RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Jay_Doctor - 11-27-2020 RIP, I started typing this out and it never saved. Guess I'll be starting over. This will probably turn out to be similar to what I have written about in past on previous ultimus week topics. I originally came across the league by complete accident. I was walking tv and nothing interesting was on, so I was skimming over random channels. I was close to the end of my channels and had still found nothing when I came across a sim league football game on. It was on a channel I had never even heard of and I was not even sure if I would get it. When I went to select it, sure enough it went through. The first thing I noticed was that the graphics were a bit aged so I could tell whatever game they were using had to have been at least 10ish years old. I could also tell that the style was not that of Madden and it had me really curious. As I was watching, the announcers gave mention to what this league was and what it was about. They also said that they were using All Pro Football 2k8. After a quick search, I found that the game had a huge following despite being over a decade old. The stadium was really unique and I also loved the team names. I googled the league name and tried to find out how I could join. I saw a post that lead me to reddit, so I went through with that. Lo and behold, that link actually lead me to the NSFL and not the SFL. That is how I first came in contact with our league. I joined on discord (and I was completely clueless when it came to discord at the time) and people were quite friendly. They asked how I found them and I said "I saw you on tv". Needless to say, most people were quite confused on what I was talking about. After getting some help on what to do next, I created a player. Shortly after I joined, the DSFL draft was coming about. I got scouted by a couple teams and that's when I really started to love this league. Then the draft itself hit and I had a blast. It was amazing to hear my name called and shortly after join my new team. Once the first game came about, I was moderately crushed. By now I had known that this wasn't the league I had seen on tv, but I was pretty let down by what the game itself looked like. It was a bunch of small dots moving around so fast that I could hardly follow the flow of the game the first time. Discouraged, I still found that I liked the idea of slowly improving my player over time and the idea that I was in a team locker room, so I hung in a bit longer. This next time I watched, I had a better idea of what to expect and I found that I didn't hate it this time. It was still too fast to try reading each play, but I also accepted that it was better to follow the general concept of what was happening and just read for the bigger plays. A couple more streams in and I actually found that I really started to enjoy those silly little dots. The league became a big part of what I did. I had started when there was no pandemic, but when that hit a lot of activities I did anyways weren't going to happen. That's not to say I wouldn't have kept doing the league anyway though, as I had started to get more and more involved. On Christmas eve, I was invited into the NOLA War Room and then shortly after named a captain of Tijuana. That day was one of the most meaningful days of my sim league life. I went on to be a rookie mentor for 4 seasons (3 seasons? I'm honestly not sure anymore, everything runs together). I also was a GM for the Tijuana Luchadores for 3 seasons. During that time, I met a huge portion of the league userbase for the time. It was such a privilege getting to know so many great people and help out in their journey to enjoying the league. The best feeling for me was seeing others get to enjoy those same positive emotions I felt, like getting drafted or being named a captain of your team. This league has been way more positive than negative in my time here and I hope it can continue to be that way for others. Even bigger RIP. I went to WordCounter and found what I had typed still saved in there. Because I don't want to feel like I wasted time doing this twice, I'm going to post below as well. Happy Silver Jubilee ISFL/NSFL! You've made it through 25 seasons now, a feat that feels pretty monumental. I think a lot of us take it for granted that these sim leagues are just up and running, but that is never a guarantee. Joining the Grass Roots Soccer League from close to the start, I saw the insane amount of work it takes just to get a league like this up and running. Once that is done, it still takes the dedication of a lot of people to keep things running smoothly. For over one year of my real life now, I have been a part of this league. From day one, this league was something I was fascinated in. I loved the idea of doing different activities each week and slowly making my player improve over time. I remember watching my first sim and almost getting turned off though. The chat was going crazy for these stupid little dots and I was really unimpressed at first. I thought that the structure was cool, but I didn't really feel like I was watching much when my player was on the field. After a couple of days though, I started warming up to the idea of 22 little dots running through a 60 minute game in just about 5 minutes. I've come to really love those silly little dots, though sometimes I do wonder about what it would be like to see a more life like presentation. The other aspects of the league is where the magic really happens though. The scouting process and draft is hands down the coolest aspect of what we do. Having all of the teams reach out and scout you was an awesome feeling. I feel like scouting has really made a shift to being much more impersonal with the stupid questionnaires these days, but those who reach out and do it the old fashioned way get big props from me. It just makes a more personal touch