Suggested Change:
One suggested change to the National Simulation Football League would be the balance of positions. If you look at where the best teams in the league are starting their players, many different archetypes excel at positions outside their stated designations. Defensive tackles are beating defensive ends at sacks and tackles for loss, running backs are being used as receivers, and the traditional workhorse running back is terrible. Over the last few games, TJ Yates, a free agent signed running back by the Otters is one of their leading receivers by catches and yardage. While TJ is a good player, traditional Wide Receivers should excel to a greater extend in their own position, and not require inside knowledge of the sim to be a top flight prospect. Words: 126

Suggested Removed:
One suggested aspect of the National Simulation Football League which I would remove is the offensive passing Bias. Boss Tweed is the highest TPE running back in the league, and has been for several seasons, yet his yards per carry is averaging to two point nine yards a carry, widely considered to be failing in traditional football circles. The best running back in the league by yards, Savea, is averaging three point one yards a carry. The longest rushing play this season after six games is twenty seven yards by Pierno. For the league to gain any balance on offense, this deficit in rushing percentage needs fixing, for the good of the league. Words: 113

Currently Like:
One great benefit the league currently has going is the parity of teams in contention. At week four, five different teams had three wins and one loss records, creating a great pileup for who should be considered the league leader and favorite for to win the Ultimus trophy. While as the fifth season continues a few teams may pull away in the standings, but in general the league will still be fairly balanced in competition, as the best teams jockey for position and home field advantage in the Ultimus tournament to come, one of the most important aspects of the league is the balance it currently is holding tight to. 1. Streamlined Player Creation Process

I think it'd be awesome to have some sort to GUI for player creation, which would properly notify users when their player is over the threshold for points spent. One of the most confusing things for me when creating a player was figuring out the update scale. If there's a user interface where they can see how many points they've spent, along with an update scale, would be great. Upon a player being created, there could be a notification sent out to all the appropriate parties who would then create the player in the game or what not. A restrictive user interface would make things much easier and would eliminate some back and forth.

2. Skill Caps/Archetypes

This may be unpopular, and I'm not entirely familiar with the sim or why these are in place, but I think it'd be cool to be able to build my guy exactly as I'd like, without any restriction on how high I can take a skill attribute. I think it's kind of strange that the power backs have a strength cap of 95, and speed backs have a speed cap of 100. An alternative to this idea would be to add the ability to increase the skill cap of a skill by 5 a set number of times, to add additional diversity in player builds.

3. Documentation

I think the league does a great job of documenting the rules and regulations. One caveat would be having all of these docs in an easy to navigate wiki or other form of display. I think the docs are so detailed and top notch among any sim league I've been in. The only issue is finding the relevant documentation. The rookie guide was incredibly thorough and helped me quite a bit in terms of learning how things worked and where everything was that I was interested in. So getting all of those docs in it's own dedicated space, and potentially adding some search functionality, would be great!

1. I think that we should add more ways to spend money than we currently have. Although this could potentially overpower recreates, we could also put some sort of penalty on recreates (a delay on how long until they can spend a set amount of money maybe?) but I think if we implemented more ways to spend it, we could really reward those who are active in the community doing media daily or working community jobs. For example someone could donate money to a charity, and for every 3mil they donate they get an additional 2TPE for example. A special 'High intensity' training camp could also be introduced. It could raise a certain stat tremendously for that weeks game (and only that week) and then the next game a stat would be heavily penalized, like endurance. It would make players prepare for a game against the otters, and relax during a game with the Yeti. it would also make a team plan when they would use their training, to prevent gassing all their starters and getting blown out the next week.

