RE: (S30) Ultimus Week - Number 82 - 08-29-2021 13. Expansion Expansion Expansion! The league seems to love talking about it, but it has still not happened. Tell us why it should happen / should not happen soon? Reasons to expand? To get more international teams maybe or maybe 16 teams works better without the forced first seed win that we currently have in the playoffs. Other than that there really isn't much of a reason in my opinion since they aren't really good reasons to expand. There are a couple of reasons why I have that opinion. First off, expansion would pretty much guarantee that the DSFL would contact, having potentially 2 teams needing players as well as 14 existing teams needing to fill out their rosters with losses accrued via the expansion draft. While some may see the DSFL as kind of a waiting period, it does serve a couple of important purposes. One is to integrate new users into the league and the second is providing an opportunity to users looking to take on a general manager role a hands on experience in the DSFL. The league was many active users, but the continued/sustained health of the league is dependant on recruitment and existing users recreating. Season 22 and 23 brought in a lot of users, some of which have take a prominent role in the league and while that's great that there's more users, we're at the point of regression for those players, some of whom will not create or have gone inactive over the past few seasons. In my view, the uncertainty of how the user base will look as a chunk of the players move into retirement poses a difficult question as to how many will stick around in the future and recreate. While we could see a bunch return, we could also see only a few make their way back into the league, and if an expansion were to occur, there's that possibility that there may not be enough players to sustain 16 teams in the ISFL. Something else to consider is the impact of expansion drafts to the existing teams. In previous expansion drafts, each team could lose up to two players to expansion. Expansion drafts in my view hurt bottom teams more than top teams. This might sound weird but here's how I see it. Top teams have well rounded rosters, starting caliber players in terms of TPE and some even have depth. Losing two players while would hurt, has less of an impact than that of a rebuilding team or bottom of the ladder team that has holes who would then have additional holes to fill after losing players to expansion. While protection lists exist, they don't always mitigate that issue and this isn't touching on unprotected players on success wanting to remain on their teams. Expansion shouldn't happen, if anything it should be a wait and see type deal. I think holding off to see how the player base looks after several of the bigger draft classes such as S22, S23 and S24 look might be a good idea and probably something that's already being looked at by the expansion committee. The World Football Association was established last season and is currently playing out for the first time. What do you think about the WFC as a whole and how it has been shaping out. Do you think it will end up a success? World Football Championship is a nice idea. Pretty much builds on the Team USA vs Team World event that was done previously. I think it's a nice event, although it is somewhat gone under the radar as far as the coverage of results goes. I think the event is great and perhaps will lead to more users creating players that are born outside North America since there's more of an incentive to pick a birthplace outside of that region. I didn't really get to be part of Team World back then the Team USA vs Team World event was a things since my player was behind some great safeties, so this event is a chance to get to play and be part of the Asia Pacific region which is really nice. Naturally one of the concerns would be the regions and the players. With the majority of the players being concentrated in the United States it would be a question over how well other regions would compare to one another given some areas may have a greater depth of talent to draw from. The addition of the free transfer was a nice idea and help bridge the gap for some regions who perhaps lacked the talent in certain positions or even for players who may not have been in line for a starting gig in their original region. Overall, it's a pretty cool thing that's been set up, I guess the one thing that I would've changed would be to have it done a few seasons earlier so I'd selfishly would get some prime years in with the APAC rather than the twilight years. I think it will be successful and it's a nice touch to recognise the international player base in the league while also giving some people a hands on experience with managing a roster and strategy. Code: 309 words RE: (S30) Ultimus Week - Alucas - 08-29-2021 25. Imagine your current position was not available to be picked when you created your player. What other position would you have picked, and why? When I was first creating I had to toss up many positions and which I would like to find myself in, I was interested in sacking the quarterback and being a general overall disruptive force and linebacker seemed to be the best availiable position to acheive my goals. If the greatest defensive position of linebacker was not avaliable when I picked to create a player I would have then had a toss up between