(S5) - PT 3 - Surprises - White Cornerback - 01-02-2018

Honestly I believe that Tegan Atwell will struggle this season, especially if she's playing anywhere near the CB position. We already know that the OCO defense is supported by it's strong front 7 and realistically anybody beyond that is a liability DESPITE the effort and work they've put in to gain TPE. Combine this with essentially a rookie that may line up at CB who only has 90 speed and a worrying 71/72 agility against some of the top targets in the league? Even the second best receivers on a team? It's nightmare fuel to put it simply.

We hope that Atwell plays either FS or SS for OCO who have found success in that corps in the past, but realistically speaking, won't the front 7 be able to carry Atwell, Spector and King just like they did so in the past? Let's not fool ourselves, OCO are making the playoffs, and they will be in the Ultimus, but for how long can their CB ranks keep under performing?

Will this be the year that either, King, Spector or even the rookie Atwell will step up and prevent the Orange County Otters secondary from getting torched? Or will it be a return to the mediocrity that we've seen before...business as usual.

Matt Akselsen is going to come close to Mike Boss numbers this season. He might even break a couple of records. At this point Akselsen looks like the one most poised to unseat Mike Boss as the undisputed greatest QB in the NSFL. What is even more impressive is that he will likely do it with a weaker WR corps led by Bailey Cook, of course the swiss army knife of Eric Kennedy will be likely used a lot on the passing game as well. I expect by the end of the season that Akselsen will have thrown for over 5200 yards while also having the lowest sack totals in the game. Although he is technically a mobile quarterback most of those skills we be used to evade pass rushers and not pick up yardage with his feet. Make no mistake though, he is not going to beat Mike Boss this season in yardage, but he is going to get very close and it will not be the clear-cut case this year as it was last year that Mike Boss was the greatest player in the league that season. The Wraiths are the Otters biggest competition to take home the season five title and Akselsen is a major part of that.

The biggest surprise in the NSFL next season is going to be Mike Boss. The surprise is going to be that he will somehow continue to put up incredible numbers, even though he was declared dead by many way back in S1. Boss holds many current records in the league for a corpse, and I expect him to build upon this. The league will be shocked that this team still puts up with their quarterbacks shenanigans and allow him to play with them still. Boss will surprise those who still have not bought into the idea that he is the best in the league. There will still be those who are surprised Boss hasn’t tested positive for any banned substances. Luckily for Boss, the only surprises that this author projects for the upcoming season is going to be on the stat sheet. The Otters have improved their offense overall and have provided him with plenty of weapons. Boss has managed to get his head on straight for the most part, and it seems as if he is actually maturing before our eyes. There could be another surprise for Boss and the fans down the line, when he becomes a first ballot Hall of Famer.

I think Austin Roenick (@Leafer) is going to surprise a lot of people this season in the DSFL. It was such a heavy quarterback group of players and Roenick was picked 16th overall in the fourth round, but he’s already standing out compared to a lot of them. He doesn’t have the money like Borkus Maximus does as a recreate, but he’s been working really hard on getting all this point tasks, activity checks, and has not missed an update yet. It might be rough for Portland starting out, but I think Roenick will end up being even better than Jameis Christ as the season goes on and Roenick gets better. He’ll probably pass Christ in TPE by mid-season if he continues his journey and will be the best quarterback in the DSFL. I think a lot of people will be surprised at how well the Pythons do in the passing game. Speaking of the team, I think the Pythons will surprise everyone and win the championship again. They lost 3 of their super star players last season, but I came back and our new group of draftees are already better. Overall, I think we will have a better group by the end of the season than last year when I joined late.

The biggest surprise will certainly be the Las Vegas Legion whose name I keep typing as the Las Vegion. During a tumultuous offseason which saw local whipping boy Connor Tanner force, cajole, blackmail, extort, and bamboozle many Legion players into retiring the new leadership looks to right the ship. There are probably few people expecting the Legion to finish anywhere but the basement but that is exactly what's going to happen. Surprise.

The biggest reason that this will happen is because Arizona is going to be bad. After a truly hilarious number of multis were caught and banned from their roster, the Outlaws are faced with a mediocre roster and won't be able to cheat their way out of it. Sure, King Bronko is one of the top quarterbacks in the league but their offense is decimated around him. Reg Mackworthy at 524 TPE and Budda Browning at 417 TPE are the next highest TPE players on offense. The Legion meanwhile will have a 412 TPE quarterback, 658 TPE receiver, 428 TPE running back, and 429 TPE tight end and with a young, active roster their depth should make up ground on the Outlaws quickly. In fact, taking the total TPE of the impact offensive players (top QB, RB, WR, and TE), Arizona is in last place in the ASFC, trailing Las Vegas 1927-1923. The Outlaw defense is still very sturdy at the top and outclasses Las Vegas by a lot but has holes that can be exploited and this is going to be a rough season for them. Vegas will win a few close games, get some fortunate bounces, and finish above Arizona this season. Book it.

