(S23) - PT2 - Draft Day - Tonzy - 06-28-2020

The draft has easily been the most exciting part of the DSFL and NSFL so far for me. It was so much fun to get scouted by teams and the suspense of finding out where I would be starting my career was borderline unbareable at times. As the draft got closer and closer I was plagued with a mixture of emotions ranging from pure excitement at the possibility of going to a team I liked or a gnawing worry over going to a team where I maybe would not fit in so well.

Being part of a draft class with only 5 other secondary players I felt really good about my chances of going high especially since I also was one of the higher TPE earners in the class. I really had no idea where I was going to end up though because no teams really indicated to me that they were committed to taking me if I was available, well no team besides Tijuana, but they had the 8th pick and were fairly certain I was not going to be available when it came to be their turn to pick. Going into draft night I tried to limit my expectations and stay humble but I would be lying if I said that I wasn't pretty certain I was going to be a Top 5 pick. I had hopes of somehow ending up in Dallas because that was who picked me up off waivers and I really enjoyed their locker-room, but I knew that was unlikely. I thought I would probably end up in Norfolk but they took Quentin Button over me with the 5th pick and I left wanting as both Minnesota and London passed on me as well. That meant Tijuana was on the clock though, and they had the last pick of the first round. My stomach was in knots at the thought of not being a first round pick, but when Tijuana's pick came in I was ecstatic because on the big board was Pick #8 Maverick Bowie S!

This draft has left Maverick Bowie with a range of emotions. First off, Bowie is pumped to be part of a well run organization like Tijuana, but Bowie's competitive side is even more excited to make the rest of the teams in the league regret passing him over for their picks. It great to be a part of the reigning champs but with that reputation comes a big responsibility and even bigger shoes to fill.

I had a feeling way before the draft that one particular team would be interested to draft me. Anyways, I had a slight excitement in a draft day regardless. Getting drafted is always fun. Excitement about the new team, suspense on how low or high I'll be drafted etc. One thing is having a feeling about my draft position and a team, the actual results is the other thing.

The draft position was even more strong reason why I had an excitement on the draft day. I was hiding for a moment since I felt I would have more fun to be drafted as low as possible. So the draft would answer my question if my tactic worked. The fact that this draft had a good number of running backs and not everyone needed them was making my life easier as well.

As it turns out, my feelings were on point 100%. Mid draft, Chicaco Butchers. To be exact, 45th overall pick, and upgrade over 70th in DSFL a year before. Did I want to drop even lower? I guess so, but I wasn't upset about this result at all. As I said before, this was exactly the place I was expecting to be in. I had a nice relationship the Butchers' GM in other sim leagues and I wasn't a big draftee to be drafted too high. So mid draft made all the sense here. My feelings on the team is kinda mixed at this moment. I still remember how my kicker Fulture was just cut out by the previous Chicago GM right before the season start so it left a sour taste on my mouth. Here's to hope this changes soon and that moment will just be a distant past.

Venus Powers had a rather rocky relationship with her drafts. First up was the DSFL draft. As a home town native of San Antonio, she originally hoped and expected to be drafted by the San Antonio Marshals before they rather unexpectedly changed branding and location by moving up north to Minnesota. This betrayal by the Grey Ducks also defined her feelings towards the draft - she fell to 20th overall, but more importantly was not even the first kicker off the board, since Silver Banana went to the aforementioned Grey Ducks one pick before. However, the Pythons were a good destination regardless. A year later, she experienced the thrill of the draft again, and this time around the experience was much less laced with bitter feelings. Having no preconceived notions of team quality, barring of course the Chicago Butchers, she was rather happy landing at fourteenth overall, this time to the Philadelphia Liberty. It also helped tremendously that in this draft, Venus Powers beat out Silver Banana for the title of being the first kicker off the board, which set the tone for her soon to be Hall of Fame career tremendously. Overall, the drafts were a mixed bag, but the thrill of it all was unmatched.