from the beginning and probably goes a longer way for that prospect. Besides scouting, I think the other best aspect of this league is the locker room structure. Being in a place with all of your teammates really does feel like a locker room. You get to shoot the breeze, talk sports and of course talk about anything league related. This is also something that has changed quite a lot since I first joined, but luckily where I'm in we have a closed locker room. I know a lot of people prefer an open locker room, but I strongly disagree with that sentiment. I think the whole point of the team locker room is to keep it to just current and former players of that organization. If you want to socialize with the rest of the league, go to the dedicated server that literally 99% of the league is a part of from the start. I also don't understand the allure of being a part of 17 different locker rooms and trying to communicate in all of them. I can barely keep up with 2 these days. Of everything I've mentioned, the single best part of this league has been the users I've meet. A large majority of the users I'm closest with stem from NOLA and Tijuana. When I was more active as a GM and Rookie Mentor, I did get to meet a ton of awesome people in that regard as well. For the sake of not leaving anyone out, I won't start naming names. I think anyone who I have become close with knows already. To those people, I just want to say thank you for everything you have done. The league is in a better place because of you being here. I also feel like I am a better person for getting to know so many of you this last year. Keeping being awesome! Here is to wishing another 25 seasons for the ISFL. RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Sylphreni - 11-27-2020 I like many users on the site, found the NSFL as it was known back then through a Reddit post back at the beginning of the pandemic outbreak. Unlike so many other users however, I opted not to immediately join the league, but rather saved that initial Reddit post, for something to be looked at later. It took me several months to finally round back to that post, but when I did I began to look into the league and see what it was all about. I'll be honest, initially the league didn't really appeal to me. It looked like a neat idea, but having watched some of the youtube videos and a tutorial start up video... it just didn't really click for me. I don't know what expectations I had coming in, but the whole "dots" thing just didn't do it for me. As I prepared to exit the site, and thus end a fake football career before it even truly began, I noticed a link on the home page that read “Podcasts” this I found intriguing, as Podcasts have always been one of my preferred forms of media. I opened it up, and decided to listen to one of the more recent submissions there… While I didn’t really understand what the people in the podcast were talking about, I could understand that they all seemed to care about the league and enjoyed it…. And that was enough to spike my interest. Since that time, this league has been a fantastic experience and escape from the Covid bullshit of 2020. I’ve met some really incredible people here, and am lucky enough to consider some of them friends. Likewise, the league has allowed me to explore the world of podcasting in a way I hadn’t thought possible before joining. I don’t know that I’ll ever do anything more with it, but it was a great experience to try something new and see if I enjoyed it. GMing in the league has also been a fun experience that I am thankful for. While I can’t say yet that I feel like I’m doing a great job with it, it’s been an awesome experience and something I look forward to continuing to get better at as I continue to grow in the league. All in all, I am incredibly grateful for this league and the immense amount of joy its brought me. Sure, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass at times, but at the end of the day, its proven to be very much worth the annoyances. Love you all! RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Daybe - 11-27-2020 Throughout my league experience I have played for a great deal of ISFL teams. Some of these squads include:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Each of these squads have given me a unique opportunity and chance to meet some new people throughout my time with four players. So I wanted to shoutout each franchise: ![]() The team that originally drafted me #3 in the S3 draft. Although I only played there one season my first go around (Brice Boggs), I had so much fun that season that later I chose to come back and GM the team. Getting the opportunity to draft and work with players like Nero Alexander, Nate Swift, Johnny Snuggles, Cooter Bigsby, etc. was a blessing and I truly felt satisfied with how my time in Yellowknife went. The same core was finally able to secure that elusive championship a few seasons ago, which I could not have been more proud of. ![]() No matter where my ISFL journey takes me I always seem to find a way back on the Yeti. This team has traded for me once (Brice Boggs) and drafted me twice (Ryan Applehort, Jackson Kingston). Even though none of these tenures ended the way I was hoping for, I am unconditionally grateful for the team that took a chance on me THREE times. I have tons of respect for everybody who weathered the rough years and enjoyed the fruits of success in the Yeti's first championship run. ![]() This team was a bridge for me, marking the year between leaving the Yeti in FA and getting traded to Yellowknife as GM. Our one season together did not end up in the history books as we lost to the Second Line in overtime. However, I can definitely say this was the most talented team Ryan Applehort had the opportunity to quarterback for. ![]() After recreating with Jaylen Storm, I eventually left in FA for the Otters, and then went inactive. I don't remember