The worst draft pick of all-time? To me, that is a difficult one to answer. It would either have to be Ethan Hunt, Josh Bercovici, Romeo Devitt, or Cliff Hamilton. What’s that? You have never heard of any of these guys? Well, sonny, sit down for an NSFL history lesson. These four men all have something in common: They were also quarterbacks drafted by the Orange County Otters during the NSFL’s Inaugural Draft. Orange County took a total of five QB’s that day—the fifth? My fucking dad. The GOAT. Mike Boss Sr was the other Otter QB that day, and he would remain an Otter for life. Ethan Hunt was at least a Pro Bowler, so he’s out of this equation. He was a fine player, but compared to my dad, that is a tough look. Probably the worst pick of all-time would be Josh Bercovici. He was braggadocious and cold-natured to my dad and grandfather. My grandpa has home movies of the first team dinner that the Orange County Otters had, one where players and their families were invited. Bercovici ended up getting hammered and couldn’t resist the red light of a camera. Sometimes when I want to feel angry, I watch that segment of the dinner on repeat for at least 45 minutes. Bercovici is the worst pick in the history of the league because if the Otters drafted someone with talent, my dad could’ve had even more impressive numbers and separated himself from everyone, ever.

I am not the most well versed on the history of this league. I’ll admit that. But I do know a little something about Noble. I know his antics were arguably the biggest drama of the early going in the NSFL, maybe topped only by Er murazos multis.
I think it’s crazy though, after reading Infinitempgs list of some draft busts that he put earlier in this topic, that NOble alts managed to go 4th overall two seasons apart.

LMFAO, that is incredible. Antonio Summer went 4th to the Wraiths in Season 11 and he turned out to be Noble. He then presumably got in trouble, ONLY to come back two seasons later and be drafted fourth again his time with the wide receiver Lucius Kane. The Yeti fell victim this time. I just find it absolutely puzzling that this dude could keep making multis that get drafted really high consistently screwing teams over. Good job Noble. Or bad job, idk which.

I hope that Noble does not find yet another way to come back and be drafted fourth overall. I will tell my GMs, RD is one of my best friends and I will make sure that every player he scouts isn’t Noble. I don’t want the Sarasota Sailfish to be the next team to use a high pick on this dude who is like the chronic cold that keeps coming back. Yikes.

The first name that jumped out to me when reading this prompt was the same conclusion many came to: Sweet James-Jones. There have been higher draft picks spent on arguably worse players on the field, but off the field he was a disaster. SJJ was one the first stories I learned about joining the league. I’ve heard him referred to as “Virtual blackface,” and “A white kid cosplaying as what he thought a rapper was like,” and looking back at his old posts I can’t say I disagree. Outspoken personalities can be fun when played right, but when you can’t separate the player from the user it becomes an issue, especially when it ends up getting you banned for life. Selected with the 6th pick in the S19 NSFL draft, SJJ made an immediate impact, recording 55 receptions for 702 yards and three touchdowns. In S20 he slightly regressed to a 57/539/1 statline, and was out of the league in S21. Not only did he offer just two seasons of decent production, but it did nothing for the Butchers as they finished at the bottom of the league in his two seasons. On field production doesn’t excuse off-field behavior, but the combination of giving Chicago a bad rep (or at least a worse one…), lack of great production, spending just two seasons in the NSFL, and no team success to show for it as a 1st round pick makes SJJ the worst bust in NSFL history.

I will toss Noah Goodson’s hat into the circle for worst first overall pick. Goodson won a championship and was a pro-bowler twice, but the linebacker did not live up to the hype of 1st overall. Drafted to Arizona when they were on a good streak, but ended up having major controversies. Goodson maxed out at 648 tpe. He was the 1st ever DSFL draft pick. I wanted a lot more out of Noah Goodson, but unfortunately did not put in the hours at the gym. I am not sure how this affected the franchise, as Arizona eventually traded Goodson. It was a weird time where Goodson did not necessarily want to leave, but was unwilling to commit long term to the Arizona management, scaring them off apparently. Therefore, it’s like that Arizona’s fanbase does not hold their Season 4 1st overall choice in high regard. Nonetheless, Goodson had a memorable career winning the Ultimus with Baltimore, spending time in Yellowknife and then closing out his career in New Orleans. The reason I consider this as one of the worst 1st overall picks is because of the importance that draft pick had for a franchise about to be engulfed in controversy. This pick was really important for Arizona, and ended up not being the best choice.

