I received a letter today from a young fan. A child in fact. He requested Bronko of all players show up to his party. I have never been one to turn down a party even a child's birthday party. Cake and food for free sign the Bronko up. On the day I drive over in my pickup truck and make sure to bring along a signed jersey. I also have a few wrapped gifts and a bunch of team swag for the party as a whole. The kid sees me pull up and he smiles. I am sure nobody thought I was actually going to show. I hand out the swag and give the birthday boy the jersey. I set the other gifts on the table. I am offered and eat several hamburgers and eventually, it is cake time. We all sing happy birthday and I get my hands on a huge piece of the cake. After that sweet sweet cake, it is present time. The kid tears into a basketball and a football and even a bike. It is time for my two remaining gifts. He opens them and finds a pair of tickets to the next liberty game with locker room passes. The last gift is a pair of tickets to the next big wrestling show. All in all that is a birthday this kid will never likely forget.

The season has kicked off with a bang and through the first four weeks, we have had an incredibly exciting slate of games. While my own team, the Colorado Yeti, are off to a hot start and seem to finally be reaching their potential, some teams have started off a bit hotter than expected and some are underachieving compared to expectations. On the good end of this has been the Orange County Otters. Coming into this season, I thought that Orange County would be a middling team who might be in contention for the ASFC's third seed come end of season but more than likely would be on the outside looking in. As it is they seem to be the clear number two team in the ASFC with their only loss being a close game against the team that is the early favorite to win it all. They've come out strong, but its a long season and we will see if they are still challenging the Otters for the one spot come the end of the season. On the other end of the spectrum are the Berlin Fire Salamanders. This is a team who started off strong with a massive win streak last season and ended with the one seed in the NSFC. They were a true threat and they got better in the off season. They looked to open up the season as a juggernaut, but instead are sitting at a disappointing two wins and two losses. They still have one of the strongest rosters in the league though and I don't think this start is indicative of their season. Mark my words, this team will be much better than .500 by playoffs.

I always knew there were some young Hahaluans out there who liked the team, and I have seen them throughout the stadiums and at some away games. However, imagine my surprise when my agent gave me a letter from one such young Hahaluan and asked me to go to their birthday party. At first, I had no clue what to do, as I had to probably clear it with some people, skip crucial training days and team practices, and probably have to make the trip more about the birthday party and do some other things. But, I had to put all of that aside. It was about the child.

I flew to the child's town a day early and got myself ready for everything. I met up with his parents and discussed how things would go. His father described his love for football and how he loved the Hahalua for a multitude of reasons. But, the mother told me that the child's favorite player...was me. I knew it was a good idea to go, and it made me feel like I was something special (for once to be honest). The time rolled around for the party to start as I hid in a side room for about 30 minutes, but was signaled to come out as "one last gift." The moment I came out, the child's face lit up, and immediately stuck on to me. From there on, I stuck around til the party ended and everyone went home, and I had to go back to Hawaii to get back to training, but the child kept telling me that I was the best birthday gift ever. That felt great.

Melvin didn’t check his mail frequently, it was always a bit hard to open the letters, but this week he happened to look through the letters that his agent had left for him on the table. Instead of just chewing them and eating them like he normally would, there was something about the picture that caught his eye. It was a drawing from a little kid. “Pleeze com to mi parti” the note said. The picture is enclosed below. While Melvin found himself wondering whether or not this was the child he wanted to be a role model for (it was a little bit of an aggressive picture), he also couldn’t help but being looked up to. After the unfortunate incident with Cake 6 years earlier, Melvin had done a lot of work over the past several year with therapists and rehabilitation centers to focus on his obsessive need to have cake, as well as his incredibly aggressive and angry mindset. However, despite all of that, when a little kid draws you a picture asking for the murder moose, you absolutely have to attend. He made his way onto the team plane to fly to the birthday party. While he was celebrating with the kids, his parents brought out a lifesize pinata of the birthday boy himself. “Murder him, Melvin!!” the boy shouted. Unbeknownst to Melvin, there were blood packets hidden inside of the pinata too. As he destroyed it with his antlers, the boy cheered loudly and Melvin became once more a sight to behold. While it was an unconventional birthday party, it was one that the little boy would never forget.

So far this season hasn't gone entirely as expected, but when does it ever? The San Jose Sabercats in my opinion have overachieved tremendously this far into the season on the ASFC. Sitting at 3-1, their wins have come against the Liberty (currently in rebuild), the Silverbacks (inconsistent play), and the Second Line (also in rebuild). Not really an impressive resume to be quite honest. I think once the Sabercats play someone of better caliber, they'll start getting exposed for what they are. So it should be interesting to see. On the other side, it would be they Yeti. The fact they sit at the top of the conference with a -4 point differential is quite abysmal. It should be of note going forward if they can continue this, but I think that's quite doubtful.