too much from my tenure here except we won like three championships, still my only ISFL Ultimus trophies to this date. Playing in Orange County is a fast track to playoff success, which Storm enjoyed. ![]() Storm made his way onto Honolulu via the expansion draft. Only playing one season there as I retired, it was a good experience and it revived my interest in the league after being inactive for 5-6 months. Nothing beats playing in Hawaii and living their for 9 months of the season, right? ![]() The Silverbacks are my most recent and current team. After being left unprotected again in the expansion draft (this time with Jackson Kingston), I found myself donning the mint green and black. This squad has been nothing but good times, and Kingston has finally gotten the opportunity to shine in a primary receiver role. Even though the on field team success is yet to come, GMs Woelkers and Bwestfield are building something great in the Big Apple. RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Legally_Blind_Gamer - 11-27-2020 What does the ISFL mean to me? Quite a lot actually. I started this league after 1.5 years in the Professional Baseball Experience, and figured it was time to get my toes wet trying out a second league, to see if I enjoyed it. And so far, it has been a lot of fun! When I signed up, I thought for a long time about what position I wanted my player to be. I was a batter in PBE, and thought I would try something defensive this time to switch things up. So after a lot of mulling it over, I decided that Safety was the way to go, and thus Derek Wildstar was born. Right away I was waiver signed by the Kansas City Coyotes, who’s Co-GM, Simo, was a player on the Minor League team in PBE I was head GM for, the Dallas Dynamos. As soon as I joined their locker room, I saw several familiar faces from PBE, and knew I was in a great locker room, and got lots of help from teammates with things like build suggestions for my player, and folks offering to make me signatures etc. And off I went! Earning TPE, applying updates to my stats, and generally working hard to make sure my player was a solid asset to the team. And this started really paying off as Season 25 started, as right away I saw Derek Wildstar making some big plays to help shut down opposing offenses. Everything from forced fumbles, to sacks, to interceptions, to lots of tackles every game, Derek was doing it all! I soon realized that Coyotes liked running safety blitz, so I was all over the field, doing coverage routes, rushing the quarterback, being there to tackle rushers near the line of scrimmage, I was becoming the complete package. But then about halfway through the season, I was informed by the Coyotes GMs that I would now be the primary punt returner on the team as well, and what a lot of fun that was to watch! I made 2 punt returns for a touchdown, and had something like 300 yards returning in just 6-7 games total. This last accomplishment brought me under the gaze of the Awards Committee, who nominated me for DSFL Returner of the Year. And although I did not win the award, the folks on the stream who talked about my returns that season had very nice things to say about me, and mentioned I would be someone to watch in the future. I was stoked! Then I entered the ISFL Season 26 Draft after the season was over. I ended up going #11 overall, to the Berlin Fire Salamanders, who ended trading up to get me. It was a very humbling moment, one that filled me with pride, to see a team trade away a portion of their future to get me into their lineup. It was a real honor, one that I will make sure will pay off well for them in the future. After being drafted, I was told by the Salamander Head GM that I would stay down for one more season with the Coyotes. Being close to a max earner, I was already capped at 250 total points earned, and now was set to have a superstar season in the Kansas City backfield, playing to the best of my ability and helping them hopefully win a Championship. So now I am set to enjoy the rest of my career in the ISFL, and am thankful for the opportunity to show what I am capable of. Lets go! Code: 605 words. RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Tomasnz - 11-27-2020 This league means lots of things to me. So many I am going to list them all. Some of these have changed and shifted and become more or less important over time. First and foremost this league provides me a outlet for my gaming and role play gaming desire in a way that I can do here and there. I am very busy and love my work, my friends and my growing family, gaming my favourite hobby does not always get a look in. And sim leagues in general but this one in particular give me an outlet for this in a timeframe that I can manage. Secondly, if gives me access to even more people I am an extreme extrovert, so building relationships and becoming part of a lockeroom culture is one of my favourite aspects of this league. Shout out to the Bondi crew, whole have almost single handedly boosted my interest in the league. This has come into increased focus as my home country re enters lock downs. Thirdly, the role play and PTs and media and twitter provide creative outlets for me, I ensure writing and don’t do enough of it. These leagues encourage me to do more. 202 words. RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - toivo - 11-27-2020 My first player was in Season 4. He managed to go first overall in the S4 draft and I believe first overall in the first ever DSFL draft. Those were huge accomplishments to me. I wouldn’t quite say my player lived up to first overall material, but he did alright. I think he was a pro-bowler for a few seasons and I won a trophy. That boy bounced around teams, playing for four different ones in his career in the top league. I had a lot of fun with that guy, especially settling into the franchise I’m still with today, new Orleans Second Line. Up