(S8) - Ultimus Week - Toasty - 06-25-2018 Playoff Predictions: ASFC Championship: ![]() ![]() This is going to be a close game for either team. It will come down to the wire and maybe we will even see some overtime action out there in Orange County. But with NOLA's depleted secondary and Orange County's very scary wide receiver corps I do not see NOLA walking away from this game victorious. Mike Boss will pass for a record setting 475+ yards, 4 touchdowns and a interceptions. Tegan Atwell will have 9 catches for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he will have fumble. Combined the two teams will rush for less than 100 yards. In the end it will be ![]() ![]() NSFC Championship: ![]() ![]() It is no surprise that the wraiths are back here after last yards disappointing loss to the liberty. This year they will be trying not to exercise the demons of Burial Grounds stadium. This will probably end up being a very close game out there because the wraiths defense is something furious from hell but they give up a lot of yards to the run game (last in the league with 94 yards per game). So if the hawks rely less on Aaron Blocksdale's arm and more on Owen Talyor's legs they could end up winning the. Of they beat the wraiths this is why they beat them. I am going to say the hawks noticed this and edited there strats so ![]() ![]() Ultimus game ![]() ![]() Here the otters are back in the ultimus with a lot if pressure off their shoulders and I believe last time the hawks were here they choked harder than Albert Johnson a.k.a Prodigy. So we have two teams playing each other that lost on their last time here. The hawks will not be able to beat the otters by running... or even by passing so they got here but they will not be able to win it for baltimore. The MAP of the game will be disputed for ever but it will truly be Tegan Atwell, but Mike Boss will win it. ![]() ![]() Code: 356 words Sit-down with a fan: Bzerkap interviewed me Sit-down with a star: Interviewed @Bzerkap 1. Does your lack of stopping the run concern you that you give up the most yards per game in the league to the run? It does a little because Owen Taylor is no joke, and I know they like to run him a lot. So that part is scary, and the fact that it will lead to a potential time of possession battle that we don't want to find ourselves in. We are usually the ones to dominate that statistic. However, their bread and butter is still the pass game, so if we can be as good as we usually are there I think we'll be ok. 2a. If yes, Do you think the hawks will use this against you guys to get past you guys? I don't think they will use this against us really. The playoffs aren't really a time to get crazy with strategies. You need to stick to your tried and true, your bread and butter, your meat and potatoes. For the Hawks it's their air attack so I expect that to be in full swing. 3. What are you guys doing to make sure you do not repeat history and lose out right away. Work our asses off. Next to the Hawks we may actually be the unluckiest team in the league. We lost out on two previous Ultimus' and then lost with homefield advantage in the playoffs last season. That was a 13-1 team that just shit the bed. We aren't as good this season but we're working hard to avenge those previous losses and hope to break through and get one more shot. You don't get many in this league. 4. What is your teams greatest weakness? I would say our greatest weakness is honestly efficiency in the ground game. We have by far the most rush attempts in the league but our average is way down at the bottom. Third worst just above Yeti and Sabercats. It's not good. We need to be more efficient on the ground if we want to have a chance. 5. What is your teams greatest strength? Conversely, our biggest strength is actually our efficient air attack. We have by far the fewest passes in the league with 453, a full 108 attempts fewer than 7th place San Jose. However, our yards per attempt is highest in the league at 8.68, well ahead of second place Orange County at 8.08. This is also reflected in our receivers with only Johnny Rocket and Cesar Milan averaging less than 9 yards per catch. 