(S11) - PT 3 - Halloween Party - Trautner - 10-30-2018

Danny Grithead enjoys Halloween more than most normal people do in this strange world. While his teammates on the Orange County Otters hosted a party at the local bar near the stadium, Grithead prepared himself for a night of fright and fight. Yes, that's right, fight. Danny Grithead dressed up as his favorite boxer on Halloween, Rocky Balboa. All of the people at the Halloween party for the Otters were really impressed to see Grithead's dedication to the costume that he designed at home himself. It's almost like Danny Grithead sees himself as Rocky Balboa and dresses like a boxer on a normal basis. But, I digress. Grithead went to the bar and enjoyed drinks with his teammates. Marc Spector and Tegan Atwell dressed as Chloe and Max from Life is Strange, and Angus Winchester went as himself naked. Grithead got into a couple bar fights because he had the boxing gloves to really deal out some damage. It was an eventful Halloween night and Grithead ended up staying in jail overnight since he couldn't pay bail after purchasing all of his extremely, unbelievably expensive cleats and gloves for this season that break every single season for some reason. Grithead's court date is set for next month.

Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year. I just love everything about it. It just seems like everyone embraces the event and has fun with it. Everyone, young and old, dress up in costumes and just enjoy themselves. There's also something about fear and the scary atmosphere around Halloween that really perks you up.

What I Iove to do every October is have a scary movie night with some of my closest friends. We'll pop some popcorn and try to find the scariest movie to watch together. We're more into psychological thrillers rather that cheap jump scares, but there's always something out there that makes your hair stand up. There's few feelings like fear, it really energizes you. Along with scary movie night, we also help set up a haunted house for the kids to go through on Halloween. We have a detached garage and we'll set up a path fill of animated Halloween decorations, scary music, and play actors dressed up as classic Halloween characters. Once the kids go through the haunted house, they get their candy at the end. The neighbourhood kids always seem to have a blast and that's really what it's all about for us. Halloween is a great time of the year where both kids and adults seem to embrace the spirit of it all and enjoy it together.

There's an Orangeville Halloween tradition - you've probably never heard of it, most haven't - the Halloween Orange Fight. It's not very well known outside of the Greater Orangeville area, but it's a really big deal there, people take it really seriously.

The preparations often start months in advance. Often, as early as July, people will start stocking oranges in their cellars, constructing orange slings and decorating their new helmet (using an old helmet for the Orange Fight is considered very gauche).

When the big day arrives, everyone comes out, either to participate in the fight, or to watch. Kids have been known to miss their chance to trick or treat, because they were so enthralled watching their older siblings or parents participate in the big fight.

After some tradition and ceremony, all the combatants have five minutes to position themselves, then the mayor kicks off the fight by smashing an orange with a sledgehammer.

After that, chaos ensues. People can be seen in every street, alley and cul-de-sac, hurling oranges, loosing oranges from hand-crafted slingshots, using improvised shields to defend themselves. Most wear padded clothing, due to the velocity the oranges fly with.

At the end of the day, when there remains only one combatant, he is crowned Orange Champion and sacrificed to the Elder Gods.

How does Logan Lejune spend his Halloween? Well he definitely doesn't spend it celebrating Halloween. He thinks Halloween is a wicked holiday. Why would we celebrate a holiday of death, devil's, witches, and ghouls. He is also busy with the football regular season in October. He will however, take time to attend a fall party with his friends.

At this party, Livingston, Leblanc, and he will enjoy a bonfire. They will eat hot dogs and warm soups. There will be candy and deserts. There will be a lively game of touch football. Later in the evening, the group will go out on a (rather uninteresting hayride.

Around the locker room, Lejune will be unavailable to avoid the "celebration". Pranks abound. Someone put a dead fish in Trout's locker. Who knew someone named Trout would be scared of a fish. The worst prank happened when someone put a white gloved hand sticking out the bottom of the toilet holding a paper boat. A creepy recording played "everything floats down here." The bathrooms were abandoned for a week after that one. What made that worse? The laxative laced candy a certain running back handed out. All in all Lejune has had an eventful Halloween, even as he tries to avoid the holiday.

Clone Spector had never celebrated Halloween before. It just was not part of his lab raised upbringing, so this year when the Orange County Otters held a Halloween night for the local children, he was very overjoyed to learn all about it and take part.

Every year the Otters Field House and Practice Facility gets decorated by a group of local volunteers and players are encouraged to dress up as various characters. Most of the players choose kid friendly costumes like Buzz Lightyear, Batman, Mickey Mouse and SpongeBob. Some players choose classic Halloween characters like Dracula, a werewolf or a zombie.

Marc had never dressed up before and he liked the idea of it, so he went as something he was very familiar with. A Scientist. He got his biggest pair of big black rimmed glasses, a lab coat, some pens and pencils and put them in the pocket. He got a flask and filled it with orange soda and carried it around as the kids came up and took pictures with him. He carried around bags of Skittles and dropped the in kids buckets and wished them a Happy Halloween. It's not often Marc wishes he had a full childhood, but seeing the awe and joy on the children's faces as they went from player to coach to player looking for candy, and seeing all the inspiring costumes made him feel a tad bittersweet about missing out on that aspect of a childhood.
