Sometimes it is disadvantageous to trade back (if you have 2 picks at the top of the 2nd for instance). But GMs everywhere have been doing this for a long time, it’s not SJS’s strategy and it shouldn’t be new to NSFL GMs.

Well this is my first season and my first sim league, so it's new to me.

I'd like to see full GM player untethering as an option for the future of the league and its GM's tbh

Honolulu also did this when we swapped 2nd rounders with AUS in the trade involving their 3rd rounder

I think its not a huge deal personally. In my thought process, if trading back is outlawed, this just hurts bad teams. If a team is forced to take a player, albeit a good one, they would have to take one with the first pick in the second just because they were bad that year? seems rough. plus what if instead of trading down in the second, they just traded for another second round pick? I dont think that would fit what you are saying with giving teams a free pick, and its something thats definitely happened before

That's fair. It's great that you're trying to think of things to try and improve the league already! That's something HO likes to see in future GMs

You can change the rule, but the meta will just change with it. Currently team GMs/Warrooms plan around having to take their remakes with their second round pick. You can change it so it's the first round pick, and they'll plan around that and have their recreate during a slow recruitment time. You can change the rule so there's you can hold the GM player hostage for a big trade, then every team will adapt and hold hostages. It's not a great system, but I don't think the alternatives are really any better.

I agree that the system isn't perfect, but I think the concerns people have raised about alternatives are reasonable. A few things that haven't been brought up, though.

When you trade up or down in the draft, it's not only the two teams trading that are affected. If I pick 3rd and you pick 2nd, if I trade up to 1st to take the guy you wanted then my trade affects you too. The transaction is more than just the buying team trading up for a pick that the selling team wanted to trade out of, because the buying team is also trading ahead of the other teams.

If GMs know that the other team is actively trying to move back as far as reasonably possible, that affects the trade value of the pick. GMs aren't somehow swindling other GMs for hauls when they trade back in the 2nd, because they know that they want to trade back. I don't think the teams trading up in the 2nd are getting particularly screwed over in the current system.

Second, the meta can just adapt around this awareness. It already happens to some extent, but when you know a team picking at the top of the second wants to move back, the other GMs can outright refuse to stop them gaining additional value. Which then opens up the possibility of another team moving up for very cheap, etc.

Have plenty more I thought about saying but it'll get too ramble-y. I see your point, but I think our imperfect system might still be better than the alternatives.

I think we're forgetting about the team willing to trade up for that spot - they might want to jump someone else, and a team with a GM R2 pick is probably going to be the most willing to trade back for cheap. I understand that this seems like an exploit but t does open up for more trading options for teams that want to make the jump up and take someone. It's another thing for GMs to think about and strategize over.

I agree that it's not a perfect solution, but i don't think there's a better solution.

Maybe if the pick that they are supposed to use is removed from the draft altogether?

So if a team has the 14th pick and that needs to be used to choose their GM player, we go from 13 to 15, so they get their player and can't trade down in the 2nd round

Just outlaw gm players