6. Does a straw have one hole or two? A straw has zero holes. It's just a flat piece of plastic formed into a circle and connected with itself again. That Magic Momnet Man did Second Line have a magic moment out there in Santa Ann Stadium. The Otters offense, who were facing the reality of they are no longer a juggernaut, got the ball back with 7 minutes left on the clock. They walked down the field for 90 yards in 5 minutes and 23 seconds. Then Borkus took the field feeling nervous but know that he must score for second line, for the city, and most of all the fans. He walked out on to the field chewing his him and did a little prayer because he knew that the Otters defense was pretty pissed off at the point. On first down hey passed it two times that while drive. The first pass was for 6 yards the next was for another 6 yards. The rest if the yards came in the ground against the league's second best run defense who gave up only 91 rushing yards a game. Second Line was able to milk 37 yards and 2 minutes and 20 seconds off the clock before Peg Leg wad able to kick to 45ish yard field goal to seal NOLA's Ulitmus ticket. We have came to face the truth off OCO is no longer a juggernaut and will need to fight tooth and nail to win. Code: 216 Words (S8) - Ultimus Week - fusion247 - 06-25-2018 Playoff Predictions The DSFL is about to begin the playoffs of S8, and it's already obvious that this year's playoff match ups will be crazy. With both the Solar Bears and the SeaWolves failing to make the playoffs, it leaves us with only the real teams to face off in the conference match ups. In the Northern Conference we will be watching the Kansas City Coyotes and the Portland Pythons duke it out in a battle of offensive prowess as the Coyotes feed balls from Showbiz while the Pythons use everything they have on their running game in Elijah Lagerfield. I think that the Coyotes pass rush will overwhelm any chance of Portland using the air successfully, and that they will be able to shut down Lagerfield to take the win on home field. In the South, Tijuana travels to San Antonio to meet the Marshals on SA's home field, a a place that every team dreads. The Marshals are the complete dream team, stacked at offense and defense alike. The immense versatility of San Antonio's roster will prove too much for the Luchadores who will fall apart as Fitzpatrick picks their defense apart, and Brown takes the holes and drives them home. This leads us into the league finals, where the Coyotes will be traveling to San Antonio themselves. Once again, I think that based upon pure raw strength San Antonio will not be stopped, and will take home their third ever Ultimini championship. New Talent Rather than write about the biggest trade, I decided to write about the biggest pick up in general that has impacted their team and will continue to do so come playoff time. That player is Oskar Ludvig, who has been a crazy good cornerback for the Marshals all season long. Ludvig has been given the nickname "The Norwegian Demon" by his team mates in San Antonio, an affectionate term that describes his blistering speed that he has used to drive home four defensive touchdowns off of interceptions so far this season. Ludvig is an exceptional athlete who has been crucial to the success of the Marshals defense, and has worked tirelessly to keep the team in contention all season long. Ludvig is shaping up to be a top prospect in the upcoming draft, and it's mostly because he's crazy consistent. He doesn't have any bad games, and I think that is why he will be very successful come playoff time for San Antonio. You can rely on a guy like Ludvig to always make the right play, and to avoid taking big risks that could cost the Marshals the game if he over corrects. Ludvig is the perfect prototype of a playoff ready player. (S8) - Ultimus Week - PigSnout - 06-25-2018 New Talent: The Wraiths have made a few big trades in the last couple seasons in order to push for a championship, but the move to bring in Micah Hendrix may be the move that finally puts them over the edge. The Wraiths knew that they had a chance to contend for a championship this season, so they decided to stay aggressive and send a future second round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Micah Hendrix. On his own, Hendrix is one of the best linebackers in the league. But when you add him to a Wraiths defense that was already one of the best in the league, you get an absolutely lethal unit. Lining up Micah Hendrix and Boss Tweed together gives the Wraiths the best linebacker duo in the league. Being able to have two elite linebackers on the field at the same time who can stop the run, rush the passer, and defend passes makes it nearly impossible to attack this Wraiths defense as there is no real weakness in it. It is often said that defense wins championships and adding Micah Hendrix to the Wraiths gives them the type of defense that can carry them to a championship before even considering their offense. After this season, the trade for Hendrix may be looked back at as the move that won the Wraiths their first championship. Quote:227 Words Playoff Predictions: NSFC Championship: ![]() ![]() In the NSFC Championship game, the Yellowknife Wraiths will host the Baltimore