the next best positions, either a safety or a defensive tackle. I wonder if I would have gone defensive tackle and tried to keep sacking the quarterback and tackling runners or gone for the safety and tried to pick the opposing quarterback of and to be the last line of defense when runners get past. I think regardless I would have gone defensive minded as it seemed more likely to have success than to go on the other side of the ball and tried to score. I think defensive tackle would be my final choice as they have the best chance to sack a quarterback and to be a defensive disruption, I would have to put on weight and bulk up to fit the role but it would be a fun position, perhaps next time. Code: 209 Words 29. Awards have been a subject of controversy for a while in the league. Tell us your ideas on how awards process can be fixed. Awards are always a controversy regardless of the sport or the way they are chosen. There are always people who have issues with how they are decided on and if it is the correct choice. I am not sure if I can "fix" the awards process, my way of awarding awards would be to have a hybrid between having people like GM's and also perhaps the "general public" obviously this has to be done carefully. I would do this with a weighting system. The normal GM picks would have full strength and then the public could vote on the awards and these would be tallied up and given some sort of strength to the award, perhaps 25% of the total, like 10 points for a GM pick and then 2.5 for the public (based on the vote total from the public) The public would have a vote and choose who they think should win and this would be the "public pick" either something like this or just another way for the masses to voice their opinion, generally people do pick who they think should win rather than meme or pick their friends but allowing people to show who they think should win would help clear up if there was actually a consensus snub. Code: 213 Words 19. If your player had a show starring them, what would the plot be? Graphic Option: Create the cover art for your player’s show If for some reason a tv company wanted to have a show starring A.J. Lucas I would be surprised, he isn't an all star player and although he is reasonably prominent in the Baltimore Hawks locker room and city he is more of a rise and grinder than a personality player. I think if he had a show the plot would be about a behind the scenes look at an ISFL player and what goes on in his training regiment, training camps and practices and then pre-game. There would be a mic set up on most of the events to get snippets of what gets said on the defensive side of things and how he listens to his leaders on the defense to line up correctly and try to make an impact. I think it would be popular for everyone to watch as seeing how just one person can play an impact on a team would be interesting rather than focusing on the all star and stand out people. There would hopefully not be any sort of drama plot points but just a documentary style approach as to how players prepare and what their bodies go through in the day and week of a professional football player in the ISFL. Who have you met that has made your time here more fun, friendly, and exciting? Have you been satisfied with your player’s early start? What was it like being drafted for the first time? Do you have any comments or suggestions for the entire league that you think should be implemented? Honestly, I was really excited to hop into the ISFL since I was really eager to vibe with new friends and just experience that feeling of being a first gen rookie again. As I was expecting, I was really welcomed by everyone and just had a really pleasant experience so far in the league. On my first day, I received a link to the Offensive Linesman Discord, and it's a really nice place for all of the folks that play in that position. They really enjoy talking about pancakes which is super cool, but to be honest I like waffles a lot more, but that's totally fine because a lot of them tend to agree that waffles are better than pancakes! I haven't paid any attention to how my boy Beeg Beeg Yoshi has been performing in the sims, but I have faith in him and I'm sure that he's been doing just fine! There have been a lot of friendly users that have made my experience really nice, shoutout to @"simo_393" for recruiting me to the league by advertising it a bit in the Newfoundland Berserkers Locker Room (for those who don't know, the Berserkers are a team in the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League. The SHL was the first sim league that I joined, and it's a really great place, so if you're reading this and are thinking of creating, I say go for it!). Shoutout to @Sebster as well for being a great new friend that I accidentally pocket dialed last week, and also shoutout to @NicholasTheGreat for signing me onto the Bondi Beach Buccaneers as a DFA! I honestly like that as a DFA I can complete ALL of the regular tasks without having to wait to get drafted. Granted I certainly haven't completed many tasks yet, BUT I have gotten the opportunity to use my affiliate claim on a PT, which is super nice! Also, from what I heard, you can write PTs in different languages which is a really really awesome option! Granted, I'll probably write most of my PTs in English, unless I really feel like I need to practice my French! So yeah, to summarize