As far as underachieving, I have to go with the Second Line for the ASFC. Each game has been decided by one possession. If any of those were in the Second Line's favor, they would be 4-0, but then again, if that did happen, I'd have to put them in the overachieving column. And on the NSFC, it would have to be the Butchers. They have the opposite problem as the Yeti where they have a +7 point differential with a 1-3 record. That's an ouch right there.

Well I know you're not supposed to shit on your own team in these sorts of things, but if I'm being honest, i can't help but wonder if the Colorado Yeti are over achieving. Currently we are first in the NSFC. Granted, that's only after four games, so its just early enough in the season for everyone to overreact to how teams seem to be doing. Here's some proof, I suppose, by just looking at the points columns. Currently we have scored only 107 points which puts us at 6th in the league and we have allowed 111 points (that's right, more than we've scored) which puts us at 10th in the league. What about our wins and losses? Two of our three wins were by 3 points or less and the third was over the Honolulu Hahalua which haven't won a game yet. Our one loss came to the Chicago Butchers which have only won one game so far this season. In terms of average tpe per player on the team, Colorado ranks at a pedestrian eighth with 828. Now, of course, the caveat with all of this is that it is still early in the season and there is still plenty of time for us to show that we really do deserve to be up at the top of the charts. I think given their performance last year, the Honolulu Hahalua should look to bounce back the rest of this season and might end up at a solid .500.

Of course Kiara would go to a birthday party!!! Kiara loves parties and loves helping kids! She was a kindergarten teacher in one of her previous lives, so she loves helping children. For the party, Kiara would make sure to bring football helmets for all the children and bring along fun books about football to read to all of them. In fact, Kiara’s been working on writing her own children’s book about football so that she could do stuff like this more often for classrooms in the offseason. Kiara would also offer to cater the birthday through KFP, so that everyone could enjoy some nice fried chicken!
The only problem would be that the kid’s party would be in the middle of the season and the team might not let her go. If she were given the opportunity to do this in the offseason, she might be spending every week going out to different parties helping entertain kids. She really wants to help out children and would be more than willing to spend time going around from school to school as a special guest speaker about anything! Kiara may be an athlete now, but she never truly leaves behind the jobs of her past lives. Whether it’s an idol, the CEO of a fast food restaurant, or a kindergarten teacher, Kiara will always be Kiara.

Standing surprises are all over the place in the league, from the Berlin Salamanders being only .500 to the Sabercats being above .500. However, of all the truly surprising results I think the Copperheads stand out the most. Picked by most to be a playoff team and my personal choice for second best team in the conference, they've scored less than 100 points despite having a strong OLine, the best RB in the league, and one of the best WR groups in the league. What's more shocking is the teams that they lost to. Their schedule has not been the easiest so far, but they went off the rails during the week 3+4 doubleheader. The first game against the Second Line is likely to be one of the biggest upsets of the entire season, pitting a team with 4 players over 1000 against a team with 7 players over 1200. The Second Line's 3rd LB is Hingle McCringleberry. Austin's is Dex Kennedy. And yet, somehow, Austin lost. The easy place to blame is the D who let up multiple massive plays including the game winning 80 yard touchdown catch with just over 2 minutes on the clock. The offense wasn't up to snuff either though, with 3.9 yards per carry and a 5.3 yards per attempt for the day. Penalties were also a massive contributing factor. While as a team the Second Line are the more inexcusable loss, how the Silverbacks beat them behind a banner day from the rookie running back Brandon Prince is more interesting. As far as bouncing back, it's going to take them winning some games they have a significant chance to lose, starting tonight against the Sailfish. Their next 6 games include only one against a bottom feeder but also only one against a team who is significantly better than them. If they get out of that stretch with a winning record I can see them riding an easy end of schedule (they face 4 of the bottom 6 teams in the league on paper during their final 6 games) to the playoffs.

The other side is much easier. The San Jose Sabercats ARE one of the bottom 6 teams on paper in the league and are blatantly riding a single upset victory and an easy schedule to their current winning record, after beating both the Second Line and the Liberty. While they do get the benefit of facing the Hawks in the second half of the season, they also face the Wraiths and Salamanders, and begin the current week of play with a game against the Outlaws. Due to how things stack up I wouldn't be surprised if this week was the last week in which they end up with a winning record all season.