Hawks. The Hawks squeaked into the playoffs with a 7-7 record but have the talent of a contender and have often looked better than their record. The Wraiths have looked strong all season with a league best 11-3 record and the best point differential in the league. The Wraiths swept the season series against the Hawks and will have home field advantage for this game. The Hawks will be able to put up a good fight, but I don't think they will be able to take down this Wraiths team on the road and the Wraiths will return to the Ultimus game. Prediction: ![]() ![]() ASFC Championship: ![]() ![]() In the ASFC Championship game, two very different teams are meeting as the Otters make their eight consecutive playoff appearance while the Second Line are appearing in the playoffs for the first time. The Second Line got off to a rough start this season but made some trades midseason and hit a hot streak that has given them the best record in the league over the last eight games. However, the Otters have been a strong team all season long and boast the second best point differential. These two teams have split their season series with the Second Line dominating the Otters in New Orleans and the Otters winning narrowly in Orange County. I think this will be a closely fought game but I think that home field advantage will be the deciding factor as the Otters win and book their fifth consecutive trip to the Ultimus game. Prediction: ![]() ![]() NSFL Championship: ![]() ![]() The Yellowknife Wraiths will host the championship game for the first time in franchise history as they take on a familiar foe in the Orange County Otters. Both teams have looked like true contenders all season long. The Wraiths have home field advantage on their side but the Otters swept the Wraiths this season, winning both match ups by double digits. It's a tough match up to call but I think the Wraiths will figure out the Otters this time as I'm going to bet on the team that looked stronger overall in the regular season and also has home field advantage. The Wraiths come away with their first ever Ultimus win. Prediction: ![]() ![]() Quote:425 Words That Magic Moment: One of the most magic moments of the playoffs came in the closing seconds of the New Orleans Second Line's victory over the Orange County Otters. The Second Line were on the brink of pulling off an upset to secure their first ever playoff victory. They had held onto a 17-10 lead for all of the fourth quarter, but then the Otters drove down and tied the game up with 2:37 remaining. Suddenly it looked like the Second Line's chances were slipping away as it looked like they would have to go to overtime. However, the Second Line weren't ready to give up and were determined not to head to overtime. They didn't have much time but were able to get a drive going. They made it to the 29 yard line but didn't have enough time to drive further. They had to put their hopes and dreams in the hands of Peg Leg, one of the lowest TPE players on their roster. With 10 seconds left, he attempted a 46 yard field goal to send the Second Line to their first ever championship appearance. He came through and nailed the field goal right down the middle to put the Second Line back on top without enough time for the Otters to answer back. Peg Leg delivered on the most important kick of his career, giving the Second Line a big magic moment to remember in their first ever playoff win. Quote:241 Words Root for the Underdog: I believe that the New Orleans Second line has a chance to upset the Orange County Otters in the ASFC Championship Game. On the surface, the odds are stacked against the Second Line. They are making their first ever playoff appearance and have to go against a team that has made the playoffs eight seasons in a row and has reached the Ultimus game four years in a row. The Otters finished with a better record and a better point differential than the Second Line and will have home field advantage. However, the Second Line have changed more than any other team over the course of the season. They started off 2-4 but have been the hottest team in the league since then. They have now won 7 of their last 8 games and have scored at least 30 points in 6 of their last 8 games. Their sole loss in that span was by just 1 point against the Otters in Orange County, showing that they can play the Otters close on the road and could be a capable of pulling off an upset there in the playoffs. While the Otters are still the favorites and most analysts will pick them to win, people should not sleep on this Second Line team which is a legitimate threat to win the Ultimus if their recent hot play continues. Quote:228 Words (S8) - Ultimus Week - ItsJustBarry - 