what I have said so far, the ISFL has been a great league so far as a first gen rookie, and I am really excited to find out what my permanent DSFL team will be in the upcoming draft! It has been a really great experience so far! Code: WC: 411 (5 TPE) Code: 16. This task is exclusive to recreate/non-recreate rookies of the S31 class and later. The season is over and the draft is coming up. What do you bring to a team, and why should a team choose to take a chance on you next season? So yeah, I am really excited for the fact that the draft is coming up! It's honestly been one of my favorite aspects of being in a sim league, having gone through it before a few times (In the SHL I was drafted in the 3rd round of the Juniors draft and then a season after I was drafted in the 2nd round of the SHL draft, and in the PBE I was drafted in the 2nd round of the Minors draft and then drafted 6th overall somehow in the PBE draft!). I've definitely been talking to a bunch of scouts so far, and I would say that by all means if you draft the Beeg Beeg Yoshi, well, you'll certainly find the Locker Room posting a lot of yoshi GIFs probably. I can send over some Beeg Yoshi emotes as well for the server if that interests you. But most importantly, I think that I can provide some great vibes for the locker room, and I would say that I am a good natured user looking to make some new friends. I'll also update weekly so that the updaters won't end up getting swarmed by a season's worth of claims in one update! So basically, draft me so we can have some beeg vibes together! To me, one of the best things about sim leagues like this is the media potential. I am sure we can all agree that the storylines are one of the biggest reasons we all follow sports. The instant stories and all time classics it tells us are better than anything we can get from movies or books or games. I would like share with you all a personal example from this league. About my players first season with the Minnesota Grey Ducks: It had been a rough road for Minnesota. The last 3 seasons had not resulted in trips to the postseason and more often than not straddling the .500 record line. For a franchise that once was the cream of the crop in the DSFL, winning back to back Ultimini titles, they desperately wanted to make it back to the grand stage. They entered into the draft needing offensive help, looking for a true number one receiver. There were a lot of good options out there, Squidward Tentacles, Jason Waterfalls and Vincent Sharpei Jr (who the Grey Ducks ended up drafting in the second round). But as the combine went on, the Grey Ducks eyes quickly turned their attention to an… unlikely candidate. Mason Malone, the Quarterback out of USC. Now an inquiring mind might wonder why their attention would be in his direction. Malone was a great quarterback at USC for sure and he would go high in this draft but Minnesota would not be one of those teams. They already had Kazimir Oles Jr on the roster and he was likely their QB for the upcoming season so why look at Malone? He had just posted a 4.53 second 40 yard dash. That turned the heads of every single coach and GM in the room. That was the fastest time not just for a Quarterback but also was exceptionally even for the skill positions. Not to mention the fact that this was coming from a Quarterback that was not seen as a mobile threat or a scrambler, but a set foot on the ground field general passer. As the combine went on, Malone just continued to impress the Minnesota brass. He was quick from side to side, he was agile, he was strong and from what they heard from his coaches, he was a fine leader in the locker room. After Minnesota interviewed him, Russ Cayhill told the other Minnesota front office members: “He’s the one” *** As for Mason himself, he felt the combine had gone exceptionally well. He had earned the attention of several teams and there was a general sense in the combine that he would go high. His performances at USC, his general attitude and combine results had turned heads and his whole home town of McCall, Idaho was anxiously holding its breath, wondering where their favourite son would go. While everyone was sure he would go high, there was one question that everyone was wondering: “Would Malone still play Quarterback?” A lot of teams had asked him about his positional flexibility and if he had ever had experience in playing other positions. While Mason had never played any other position but QB, he had trained often with the skill positions players, running backs and wide receivers. The only thing was that Mason had never played those positions in an official game, either in high school or college. But his training with them, day after day in both McCall and at USC had increased his physical attributes exponentially so theoretically speaking, he could play one of the skill positions. That being said, doing so would be a massive gamble for any team to take on, a decision that may cause many teams to flinch away from drafting Malone at all. Then as draft day approached and the world watched on with interest, one team decided that Malone’s attributes and sky high potential was enough to take the risk. The Commissioner walked to the podium and announced the pick: “With the 4th overall pick in the Season 29 DSFL Entry Draft, The Minnesota Grey Ducks Select… Mason Malone, Quarterback, USC.” The entire town of McCall celebrated as if they