(S13) - Ultimus Week - BWIII - 03-05-2019 2) SPOTLIGHT ON THE YOUTH - Can be completed anytime Marc Spector is the S10 or newer player for the Orange County Otters that I think made the biggest impact on the game. When you don't really show up in the stat sheet as a cornerback like Spector did only getting 3 tackles, either you're getting burned and the safeties are cleaning up or you're doing your job. In this game, Spector was doing his job as James Bishop, another pretty good young player, was shut down only getting 2 receptions and 21 receiving yards. Not only was Spector helping shut down McCormick and the Yeti's passing attack, but he also hauled in an interception, another important factor for cornerbacks. Usually in the NSFL you see young players struggle against a great passing attack as a cornerback, but I think for Spector having two safeties like Danny Grithead and Jonathan Broxton playing behind him basically lets him go out there and play a little more freely as he knows that if a mistake is made one of those two players got his back. Spector having a great Ultimas though was kind of a bit of a surprise to some as looking back on his season he only had 2 interceptions and 2 passes defensed, meaning that in the Ultimas he had half of his regular season production. 3) PRE-GAME or...POST-GAME - Can be completed before or after based on choice. So I have to admit that the Ultimas was a bit more of an exciting game than I thought it was going to be, but in the end I was correct as the Colorado Yeti fell on the road to the Orange County Otters. The game actually started out pretty boring, depending on how you viewed it, as neither team seemed like they really wanted to be there, only swapping a single field goal through the first 21 minutes of the game. Eventually though the Otters would find their footing and start to pull away as Showbiz, Crush, and Adams put on a show and Orange County would go up 17-6. As soon as you thought that The Otters had it in the bag though McCormick would lead a charge down the field and Howard Miller would catch a touchdown to bring it back within four points. The two offenses then would go back to struggling, punting the ball back and forth, until Ser Zephyrous punched one in from 2 yards out. As the game finally looked to be decided, the Yeti would manage an offensive drive marred by penalties and Howard Miller would catch a second touchdown with only 1:10 left. Instead of trying for an onside kick to possibly tie or win the game, the Yeti kicked it away and lost in a LOL fashion. 4) QUARTERBACK MATCHUP - Can be completed anytime The quarterback matchup in the ASFC Championship game was quite an interesting one from the outset as it featured the NSFL's best volume passer in Gus T.T. Showbiz against the NSFL's most efficient passer in Joliet L. Christ. Not only that, but it also features the only two quarterbacks in the NSFL who are known with their middle initials. For me personally I felt like Showbiz had the advantage in this one mostly because it seemed like Christ relied a lot of Jerrod Canton to have a good game for the play action to work and in turn aide in Christ's game. In the game vs the Otters though Canton was seemingly shut down and in turn Christ had to become a volume passer, which exposes him a bit and is what I feel ultimately led to him not having a great game and quite possibly is the reason for the loss. On the other side of the field though Showbiz's game isn't predicated on Orange County's run game and so when Ricky Adams got shut down, Showbiz didn't really care because having to turn up the volume of passes played right into his strengths and allowed him to lead his team to the best of his abilities. Affiliate PT SHL PT (S13) - Ultimus Week - Rabidsponge21 - 03-05-2019 SHL PT 1) IT IS OUR TIME THIS (NEXT) YEAR - Can be completed anytime Well I am not 100% sure myself if the Hawks will look like ultimus champs as soon as next season, but I feel they are on the rise again. Sure this season wasn't something the team should be proud of, but the ending wasn't the worst and showed signs of promise. The team shed a lot of key veteran pieces but has been growing non stop this season. A team that is like a chili, it will need to wait for all the pieces to blend together, cook, stew and allow all the flavours to come out. The Defense is the Beans, adding the hearty fibre to the team, and pushing all the bad things out. The Offense, the meat, it's full of good proteins and drives the team forward with its nutrients and piles up the points for the wins. The Hawks just need to sit and remain patient really and let the pieces all come together with time and patience. It will be interesting to see who decides to step in with the GM stepping down and take this team from what is turning into a Buffalo Bills level of championship game success and moving it towards patriots levels instead. (202 words) 5) ENEMIES HAPPEN - Can be completed anytime. (S12) - Thorian Skarsgard - DT - MrStennett - OCO Who does this 'defensive' tackle think he is? Jealous? You think I am Jealous of some clown who was clearly named after the god of thunder in an attempt to sound cool? I for one know from inside sources he legally changed his name on his 18th Birthday for that very reason. His original first name? Baandaid Yes. Baandaid SKARsgard. I don't know if his parents really love their Seven Deadly Sins anime or have a really cruel sense of humour, but he made a point to 'remedy' that by naming himself after Chris Hemsworth. I mean the dudes a looker (no homo) but it's the equivalent of owning a Ford 350 with a lift kit and pipes on the back. Maybe he didnt want to feel left out of the ridiculous naming we are seeing more and more now a days, as we moved away from the old timey sounding names like Reginald and Gretchkin to things like HAHA, Freedom, Saturn, SocialJustice and whatever else the kids are naming their poor children now a days to wave around their opinions, thus dooming the kids. But lets focus here people. The guys a joke, and the only thing he's going to get in the Ultimus bowl is a bowl full of his own tears as he sobs about what COULD have been. Be the difference maker you goomba, not the victim. 