06-25-2018 Robbed: You can easily make an argument for both the Philadelphia Liberty and Colorado Yeti. They were sitting and 2nd and 3rd in the conference respectively heading into week 13. Everything was in place and each team had control of their own destiny. All Colorado needed to do was win their remaining games and the playoff berth would have been theirs. What a story that would have been; from winless to playoff bound nearly overnight. As for the Liberty, they didn’t even need to win both of their remaining games. They could have suffered a loss and still made the playoffs as long as they outscored the Baltimore Hawks in those remaining weeks for the tie breaker. Unfortunately for Philly, Baltimore went on an offensive tear and they managed to score 87 points in the final 2 weeks winning both of their matchups and securing the playoff spot. This is the closest this conference has been, maybe in all of history, and we likely won’t see it this close again as the Liberty towards rebuilding. Looking towards the playoffs, Baltimore has the same daunting task that the Liberty faced last season in traveling to Yellowknife to play for a chance at the Ultimus. New Talent: There is no arguing that the Baltimore Hawks were in ‘win now’ mindset as they try to secure that sweet, Ultimus hardware before their top talent falls off the regression cliff very soon. I don’t think a single trade stands out but there is little dispute that Baltimore would be where they are without the addition of Arbin Asipi Jr. , Budda Browning, Vikain Marmeladov, and Clifford Rove. Budda Browning was exceptional as he stepped in and stepped up to replace John Wachter while amassing 915 yards and 5 TDs on the season. Vikain Marmeladov was equally impressive while racking up 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, and a defensive touchdown. Clifford Rove added 2 INTs of his own in a modest season performance. Although not a part of a trade, he was newly acquired for S8 and broke the Hawks dry spell of signing free agents, and that player is none other than Arbin Asipi Jr. Asipi Jr. has a career year as he flourished in this Hawks’ defense. His stat line screams Defensive Player of the Year. He dominated with 11 sacks, 11 more tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovered, and a safety to help Baltimore secure the playoff berth. Playoff Predictions: First, we’ll take a look at the ASFC matchup between the Orange County Otters and the New Orleans Second Line. Both teams have looked impressive this season and would argue that NOLA may actually be the better team. Had the Otters not scored the winning touchdown in the final minutes of their week 13 matchup to go ahead by 1 point, NOLA would actually be hosting this championship game. Instead, Westfield continued to do Westfield things as he secured the win and home field advantage. I am predicting that NOLA comes out slow at the beginning but icks up momentum as the game rolls along and they do just enough to pull off the win and lock up the team’s first ever Ultimus appearance. On the other side, we have the Baltimore Hawks headed up to face Yellowknife Wraiths. While their records would indicate that this is a lopsided matchup, I think these teams are more closely matched. The Wraiths average just 3 points more per game than Baltimore so I expect this game to be closely decided. The one aspect where I can give Yellowknife the nod would be with home field advantage. They had just a single loss at home this season and that was in week 12 once they had locked up their conference championship. Baltimore learned a lot about overcoming difficult situations and luck may still be on their side come Monday night so I will predict the Hawks stunning the Wraiths 31-27. Baltimore stomps NOLA in Ultimus. Hate the player or the game: The team that made the playoffs but shouldn’t have has the be the Baltimore Hawks. If anyone said that Baltimore would go 1-7 stretch through the middle of the season, nobody would have given them a chance. Lucky for them, they play in a conference with the basement dwelling Colorado Yeti and self imploding Philadelphia Liberty. Although Yeti are on their way up, finally, they still reside at the bottom of the standings but this should be their last season there for a while. Heading into week 13, Baltimore was at the bottom of the standing and needed everything to go their way to have even a chance at the playoffs. Believe it or not, both the Philadelphia Liberty and Colorado yeti’d hard as the Hawks were able to stumble into the postseason. Now Baltimore has its toughest game of the season Monday night when they head to Yellowknife for the conference championship. The Wraiths won both regular