2. I think that the current retirement plan is garbage. Only 7 seasons of high level play? Brady is 40 fucking years old. Maybe for a running back for example 7 years works, but kickers and quarterbacks and other positions can go longer than others. Wide receivers should play for a good long time, Tight ends too. I mean I guess it can be fair to keep certain positions cycling but ugh only 7 seasons and then my player plummets into TPE loss. So bad, and it really prevents someone from getting to go around the league in Free Agency. I want to be loyal and spend my entire career with whoever drafts me, but if that doesn't work out I'd like to be the wandering nomad that travels from team to team filling in the pieces needed to win the Ultimus

3. I love the way that player progression works. This is my first sim league and at first I was so confused but after I joined the Portland Pythons I had so much help that I generally know what I am doing now. I really like how you have to put in some time to progress your character and extra effort is rewarded. I also like the way that money is earned. Being able to get on every day and see what media was published and read all of it is really cool to me. Seeing other peoples perspectives on the league is cool. Anyway I hope this league stays around long enough for me to retire 22 players who are all the GOAT at their position.

Thing I like

One thing I really like about the NSFL is the TPE format. When I was told about this league, by BWestfield, he explained it to me and I was like "Sign me up." The idea that the more active you are, and the more time you put in, the better your player's stats will be appealed to me. I love football and the idea of being a player in the league. I don't mind writing for TPE, predictions and other TPE opportunities are my favorite parts of this game. Unlike many, I don't find the updating of my character's sheet confusing or annoying at all.

(105 TPE)

Thing I'd Remove/Change

One thing I would like changed is career lengths to increase. Allow me to elaborate. Firstly, depending on the position, your career should vary before you start to regress. Some positions, like QB and Kicker can go in real life for well over a decade before regression kicks in. The idea that 7 years is when regression kicks in is absurd since you're really not good at being a QB until year 3. Most players in this league, even as rookies, aren't very useful season 1, so to say only 6 years of good play before you decline is too short. Running Backs would be the exception, they're a position that regresses fairly quickly. Aside from elites like Emmitt Smith, top tier backs only last a solid 7-9 years at most. Look at Peterson, who we felt dominated for so long was actually only good for 8 years. So, that cap makes sense for them. But a QB or DB, who can have a career go long like Carson Palmer, who just retired after 13 years, you can really say he only regressed this past season (as he threw over 4k yards consistently). Or Champ Bailey who played 14 years, and only really his final season was a bust. Ronnie Lott was good for 12. I understand these examples buck trends, but it's a case that 7 is too short for those positions. 9 or 10 makes more sense for DBs, and 10 to 11 for QBs. Kickers is even longer. Even a mediocre kicker like Nick Folk can be in the league after 10 seasons. Top level Kickers, like Adam Vinatieri, have been in the league longer than a good portion of the people playing here have been alive. That's 21 seasons now. Regression at 7 is an absurdity.

One thing I'd Add

Change how Recreates are done. Retirements in a league like this are far too common. Especially when the player recreates, leaving their team SOL. I think the sooner a player retires the harsher the penalty should be on the Recreated player. We have several users who, in 6 seasons, or less, have had 3 different players, which is 2 retirements. As someone who enjoys the team building aspect, it is frustrating when you have a young talent just retire and recreate out of sheer boredom and screw over the team. I feel, if you recreate before 4 seasons, your starting TPE for the new player should be cut. Instead of the 50 TPE you get to play around with when creating, you only get 25. This is to encourage people to stick around their team/player for a while. We have position changes and archetype changes for the reason of players not being happy with their player's build. Far too often do people just bail and recreate. Additionally, I think a bonus should be given to players who see their player to Regression level. Any player who retires after 7 seasons (or longer if my above changes gets instituted) gets a bonus 50 TPE to spend when recreating, since they've shown dedication to this league and have the diligence to see it through to a full career. Anyone who retires between that 4 season quota, and their player's regression years, recreates as normal.

One thing that I would like to add to the league is some form of interactive TPE updater, where you can experiment with how you allocate your TPE and how that affects your overall rating/progression. New recruits (like me) can be confused as to where best to allocate their TPE, and while the team and league discord channels can be helpful, a guide or interactive program would be extremely helpful. For example, a linebacker would be able to see the difference between allocating TPE towards speed and intelligence, and how that could affect how many tackles they get. A kicker like myself could use a guide or tool to see if placing TPE in Kick Power would be more useful for overall progression than Kick Accuracy, or if Intelligence plays more of a factor. With the current set up (you don't know your new ratings until they are updated), it can be a bit of a guessing game. That may be intentional (as to not make things too easy), but it makes things a bit more confusing for new players.

