RE: (S24) - PT 5 - Trade Ya - Air Crou - 09-13-2020

Packs. What is all the fuss with Dotts really? It's a way to scam rich people out of their money and make contracts more valuable. But here is the thing. And that is the topic I want to touch on. Let's assume a user has $200m in their bank account. Dotts packs cost $500k per pack, and with the outrageous daily limit of ONE, the weekly cost is $3.5m. Over the course of a season, which lasts around 6 weeks, that is $21m. Around 10% of the user's bank account. However, you cannot get to those large amounts of money unless you vomit words in the media section or you get a league job. Which means that the monetary loss is not as huge as it seems initially. Meaning the rich remain rich. One can write articles and make money back. Pack Opening Review by AirCrou anyone? So the solution to this is very simple. Increase the pack limit. 10 per week, 3 per day, I don't know. You are trying to combat overcirculation, but there are still duplicates, the site isn't working on Chrome, and it's impossible to pull All-Pro and Legend tier cards, let alone special cards. The Season is almost over, and I still haven't pulled an Ultimus winner card. Increase the odds of high rarity cards. Limited Edition, but it is impossible to pull them. Also, there are so many cards, the one per day limit is ridiculous. it doesn't take money out of the economy, and you can't pull your player if you were a high earner. Anyway, the system is still new, and the future is bright.

Make Dotts work on Google Chrome. Chrome is honestly one of the most popular browsers out there and the sheer fact that you can't use the Dotts portal on Chrome is a bit ridiculous. If you could use the Google Chrome browser you would have an already successful thing be even more successful. I know I've heard this complaint a few times, so maybe it's something they should take into consideration. Another thing I would add the the Dotts is the ability to see other players collections and to be able to trade with other users. I really want one card, but it is rare, so the likelihood that I get it in Dotts seems a bit small. So, like if I want to get a Tidwell card, but don't wanna buy endless packs, but I have a cool other card, it would be awesome to put that on the site somewhere and anyone interested in it could trade me. This would also make people more happy with opening packs. Though I guess I could see this might potentially de-emphasize the spending of money on packs. The bigger issue is going to be once cards go out of circulation. Then you could get locked out of a special card. Maybe also giving players their own players cards would be a nice touch?

I think one of the features I would like to see most in Dotts is for trading to be a implemented. I imagine that it is something that has been highly discussed and is all difficult to find an effective way to do correctly. Still, I would love to be able to swap cards and be able to hunt them down that way. I would like for it to not be money based, but rather cards for cards. It feels like there could be a sort of "trade block" sort of deal where players can see what might be up for grabs. Sometimes people have valuable cards but they don't have a deep connection with it. On the other hand, that could mean the world to someone else. Another feature I would like to see is a better way of recording duplicate cards. I received two of the same card, albeit the most basic tier but now I'm out of a card already to start. It's not a huge deal right now, but down the road I could see it really adding up. It would also suck to get a duplicate of a really valuable card and being out on that. Having a couple of the same valuable card would further allow successful usage of card trading.

As somebody who is interested in doing graphics work for the league as well as somebody who is currently employed as a developer, the release of Dotts was very exciting for me. It was truly awesome to see the result of hundreds if not thousands of total hours of work be combined into this product. Even just thinking about the total time that it took to make draft graphics for the last 24 seasons, it is easy to see just how much time and effort an undertaking like this takes. That being said, I am looking forward to watching the project grow and  improve based on the learnings that the Dotts team find from the community as well as from experiments or tests that they make themselves.

As for additions, I’ll focus more on things on the development side. I think that a couple key micro animations could be added to the development site to truly make the card opening experience really stand out as an exciting moment. Microinteractions are defined as "contained product moments that revolve around a single use case”, in this case that would be opening a card back and viewing your opened cards. I think that there is a great opportunity to borrow from the feeling of opening a card pack in real life that we could borrow from from a development perspective. Giving a user the ability to actually swipe or gesture to rip the top of the card pack off, revealing a loose stack of cards waiting to be looked through ( and maybe even teasing a rare card border at the end. Considering the order of the cards viewed to build up anticipation towards a big reveal of your best pull. Allowing a user to shuffle through their cards to make them feel more individual. Small things like that I think would really take the card opening experience to the next level.

As a Dotts’ employee, I’d like to offer a slightly different perspective from most on this PT. First off, I want to say that even though I was never really all that into trading cards growing up, the amount of work put into this by the Dotts’ team has been incredible. I’m sure many of the responses to this point task point out the lack of trading as a negative, or a suggestion to implement in the future. I want to say that I agree with that sentiment, and that as a team it’s something we would like as well though. We wanted to take baby steps though, and decided to launch so people could collect cards while other secondary functions, such as trading, were still being designed. That being said, I do have a couple ideas for special cards or series in mind. First off is the highly sought after Gimmy card. Currently, players who were already retired had to spend two seasons called up to the ISFL (then NSFL) to get a card. Since Gimmy played his entire career without being called up, he doesn’t have a card. I personally would not be opposed to adding a single Gimmy card to the pool as the ultimate legendary card. Given that the current card pool has about 700 cards in it, this would give Gimmy about a .1% chance of being pulled, a probability which I think suits the DSFL legend.

RE: (S24) - PT 5 - Trade Ya - timeconsumer - 09-13-2020

Interesting topic for a PT. I haven't really seen too much of the dotts series so far since I don't really buy the cards so it's hard to say. I think maybe an interesting piece would be to do a "behind the curtain" series or something to that effect. Maybe some of the better known users (GMs, HOs, highly active people) etc we could have a picture of them on the card. So there could be a "timeconsumer" card with a picture of me and a stupid useless fact about me. Or we could do that with someone's dog. That would be a kind of funny thing. You could even take it a step further and include all of that user's accomplishments on their card so how many characters, how many Ultimus wins, how many different awards their whole career, maybe what jobs they held and all that sorta deal. You obviously would need users willing to put a picture of their own face into it but I think it could be a super interesting and personal touch to the league. Another cool idea might be to do a card for a famous play. Maybe a game winning last second touchdown in the playoffs or an iconic fail like the Hail macky.

I don't think that removing money from the economy will fix the problem with players taking such cheap contracts. A ton of users would rather save their team money so that they can be better and have enough for other players. If you take money from users, with things like Dotts, the casino, and other ways, then users will generally just write more media so they can continue to afford equipment and trainings and max earn. These new things like casino should be more focused on being fun while not flooding the economy with cash. For instance Bingo used to be a fun way to make a few bucks and check off some boxes, until they realized they were losing too much money and overnerfed it instead of lowering the stakes or limiting cards more per user. As fun as events like 1.5x media are, that and the grading scale are both probably too generous if you really want to make people take more money in contracts. Personally I think the league is in a fine place, and we shouldn't be trying to get users to produce more media which there is already way too much of. I think you could look at raising the minimum contract but then you'll run into a problem of having to raise the cap which doesn't seem worth it to me.