next was my first wide receiver, Bona’beri Jones. This was a quick cat who set some records in the DSFL for touchdown receptions. He was all speed no brakes. I had a lot of fun, and he was drafted to Portland in the DSFL, which was my second time with that franchise. He played his career out in New Orleans. He once went to free agency but nobody contacted him so he remained with the Second Line throughout his entire pro career. I think he had a few good seasons, nothing crazy to write home about, but he was serviceable and I am proud of his career. The career of Bona’beri Jones inspired me to create my second wide-receiver, Brock Bodenhamer. Bodenhamer has gotten off to a slowish start to his career, but I think he will put up a few quality seasons. He was drafted to Myrtle Beach Buccaneers in the DSFL draft. Then, he was drafted back to New Orleans. The Second Line know what kind of player they can expect out of my guys. They aren’t going to be top of the class, but they will be pretty consistent. Overall, the league has been pretty fun. I see myself apart of it for the future. It along with PBE and SHL are what I consider the good trio of sim leagues. I appreciate their inter connected communities and ties. It’s surprising that I have been with the league for over 20 seasons. If I am here for season 50, I expect we might be on a new sim engine, one that is a little nicer to look at in the index. Obviously we will grow and gain/lose some members along the way, but I hope for the most part, the familiar faces stay familiar and the league keeps it current culture. This league has a good thing going, and I would hate to see it compromise that somehow. Cheers to 25 seasons! Word Count: 430 RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Swanty - 11-28-2020 I was having a pretty normal day, browing Reddit on a midsummer's day when I probably should have been outside in the sun. The NFL post caught my eye. At first glance, it didn't really seem like something I'd be super into. I love the statistics side of any games, but this seemed to be more about creativity, like writing prompts or making graphics than strategising and analysing. The above may still be true, but the aspect of the ISFL that really drew me in and has kept me here that I completely didn't expect, was the social side. I normally don't enjoy multiplayer games and stick to games like Civilization or Factorio, than playing with strangers over the internet. But from day one, when Maglubiyet reached out for the first time, it was clear that this wasn't just like a regular game. Straight away I felt welcome in the London open locker room, both with fellow new recruits joining at the same time, and the Elder Statesman welcoming me to the fold. I couldn't keep up with all the open LRs so London became my go to hang out spot. And it was such a great surprise when they decided to draft me in the S24 DSFL draft! Since then, it's been my home away from home, and I've met a lot of really great friends there. Most of the time, our bonding is over ISFL topics, but there's a lot of great discussion and fun Geoguessr times that have brought us closer together, not just as a team but of the extended family of anyone else around the league who is looking for a fun place to hang out. Moving onto the ISFL, and I'm immensely grateful to High and Dewalt for drafting me to a brand new expansion team. The experience of helping build up a franchise from scratch has been fantastic, and as we kick off season 2, it really feels like an established unit. The team is going from strength to strength, but more importantly, we've got a fantastic locker room with some really great users. S26 looks to be an exciting one for Berlin, and I can't wait to see how it all pans out. Looking back at the last 5 months, the most unexpected thing I've gotten from this experience is the number of really good friends I've made who share so many of the same interests. We might not know what each other looks like, but I know I can count on them! RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Beaver - 11-28-2020 my favorite thing about this league is definitely the drama followed closely by the shitposting some of my favorite memories of this league came in season 8 and 9 when the new orleans second line had memed our way from utter trash to the playoffs and were shitposting like crazy which led even jiggly to get a bit exasperated with it (see sig) that locker room was without a doubt the most fun one I've been a part of in any sim league and it's not particularly close those were good times yes sir but as for specific memories I'd have to say the season 9 ultimus was really sweet of course we had lost in the ultimus the previous season after upsetting the orange county otters on the road but made it back the next season and beat the hawks and I was all prepared to meme the hawks because at that point they were famous for choking speaking of which a side memory I really liked was when we could shitpost graphics for ultimus week those were fun and are humorous to go back and look at anyways my shitposting career had led to that exact moment and yet there was very little shitposting because the new orleans second line discord was busy debating the best disney movie instead of shitposting and let's see oh yes one of my favorite dramas was when some random ass dsfl team rebranded and a few people were upset about this thinking the team had success and history when they were wrong and the thread spiraled out of control simply because I stated facts man I wish I could remember what that team was called anyways it was really funny how they thought they were rivals with the mighty tijuana luchadores and let's see what other good moments were there oh yes going back to the early new orleans days the time @bovovovo said he would use a plunger on his butthole if the colorado yeti went 0-14 in back to back seasons and then