Biggest draft bust? Well I guess I'd probably go with Sweet James Jones. Picked 6th overall in the Season 19 NSFL Draft by Chicago, Sweet James Jones was expected to be part of what Chicago would hope would be a dynamic passing attack. Before making his debut for Chicago, Sweet James Jones would be involved in a contract dispute with his GMs. Having stated that he didn't want to play in Chicago during the draft process, Sweet James Jones held out for a hefty sum, signing a 1 year $7.5 million contract. Combined with concerns over his character, there were some red flags which suggested that this would not end well.

Now did he leave Chicago after a solitary season? Well no, he played the entirety of his career with the Butchers. So what makes Sweet James Jones a bust? A couple of things, for his contract demands it's fair to say that is performances did not reflect how he was being paid. Paid like one of the league's top wideouts but never put up WR1 numbers during his time in Chicago. Now you might say that with some development, he'd might be able become one of the better receivers in the league. Bad news, that didn't happen as those character concerns would come to forefront. Sweet James Jones would implode, attacking other players, posting threats, crossing lines which would see him handed a lifetime ban from the league.

Effectively 2 seasons and a ban with a spell of inactivity. His career is a mark against the Butchers, their GM's at the time and the league. Never lived up to his draft position or the contract he demanded coupled with his behaviour away from the field leaves him with a distinction of being one of biggest ever draft busts.

The biggest draft bust of all time is someone who is a good guy and in no way intentionally hurt their franchise, but was a massive setback. That person is Brock Landers, formerly of the Arizona Outlaws. The S15 NSFL draft was one of the most important in league history, as it was the first truly giant class since season 2. Teams built their dynasties on that draft. Yellowknife wouldn’t be nearly as dominant as they are now had they not nailed that draft. Which brings me to Landers. Brock was the somewhat surprising first overall pick in the S15 draft. He arrived to the league quite late and fell a long way in the DSFL draft. Between his consistent earning once he was active, his league involvement, and some fantastic interviews, he raised his draft stock to the highest in the league, at least for the Outlaws. Unfortunately, life got in the way for the user behind Landers, and the QB turned WR went IA shortly after becoming co-GM of the Outlaws, leaving Arizona’s GM without a partner, and without their first round pick in a critical draft. Due to this inactivity, Landers never broke out or had much of a career beyond being a depth piece for growing QBs. That is why he’s the biggest bust of all time.

Sweet James-Jones, the NSFL’s Antonio Brown, was picked 6th overall by the Chicago Butchers. A very controversial figure in the league, James-Jones repeatedly publicly declared that he did not want to play for the Chicago Butchers, and he also got into frequent arguments with their GMs. From the history tales I’ve heard, the Chicago GMs also took part in instigating these arguments. You would have never expected Chicago to use their 2nd first round pick in the draft on him, when instead they could have had WR Rayne Gordon who was picked 7th by Yellowknife. This pick was clearly made out of spite, and should obviously have never occurred. SJJ then went on to demand an overpriced contract, asking for 8 million and to stay down in the DSFL or be traded. After countless more arguments, SJJ stormed out of the league. He continued to toss insults left and right on his way out, (his famous line was to tell people to go swallow a knife (also what kind of go to insult is that?)) and was inevitably banned from the NSFL.

This pick had a huge impact on Chicago. First of all, it majorly hurt the culture surrounding the Chicago Butchers. SJJ was extremely controversial even before all of this happened, and him being picked by Chicago made him even worse. And second of all, it caused Toasty to step down from his GM position in Chicago. As evident by the current state of Chicago, this pick had a ripple effect on the team, and is part of what turned Chicago so terrible.