I don't really know enough to write about anyone else just yet so I'm going to be an arrogant so and so and write about why Cordell Joshua could surprise a few people this season with the Chicago Coyotes. The Coyotes defensive group has a lot of glaring holes, particularly on the defensive line, and a lot of the responsibility to keep things running to any sort of standard is going to fall on Joshua's shoulders. The athleticism Joshua has, the strength and speed to make big plays and beat his opposite number will be a big asset for the Coyotes, it gives them the ability to get aggressive with their play calling and be a deadly effective pass rush defense which without a lot of talent in their secondary or linebackers could be the secret to their success this season. I think Joshua could be one of the best defensive rookies in the DSFL this season, he has the potential and opportunity to put up strong numbers in both sacks and tackles, and I expect him to be a real handful for offensive lines all season long, despite his lowly status as a post draft waiver claim. That's why Cordell Joshua is my pick for S5's surprise package.

Going off of the preseason, Boss Tweed's performance this season may surprise some people and not in a good way. Many expect a career season for Tweed as he will be running behind the best offensive line of his career and an improved passing attack will prevent defenses from stacking the box and create more openings for him. However, there may be some concern about Tweed's performance based on his preseason numbers. He rushed for 396 yards and 2 touchdowns on 137 carries. This would put him on pace for 1386 yards and 7 touchdowns on 480 carries. On the surface these look like good numbers as they would be career highs for Tweed in all 3 categories and single season records in yards and carries. His fantasy owners wouldn't mind this stat line. Here's the issue: Tweed averaged a measely 2.9 yards per carry in the preseason, which is the 2nd lowest average among starting running backs. Though he would be on pace to break his single season rushing yards record, he would be on pace to gain just 11 more yards than he did in Season 3 on 80 more carries. While Tweed would be on pace to break his records for volume stats, he would be on pace for his worst efficiency by a wide margin. The Yeti are looking to make improvements this year and it is concerning to see a star play regressing when he should be in the best shape of his career. Perhaps the Yeti will not be giving Tweed as many carries in the regular season and he will be able to play better with a lesser workload? Or perhaps the preseason was just an anomaly and he will get back on track in the regular season? Or perhaps Tweed was just a flash in the pan and it's time for the Yeti to find a new running back? We will see once the season gets going.

The player who will surprise everyone in the upcoming DSFL season is none other than Poopyface Tomatonose. Not only will people be amazed by his on-field talents, but his humility will earn him the admiration of fans all around the DSFL. He did not play a single preseason snap as a result of a glitch in the Chicago Coyotes' new robo coach model Robert Ott. This has Tomatonose flying firmly under the radar entering the regular season, but he is ready to shine when things kick off this month.

Tomatonose has already been a pleasant surprise for his teammates and the Chicago management duo. His rambunctious, energetic locker room personality really livens things up in the Coyotes' locker room. His work ethic and dedication have impressed ownership. The question that needs answering is whether or not those things will translate into on field success when the DSFL season begins.

At this point I'm struggling to even find words to describe just how radical Poopyface Tomatonose is. Here are some adjectives: sensational, unbelievable, outrageous, outgoing, mad scientist, visionary, leader, soft hands having, wunderkind, brilliant, marvelous, verbose, grandiose, eloquent, concise, oxymoronic, and stupendous. These are just a handful of words that can be used to describe him. Are the more than this? Absolutely there are. Will I list anymore? No.

The Pythons offense is going to decimate competition this year. There is no other way to put it, but the Portland offense is already looking to be just as good or even better than the all time best team from last years Portland Pythons team. With receiving weapons Glenn Mcpoyal, Blessed Storm, and Dwayne Aaron, young stud quarterback Austin Roenick will be shredding defenses left and right with 5 touchdowns and an ungodly amount of yards. not to mention the new acquisition at the running back position, Borro Gore will certainly get the ground and pound game going, and even help out receiving the ball as well. It's starting to look like the only team that can hold this freight train of an offense to under 50 points will be Tijuana, and that's just because they spent all of their draft picks on defense. Make sure to place your bets and buy your tickets to the ultimini, where Portland will no doubt be. As for the competition? Don't be surprised when Portland wins by the biggest landslide in DSFL ultimini history. There will be records broken this year, and it all started when everyone thought the Portland Pythons GM completely screwed the draft. Just as everyone thought last year.

He's heard your jeers, he's heard your jokes and he's seen your memes. Now Colorado Yeti quarterback Nicholas Pierno is ready to show the league that the Yeti's front office didn't make a mistake in making the late-round draft pick its quarterback of the future. With his speed and agility both above 80 due to his offseason knee physical therapy, an issue that had been hurting him since an injury during the ACC Championship game during his senior year of college, he's ready to lead the best rushing offense in NSFL history. In the preseason, Pierno ran for 130 yards on 4 yards per carry, a mark alone that would've made him the top rushing QB in the league a year ago for a full regular season. The Yeti's rushing game will be near impossible to stop for opposing defenses as Tweed and Pierno keep the league on its toes. Tweed is lowkey one of the highest TPE players in the league and it’s not out of question to see him break the league record for all-purpose yards as he lines up as a returner on special teams, starting running back and as an occasional wide receivers when Colorado does need to throw the pigskin.
