RE: (S25) - Ultimus Week - slate - 11-14-2020

In conjunction with @Mojojojo , I will be breaking down the "Mt. Rushmore" of the Sarasota Sailfish history. While Mojo is looking at the 4 defensive players who have had the largest impact on the franchise's relatively short history, I will be looking to construct an offensive Mt. Rushmore consisting of the 4 offensive players who have brought the largest contributions to the team. This will be looking only at offensive players, not considering contributions in other phases of the game or contributions from the users behind those players. Notably, this results in the exclusion of Frostbite, who sux lmap.

While Frost is undoubtedly on Sarasota's Mt. Rushmore due to his contributions as team general manager -- and while his player, Raphtalia Chan / Dax Frost, has been a mainstay for the team for a while and put up solid offensive stats as well as great returning stats (likely contending for the ISFL Returner of the Year award this season) -- the solely offensive contribution of Raphtalia Chan / Dax Frost on the field is not quite up to par in comparison to some of the other offensive juggernauts that have driven the team's success.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let's get to the

SAR Sarasota Offensive Mt. Rushmore SAR

1. Dexter Banks II - QB (and WR) ( @TropicaliaCC )

Quarterback is the most important position on offense, and Dexter Banks II has been the Sailfish quarterback for 3 of the team's 4 seasons of existence. There really wouldn't need to be much more beyond that to cement Banks's place on the team's offensive Mt. Rushmore, but luckily for both Banks and the team there is so so much more. During only 3 seasons of quarterbacking the Sailfish, Banks has amassed 13,285 passing yards and 86 TDs, as well as an offensive player of the year award in Season 24 and undoubtedly more awards to come after his outstanding Season 25 campaign. Banks performed as one of the best QBs in the ISFL during his short time with the team and drove the offensive engine of a team that scored 25.4 points per game during his tenure. This included a team that scored the 2nd most points in the league in Season 24 and the most points of any team in the league in Season 25.

Although Banks earns his spot on this Mt. Rushmore due to his play at QB, he was originally drafted to the team as a WR from the Orange County Otters in the Season 22 Expansion Draft. Before switching to quarterback after the Sailfish's inaugural season, he initially maintained his WR position and performed admirably there, leading the team in receiving yards. While that may not be the most prominent memory of Banks's Sarasota career, the fact that he excelled in two positions only goes to further strengthen his legacy and impact on the team.

2. Rayne Gordon - WR ( @RainDelay )

While Banks was the team's leading receiver in Season 22, he was only slightly ahead of teammate Rayne Gordon, who amassed 877 receiving yards and 4 TDs in the inaugural season compared to Banks's 939 and 2. After Banks took over as the team's QB it left the door wide open for Gordon to take over as his primary target, and Gordon made the most of that opportunity by immediately recording a stellar 1,282 yard, 11 TD season to cement him on the map of best receivers in the league. With the emergence of other receiving stars on the team (to follow on this same list), Gordon has taken a slight back seat, but given the pass heavy offensive approach led by Banks this has still given Gordon more than enough to work with.

At the end of Season 25, Gordon is presently the career receiving yardage and receiving touchdown leader for the Sailfish with 4,247 receiving yards on 239 receptions and 31 touchdowns. Holding franchise career records in two of the main three receiving categories is definitely sufficient to earn a place on the offensive Mt. Rushmore of this young franchise.

3. Michael Witheblock - WR ( @sakrosankt )

While Banks has been a prolific receiver for Sarasota stretching back to the early days of the franchise, it's Witheblock who currently has the spotlight shining on him at the WR position. Although Witheblock did play in Seasons 22 and 23, he recorded just over 1,000 yards across the two seasons combined. However, in the second year of Banks's tenure as the team's QB, Witheblock emerged as a production monster, reeling in over 1,300 yards receiving in each of the past two seasons combined with 19 total touchdowns.