One thing I would like to remove/change is to make some more new-to-DSFL-budget-friendly equipment purchases/training sessions. Having a $2 million contract (which hasn't registered with the bank yet) and a GFX submission that hasn't been graded since December make it hard for me to purchase any equipment, as I don't even have $1 million to my name yet. While we obviously don't want to make things too easy, it would be nice to be able to spend some of that money to boost my player while still on a small contract. I think using Twitter to earn money is cool (and extremely easy), but that's basically the only money making scheme I've got so far, and as a result I haven't spent any money.

One thing I like about the league is how easy it is to get started as a rookie, and how willing other members of the community are to help you. I've tried other simulation leagues and quickly washed out, but between the TPE/money incentives to remain active and the (eventual) beginning of the season, I have found myself checking in almost daily. Being able to watch streams is nice as well (although I never seem to be around for them), and being able to view detailed statistics after the streams is really incredible. The community has always been there to help, whether in my team discord, the league discord, or the rookie discord, and as a result I don't feel completely blind going in for my first season. As others have said, I think it would be nice to have a consolidated wiki for players (rather than things being placed in Create a Player), and we could even add league and team history to the wiki as well (as those are sitting as empty forums currently).

ADDED
It's difficult to narrow down the many things I'd like to add to just one. That said, the one big improvement I want to put in place as fast as we possibly can is an official line of communication. Things are constantly in unsure position. Things aren't updated. People miss @'s. There's chaos and general disorganization in terms of schedules, upcoming events, game times, etc. TWO different GM's missed streams today. Simply because they didn't know the streams were happening already. The players in the league have stated over and over that communication is minimal and lacking.

We need a dedicated communications team that gathers and relays information from the behind the scenes to the public. We need it badly. Adding this will go a long way towards making people feel like they know what's going on and when and increase enjoyment in the league by a ton for a very large percentage of our players.

REMOVED
Ambiguity. That's what I want to remove. It's everywhere. Punishments for infractions. Which things ARE infractions. What people can and can't do. Who's in charge of this. Who do I see about that. When do I get approved? Why do some of my updates say that I can still add stuff for another day while other don't? When is the next stream?

This league functions better when people are generally informed as to what's going on one way or another. The commutations team I mentioned is one facet that can be useful in getting rid of some ambiguity but there are many more. I have a lot of ideas and alterations in mind for this, and one of my two big goals will be removing so much of the ambiguity and consternation that has plagued us the entire time I've been here. I know that may seem a tad generic, for which I apologize.

LIKE
I like the people first and foremost. I have a ton of fun being in and around the NSFL community. I'm having a blast and if I'm doing my shit right, I'm helping other people have a blast, too. We have 100+ people who sign in every single day. And we're just getting going here. That's awesome.

I like the puzzle of running a team. I like a fellow GM losing his mind because my safety caught two touchdowns while making a cameo in my offense. I enjoy figuring out how to make trades that benefit everyone because unlike the actual NFL, this isn't a business and the people we're moving around get a say for the most part. I like the draft podcast where 4 really well informed league guys were so behind on the giant smoke and mirrors show I put up that they didn't even realize I already had 4 solid starters in my secondary.

I like building something. The GMs and HOs can tell you that I'm VERY active behind the scenes trying to work on things to improve the league. The kind of people who see a sim sports league and think "well hell yeah that sounds fun" are my kind of people and I want to do the best in my ability to make sure its better for everyone. In this case that requires building, and I'm enjoying doing it. It's nice to be able to point at things people like and say you had a hand in it, especially when its stuff you're also enjoying with them. That's huge. I mean, when I first explained this to my wife she said "I think you found your tribe." :belly:

1 thing that you would like added to the league
I think adding a way for players to do their updates through a web form or character builder would be a great thing to add to the league. I think I’d be really lost if I didn’t have someone stepping me through how to create a player and updating him. It’s nice to have the rookie mentors and people around, but as a new player sometimes you just want to play around with something and not have to ask questions every time. If we had a site where we could do updates easier than I think it would turn more people onto the league itself.

