RE: (S32) PT 1 - Mentor - Mavfatha - 11-12-2021 I would tell that young whippersnapper that grades do not matter at all if you are like us and very talented and on the route to becoming a professional athlete. In particular, when you have the attributes that the DSFL and ISFL are looking for, including such descriptive terms as "Strength", "Competitiveness", and (my favorite) "Hands", not much else matters. You can obviously be "Intelligent" in football terms even if your grades kind of suck, so even that should not end up being a deterrent. The biggest issue is the large sums of money required to pay for training and equipment, but that can be offset by side jobs such as writing articles or tweeting, which again require no qualifications beyond the ability to play football at a reasonable level. The transition is even easier if you were born with various traits such as being a Role Model or Athlete, but even those are not required. In conclusion, just drop out of school because this league does not care about your grades or background, and start making some money and training up your skills as much as possible and as early as possible. But you can't let your grades slip. Find a nerd to bully and do your homework for you. You're a 6'5 12 year old those other kids should run in terror everyone time you sneeze. Asserting your dominance over your classmates is fine. BUT I won't tolerate being belligerent to your parents. Your Mother and father work very hard to give you a good life that centers around playing a GAME. It's a privilege you shouldn't take for granted. 50 years ago kids were working factories and coal mines. Thankfully we're past that but you have to remember it's a game. It's important but no where near the most important thing in your life. Learning in school getting a college degree eventually is your first priority. Getting better at football makes you better on the field. Learning makes you better everywhere else. It’s your cousin, Kawai. Aunt Kou told me that you’ve been trying to start your own football team. That’s really cool and I hope that someday you can make it to America to play with me. But right now, you do need to make sure you do your work in school. You can be as fast and as strong as anyone else, but if you can’t use your brain then no one will want you on their team. I know that I almost got kicked out of my first team back when I was just a little older than you because I hadn’t really looked at the playbook. You would think that football is as simple as grabbing the ball and running with it, but there’s a lot more to it. As a running back, you need to know a lot of things on any given play. If it’s a passing play, you need to have your blocking assignments memorized or your route memorized. And if you’re running an option, you need to recognize what your read is and where you’re going to be running. Even on a run play, you need to know where your hole is supposed to be, you need to remember everyone else’s blocking assignments well enough to know where you’re supposed to run. Even if you’re stronger and faster than everyone else, a smarter running back can do better and with less energy, which means that teams will want them more. Aunt Kou says that you want to be a quarterback and a kicker. How can you be a quarterback, memorizing the entire play and having in mind what everyone is doing, if you can’t memorize your formulas? How can you have the focus to read the field and make adjustments if you don’t have the focus to complete your assignments on time? You may not need everything you learn in school, but the learning methods you develop in school are what help you for the rest of your life. I would love for you to hand off the ball to me someday. Do your best in school and on the field and maybe it could happen. Even though football is fun and it is cool to see a relative pursuing their passions, it is also a very risky game. In order to play football professionally, you have to be the best of the best. Many people spend years of intense training, but are not able to compete against the highest level competition. Even if my relative is good enough to play football at a professional level, a freak injury could occur at any time. Despite these risks, it is still a good thing to pursue your dreams and try to succeed in spite of the odds. However, it is also important to have a safety net and not risk too much. If this relative neglects their schoolwork in order to focus totally on football, they may not have the security of a good education to allow them to get another job if their football career doesn't work out. So I would advise my relative to continue to pursue their dream of playing football, but would warn them not do so at the expense of the other important things in life. (Word Count: 197) |