season matchups by margins of 4 and 5 so history tells us to expect a close game. The key to Baltimore winning this game will be to keep QB Mat Akselsen in the backfield and make him use his arm to win. As we’ve seen, when he gets moving, he is a force that is hard to match. (S8) - Ultimus Week - bovovovo - 06-25-2018 Root for the Underdog The New Orleans Second Line travel to Orange County to today to take on the Otters and I do believe that they have a good shot at winning the game if I do say so myself it will be a close one I am sure as NOLA and the Otters have matched up well against each other so far this season but the Otters have an intrinsic advantage as they were able to squeeze out home field advantage which given how dumb the sim is this is a ridiculous advantage to have but do not worry the NOLA NOLAers will turn it around this time their offense is dynamic and has been on fire during the second half of the season and their defense is no slouch though obviously Mike Boss is very good at what he does and it all depends on if NOLA is able to contain the Otters passing game and if the Otters can stop the NOLA offense once again and I don't think they will be able to I think that NOLA will win and go on to the Ultimus for the first time in franchise history yes I do believe this if I do say so myself. (203 words) New Talent There were a lot of trades involving the New Orleans Second Line that will have a huge impact but none as big as when NOLA acquired star corner back Benson Bayley. NOLA had one hole on their defense... their #2 corner back was just not up to par and opposing quarterbacks were able to take advantage of that mis match all season. Getting Bayley was a huge addition to the NOLA defense and should help immensely with slowing down the Otters terrific passing offense. Another trade that NOLA did this season was acquiring Paul DiMirio and King (I forget his first name) from the Liberty. King helps bolster a NOLA defensive line that was only okay and DiMirio provides Borkus Maximus III another target in the passing game to help spread the ball around and create mismatches. DiMirio can line up all over the place... at TE, slot, or out wide, giving NOLA the opportunity to play around and create potential mismatches on offense. This is a good thing a very good thing indeed yes sir yes it is I do believe so myself it is a good thing these trades were good yes they were and help NOLA yes. (200 words) Playoff predictions NOLA beats Otters. Yes you heard it here first the NOLA NOLAers are going to beat the Orange County Otters. This is a very close match up that I think statistically is pretty 50/50 which is really annoying if you are NOLA and you want to win but also annoying if you are the Otters and you want to win either way I think NOLA walks away with this one (please dear lord let NOLA win I beg you)' Hawks beats Wraiths because I'm feeling pretty spicy this year the Hawks have been outrageously unlucky this season finishing with a record much worse than their actual talent would dictate and they are able to surprise the Wraiths and the world except for people who believe in the Wraiths playoffs curse and are able to squeeze out the win here. NOLA beats Hawks in the Ultimus and I know what you are thinking you are thinking wow bovo you stupid idiot you are such a homer and guess what you are absolutely right I am a homer I am a big ol homer sandwich with cheese and I am drinking that purple kool aid. If the Wraiths beat the Hawks I think they win the Ultimus no matter who they play. (211 words) Playoff Series MVP The most valuable player during the play off series between the Orange County Otters and the New Orleans Second Line was the man the myth the legend Peg Leg. Peg Leg hit every extra point opportunity and every field goal attempt... and what more can you ask? Hitting the game winner? From 40 plus yards out? Oh snap well guess what bucko that's right he did that too. Peg Leg nailed the game winning kick from 40 plus yards out and to me that's enough for him to be the MVP of the game. What helps his case is that frankly the offense of NOLA sputtered a bit and the game was largely a defensive battle. Blackford Oakes had a case with his clutch interception but really I am going to have to go with my gut on this one and my gut is telling my Peg Leg. Peg Leg don't beg like an egg or greg or an egg named greg but he hegg the keg like Meg with his peg on the reg no lead or fled he get head on the reg like shreck and he shred that leg with his peg spread like peg leg or his name isn't Ted. (204 words) (S8) - Ultimus Week - caltroit_red_flames - 06-25-2018 [div align=\\\"center\\\"]THIS IS WHERE I WILL PUT MY WORDS[/div] (S8) - Ultimus