When it comes to blown calls having a huge impact on the game, nothing in my experience in either the DSFL or ISFL compares to the blown phantom penalty called against the Tijuana Luchadores in a playoff game against the Dallas Birddogs in the S27 playoffs. With just 46 seconds left in the game, the Luchadores held a 6 point lead. The Birddogs were driving down the field though, and found themselves at 4th and 10 on the Luchadores 20 yard line. They completed a pass for 6 yards, but instead of the game log reading it as a turnover on downs, the play by play simply read “automatic first down” at the end. There was no penalty or player displayed that would have resulted in a first down. With a fresh set of downs, the Birddogs would immediately throw a 14 yard touchdown pass on the very next play, taking a one point lead with just 6 seconds left to play and securing a spot in the Ultimini.

This is a pretty hard task since I have not seen too many penalties recently that changed much of the game, especially in my time as a player in these games. One of "my" greatest achievements in the league – and I say "my" in quotes because I did not really do anything for that as a General Manager – was when Dallas won it's first Ultimini in Season 27. But the way there was very controversial because of a pretty weird call in the championship round of the playoffs against the Tijuana Luchadores. Not even was it a pretty game deciding call, but it also was technically attached to a sim weirdness that was really hard to explain other than "it is a bug, I guess". That did not sit well with a lot of people in this league and sadly took away a lot from achieving my dream and win it all for Dallas.

The referees have an important job. Sometimes, it’s the most difficult job in sports. Other times, their actions or even inactions influence things that go beyond the box score. Sometimes, their mistakes ruin lives. There are lessons to learn, and that doesn’t stop even if you’re an official. There was a game a few years ago, I don’t want to give too much identifying information because I’m not sure what the statute of limitations is when it comes to punishment from the League. Anyways, I ended up getting drilled by a safety on one play and the Ref did not call a late hit penalty against him. Not only did he refuse to call the penalty, he made fun of me for even insinuating a penalty should be called. He made fun of me because my dad was a good football player. This sent me into a fit of rage. I am the pettiest person that I know, and I wasn’t going to let this slide. Later on in the game when we were firmly ahead, my plan came to life. I purposely threw a dead duck of a ball in the direction of the same guy who hit me earlier. Of course he intercepted it. What he didn’t expect? Me coming at him from his blind side to take out his legs. Did I have a metal plate tucked on my shoulder pad? Maybe. I never got caught. And he never walked again. I win.
