*S31 ISFL Fantasy Summary - First Half Recap - Pvtpenne - 09-29-2021

8 weeks into the season, I wanted to take a look at some of the preseason fantasy rankings that were posted and how they are doing so far. As a S32 new create that was diving into fantasy I had no idea what I was doing so the rankings posted by Pat and Kotasa were super helpful as a starting point for me to evaluate the field and make my selections. At the time of me writing this I have cracked the top 10 of the leaderboard despite having never heard of Goat Tank when I found out I had the first pick for my group. To caveat this before you read further, in no way shape or form am I trying to criticize or look down upon Pat and Kotasa's rankings, like I said they were super helpful for me getting my feet wet as a new create. When you put your name out there with fantasy rankings, especially when it's for dots on a screen, you are going to be wrong about some things at the end of the year, there is no way you are going to get every call right. So if you look at this analysis and end up with the takeaway that you can't trust Pat and Kotasa's rankings, you did it wrong, their rankings are great and you suck (jk). Enough rambling, now I am going to break down each position in the analysis below. Without further adieu, let's start with the QBs.

Pat's Rankings:

Charlemagne Cortez   ARI
Mike Boss Jr   SAR
Matthias Caliban   COL
Colby Jack   YKW
Ryan Negs   PHI
Dexter Zaylren   BER
Sam Howitzer   NYS
Jackie Daytona   AUS
IsHe… ReallyInvisible   NOLA
Joliet Christ, Jr   HON

Kotasa's Rankings:

Charlemagne Cortez  ARI
Mattathias Caliban  COL
Mike Boss Jr.  SAR
Ryan Negs  PHI
Colby Jack  YKW
Jackie Daytona  AUS
Sam Howitzer  NYS
Dexter Zaylren  BER
Joliet Christ Jr.  HON

Week 8 Rankings:
Caliban  COL - 150
ReallyInvisible  NOLA - 144
Negs  PHI - 138
Jaroppolo  BAL - 135
Jack  YKW - 134
McKyle SJS  - 129
Zaylren BER  - 126
Boss Jr.  SAR - 125
Daytona  AUS - 121
Cortez  ARI - 120

The biggest surprise thus far has to be Cortez and the Arizona offense as a whole, the consensus #1 QB barely sneaks into the top 10. I wouldn't blame somebody if they dropped Cortez to waivers for ReallyInvisible who has to be the other most surprising QB to date. The NOLA QB comes in at QB2 despite being ranked 9th on one preseason list and not even ranked on the other. He is 14th out of 14 in passing yards and tied for 12th in passing TDs, but adding over 300 yards and 4 TDs on the ground has really skyrocketed his fantasy value. ReallyInvisible will be one of the first QBs off the board next year if not the unanimous first coming off of this hot rookie season. Jaroppolo and McKyle were also not ranked coming into the year but are putting together top 6 seasons at the moment. Mike Boss Jr. has also been slightly disappointing, a consensus top 3 QB is currently in the bottom half of the QBs. Preseason top 5s Colby Jack and Ryan Negs are also performing up to expectations at this point. If I had to pick one QB to be in a completely different spot after 16 weeks compared to where they are now it would be Cortez if the Outlaw offense can get it turned around. Next up are the RBs.

Mike Rotchburns  NOLA - 122

Busch Goose  BAL - 93

Death, taxes, and Goat Tank getting a giant workload, a clear leader at the RB position for fantasy. Jay. Cue. Junior. If this guy is still not on a team in your group, put in a waiver claim for him immediately. Being a borderline top 10 in one ranking and even lower in the other, Jay Cue is just barely behind Goat Tank in the RB leaderboard and very much ahead of 3rd place. Surely to be a common theme throughout this article, the Arizona players are underperforming thus far based on draft rankings. Memes and Nakamura are both still in the top 10 of the leaderboard but they were likely drafted as the RB1 on your team. Similar to Cortez, if Arizona can turn it around these guys will still be the fantasy superstars they were drafted to be. Cobra Kai and Zoe Watts, both top 4 consensus RBs are also underperforming at this point. On the flip side you have Jamar Lackson and Tre'Darius J'Vathon, both drafted as mid to low RB2s but both guys are RB1s at this point in the year. If you drafted Goat Tank at 1 and then got one of these guys at 12 you are probably set on the year. Another glaring name that you do not see on the Week 8 rankings is Madison Hayes (my personal RB2), at 84 fantasy points on the year he is RB18 on the year and 9 points outside of the top 14. On to the WRs.