While he doesn't currently hold any receiving records for Sarasota, it is clear that if Witheblock continues on his current pace that will be all but a sure thing. If that wasn't enough, Witheblock won the Season 24 ISFL Offensive Breakout Player of the Year award, the only postseason award won by a Sailfish offensive player besides Banks. His incredible emergence and promising trajectory assure him a spot on the offensive Mt. Rushmore for the Sailfish.

4. James Angler - TE ( @tMuse )

I talked about Gordon holding 2 of the franchise's career receiving records, but did you know that Angler actually holds the Sarasota Sailfish career record for receptions? Despite not even being on the team's roster in their inaugural season, over just the last 3 seasons Angler has amassed a staggering 252 catches for 3,500 yards and 16 touchdowns. Like Witheblock, Angler forms a key piece of the young offensive core that Sarasota will be relying on as they transition to a post-Banks future at the quarterback position. As the greatest tight end to play for the Sailfish and a key piece of the elite Sarasota passing offense (called the SAR Raid by some), Angler rounds out the Sarasota offensive Mt. Rushmore.

Tier 3: Written/Graphics Tasks
16) Create an argument for your own player, or for someone else on your team, as to why they should be nominated for awards. Lay out their stats or compare them to other contenders. Make a convincing case.

For Kicker of the Year for Season 25, I'd have to nominate Venus Powers. This season, Venus connect on 49 our of 49 extra point attempts while also converting 35 of 36 field goal attempts. Only 3 kickers managed to hit 100% of their extra point attempts, Powers, Fencik and Louis. Both Powers and Fencik played 16 games while Louis only made 7 appearances this season. Comparing attempts between Powers and Fencik, Powers comes up on top having attempted and converted 12 more extra points this season. In terms of extra points, Venus Powers leads the pack.

Looking at field goal percentages, 3 players hit 100% of their field goals this season, McDairmid, Hunt and Louis with Powers the next best with 97.2%. As mentioned previously, Louis made 7 appearances this season so while Louis did have a perfect season they played less than half the games of the other kickers. McDairmid was 23/23 on field goals while Hunt converting 27/27 field goal attempts this season. Powers missed 1 field goal this season going 35/36 but when you factor factor in the volume of extra point and field goals attempts Powers had compared to her peers this season that Powers does deserve to be nominated for Kicker of the Year. It certainly wouldn't be a stretch to suggest that Powers would be the favourite to take home the award either.

RE: (S25) - Ultimus Week - Guriinwoodo - 11-14-2020

15) My experience in the ISFL thus far has been really engaging and entertaining from a player aspect. I have long wanted a league to supplement my main sim league in the PBE and this league seems to be a welcome home for me. The team that drafted me, the Tijuana Luchadores; seems like the place to be! There's a lot happening in the discord, the GMs seem quite engaged and the success that we saw on the field wasn't too shabby either! Seems a bit unfair that I stumbled my way onto a team that won the Ultimini my waiver year, but I'm certainly not complaining!

Creating my own wiki was unique in the sense of how computer illiterate I am. While the instructions were directly in front with me for what to do, my eyes apparently did not know where to look, my mouse seemingly did not click where I wished it to and my keys were the wrong keys to type. Whatever the issue was (and it was most certainly on my end)... boy the wikipedia was tough to create. However it was one of the best experiences I've had on any sim league. What a nifty idea, kudios to whoever came up with the original idea for having the wikipedia.

Couldn't tell you what it was like to be drafted for the first time! Being picked up on waivers was quick and painless. Really enjoyed the interactions I've had with the folks in my various LRs though.  Myth has been awesome and a tremendous resource for me to access whenever I'm confused or not understanding an aspect of the league. Guitar Master has been equally as cool, he's always really fun to talk to and livens up the Locker Room whenever he's on. Other guys in the Locker Room that have been awesome are JPach and Not Ben, but there are so many more than I can name. Awesome locker room overall and same with the KCC locker room as well.

Some suggestions I would make for the ISFL... hmm. That's a toughie! My main suggestion would probably be to implement a more systematic approach to rookie mentors. In the SHL and PBE for example, every create is contacted by a rookie mentor. The rookie mentors will contact the player immediately and give them various resources that they can access to ease their transition into the league. They also offer their own time and expertise to the rookie and act as the rookie's first impression into the league.