Week - Moosecop - 06-25-2018 Playoff Predictions: SFC Matchup: The San Antonio Marshals take on the Tijuana Luchadores. Marshals come into play having won 7 straight including 2 of those being against Tijuana. The defenses of the 2 teams are very close in terms of turnovers and points allowed this season so it will have to be the offensive side of the ball that determines the winner. The undisputed best offense in the league outmatches the Luchadores' and continues to dominate at home sending San Antonio to another Ultimini appearance. NFC Matchup: The Kansas City Coyotes host the Portland Pythons. KC is also on a massive win streak and boasts a defense that gave up the least points of all DSFL teams as well as an offense that has really started to hit their stride late in the season. The Coyotes will defend their home turf, lead by Gus T.T. Showbiz, Kolby Deringer, and Declan Harp, and claim victory over the defending DSFL champs. Ultimini: Kansas City visits San Antonio for the final game of the season. The Marshals defense will prove too strong for the Coyote offense as the league leaders in sacks, tackles for loss, and defensive touchdowns spoil KC's dreams. The Marshals offense, led by Kevin Fitzpatrick, Marquise Brown, and Footballer Catcherman, just need to contain Kolby Deringer to put up big points as they've done all season. (224 words) Playoff Review: As you can see from the above, my DSFL predictions weren't quite as spot on as I had hoped. In the SFC matchup, we had the San Antonio Marshals hosting the Tijuana Luchadores. The game was in a stalemate all the way through with the defenses for both teams forcing punt after punt. The Marshals led 10-7 heading into the 4th quarter before tacking on another 3 points from a field goal by Emilio Ramero in the final 6 minutes of game time. The next drive the Luchadores finally got there offense going as they got good field position off the ensuing kickoff, and drove down the field where Sydney Spinelli ran in a 16 yard rush on 4th and 3 with 2 minutes left. In the NFC game, the Coyotes did their job defending their home turf against the visiting Portland Pythons. LaMarcus Strike had himself a day for Kansas City as he carried the ball 35 times for 127 yards to really hold the Time of Possession advantage for his team, in addition to catching 4 passes out of the backfield with 1 for a touchdown. The Coyotes went up by a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and never looked back as they won 24-13. (207 words) That Magic Moment: For those of you that didn't watch the Ultimini game between the Kansas City Coyotes and the Tijuana Luchadores, you missed an absolute epic title game. The Coyotes, playing at home, jumped on the Luchadores hard and fast early. They grabbed a 17-0 lead in the first half thanks to 2 redzone touchdown rushes by superstar LaMarcus Strike and were looking poised for a blowout, however, Tijuana came out of the halftime locker room with some new life. They would hold the Coyotes to only 3 more points the rest of the way while their platoon of quarterbacks, Sam Penner and Andreas Metaxas, would throw for a touchdown each. Tijuana clawed back to within 2 points with 5 minutes remaining thanks to a punt return by Sydney Spinelli and then held KC to a few more punts. The Luchadores got the ball back for a 2-minute drill where they drove from their own 27 to the KC 33 with around 40 seconds left and with no timeouts sent the field goal unit out. Kyle Corbett, who had been absolutely incredible all season, took his drop back quickly, lined it up, and drilled the 50 yarder to win it as time expired. The team went ballistic, lifting Corbett on their shoulders, the fans that made the treck up to Kansas City stormed the field and celebrated with their team as Ultimini champions of Season 8. I doubt Corbett pays for a meal in Tijuana for the rest of his life. (249 words) Playoff Recap Infographic: ![]() (S8) - Ultimus Week - Dawegg - 06-25-2018 Playoff Predictions Conference Finals NOLA @ OCO For the first time in New Orleans Second Line history, they have made the playoffs. However, they face stiff competition from a contender which has regularly found itself in the Ultimus a considerable number of times. New Orleans is still up and coming, and with late additions like Benson Bayley they pose a substantial and vastly underrated threat to Orange County. If the Otters find themselves behind early, this game could be easily taken by the Second Line. I think it has been proven due to some questionable loses the Otters have experienced this season that Orange County may be vulnerable, and I believe New Orleans manages to pull out a close win on the road. BAL @ YKW Baltimore has