Pat's Rankings:
Darren Pama  ARI
Taro Raimon   ARI
Kai Sakura  YKW
Mark Walker   YKW
Cmon Skiuuup   BER
Raphael Delacour   COL
Tugg Speedman   NYS
Sam the Onion Man   OCO
Jackson Kingston   SAR
Tychondrius Hood   BER
Videl-San  AUS
Jake Fencik/Tsuyu Asui/Killian Chambers   PHI
William Lim   COL
Eleven Kendrick-Watts   HON
Luke Quick   BAL
Zach Crossley   SJS
Saleem Spence   SAR
Mike Hunt   CHI

Kotasa's Rankings:
Kai Sakura  YKW
Jackson Kingston  SAR
Raphael Delacour  COL
Taro Raimon  ARI
Cmon Skiuuup  BER
Tychondrius Hood  BER
Videl-San  AUS
Tugg Speedman  NYS
Mark Walker  YKW
Eleven Kendrick-Watts  HON
William Lim  COL
Darren Pama  ARI
Jake Fencik/Killian Chambers/Tsuyu Asui  PHI

Week 8 Rankings:
Videl-San AUS  - 118
Mark Walker  YKW - 116
Eleven Kendrick-Watts  HON - 113
Jake Fencik  PHI - 109
William Lim  COL - 108
Jackson Kingston  SAR - 107
Cmon Skiuuup  BER - 102
Luke Quick  BAL - 101
Darren Pama  ARI - 101
Zach Crossley  SJS - 99
Raphael Delacour  COL - 99
Kai Sakura  YKW - 98
Taro Raimon  ARI - 95

Videl-San is the man. Coming into the year as a fringe top 10 ranked guy and sitting on top of the leaderboard after 8 weeks, the margin is slim but he owns the top spot. Eleven Kendrick-Watts at WR3 and Jake Fencik at WR4 are also some pleasant surprises. Both rankers pegged the PHI WR group as a group to keep your eye on because we didn't really know who was going to emerge coming into the season. Jake Fencik could very well be available in your group, if he is put in a waiver immediately. Colorado, Yellowknife, and Arizona all had some dynamic duos at receiver coming into the season and all 6 of those players are in the top 13 wide receivers at the mid way point. Like a broken record, the Arizona players (Pama and Raimon) are performing a little bit below expectation but if Arizona turns it around in the second half players that drafted these guys could skyrocket up their group. The Yellowknife duo of Walker and Sakura are both doing well, but it does seem like Mark Walker is the primary guy. Tugg Speedman and Tychondrius Hood are a couple of consensus top 10 ranked players that aren't doing well relative to their peers thus far in the season. Up next are the Tight Ends.

Pat's Rankings:
Adam Spencer   NOLA
Makoa Mahi’ai   BAL
Borgo San Lorenzo   PHI
Zack DiNozzo   OCO
Zee Rechs   YKW
Mario Messi   SAR
Nick L. Back   CHI

Kotasa's Rankings:
Mario Messi  SAR
Buffalo Hunter  COL
Makoa Mahiʻai  BAL
Zee Rechs  YKW
PBorgo San Lorenzo  PHI
Zack Dinozzo  OCO
Adam C. Spencer  NOLA

Week 8 Rankings:
Zee Rechs  YKW - 67
Nick L. Back  CHI - 55
James Lewandowski  SJS - 52
Mario Messi  SAR - 51
James Angler  SAR - 47
Gronku Muerto  BER - 45
Adam Spencer  NOLA - 43
Makoa Mahi'ai  BAL - 42

The very low scoring tight end position was pretty variable coming into the year with several young guns and a few aging and retiring vets on their way out. There was hardly any consensus at the top of the rankings and the performances through 8 weeks kind of reflects that. The dusty corpse of Zee Rechs is leading the position as Yellowknife's offense is firing on all cylinders. Both rankers had Rechs in the top 5 so it's not too crazy that he is the TE1 so far. After Rechs, the rest of the list is pretty wild. A couple of low ranked players in Nick L. Back and Lewandowski round out the top 3. A big question coming into the season was Messi or Angler as the TE1 in that Sarasota offense, and the answer so far has been por que no los dos as they both are in the top 5 for fantasy points. Look for Messi to have a huge breakout next season as Angler declines even further. A rookie in Muerto rounds out the top 6, consensus top 3 ranked Mahi'ai and Adam Spencer round out the rest of the list. Missing out on a good tight end in your draft definitely didn't break you since they score so low but if you ended up with Zee Rechs (like I did), you are definitely taking a victory lap right now.