26) This may be a bit controversial, but in my opinion the person who deserves the playoff MVP is NationalSimulation FootballLeague, also known by his username @SDCore. While defensive MVPs are quite rare (looking at you Charles Woodson), I think NS FL wins here for two reasons. The first reason is that there simply were no standouts in the playoffs for Tijuana. Our quarterback played a good game (not great), and we had a WR who earned over 100 yards in the championship game. We also had a DE make a key sack when we needed it most. However, NS FL was the key game changer here in my opinion. With the Ultimini on the line and Tijuana down by 6 in the fourth quarter after just going three and out; NS FL (the absolute legend) came away with a key interception that led to a Tijuana touchdown and shortly thereafter, the game! Without NS FL, I don't think that the Luchadores win this game. For that heroic effort in addition to his 5 tackles and pass deflection, he deserves the Playoff MVP and the gameball.

18) Choose your favorite non-playoffs game of this season, whether your own team or another. Explain what was so special and why the winner ultimately came out victorious, including key players and moments.

For the Dallas Birddogs, there were no playoff games this season... and every win could be considered a special one because they came so few and far between. The team struggled to get momentum and was often plagued with poor sim luck in combination with call-up woes, resulting in several close match-ups that ultimately added another L to the board. In the second half of the season they managed just four wins.

If I had to pick just one of those games as a “favorite”, I think I would choose week 8 against the Minnesota Grey Ducks. While it was not the most flashy win, it was nonetheless a satisfying one as the rivalry with Minnesota seemed to be fierce this year. Cobra Kai had another amazing game, recording 121 yards over 27 attempts and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Sirdsvaldis Miglaskems also notched a touchdown in the backfield committee early in the game.

Caliban had one of his better showings of the season, throwing 0 interceptions (which was a relief in itself given that he led the league with 17 on the season) and got plenty of support from his receivers Smith and Callous, who each logged over 72 yards during the game. The defense played good as well, with Leaking leading the game in tackles again, while Mann, Slammu, Kirkland, Berto, and Francis each found numerous ways to chip in against the Ducks offense.

The game ended 23-7 in favour of the Birddogs.

28) Select any player who was drafted in the back half of a DSFL or ISFL draft. Show how that player has outperformed their draft position, or how they will soon do so. You cannot write about your own player.

L’Gazzy Burfict was selected in the tenth round of the season 24 DSFL draft at 77th overall by the London Royals. Around the time of the draft he had a fairly respectable 89 TPE, but it was lower than other available linebackers on the board that went earlier in the draft. Today, Burfict is tied for third most TPE among linebackers with LancedJack, who was selected 8th overall, while following close on the heels of Guy Fields, who was selected 14 overall.

This season, Burfict recorded 139 tackles, making him second only to the Dallas Birddogs’ Richard Leaking. He also tied for most sacks with Tony Yeboah, recording 11 on the season.  Burfict also logged a respectable 5 TFLs, forced 2 fumbles, had 1 interception, and 9 pass deflections.  The 77th overall pick is more than likely going to make his way onto the awards ballot for linebacker of the year, proving his worth well beyond his DSFL draft position.

Burfict’s work with the London Royals did not go unnoticed, and his draft position in the ISFL draft increased when he was selected in the third round by the Arizona Outlaws. It seems likely that he’ll continue to perform well and exceed everyone’s expectations.