1 thing that you would like removed
I’d like to see the DSFL inactives removed. We already made 2 bot teams and allowed those GMs to customize their players so why not the rest? After the DSFL draft, let the remaining teams build out their rosters with their own 70 TPE or whatever bots around the new players they drafted. It just really sucks to play with inactives on my team and I’d rather they be bots that the DSFL GM created that would actually help us win games instead of taking whatever best inactive was available. This would help GMs build around their own players to showcase their abilities.

1 thing that you currently like.
I love the live streams even though I don’t get to watch them all the time and at least their recorded for me to go back to. I like the idea of being able to watch myself play and it helps me connect with the league and my player better since I can actually see myself doing things or at least trying to do things. It’s a better connection than just reading the index and trying to visualize how I did while reading the play by play. I think this is a big draw for the league and helps new players get excited about their updates.

(S5) - Special PT - Changes - bovovovo - 01-09-2018

1. I am still a proponent of creating a league youtube channel which has all of the streams uploaded. This way we would have historical records of every game simmed (for people without the advanced twitch account or whatever it's called), would help with marketing, and helps make our streams (which sets us apart from other leagues in my opinion) more front-and-center. The name of the game is ease of access to the streams and easy accessibility for those who missed it, aren't on twitch, etc. We don't want our streams to be hidden behind discord/twitch, we should want them as accessible as possible.

(105 words)

2. This may be unique to being a GM but I think I would like the sim file to be updated ASAP, maybe even during the streams and just trust that GMs won't look or spoil anything. I say this because I typically do my testing for the next games in the morning the next day as I am busy with work / school in the afternoons, and I don't think I'm the only one. This gives GMs more time to prepare, leading to less stress and (hopefully) better games. I know back when Er did it the sim file was updated almost immediately after the games, and I know this may be hard for the current HO because of schedules (which is perfectly fine I think). I think personally I would almost prefer if the sim file were uploaded during the streams and just enforce that GMs shouldn't look or spoil anything or they'd be punished rather than have to wait for the sim file. I may be alone in that though, idk.

(173 words)

3. I really like how the league seems to be developing it's own culture, especially between the different teams. Of course, this may create some problems when people start recreating, as they may want to stay with their previous team where they have friends or something. Personally I think this will be fine, but it will create an interesting situation going forward. I also really really like the GM rules summit. I think it's a fantastic idea and we should definitely keep it up. I think giving site users a voice is always a good thing, and it helps the HO with decision making as it gets people that are involved a chance to voice how they think things can be improved. My one issue is that I wish it was a little earlier, maybe during the playoffs rather than offseason, so that the changes can affect the upcoming offseason.

One:
I desperately want to see a NSFL YouTube channel created. It could host all past streams, which would be great for people who missed the livestream, want to watch historic NSFL games, or even just new players who want to binge watch their new teams’ old games (aka what I would’ve done when I first joined if we had a channel). It could also have some official “welcome to the NSFL” and “how to get started” videos, and maybe even some hype videos (less info, more GET HYPED FOR FOOTBALL). Oh, and lastly, it could have draft streams, which I know we haven’t always had, but I think should be a priority if possible.

