As a DSFL team, my London Royals do tend to get involved a lot of the time with very silly penalties in key situations. Although really, a lot of those penalties actually haven’t affected the outcome of many of our games, since the score for the other team tends to increase so fast it wouldn’t have mattered much anyway. There is one exception to this in my mind though; week 9 at home against the Minnesota Grey Ducks. The score at the time of the penalty was 23-7, but our offense was really getting a good drive going at that point; we had taken 5 minutes off the clock, sure, but it was still progressing well - with a first and 10 from Minnesota’s 32 meaning we were quietly confident of at least 3 points coming our way. That was until Dreamster was called on a somewhat questionable Illegal Block above the waist, that set us back 10 yards away from the posts. Our team was despondent as we were once again taken out of realistic field goal range by an external factor and - even though we got back to the Minnesota 28 to make it a 45 yard FG - Curri missed wide right to make us pay for the refs belligerent penalty call. The team would then begin to play in a more angry fashion, and that was rewarded with a 4th quarter TD and 2 pointer to bring the game within a score. In the end though, we fell short of getting that TD to have a chance to tie… by 1 yard, as time expired when Rotini went down inbounds at the 1 yard line. Could we have one if the penalty hadn’t put us in a bad spot in the 3rd? Probably yes. But that’s just football, and I prefer to be proud of how our team handled the situation afterwards over complaining about the call any more than necessary after the fact.

The refs are always making bad calls, the penalty flags fly at the worst times, and constantly make an impact on the game, but it's the missed calls that are even worse. When you have a clear pass interference that is missed, a late hit, or a roughing the passer that goes uncalled, it kills all momentum and puts your team in a corner when really you should be benefitting from the bad play from your opponent. Even then, we know that we have to do enough to win first, that's why we don't care about the bad calls, the ones that get away and focus on doing our best to beat everyone on the field that day, including the refs. We know they won't always bail us out, and could hurt us, so you can't really bank on a big call being made, it's a game where high level athletes are playing their hardest in order to win the games on their schedules, so we have to react and attack even when penalties are called that influence the game negatively for us. The refs are not our teammates, we focus on helping each other and winning games off our skills.

Honestly some times I just get so god damn heated about some trash penalty calls that the referees in the International Simulation Football League make, especially when they go against Jackson Kingston, wide receiver for the Sarasota Sailfish who has also formerly played for the Colorado Yeti and the New York Silverbacks and previously the Tijuana Luchadores in the Developmental Simulation Football League. One time the refs made a very bad call against Jackson Kingston in a regular season game against the rival Colorado Yeti. The Sailfish scored a long handoff run against the Yeti but unfortunately the refs called a phantom holding penalty against Jackson Kingston that brought the play back. Honestly, that moment had Jackson Kingston feeling like that one time that one of his friends tried screenshotting one of his NFTs (non-fungible token). These NFTs are more complex than just pictures. In this particular occasion, Jackson Kingston was feeling that anger one gets when someone screenshots an NFT. It made him feel like the one scenario where he had to confront a good friend, saying, "Dude I own this NFT. Do you really think you can get away with theft when you're showing what you stole from me directly to my face. My lawyers will make an easy job of this case. Prepare to say goodbye to your luscious life and start preparing for the streets. I will ruin you." That is the level of anger felt by Jackson Kingston in this referee mistake.

The refs don’t always do a great job. There’s been countless times in my career so far that they’ve been blind as a bat or called something that wasn’t there. Arguing with those guys truly gets you nowhere too. Man, it’s ridiculous. But there’s been one truly bad series of events that really sticks with me the most.

One week, I think we were facing the Minnesota Grey Ducks, and there was three straight horrible calls and no calls. I caught a 5 yard slant and had 45 yards after the catch. The entire play was called back for an offensive holding. Watching the replay, the defensive lineman literally looked like he slipped on a banana peel. No sign of holding anywhere.

A couple of plays later, I was running a post route and I had the corner beat. It would have been an easy touchdown. I feel a hand on the back of my collar before the ball even gets there. I'm dragged to the ground and the ball sails past. I look to the ref and they appear to be doing their best Stevie Wonder impersonation. Next play, the exact same route. The defender tried to hold my hand so I slapped him off of me and snagged the ball for a touchdown. Until the referee called an Offensive Pass Interference. At that point, I just wanted the game to end.