RE: (S25) - Ultimus Week - thecanadiancanuck - 11-15-2020

SHL Affiliate Task - 2.5 TPE (username over there is boom)

Task 16 (2.5 TPE):

The Offensive Rookie of the Year award in the DSFL should go to running back Cobra Kai of the Dallas Birddogs. With starter Zoe Watts headed up to the ISFL, the Birddogs needed a strong option in the ground game, and they got it in Kai. On a team that heavily struggled to move the ball through the air thanks to a down season from Mattathias Caliban in which the QB threw for just 1988 yards, 8 touchdowns and 17 picks, Cobra Kai put up the third-most yards in the DSFL with 1482 yards on 278 attempts, good for 5.3 yards per attempt, which was the highest among starting RBs in the DSFL. Dallas had a pretty decent defense and were 3-9 in one-score games, so it's not unreasonable to think that with their defensive performers like Dick Leaking, the rookie tag-team of Pope Francis and Primo Berto on the defensive line, and two great cornerbacks in Byron Blackwell and rookie Slurms McKenzie, Dallas could have made the playoffs on the back of Cobra Kai and Sirdsvaldis Miglaskems' running game if Caliban didn't throw so many picks. Comparing to other contenders for OROY, while Jackie Daytona had a great season for Myrtle Beach, it should also be considered that they got to play 6 games against teams in their conference that finished with a combined 12 wins.

Task 26 (2.5 TPE)

The playoffs MVP has to be Tijuana Luchadores rookie wide receiver Quavious McGrady. Tijuana, a team that barely got into the playoffs at 6-8 due to a terrible DSFL South division, had to play both the semifinal and championship games on the road. In the semifinal game against Myrtle Beach, the game was tightly contested throughout the day with neither team able to get much going in offense and fewer than 450 combined passing yards. The run game didn't produce much either, with neither side able to break off any long runs. That's where McGrady came in. The rookie wideout for Tijuana put up 7 catches and 104 yards, culminating in a game-winning 25-yard touchdown strike from Mike Boss Jr. in overtime to send the Luchadores to the championship game. In the championship game, McGrady didn't gain as much yardage with only 91 yards on 8 catches, but he was a top threat in the redzone, catching a pair of short first-half touchdowns from Boss to give the Luchadores and early lead that they never surrendered. The honourable mention for this award would be Mike Boss Jr., the quarterback for the Luchadores. In the championship game, he was electric, with 17 of 24 attempts completed for 162 yards, four touchdowns, and no picks. The reason I didn't pick him over McGrady was because Boss wasn't very good in the championship game and didn't rack up a lot of yards.

Task 30 (2.5 TPE)

Neither expansion team had a very good opening season, with the Berlin Fire Salamanders finishing with a 3-13 season and the New York Silverbacks just ahead of them at 4-12. Starting with New York, their offense was actually pretty good. Starting quarterback Sam Howitzer was able to sling the rock with 27 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions and the fifth-highest passer rating in the league. Jackson Kingston had a 1,300 receiving yard season with 15 touchdowns, while rookie Sean Snyder was just behind him with 966 yards and 8 touchdowns, giving Howitzer a reliable pair of receiving threats to throw to. The running game was pretty good, with 2064 team rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. Leading the way here was veteran Ashley Owens, who led the entire league in rushing yards with 1542 yards and 6 touchdowns. So where's the issue? The defense was fairly mediocre, with the second-most points allowed in the league, and overall couldn't keep the opposition out of the end zone enough. If New York can acquire another reliable receiving option to augment Kingston and Snyder, get better defensive playmakers, and improve their below-average special teams, they should be in good shape for the future. Looking at Berlin, meanwhile, the offense looked more suspect with the fewest points scored in the league. Starting quarterback Nick Kaepercolin threw for only 3213 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 21 picks, the highest number in the league. Berlin had two decent young WRs in Dre Matthews and Susan Cash Jr. catch 8 touchdowns each, but overall only 3 players on the team broke 500 receiving yards. In the running game, Berlin had two solid options in Danny King and Joseph Petrongolo who each got around 1000 yards each. On the defensive side of the ball, the Fire Salamanders were okay, but didn't produce nearly enough turnovers to make up for the offense's struggles. Berlin has some decent young skill players and a good offensive line, but they need to figure out their situation at quarterback and get players to make plays on the ball on the defense.