Two:
Please, please, can we stop relocating teams so much? And even some current team locations are ridiculous. Look, I know we’re a sim league - our players and teams aren’t real - and people want the team they GM to have some connection to them, but... the relocations I’ve seen are completely unrealistic. I know this may not be a big deal to some people, but this is easily the most frustrating thing in the league for me. First of all, no city would realistically let some team come in and build a stadium for a fledgling football league when they built a stadium just 4-5 years ago and are already moving out. Do NFL teams move? Yes, but rarely. The Chargers, Rams, and Raiders are outliers, and they are part of a huge historic league. Also the fans from their old cities largely hate them? In a small league with not too many fans, you’d want to avoid that... Anyway, let’s now talk about some specific relocations. Chicago to Palm Beach. Just why? Not gonna lie, Solar Bears colors and logo is actually pretty sweet, but Chicago is a huge market. Why would you want to move out of that, when the expenses and fan cost of relocating are so massive? And yes, Kansas City moved to Chicago.... but now you’ve left Kansas City behind. Also, I’ve heard people talk about the Legion relocating. Whether or joking or serious, it makes no sense. Las Vegas is an awesome place to have a team.
Now, I don’t want to be making non-constructive criticism, so I’ll offer an alternative to relocation: re-branding! Is it ideal? In my opinion no, but it’s a whole lot better than relocating.
Except for one team. And that team is the Yellowknife Wraiths. Why is the team not in Toronto? Or Quebec City? Why in the Northwest Territories? As of just now, I’m actually an advocate for moving the Wraiths to a much larger, much nearer-the-border Canadian city.

Before I move on to part three, this is in no way meant to attack anybody who wants to move their team or has moved their team. I’m not against you... I’m just against what you happen to want to do. Tongue

Three:
I’ve never been a member of a sim league till this one, but I know the fact that games are streamed makes us very unique, and I’m very thankful for it. Because, honestly, I cannot even imagine how monumentally boring it would be for me as a kicker to, after every week, have to go look at the index and box scores and dig through the play by play just to find out how my kickoffs were (something the sim doesn’t track in index), the exact yardage of my kicks, if any kicks or XPs were blocked and not just missed, how the team ended up at the point I’m kicking from, etc. Doing that on occasion is annoying but, eh, oh well. Sometimes like last night I miss a stream, no big deal. But I could not do that every week. As it is, in the streams I’ve never once seen my player because special teams plays aren’t shown! I want to be able to see how I end up in a position at least. TLDR: huge shoutout to everyone who makes the streams happen. I’d be here without them.... but not nearly as active as I am.

(S5) - Special PT - Changes - PaytonM34 - 01-09-2018

ADD:

As others have previously said, the one thing I would most like to be added to the NSFL is a youtube channel for watching archived games. This has so much potential to bring in money to the website through ads, and potentially more people coming across the videos and wanting to sign up. It would also be great to re-watch a championship game that you had participated in a couple seasons back. The visual simulation is what sets this league apart from the other sim leagues, and having an easy way to access the games would just emphasize on that.

100 words

REMOVE:
I would like the league to have a system that removes inactive players from both NSFL and DSFL teams. Having an inactive high TPE player in DSFL is only beneficial to the GM's of that team. I approve of the new rule change where an active player cannot sit behind an inactive player, but let's say a team has a 150 TPE inactive quarterback. That DSFL team is not likely to take a new QB prospect in the draft, because that would be a downgrade for the team. The DSFL league should be about getting the rookie prospects excited to continue their career into the NSFL, and having inactive players in the DSFL dominate the stat sheet is not the way to do that.

124 words

LIKE:
I currently like the amount of money it takes to completely max out on professional equipment for the season. I have seen a lot of people argue against the 3m price of +8 TPE equipment, but in my opinion, there should be a reward for the people willing to put more time into the league, whether thats through jobs, or media. Especially with the introduction of the twitter payouts, it should not be too difficult to find the money to buy the 1m +5 training each week, and gives each person a chance to save up for 9m or 12m of pro equipment for the season. If I could change anything about the current equipment situation, it would be giving more equipment opportunities to the positions that only require 2/3 pieces of equipment. For example, as a linebacker, only the Cleats, Pads, and Time are worth buying, where as a runningback has the opportunity to buy 4 pieces of useful equipment. Even moreso with Dline players, as Time isnt very impactful for them. I would recommend adding maybe another piece of equipment for defensive players to balance out the potential TPE gain per season.
