As a S24 draft hopeful, I look forward to the day my name is called, and I get to shake the commissioner’s hand and receive my jersey. As a ball player out of high schools in Los Angeles, it was competitive to try and get into my dream school UCLA. I had seen the coach and recruiter both some scout my high school once. At the time, I was a clean shaven chap – naïve to the wonders of having a beard. I noticed something that day that would change my life. Both the UCLA coach and scout had face sweaters of their own. Large, well groomed, shiny beards. That was the day I stopped shaving aside from grooming my upper cheeks and lower neck.

The season wore on and they both returned to scout players again. I made sure to stand on the sidelines with my helmet off as often as I could, allowing my glorious new whiskers shine under the Friday night lights. During the 3rd quarter, I saw the scout elbow the coach the couple of times and point in my direction. As they looked over at me, I made sure to stroke my face. I immediately saw the scout scribble something down on his clipboard and then stroke his own beard. On the next drive I went out and sacked the University of Washington QB for a 7 yard loss on third down to put them out of field goal range. The clipboard received some more notes.

After the game I walked by both of them, made eye contact and said “gentlemen”, nodded my head, and then proceeded to walk into the locker room. 2 days later I applied some beard oil after my shower and walked outside to get the mail. There it was – my recruitment letter asking if I wanted to join the UCLA football team.

Beard is a way of life. It gave me the confidence to be a linebacker and shoot for my dream school. Growing and keeping one was the best decision I made in high school in college. Without it, I’m not sure I would have made it this far. I love you beard.

This last draft was the first time I got to see an NSFL team’s war room during the drafting process. I had seen this at the DSFL level once before, but I’ll admit I was a little out of my depth and had a difficult time following what was going on. This time around, though, I was more familiar with the league, with the needs of the team, and with some of the prospects in the draft. We split the DSFL teams up among us and each scouted the players on the team we were assigned to and created some master lists of all players available, filtered by attributes such as positions, TPE, and stuff like that. After the scouting was finished is where the real fun began. A few days before the draft, each scout had a pretty good idea of who they wanted to take in what picks. It was fun seeing us going back and forth and arguing over which players we wanted to take. We were all respectful of each other, but it was clear that we all had different opinions and rankings of the players. It was exciting as picks and trade offers came in and I tremendously enjoyed the experience. I feel we had a strong draft and that it put us in a good position to be more competitive over the next few seasons.

Looking back at my career, one of the biggest moments of shock was when I heard my named called in the 5th round by the Austin Copperheads in the Season 21 NFL Draft. I still remember the surprise, I was sitting there with my family and this reporter who was writing a day in the life article about me, and I was just starting to dig into my fourth bowl of cereal of the night when the commissioner walked onto the stage and announced “With the 50th overall pick, the Austin Copperheads select, Tree Gelbman, Tight End.” It was surreal, I never really considered myself to be a mid round draft pick. My time in that first season with Kansas City was pretty rough, I had a great statline but I wasn’t really developing as a player that well. I found my groove towards the end of the season for sure but that draft pick wound up being a call for motivation. I had something to play for, I had a team that clearly saw something in me and wanted me to be a part of their future. Unfortunately my tenure with Austin was a complex situation that resulted with me not playing a single snap for them, but I owe them my career for keeping me motivated in a situation where I felt rather lacking.

Going into the S22 NSFL Draft, I didn't really expect to be drafted that high. I wasn't earning much, I wasn't very vocal in any discord servers, except for the Myrtle Beach's, and I had position switched from linebacker to safety that I don't think many people noticed. So when I was drafted in the seventh round by San Jose, I was more surprised/excited than anything because, even though the seventh round isn't very high, I still expected to be drafted later. As for an impact on my player, it did more good than bad. Being drafted lower allowed me to be sent down and develop my skills a bit more better prepare me for the NSFL, and it set the expectations for me fairly low, because no one really expects a late round pick to perform well, so you can't really be a "bust" in the seventh round. Overall I'd say my NSFL draft experience was a good one, it set a low benchmark for me to either meet/underachieve, in which people will just say,"hey what can you do, he was a seventh round pick," or I can try my hardest and be the steal of the draft

I’m going to take a bit of a different approach to this one. Instead of talking about getting drafted, I want to talk about my first draft as a GM. Coming into my very first draft, I had a very active role within my team’s war room with scouting and planning. We had a game plan, and we knew who we wanted. Except I wasn’t GM yet. No, that little tidbit happened the day before the draft started. I was lucky to have been mentored by some very wise individuals otherwise I would have been completely lost. The first pick of my career was a very easy one. It was no surprise that we wanted to bring @Sermokala home, and when he fell to us at 6OA, we snapped him up right away. The second pick of the draft was where it got interesting. We had been hoping that one of two players would drop to us at 14, but as it would happen, they went 9 and 10 overall respectively. When it got to 14, both our guys were gone. At that point, we had to make a call – with a depleted defense, and a draft which was absolutely lacking in defensive players, we chose to draft for quality over quantity. We moved our 2nd and our 5th round picks to pick up one of the highest players on our draft board, and hopefully made their night. That was my first “big draft moment” as a GM.