RE: (S25) - Ultimus Week - r0tzbua - 11-15-2020

8) Awards season is a big part of the offseason festivities. Take the stand, in 400 words or more, for one or more players that are not your own, and argue why they should receive awards glory. They can be your teammates or anyone in the league. How did their stats and on the field contribution contribute to their case this year?

I would like to take a stand and argue for one of my own teams players this season again. But it’s not a Runningback, or a Quarterback, or even a great defensive player with amazingly flashy stats. I will push for a kicker. Yes, you heard right, a kicker! And I want to build or rather reaffirm the case for Venus Powers as Kicker of the Year. Powers may not have attempted a lot of 50+ yard kicks - or to be more precise: none - but the general field goal percentage was out of this world. Out of 36 field goals attempted Venus made 35 for a 97,2% field goal percentage. That may sound not too crazy, but let that sink in a bit: In the whole season Powers only missed one field goal. ONE! Next highest on field goal percentage are Dasistwirklicheinnachname and Kokot with around 96.5% and both attempted way less field goals with 28 and 29 respectively which is quite a big difference and still they both still have a lower percentage.

Add on top of that that Venus did not miss a single point after attempt the whole season. For the longest time Venus was working on adding to the record breaking streak of most consecutive field goals made, which by itself should already be a reason to be right up there for the award, not even counting the percentage or the perfect extra points percentage.

The only missed field goal Venus had was a 46 yard field goal in Week 13 on the road against the New York Silverbacks which did not matter because the game was lost anyway and this one would not have made a difference. Other than that single one you can look but there are no other ones on the stat sheet.

One can’t even argue that it was only because Powers did not have a lot of attempts, because she is certainly up there in the top five of total attempts with the highest number of attempts only being five more than Powers. At the same time the percentage with the higher number of attempts drops hard to under 90% for all of them. So for myself there is no question that Venus Powers was the best kicker this year and totally should win that award without any questions asked, because simply looking at volume or super long kicks does not tell the whole story with this season for her.

18) Choose your favorite non-playoffs game of this season, whether your own team or another. Explain what was so special and why the winner ultimately came out victorious, including key players and moments.

One of my favourite non playoff games this season was the Week 15 matchup of the Honolulu Hahalua against the Orange County Otters. It was the later half of the season and the playoff hope for my Hahalua was still alive, but they needed to win this game. The first half started promising with the Hahalua going into an early lead with a touchdown on the first possession of the game. After some great passes including a 43 yard one to Podolak, Ayers ran the ball in for the 7-0 lead after the successful extra point. Orange County answered with a field goal, but Honolulu quickly built up their lead with a field goal as well.

The second quarter did not see much action other than another field goal by Honolulu to go up 13-3 and building on their lead. In the third quarter Orange County was able to score their first touchdown, with Honolulu answering with their own one shortly after.

It came down to the wire in the last quarter when OCO score on two possessions in a row and equalize to a 20-20 score. With their playoff hopes on the line and 6 minutes to go in the last quarter Honolulu had to pull together one last drive to score. After a long drive that ended with a Powers field goal from 21 yards out OCO had one more chance. There drive was unsuccessful though and Honolulu pulled off the upset win on the road against the conference leading Otters.

Venus Powers was crucial in the game with their 3 field goals including the game winner in the last part of the game, with a great general defensive showing on Honolulu as well with Kackpoo recording 8 tackles and Fields recording 7 tackles, 1 sack and 2 defended passes with one of them in the last drive of the game which may have been the showstopper for Orange County.

30) Reflect on the two expansion teams. How did their first seasons go? What were their key strengths and weaknesses, and how are they poised to improve in seasons to come?

The Berlin Fire Salamanders and New York Silverbacks both had interesting seasons which started out quite differently but ended up around the same in the end. Their roads to what lead to their records are interesting to look at. Right in the first week of the season Berlin and New York battled in New York with Berlin grabbing their first win of the season against their expansion rivals. For the Silverbacks that was the start to a few rough weeks in the beginning of the season where they lost ten straight games, a lot of them by only a score or two, so no total blowouts, but still a horrible start for them. They did not lose faith though and started winning games with their Week 11 win against the Arizona Outlaws and then went on to win 3 straight. After that in the last 3 games they were able to grab one more win against the future Ultimus winners San Jose.
Berlin on the other hand started stronger with grabbing their first two wins in the first few weeks of the season, but falling off later with losing a lot of their games by a larger margin than the Silverbacks had. In the end they ended the season with the worse of the two records.