had just won the Superbowl. Mason himself could only sit there as the tears started flowing. He had done it. He had made it to the DSFL. He was inching closer and closer to his dream of making it to the ISFL. After a weekend of partying with his hometown and his family, Mason packed up his bags and headed for Minneapolis for training camp. It was there where he would get the answer to his burning question. Based on his combine results and raw attributes, they wanted to convert Mason to Wide Receiver. Mason had said if a team can redirect his training to the role he would more than likely accept the position change and throughout camp, the Grey Ducks brass would begin his retraining into his new skill role. This wouldn’t be easy and any slips up in this training camp could result in him getting cut and being only remembered as a draft bust. As he had done many times before, he put his nose to the grindstone and began working again. With the help of his new coaches, the raw athleticism of Malone began to shine and he started to develop a good rapport with his new QB, Kazimir Oles Jr, who had first thought of himself as a mentor to the young QB as he was heading off to the ISFL soon but now was working with the young athlete to turn him into a deadly wide receiver. Malone’s hard work and determination to succeed did not go unnoticed by the higher ups of Minnesota or the media as reports began to flood in of how impressive his camp had been and how he would make for a great 2nd wide receiver for the team and how with him on the team, Minnesota could potentially look to once again make the playoffs for the first time in 3 seasons. That’s when the announcement dropped. The coaches of Minnesota had decided that not only would Mason be joining their receiver core but he would also be the number 1 receiver. A huge task for any player but this was near impossible task for a QB convert to wide receiver. The media was abuzz with questions and predictions that this was another sign of Minnesota tanking for another miracle talent in the next draft, that is until the head coach of the team, Gregory Ragg, stepped up and let his thoughts be known: “We are putting Malone at WR1 because we believe in his talents and we believe in the skills he has shown us at this camp. You can laugh at us and mock us all you please, but this decision was not made in haste or made by mistake. We will rally around Mason Malone and we will play good football.” This not only stunned the media in question but also Mason who was watching from afar. This team believed in him. For the first time in his life a team actually believed he could be the star player right off the bat. The Minnesota Grey Duck brass had no idea how much that meant to the young talent and once he heard it he made a silent vow, that he would do everything in his power to make sure that Minnesota never once regretted making that decision. Stuff like this you can't find elsewhere and that's what makes this league and indeed sim leagues in general so much fun for me RE: (S30) Ultimus Week - sve7en - 08-29-2021 12. Choose a team or player to write about that isn’t your own. What did they do well in the last season? Have they shown any drastic improvements from previous years? What could they do better? One of the descriptions for this season should have been "The Arrival of Borgo San Lorenzo", the third year tight end exploded into the national spotlight this season as he led all tight ends in receiving yards and touchdowns while not relying on excessive volume to get there. San Lorenzo completed the S30 campaign with 90 catches, just good enough for second in the league, but the capitalized on all of those touches, being the only tight end to hit 1000 yards and a 1.1 yard average increase over second and third (Angler and DiNozzo). The former University of Cincinnati Bearcat workhorse proved this season that he could be a force for any offense in the league at this point, as he surpassed and finally dumped the "project player" label that had been slapped on him since Philadelphia drafted him in S27, and he seems primed for a long career of production like this. San Lorenzo thrived in the new workhorse role, allowing young quarterback Ryan Negs numerous get out of jail free cards with his 5.6 catches per game, but also maintaining his good ball security as he earned 44 first downs, almost half his catches, and only fumbled once. In addition to this, San Lorenzo's athleticism afforded him a number of big play opportunities where he racked up 10 catches of over 20 yards, where he was almost good for one of them a game. Beyond that, he played well in protection where he allowed just one sack. San Lorenzo was a sleeper fantasy pick going into this season as well, and that quickly changed as he quickly became a hotly contested waiver pickup on his way to an astounding 151.8 fantasy points, a full 38% ahead of second place Rechs - the biggest gap between top fantasy players at the same position this season. The Ohioan will absolutely be the first TE of the board in most leagues this upcoming season, and for good reason. Moving forward, there isn't much more to ask of Borgo San Lorenzo, critics will say he lacks the open field agility to make big plays more frequently, but that's a big ask of a tight end and an unfair one to expect. San Lorenzo already excels at shedding tackles and doesn't need to improve with the ball in his hands. I would however like to see him become the true rock of an offense that he's close to achieving, and that comes with reducing those last few drops. Five drops isn't many, but it's the one aspect of his game that will keep him from being seen as one of the all time greats. 