(S6) - PT1 - Draft Day Fever - cpetrella - 02-12-2018

I remember being drafted like it was an hour ago... which it was. Being drafted 5th overall in the S7 DSFL Entry Draft was a surprise, but a welcome one of course. I’m super thrilled to be a part of a revitalized San Antonio offense and I’m lookinh forward to a great rookie season.

I was not expecting to go anywhere near the top of the draft, nevermind 5th overall. This was a huge surprise to me but I’m very grateful to the San Antonio front office for having so much faith in me. I was prepared to wait a pretty long time to hear my name called during the draft, but i was pleasantly surprised to hear my name called at number 5, the first pick of the Second Round. When I heard the draft streamers becain to talk about me earlier in the first round, I was intrigued but didn’t expect much of it, but little did I know these people were going to draft me soon after. I was pretty pumped when I got drafted, but then I turned my attention to who would be drafted after me. This person ended up being fellow WR, Jeff Taven. I’m super excited to be team mates with him and I think that him and I have a bright future together as the WR core for the next few seasons. We should able to be a great duel threat together for many seasons.

The most interesting thing about the S2 Draft is that I actually don’t remember it. I’ll go a bit OOC with this one as the more interesting story is the one behind the scenes, but I had just joined the site in late June. I was a fantasy football addict waiting for preseason to start and scouring r/fantasyfootball for any small nugget of information that I could. And suddenly, a post comes up advertising a football simulation league where you could be an actual player. That sounds cool. Something to do while I wait for fantasy to begin. I check it out and decide to make a Running Back. I scroll through the site, but have no idea what I’m looking at. I think I did a few activity checks and my first free training, but I don’t know how else to get TPE. I don’t know anything about the league yet, so I don’t want to embarrass myself and write an article or guess predictions. It’s my first league and I don’t know anyone on the site. I’m lost. Work gets really hectic in July. I’m on the road most of that month. Before I know it, I stop logging in. I’m too busy. I’ll check back once things wind down.

Randomly, I do get curious and log back in around the end of July. I have like 5 messages from some guy named Bzerkap. They’re interested in me. They have questions for me. Oh look, they drafted me in the 12th round. Can’t blame them, though. Inactive RB with 60 TPE. I guess I’m lucky there was even a 12th round to begin with. I guess I now have people in this league I can talk to now, so I start asking a billion questions. They’re telling me about Point Tasks and player build ideas and I’m just kind of going with it because I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing. They also seem like good dudes, though. These guys went out on a limb to grab me when I didn’t give them any reason to, so I’ll try to pull my weight and make them glad they drafted me. We‘ll see if I stick with this… Smile) Smile) Smile)

(Note for the Rookies: Everything in that first paragraph is bad advice. I was new and nervous about embarrassing myself, but don’t worry about that. It’s fine. It’s okay to embarrass yourself. It just means people are more likely to remember you. Do the game predictions. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the teams. It’s a 50/50 guess, anyway. Do media and PTs. If you don’t know a lot about the league yet, just write about yourself. You can learn about the league later. The point of the league is to do things, so do every activity you can. You’ll work out the details later.)

The day Terrell Brister got drafted wasn’t surprising. He knew he would go to Las Vegas (or now NOLA). The young cornerback had a great DSFL season picking up the Defensive Rookie of the Year award (even though he didn’t win it at first but thats a whole other story) and leading the league in picks for corners. He had talked to the GM’s, one of which looked and acted just like him and just knew. As a matter of fact he was so weirded out by the fact that the co-gm looked and acted the same that he looked into it on draft day. As he looked deeper and deeper into it he found that this GM person even had his name! He looked even deeper into this person, this clone even that he found out he had the same parents, grandparents and siblings! He was starting to get very very weirded out. Real Brister continued to think and think and think about who this weird thing could be? Was he just a trip? Was Brister just going crazy? Was playing for this GM just a trap?

Find out all that and more on the next exciting episode of Dragon Ball Z!!!!

One thing you can always count on is Leslie Knope being prepared for a party at any time and for any occassion. In my draft this was proven true once again. I was drafted in the 2nd round of the S6 NSFL draft. We were all hanging out in anticipation to see if and where I would be drafted. The announcement it made, I am drafted by the Wraiths. Boom!! Big banner dropped from the celing "Jack Dwyer Newest Wraith, Best 2nd Round Pick Ever"! Lights change color! Fight song over the speakers! We toasted to the new team and making it to the NSFL. The photo booth had dark cloaks, scary masks, all sorts of spooky props and wear. Then suddenly we find out that I am being traded to the Outlaws before the hour is over and wouldn't you know it but a new banner dropped "Jack Dwyer Newest Outlaw, Best Trade Ever!". The music over the speakers switched and the lights changed color. Photo booth was restocked with cowboy hats, 6-shooters, bandanas, just about anything you could thing of. The Outlaw party was better due to length but I do have to thank Leslie Knope for throwing me the best shortest draft party ever.

Ah yes, I could remember S1 draft night like it was nine months ago, which it was. It was a hot spring night and I was a new member who didn't know what the hell he was doing. It seemed like a pretty cool league and I always liked to kill time simming franchise seasons on madden. I didn't do any press conference or anything other than the activity check and free training. I was only contacted by one team prior to the draft and it turned out that wasn't even the one that drafted me. I didn't really know how to make myself known. But I did drop a hint to anyone who was paying attention: http://nsfl.jcink.net/index.php?showtopic=...findpost&p=5783 Due to the lack of attention I got as a prospect I was pretty sure I would get drafted late. I remember watching the stream for the first few rounds and then went and watched some TV. A little later I got a notification email and saw I had been drafted by the Hawks in round 10. My ego was a bit bruised but was extra motivated to become a good player. I'll spend my entire career with the Hawks as a thanks for their former GMs giving me a chance. (209)

The Season 1 draft was an interesting experience for me. I didn't really know what to expect coming in since this was my first sim league. But I saw a post about it on /r/ravens and thought it sounded like something I would enjoy. I wanted to make a running back but I saw it was a competitive position and some teams already had GM players at running back. However, I decided to give running back a try anyway to see if I could eventually get a starting role. However I was an unknown as a sim league rookie and I'm not very talkative so I didn't really make a name for myself on the forums before the draft. I didn't garner much attention prior to the draft as I was only contacted by one team. The Yellowknife Wraiths already had their GM as a running back but said they would look for a backup running back later in the draft and that I was high on their board of backup running backs.