they did but he didn't was hilarious and let's see what else oh yes august the 17th 2018 the day that will go down in shitpost infamy when bovo insulted my pbe team and I opted out of my contract and the new orleans roster spent the day shitposting famous speeches and changing them to be about memeing and other dumb shit like this to the extent that people on other teams got involved as well (molarpistols was my favorite guest appearance) and this just so happened to be like the first day of reddit recruitment or something like that so there were some people that were not happy with us flooding the media forum with nonsense and bzerkap came into nola discord and gave us a lil pp slap so yeah those are a few of my favorite moments in this league's history: drama and shitposting RE: Offseason Point Task - 25th Anniversary Special - Tesla - 11-28-2020 I admit that this has been a difficult point task for me as I am unsure of how much detail to go into to be honest. Despite completing every point task available to me since the DSFL draft I originally did not expect to get even a fraction as involved in this league as I have to date. Funnily enough I remember responding to DSFL scouting questions that I would probably be a 3 of 10 on activity outside of point tasks since I am not an especially social person. That expectation changed though thanks to the community itself and I could not be more grateful for that. I joined as part of the mega big S22 r/NFL class as I had seen the S18 advertisement and it looked appealing to me even then, but now I had more time to dedicate to a sim league. Also was more inclined to participate as I had been wanting to write some football related material for a while, and my initial media blitz did a wonderful job of scratching that itch. However I wholeheartedly expected this to be another place where I would be on the fringe of actives and that I would just participate as an average player. There are two distinct memories I have from early on in my league experience though that changed that. The first being sloth o'clock in the rookie discord right around a week after I joined the league, and the discovery of a user named Slothfacekilla. I distinctly remember that event as I talked to one of my housemates about it and they commented that it sounds like I found my people. Nine months later and I can certainly say it feels like I have found a home of sorts here. One that unsurprisingly sees me on the same team as the wonderful Slothfacekilla who has become one of my most favorite friends in the league. The second being commissioner Bex commenting that excitement was more valuable than TPE in her opinion. Which given her position and how well she had handled herself in the chats that I had seen is an opinion I valued highly, and still value highly to this day. That was enough for me to want to do my best as the user behind Magnus to make sure that my player did not fall on my account. It turned out quite the opposite as while all my effort to max earn has made Magnus a mediocre defensive tackle; my personality has somehow won people over enough that he was drafted second overall in the largest draft class to date. Those helped provide the push I needed to give it my all and led to me being invited to the Norfolk locker room by Juni. Who I discovered shares several similar interests to me through our chats in rookie discord. Once in Norfolk though I met Isa who I had already learned about as my media work had drawn comparisons to that point. Weird as it might be Isa was my league idol at the time and so to have a casual conversation with him meant a lot to me. Magnus would go on to be drafted tenth overall to Norfolk which is still one of my favorite moments in the league as excitement was high at the time. I will not lie and say Norfolk is my favorite of the locker rooms that I have gotten to be in during my time in sim leagues, but it is easily a close second. It is a place that has led me to take almost a hundred screenshots of cherished memories as a sort of digital scrap book. Normally I might thank the people who have made that experience so enjoyable here, but as there are far too many of them to list I will just say thank you to the members of the Norfolk Seawolves locker room who have made my time in this league so enjoyable. Since I mentioned that Norfolk is my second favorite; I feel it only fair to shout out my favorite which is the New Orleans Second Line server which has been my favorite discord server for a while now. I just checked with the hope that there would be a Z user name associated with the server, but alas there is not. So instead from AdamS to Wombat I can say that the server has been a wonderfully warm place for me. Although just like Norfolk there are far too many people to thank everyone individually for their contribution to making that locker room as lovely as it has been for me. Although I do want to give a special shout out to LordBirdman who is the user behind LeBong Simwell who is Magnus' fellow defensive tackle as I really love the enthusiasm they bring. Genuinely though I love the New Orleans locker room and the people in it, and I am incredibly glad that I get to be a part of it. The league means a lot to me as it has provided me a place to be away from the chaos of reality and a pleasant place at that. Whether it be in the form of some of my favorite discords, the media section that is so creative, or the point tasks that are so thoughtfully put together by the player progression team. I enjoy my time here and the escape that it provides from the ongoing reality around us. It is also nice that when that reality gets to be too much that there are people here who are willing to listen and that so many are supportive of one another at that time. Just seeing that reminder of the kindness of human beings is enough to brighten my day. Thank you and I hope that you have a lovely day!