My NSFL draft in season 22 was not even that long ago, but yet I still remember it like it was yesterday. Being in the EU, it meant I had to stay up late for a 1am start. But let's rewind a little. Before the draft my player Derred de Ville had a good season and I would like to think that did enough in the community to get positively noticed.

As a result, I got a lot of scouting requests and had some really great conversations with a few teams that stood out particularly: Philly, Baltimore and NOLA. I had the longest conversation with then Philly GM TubbyTim and we went quite in depth on many league and player related topics.

So fast forward back to the night of the draft and I was hoping to be drafted in the first round, and was thinking that it would be likely to be with one of the two first round picks that Philly had. But, it turned out that they had other plans and I continued to fall, and suddenly NOLA and Baltimore or maybe even OCO looked like likely destinations. In the end Baltimore scooped me up at 9th overall, to be the new cornerstone LB on the defense. I was and still am pretty excited about that draft destination. It's a team loaded with young talent at the most important positions and should have some success in the coming seasons, backed by a great front office and war room.

Overall, the draft and hearing one's name called is definitely among my favourite league experiences so far, and a very memorable one at that.

I wasn’t expecting to go very high on my draft day in season 21. I think I was a fourth round pick in the DSFL draft, and my performance in the DSFL wasn’t really anything to write home about. Additionally, I wasn’t ( and still am not ) very active in Discord, which I assumed would hurt my draft stock a lot. I mean, I lurk on discord way more than I should, but I don’t usually engage in conversations. Luckily, I think it is pretty well known in the league that defensive lineman are pretty hit or miss on the stat sheet, but having a good defensive lineman helps your chances to win by a fairly large amount when sim testing. I think that the inconsistent stats lead people to not choose defensive lineman as a position, which helps a high-earning player like me stand out more to the NSFL GMs. I ended up going second overall in the draft, which was way higher than I was ever expecting to go. The first overall pick was then Jeffrey LaVert ( now Prince Vegeta ) who was much more active in the league than I was during our prospect and DSFL seasons. He has done a great job of differentiating himself from the pack with great recruitment numbers, but I think all in all I have been a great pickup as well as a top earner in a highly sought after position.

It seems like just yesterday that I was drafted into the DSFL. Although I had a hell of a run in college it's still a little nerve-wracking to be sitting and waiting for your name to be called. Watching player after player, name after name, round after round go by without hearing your name called is tough. Thankfully, finally, at pick #70 I was selected by the Norfolk SeaWolves. They probably hoped they had nabbed a late round steal. I knew without a shadow of a doubt that they had. What I didn't know at that time, however, was how great the locker room in Norfolk was. I was coming in with a chip on my shoulder. Something to prove. And in Norfolk I was welcomed with open arms. Together we all built something special. We fought for each other. We battled as a team. We put together two amazing seasons of the best football ever played in Norfolk. Two years worth of memories and friendships. On draft day I was more than a little upset that I had fallen as far as I did. Looking back, however, I wouldn't have changed a thing. The SeaWolves made me the player I am today. You know what they say: Norfolk best folk.

I think many, including myself, would agree that draft night is one of the most exciting, if not the most exciting part of any sim league. Leading up to draft day excitement is sky high. GMs and scouts have spent the past couple weeks reaching out to you gauging interest in you. Heading into the DSFL draft I had no idea what to expect. Mock drafts had me going anywhere from the early second round all the way to the middle of the third round. Well, come draft night I was glued to the computer screen. The first couple of picks were no real surprise but then at the end of the first round it finally happened and my name was called with the number 8 pick overall by the Portland Pythons. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I continued to grow and grind in my first season in the DSFL and heading into the S17 NSFL draft expectations were much higher. I was a top earner in the class and was coming off a DSFL defensive player of the year nod. Quite frankly anything short of first round would've been a disappointment. Well with the 6th overall pick the Wraiths made me their first round choice much to my excitement..and the rest is history.
