Despite having an actual impact season, the team fell short in the playoffs and proved that even when Ironside was playing somewhat well, he didn't really make a difference. Then finally in S21 after another disappointing showing, Ironside announced his retirement. First overall to retired in just four short seasons. That is about as big of a bust as you can get. (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - slothfacekilla - 05-11-2020 It is kinda wack that we can only write about season 19 and earlier, but at least the season 19 draft gives a perfect answer to this: the Chicago Butchers drafted Sweet James Jones with the sixth pick in the first round. The Butchers already had selected a wide receiver at fourth overall, but even that fact isn't really at issue here. You could maybe point to the fact that the dude's gimmick was basically what a white suburban fourteen year old thinks a rapper is. It would have given you a feeling that he may be heading towards something like the ultimate full banishment he received from the league after bringing his cringe to DM's attacking members. But really it would be tough to foresee a full on, outright ban from the entire league. So I GUESS you can give them a little bit of a pass here. Honestly, it really ends with the fact that this dude straight up told Chicago not to draft him! I heard around the league that they thought they could trade him or something, but that seems to be an extremely poor strategy to rebuild a team around. Chances are you are at best going to be stuck with a loudmouth minstrel show cosplayer at wide receiver. The much better option for Chicago was to literally ignore this player on their draft board. Hindsight is everything, but it was moves like this that doomed the old regime(s) in Chicago (I can't even remember who was GM for them at this time). It seems like Chicago won't make mistakes like this again. Code: 267 words (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - BenDover - 05-11-2020 As much as I would want to describe my former player, Ronald Watkins, as a draft bust, another player firmly stands out in my mind as a true draft bust. This player was taken during the downfall of Chicago, in the middle of Valor's reign of GM on this now seen as disastrous franchise. With the 6th overall pick in the S19 NSFL draft, the Chicago butchers selected Sweet James Jones. This player, now banned from the league, seemed to have a bright future with the "win-now" Chicago team, but things quickly turned south with this draft pick. Jones was drafted into the league by the Palm Beach Solar Bears and from the start displayed an attitude that might deter other teams, but not the Butchers apparently. After being banned from the league for numerous offenses, Chicago seemed to develop a phobia of first round picks for this incident, in turn Chicago decided to trade most of their first round picks away for what seemed like extremely lopsided trades for other teams, leading Chicago to getting inactive players and other not as good draft picks with their firsts. Overall, the pick and subsequent banning of SJJ helped to make an already snowballing franchise become worse and lead to the loss of more future assets due to the what seemed like a spree of trading away important draft picks. (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - xQCFamous - 05-11-2020 So being brand new to the league and the league having so much rich history, I had to figure out what the hell was even going on for this task, and let me tell you, it was...actually quite easy, because if you ask questions, you get answers. I have chosen to go with Marcella Toriki, formerly of the San Jose Sabrecats. When referring to the "biggest bust", it is hard to find one bigger then this for many reasons. The Sabrecats banked on Toriki being their go-to for the future, picking her 5th overall and wanting her to be the runningback that they could rely on. However, things went very, very sideways after the initial season with the team. While Toriki played great, she for whatever reason opted out of her contract after just the first year. A lot of people likely shocked, she actually ended up signing with a different team in free agency, and that is how the Sabrecats lost a 5th overall pick...for nothing. To me, that hurts, there is no assets coming back for this, the player just simply chooses to walk away from the team. If that isn't a bust, you tell me what is... The one player in particular I've seen mentioned in the shadows is Sweet James-Jones. I can't imagine what a blessing it is to be drafted in the first round, and to squander such an opportunity with threats of violence and racism is abhorrent in my eyes. Any player in this league should behave with some amount of decency, and even more so if you're an early pick. Being a first round pick means that you represent your team in a lot of ways, and it also shows your teams belief in you as a player and a person. When you have your teams hopes tied up in your pick and you choose to behave like a middle school kid on xbox live playing call of duty, you deserve the fate given to you. I can tell you right now that I would never treat anyone on this site with anything less than the utmost respect, and this user showed me what can happen when people choose to do otherwise. Sixth overall pick to banned from the league. This has to be the biggest bust. (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - morsy - 05-11-2020 To be honest I would much rather write about successful players than unsuccessful ones, it feels kind of mean to talk badly about another player and how much of a disappointment they were, especially since we'll never get their whole story. There are many reasons why a career doesn't turn out as expected and most of it is speculation. Also please be aware that I do not know the player I'm writing about personally. So the player who I think was quite the bust was Antonio Summer, a running back that was drafted fourth overall in the season 11 draft by the Yellowknife Wraiths. Not only that he was drafted in the first round as a running back, a decision that is controversial among draft experts, but he was the only player in the first round who never made it to the pro bowl. The next two running backs drafted after him, Jerrod Canton and Slim Shady, both taken in the third round, both got pro bowl call ups and in a draft that didn't have the most talent, it's extra disappointing to draft a player who didn't perform in the NSFL. In fact I can't even find any reliable numbers about him in the NSFL. It's like his career pretty much ended after he was drafted. It's hard to tell where things went wrong. It's like Summer went from an active member of the community who donated his time to good causes like speaking about mental health issues and visiting the local children's hospital to someone who didn't show up to training anymore. Unfortunately I'm too young to remember season 11 but I can see why the Wraiths drafted him at number four and I hadn't expected his career to just fade out like that either. So it's extra sad when a player who showcases a lot of positive character traits turns out to be a bust. (S22) - PT3 - Boom or Bust - AsylumParty - 05-11-2020 Undoubtedly, with no hesitation, the worst draft pick of all time was Jayce Tuck. So charming, yet so full of evil, evil, deception. Setting the Outlaws back a third round pick, and ultimately only playing a hand in their demise, Er's player, Jayce Tuck, was worse than a bust. You see, a bust is explainable. Sometimes a prospect shows ample promise, only to fall victim to inactivity. It's understandable from a GM perspective. It's impossible to maintain a perfect scouting report every year. There are bound to be mistakes. Nonetheless, while a bust is explainable, Jayce Tuck was worse. It took less than one full season before he began planting his multi farm among the new crop of rookies. In fact, Arizona's first round pick of season 2 went to an Er Multi. Is it possible Dustin Evans would have then gone in place of him, had he not been planted? Perhaps, but likely not, as it was at Er's behest that I was drafted by Arizona in the first place. Now, to elaborate on my previous point, Jayce Tuck was, admittedly, only one small part of the Er multi farm. That said, he was also the original piece, as well. He was hard working (clearly), and was in the war room after only a short time with the team. Using this power, he managed to get his multis drafted to his team, and held out for the outlaws for good measure. However, it wouldn't take but a few more seasons before his dastardly plan of evil was recognized, and he was ousted, forever tainting the history of the Arizona Outlaws. |