Pat's Rankings:
Alexander Franklin   PHI
Adam Mellot   NOLA
Jaja Dingdong   SJS
Stumpy Jones   SAR
Bruce Buckley   YKW
Marc Hamel   NYS
Connor Quigley   AUS
Clark Boyd   BER
Icebox Riposte   CHI

Kotasa's Rankings:
Bob Roberts  NYS
Adam Mellott  NOLA
Bruce Buckley  YKW
Jaja Ding Dong  SJS
Stumpy Jones  SAR
Clark Boyd  BER
Alexander Franklin  PHI

Week 8 Rankings:
Ananda Adyan  BER - 132
Pepelegs Johnson  BAL - 128
Cade Williams  NOLA - 125
Icebox Riposte  CHI - 124
Alexander Franklin  PHI - 120
Jaja Ding Dong  SJS - 120
Marc Hamel  NYS - 120
Stumpy Jones  SAR - 120

A high scoring, low variability position, now we are looking at the Offensive Line. Some surprises here at the top with Ananda Adyan, Pepelegs Johnson, and Cade Williams comprising the top 3 while not being ranked at all themselves. I'm really not sure what the takeaway here is, Adyan is the top TPE OL on his team with a full user OL, Pepelegs is a rookie with less than 500 TPE but the only user OL on his team, and Williams is fairly high TPE but he's the OL2 on his own team. My only suggestion here is if you have guys like Bob Roberts or Adam Mellott, drop them and pick up somebody near the top of the list because those guys aren't the OL1 on their own team so far this year. Man, this is a crazy position.

Pat's Rankings:
Cade York   ARI
Jacob Small   SAR
Taipan Pete   NOLA
Dallas Dole   OCO
Blago Kokot   YKW
Jean-Jacques Leroy    AUS

Kotasa's Rankings:
Blago Kokot  YKW
Sam Sidekick  CHI
Cade York  ARI
Jacob Small  SAR
Jean-Jacques Leroy   AUS
Matthew McDairmid  SJS
Lux Opal  COL

Week 8 Rankings:
Blago Kokot  YKW - 91
Jacob Small  SAR - 88
Jean-Jacques Leroy  AUS - 73
Dougie Smalls  NYS - 73
Sam Sidekick CHI  - 70
Paul Monitor  BAL - 67
Cade York  ARI - 67

Blago Kokot and Yellowknife have been great, not too surprising to see him on top. Jacob Small is not far behind but there is a bit of a drop off after those 2 and a close grouping in points for Kickers 3-7. Yellowknife and Sarasota are dominating the league in points scored as teams so it's not surprising that their kickers are far outpacing the pack in fantasy points. That second tier is a mix of names that were highly ranked and names that weren't even considered. A name to keep an eye on from this second tier is Cade York, like a broken record if Arizona can pick it up in the second half and play more like they did last year he might explode up this list (or he could stagnate if they are scoring 6 TD's a game and not kicking field goals).

Pat's Rankings:
Arizona Outlaws   ARI
Colorado Yeti   COL
Sarasota Sailfish   SAR
Berlin Fire Salamanders   BER
Austin Copperheads   AUS
New York Silverbacks   NYS

Kotasa's Rankings:
Colorado Yeti  COL
Arizona Outlaws  ARI
Philadelphia Liberty  PHI
Sarasota Sailfish  SAR
New York Silverbacks  NYS
Berlin Fire Salamanders  BER
Austin Copperheads  AUS

Week 8 Rankings:
Baltimore  BAL - 128
Berlin  BER - 127
New York  NYS - 117
Austin  AUS - 98
Colorado  COL - 94
(i hit the 200 image limit so apologies to Chicago, Sarasota, and Yellowknife because you don't get your team icon here)
Chicago   - 88
Sarasota   - 86
Yellowknife  - 84

Baltimore? Baltimore! Yes a below .500 team with the 2nd most points allowed is leading the ISFL in fantasy points for defenses. Luckily for them points against isn't a tracked stat in ISFL fantasy compared to real fantasy. Notably Baltimore also has the 2nd least sacks but they lead the league in fumbles and picks. Their league leading interception total is inflating by a single 4 pick game out of their total 10 interceptions through 8 weeks so I'm not sure this top tier fantasy performance is sustainable for them, but we shall see. The 5 of the next 6 defenses at the midway point were consensus ranked in Berlin, New York, Austin, Colorado, and Sarasota. Something to note about Berlin is that they have scored 4 defensive TDs already after scoring a league leading 5 last year. I can't imagine they end up with 8 TDs on the year so I do expect them to regress a little bit in the second half just like Baltimore. Sarasota and Colorado are leading the league in sacks while being pretty low on turnovers, they could easily turn it around and end up a lot higher on this leaderboard after 16 weeks.

If you have read this far, bless your soul. I will look to do an end of season recap after 16 weeks and analyze not only these rankings and the leaderboard but also some ADP analysis and draft strategy and tips for S32.