441 words 14. Describe your player and/or team’s journey through this latest season. What were the highlights? What were the lower points? What might you have done differently? What are your expectations for next season? It's a tale as old as time at this point, Madison Hayes continues to impress but at the end is let down by her size and opportunity. After an elite rookie campaign where she rocked the football world with her athleticism and explosiveness with the ball in her hands, Hayes found little improvement for a second straight year. Her efficiency has improved on the ground - her 4.4 yards per carry is good bordering on great at this point, and she once again eclipsed the 1500 total yard mark with another season of 800 yards in the air, but she's still lacking that ability to take over games that Chicago was likely hoping for. Hayes once again found herself in a spot where she lived up to the hype when she actually had the ball in her hands, but that dried up a bit. With the plan to utilize her in the passing game more, Hayes found her rushing touches limited and struggled to produce as anticipated this season through the air, dropping twice as many with the slight increase in volume, as well as finding the endzone less, converting fewer first downs, and not gaining as much per catch for a second straight season. Part of this can be attributed to the Chicago offense, where transition is occurring, but Luca Scabbia has continued to put up the same numbers that have been expected of him at this point, shifting a lot of the blame back to the consistency and overall play of the rugby convert. While her utilization might not be ideal, Hayes continues to not help the situation. Outside of her control, her build and ability don't lend themselves well to the idea of her being a three down workhorse back, and for the good of everyone involved that hasn't been attempted. However, her ability to do most offensive positions at a competent level is far from what Chicago really needs at this point. The aging O'Donnell, last in QB rating this past season, needs true weapons that make the defense adapt and commit to stopping them, and Hayes isn't that piece for the Butchers in the way that a Danny King Jr., Zoe Watts, or Tatsu Nakamura has been for their respective teams. Hayes needs to become a weapon in her own right, not relying on aging quarterbacks and WR1s to draw attention from her, if she wants to hit the bar that's been set for her. 409 words RE: (S30) Ultimus Week - Tomen - 08-29-2021 24. What other position would you have picked, and why? If I couldn't have been a defensive tackle I definitely would have created as a Linebacker because the ultimate goal with this player is to hold the career record for either sacks or tackles for loss. As a linebacker I would play as the position which can get the most of these stats in a season which should give me by far the best chance at reaching that ultimate goal. I would like to think that especially the Pass Rusher archetype would be the most helpful one for that endeavour. Considering in the new sim linebackers just get way more sacks than in the previous sim engine I imagine that the career sacks record will actually be broken and set to a higher number before I reach the magic number of 132 career sacks. Another position that I would have been interested in creating was the Wide Receiver position as I always had a sweetspot for the position and the first football player that I saw a highlight tape of was Randy Moss just being a freak of nature and doing things I didn't knew would be possible as a young. So I would have been down to chase some career receiving records if I would have created as a Wide receiver this time around. 28. Choose one existing award. Tell us why you think a certain player should win that award this season. Stats, or anything else possible should be used to support your case. For me this one is quite an easy one here. I choose the Linebacker of the Year award which should be going to Brach Thomaslacher the linebacker of the Austin Copperheads who blessed the International Simulation Football League this season with a 23 sack performance which has not been done in 23 seasons since Angus Winchester hit the same sack number back in season 7 while playing for the Orange County Otters. 23 sacks also is tied for the 3rd most sacks in a single season ever which should easily give him the frontrunner spot to get the award. He was also not too far off from the league leader in tackles being only 16 tackles behind so Thomaslacher still was the premier stopper inside the box for the Copperheads while giving opposing Quarterbacks nightmares when they would have to face him. Thomaslacher was also no slouch in getting tackles for loss since he managed to get 4 of these and also 1 interception this past season while also being able to defend 9 passes. This means he was also no liability in the passing defense of Austin. The only thing Thomaslacher could not get this regular season was a defensive touchdown which should not be too much of an issue in the eyes of the voters since his sack number was so dominating. 32.