Nobody had me in the first two rounds of their mock draft so I figured I would fall a bit, but I didn't realize just how far I would fall. The first few rounds went by and all of the starting running back spots were taken. In the middle rounds, teams started taking backup running backs but I still waited for my name to be called. I kept my eye on the Wraiths since I knew the were considering me as a backup. As the rounds went on I continued to wait and wait and wait. Finally, with the second pick of the seventeenth round, the Wraiths took their backup running back. They drafted Jack Stats. I was unsure what would happen when the one team that had been considering me passed on me, but I didn't have much time to wonder about it as I was selected by the Colorado Yeti with the very next pick. The Yeti were both exciting and intimidating as a destination. On one hand, they did not have a GM running back so I would have the chance to stay in one place and work my way up to a starting role but on the other hand, they already drafted two running backs ahead of me so it would take time to overtake them and become the starter. Luckily, the Yeti found a way to run a 3 runnning back rotation so I was able to get playing time right away. Even though I wasn't very sought after in the draft, I knew I could still become a great player if I stayed diligent and kept carefully updating my player. And now 8 months later I'm still going strong. In fact, if my calculations are correct, this PT will be what puts me over 1000 TPE. I guess my story is a good story for incoming prospects to consider, it doesn't really matter when or where you are drafted because you can still become a great player if you stay committed and keep working.

Even a kicker, growing up in the fields of west Virginia, dreams of hearing his name called on draft day and that is exactly what happened in the season 5 draft for kicker Peg Leg. You don’t have to be a big name or be a first or second round draft pick to have the thrill of getting that phone that you have been drafted into the NSFL.

Peg leg hosted a small party for his family and some close friends to watch the draft and then be there when he got the call from his new team. he knew he wasn’t going in the first round and if he went in the second round, it would be toward the end, but both rounds came and went without the leg getting a call.

Once the 20th pick was announced, the phone rang and it was the legion coach telling Peg Leg that he was going to be taken 21st overall in the middle of the 3rd round to start his NSFL career. Once he heard his name announced over the TV, it all set in that all of his hard work paid off and the room at home erupted with cheers and high fives. Little did he know at the time, that he would not even play one snap for the Legion as he would be traded to the Colorado Yeti where he would play his rookie season.

Borkus Maximus III remembers fondly the day he was drafted by New Orleans. It was pretty uneventful, to be honest. You see, he knew he was going in the second round, and he knew it would be to New Orleans. There wasn't much excitement in knowing exactly where you're going to be drafted, it turns out. Nonetheless, Borkus was very excited to get started in the NSFL. His DSFL career was extremely disappointing, to put it lightly. He came onto the scene as a top DSFL prospect, and the consensus 1st overall pick in the DSFL draft, but his play just didn't live up to expectations. He was actually pretty terrible. Kind of embarrassing. Borkus looks forward to proving his multitude of h8rs wrong and he shows that the DSFL was "totally just a phase, mom" and that New Orleans has nothing to worry about with regards to his play. He was excited at hearing his name called, knowing that the team had faith in him as he would be replacing the veteran journeyman Noble at starting QB. And really, that's all Borkus needed: A team that believed in him and would invest in him for their future. The future is looking bright in New Orleans.

The season one draft and the leadup to it was an exciting and chaotic time for the young NSFL. As a new player to sim leagues I was hooked immediately and did everything I could to drive my draft stock up. I was the first to create an offensive lineman, thinking I would be a position in really high demand. I wrote a 3000 word article. Then another article. I asked presser questions. I took a league job. I did everything you're supposed to.

Then the scouting messages came. All three of them. Six teams, three messages. Two were from the same team. I mostly spoke with then Yellowknife GM Bubba Nuck, and then Orange County GM Grapehead. I must have exchanged 20 messages with each of them. I was asking questions, looking for advice, that sort of thing. And then I hit them with the bomb:

Quote:I've run a full analysis on every position and come up with some excellent results that I think will really help. Whoever drafts me should keep a very close eye on their inbox draft night, they may be receiving some really interesting data that could affect the decisions for the rest of the draft
(quoted directly from one of my PMs)

And this was not a lie. I had bought the sim and exported 20 seasons worth of data from a 64 team league in order to analyze how different stats affected production for different positions. And whichever team drafted me would immediately receive a PM on draft night with a summary of all the intelligence I had gathered. And they did.

As the 25th overall pick, going top of the 5th round to Orange County I immediately shot off my "scouting report" you could call it, with all the information I had discovered, like how weight was by far the most important factor for Offensive Line, or how speed and strength were far more important for linebackers than tackling or agility.

And here's the crazy part. My PM was immediately met by an invitation to the staff Discord where I would spend the rest of the draft helping them. Myself, Grapehead, and 1st overall pick Shaka were all there calling the shots. Orange County didn't draft an offensive lineman that day. They drafted a team staff member who I'd like to think has been a small part of the successes we have had.

I learned a very important lesson that day. Draft the person, not the player.