Both of them hopefully are on track for a brighter future. I think the Silverbacks are building themselves up for future success with a great core and will see general greatness soon, but Berlin has the stronger roster and may be able to grab more wins first, especially once Kaepercolin will improve at his new position.

New York will probably build on their core with free agency and future drafts but that will most likely mean their success is a bit further out than Berlins.

29) Some positions are still under appreciated. Talk about the offensive linemen and/or special teamers on your squad. Show how they have contributed to the team, both on and off the field, and why they deserve recognition.

I think it's important to understand the importance of Special Teams and players who play on special teams. Let's look at the Tijuana Luchadores this season. NationalSimulation FootballLeague was their main returner and was able to net an avg of just over 20 yards per return. This means on avg they were able to make up 20 yard per stop of their defense. This is a huge swing of the field. The best return happens when a player breaks free, with NationalSimulation was able to do at least once for a total of 94 yards. This is also seen on the other side, when you look at punters and efficiency. Some punters in the league were about to push 4000 yards in the other teams direction. When you take players into account like Maximus on Minnesota, who was able to pin opponents inside their own 20 a total of 15 times, that is really impressive. That could easily change the momentum of a game or a season.  If you take kickers into account, which can amass the most points in the league, you can really see the advantage to having a good special teams unit can be. Though these numbers can be a bit skewed in bad teams perspectives, because of a lack of offense. I generally think a good special teams is like a good defense.

"11) History is not always kind to the losers. Tell the story of a team who you view as an all-time great but who did not win the title game. Why was that team so dominant? What were the major focal points of their offense and defense, and who were the star players? What makes them so special? What was the reason that they ultimately fell short of immortal greatness?"

The Colorado Yeti in Season 24 and 25 were really good teams. They were maybe not an all-time great team, but they were consistently the best team in the league over those two years. In two seasons they amassed 27 wins and only 5 losses in the regular season. They were led by their strong offensive and an impressively solid defense. In Season 24 Wolfie McDummy had an MVP season, tossing 4002 yards and 31 touchdowns. This was a really impressive feat and led the Colorado Yeti to a strong 14-2 record.  Their rushing attack was unmatched as well, boasting the best in the league and conference. This was only coupled by a stalwart defense which was in the top 2-4 for all defensive categories.  The Colorado Yeti screamed into the playoffs this season, defeating their last 9 opponents, with the only close game being against an okay New Orleans Second Line team. They were the odds on favorites to win the Cup. However, they still had the playoffs to contend with. They squeaked by the Wraiths in the first round, needing overtime to win, this should have been foreshadowing enough for the Yeti, but then won a close one against the second best team in the league in the Sarasota Sailfish. This saw them facing the San Jose Sabercats, who were able to upset them in the, making the Colorado Yeti's goals cut short.

Alas, they had another chance at redemption in Season 25. Bringing back most of their stars, including an aging McDummy, they were poised to make a run at the cup.  This time with Gilbert in the backfield for them, they were missing a strong running game like the previous season. This made them rely heavily on McDummy, who excelled even more with the spotlight. He was able to get 4,383 yards in the air. Making the Colorado Yeti, the most lethal air team in the league. However, their defense also slid a little, losing some key members to expansion. This didn't stop them as they went on to rattle off a 13-3 regular season record. A much easier route to the finals this year as they stomped teams in the playoffs. They then saw their nemesis the San Jose Sabercats in the finals. This was a worst case, as they were again stopped in their tracks by San Jose.

The Colorado Yeti during this time period could be seen as the best team to not win, but the Sabercats just have their number it seems.