always been an above average team for the most part, but they have been stuck in the same division as the Liberty and Wraiths. I will venture to say that Baltimore, while a talented team, has struggled at points and lost a few games that they were easily expect to win. I think that barring a major upset, Yellowknife wins this game easily. Ultimus Championship NOLA @ YKW New Orleans may have been able to pull past a tough matchup in Orange County, but this is simply a poor time for them to make it to the championship game. They certainly have a chance, but Yellowknife simply has too much talent and they should win this game. Quote:Word Count: 240 Playoff Series MVP Eric Kennedy was the Ultimus MVP of the matchup between the New Orleans Second Line and the Yellowknife Wraiths. The game was not exceptionally high scoring, but when they points came, they made the difference between winning and losing. Neither team played to their offensive potential, and that really showed when the victors only managed to put up twenty four points. By the end of the second quarter, the game was still ideally within reach of the Second Line who were down by only four points with plenty of time left on the clock. A great return by Dermott Lavelle sets up a drive starting at the New Orleans fourty nine yard line, allowing a few quick passes by Akelsen to move the ball upfield into scoring position. However, the true shining moment of the MVP came when he caught a pass and punched in six points for the Wraiths from thirty six yards out. This gave the Wraiths a lead of eleven points against an underdog New Orleans team that could not afford to play this game from behind. The Second Line were unable to recover from this blow, and effectively secured the first Ultimus win for the Yellowknife Wraiths. On the day, Kennedy wasn't too shabby posting five catches for 116 yards, but his main contribution was his game clinching touchdown that put the game almost out of a realistic comeback scenario. Quote:Word Count: 234 Sit Down With a Fan Questions asked by run_CMC: 1) What was draft night like last season? Did you know where you’d be going? 2) Your rookie season didn’t go well at all, statistically, but you’ve done better than the rookie QBs of the past. So how do you feel about this past season overall? 3) What team team tries to trash talk but is the worst at it, and why is it the Colorado Yeti? 4) What’s your favorite thing to do on your days off from training during the season? 1. Draft night for me had a combination of both uncertainty and a weird feeling of "knowing" who I was going to end up playing for. The rumors that Arizona was going to take me were kind of intriguing, especially given that their franchse has a much more clear history than the SaberCats. However, San Jose had made it clear that they were going to select me with their first pick and at that point I had more or less accepted that Arizona was not in a position to reasonably trade up to select me at second overall. 2. It may sound like a cliche, but this season was tough. It's one thing to say that you're okay with losing and moving along in a rebuild and then actually dealing with losing almost every single game. The experience wasn't all bad since I go to meet people like Jackson, Weston, Brill, and Horne. I'm just thankful that the offseason has arrived and we have a chance to recollect ourselves. 3. The Yeti talk trash, but I wouldn't call it that. I have some opinions on them, but unfortunately I don't feel like my opinions are all too important to make known. 4. Driving in the Arizona desert and listening to Merle Haggard. Quote:Word Count: 212 Sit Down With a Star Questions asked by White_Cornerback: 1. Cornerbacks don't get very much praise in the league and tend to be an overlooked position by many. In what underrated way do you feel that you contributed to the team and allowed the Wraiths to win their first ever Ultimus? 2. Did you see any Second Line players as rivals on the field against a New Orleans team that has quite a number of outspoken players? 3. Yellowknife has a history of playoff demons striking at the worst possible moments. Were players performing superstitious rituals to "exorcise" their past to win in the playoffs? 4. Is there any chance that we see Lavelle join the opposition and play for New Orleans alongside respected league veteran Benson Bayley? 1. Well firstly looking at the game alone, if you look at the timing of my interception (6:20) or so in the 3rd quarter, Yellowknife was up 21-10 at the moment and NOLA really were marching, a score for them makes it a 1 possession game and possibly if they go for two, just a field goal separating us. Instead of that after snagging the interception we really took the wind out of their sails and our chances of securing our first ultimus rose significantly. If you think we're underrated and don't get enough praise then that's fine, but don't tell me cornerbacks and the secondary as a whole didn't win us this game. 2. I prefer to focus on the game at hand and what I need to execute as opposed to somebody on the opposition team blowing smoke. 3. I mean we're the fuckin wraiths! I don't know how much more superstitious you can get! But seriously we've had a bad run of things, 0-2 in the ultimus including last years desperate defeat to Philly who would then go on to be champions and there were alot of nervous heads in that locker room. But at the same time we have alot of experienced heads in there and really at the end of the day that's what mattered. 4 Lavelle will not be leaving the Yellowknife Wraiths at this time. The game is tied at 17. The Otters had just completed an 80-yard drive that took over four minutes off the clock, including a backbreaking 39-yard completion to the New Orleans 3-yard line where a gassed Second Line defense surrendered the tying touchdown. Maximus took to the huddle knowing they had to run off as much clock before scoring again – and score they must. Across from him, looming over his offensive line, Greg Glegane was menacing. He’d already whipped the line three times for a sack on Maximus today. The Second Line needed to play it safe and play for the win. A quick pass to Law, and a run by Nuck got a quick first down. Only 36 more yards to go before they were in range for a Leg field goal. Two more timeouts and the Second Line was at the Otter 42 with 1:10 left in the game. It was a 59-yard field goal from here. Leg’s long on the season was only 53, the longest kick in the league was 56. They had to get closer. With Glegane desperate for a clock-killing, game-extending sack, Maximus handed off twice to Nuck, who picked up 4 yards then dashed for 9, down to the Otter 29. No timeouts left, the clock was was running. With 10 seconds left in the game, Leg’s 46-yarder sailed thru. The Second Line was going to the Ultimus. Root for the Underdog: The Second Line can win the championship. The Wraiths were down 21-7 at halftime to the 7-7 Baltimore Hawks in the Conference Championships. Before the Hawks defensive line gave way and allowed four 2nd half sacks and Blocksdale blew two third quarter drives in a row with an incomplete pass into the end zone and then a drive-ending interception that led to a quick touchdown. The third was a disaster for the Hawks, and the fourth quarter was no better. The Hawks turned it over on downs on fourth and inches, and then failed to land a coffin corner kick when they punted strategically in Wraiths territory. The Hawks’ self-immolation in the second half opened the door open for the Wraiths, who completed 40% of their passes and had their running attack shut down, averaging less than three yards a carry, forcing Wraiths punter Forfeit into action nine times. The Hawks also committed 5 penalties for 32 yards to the Wraith’s 1 flag for 3 yards. The Second Line showed grit and determination, as well as a stellar passing attack that racked up 362 yards led by Smallwood and Evans, who combined for 14 catches for over 200 yards. The Second Line allowed 5 sacks – three to Clegane – and two were laid at the feat of runningback Nuck. The Otters defense, led by Clegane and stellar rookie Brown, could not stop the Second Line’s game-clinching drive. And neither will the Wraiths. Matchup Nightmares: What matchup to watch in the S8 Ultimus? Wraiths WR Kennedy is among the best and fastest players in the league but struggled in his matchup against Hawks CB Delacour. The Wraiths offense completed only 40% of their passes for 272 yards, and of Kennedy’s 86 yards, 31 and 30 yards came on two late-game catches. After a first quarter drop by Kennedy that helped lead to a punt, the Wraiths tried to get Kennedy going desperately. At one point in the 2nd quarter, Akelson tried three times to force-feed Kennedy the football. The result? A breakup, and incompletion, and a seven yard gain. Punt. Victory for Delacour. Akelson struggled so much that the Offensive Player of the Game was the opposing quarterback. Akelson would connect to Kennedy on a 30-yard touchdown and later in the fourth a 31-yard catch to set up a touchdown by RB Rainey. And the Wraiths won, but not on the strength of their passing attack. The Second Line has such a player the likes of Delacour. CB Bayley can match Kennedy on speed, toughness, strength, and agility. Bayley should make Kennedy’s day a long one, and create chances for the Second Line defense to put pressure on Akelson. #4 here |