10?) Ask a Player on another team 4 questions - Asked Ckroyal92 1) What do you feel is one MAJOR hurdle for the SJS to finally break through in the playoffs? One major hurdle? Really the only hurdle for us at this point is just getting past those pesky Otters. I firmly believe we have the deepest, most balanced team in the league right now & arguably one of the best teams that's ever been assembled. We even had home field advantage this time & still came up short, so what do we need to do to break through? Your guess is as good as mine because I'm simply dumbfounded. 2) What will be your off season plans for the team? Stand pat, or drip in FA? Trades? For the most part, we're going to stick with what we've already got because as I've said before, I really think we have a group capable of great things. We might dip into free agency a little bit for some minor upgrades or explore some trade options if offers come our way, but we're not actively looking to break up the core that we've already put together. 3) Are you happy with the progress being made by SJS? Very much so. All but maybe 1 or 2 guys remain active & committed to our cause, and I can't thank them enough for that. They've all put in a ton or work to make this team one that should be feared for seasons to come & I think we've just scratched the surface of what this team can accomplish as we separate ourselves from the rest of the league. 4) Whats one major thing you'd love to change about the league? For me, the biggest thing that needs fixing in the league is the salary cap. With the way the cap is currently configured & OL bots being the major investment they are, a full line of the best bots on the market cost almost half of what we're allowed to spend, barring any trades for extra cap space. Now to be fair, most of the real contenders won't buy that last tier of bots in favor of slightly less expensive ones that are still effective, but even at that, the only way to build a competitive team is if everyone agrees to take a minimum contract, maybe even less if you lock someone up early. As a GM, I hate asking guys to take minimum contracts. It makes me feel cheap & I feel like I'm robbing them of the full league experience because not everyone has the time to put into pumping out media pieces. What I'd like to see changed, and has actually been proposed in the past, is either a slight bump in cap space or a normalization of OL bots. What I mean by that is that everyone would get the same level of bots & we wouldn't have to pay for them. Now obviously, we're not expecting to have that much cap space freed up, so the cap would have to be reduced some, but something like $60M isn't unreasonable. Right now, buying a full line of 550 bots costs $22.5M, leaving us with $52.5M to spend on actual user-controlled players. Normalizing bots & dropping the cap to $60M would give us just enough flexibility to not be bound to giving everyone minimum contracts. We're not asking for a lot here, just a little help. kinda ranted on the last one lol (S13) - Ultimus Week - speculadora - 03-05-2019 SHL PT IT IS OUR TIME THIS (NEXT) YEAR - Can be completed anytime Written: Write 200 words on your team and either why they should be looked at as Ultimus champions this season, or if your team has been eliminated, next year, or the year after for those non-believers. Well, here we are, set to play the S13 Ultimus Championship, and the Otters would appear to be the presumptive favorites. Many people had all but written them off after San Jose tore through the league en route to a 12-2 regular season. Yet the Otters seemed to save their best performances for last, handing the Sabercats a crushing 31-21 upset in the ASFC Championship game. The Otters are now set to face off against the Colorado Yeti in Orange County, where the Otters posted a 7-0 record during the regular season and defeated the Yeti in week one. This Yeti team looks a bit different from the team that got off to a rough start to the season however, so the Otters have to be sure to not take them lightly. Still, Orange County look well positioned to win their 2nd straight championship and their 5th championship overall. Those who've paid attention shouldn't be too surprised, in the end. Orange County did lose Angus Winchester from their S12 Ultimus team while replacing him with Thorian Skarsgard, but otherwise kept their roster in tact. And, although some of those players are ever aging, the Otters were in prime position to end up here from the outset of Season 13. The real question will be whether or not they can maintain their success from here on. SPOTLIGHT ON THE YOUTH - Can be completed anytime Written: Write 200 words on one of the players in this year's Ultimus Week that are Season 10 or newer and spotlight on how they can affect this year's Ultimus. (Or have affected) Thorian Skarsgard has stepped directly into the rather massive shoes left behind by Orange County Otters legend Angus Winchester. Although he had a modest season in terms of individual production, Skarsgard has been the driving force between a solid Otters front seven and will play a pivotal role in any success Orange County have in these playoffs. Skarsgard has shown versatility, playing at both defensive end and defensive tackle, and the Otters will likely need him to perform at both. His run stuffing abilities will be particularly relevant against the likes of San Jose while his pass rushing will be sorely needed against a quarterback like Micycle McCormick of Colorado. In the first round of the playoffs, Skarsgard put up an excellent performance, registering both a sack and a tackle for loss en route to an upset of San Jose. He played a very important role in the Otters' shutdown of San Jose's high powered rushing attack, holding Jerrod Canton to just 3.3 yards per carry. Skarsgard will now set his sights on pile-driving Colorado players into the turf as the Otters look to repeat as Ultimus champs. If Skarsgard can perform as well as he did in the first round of the playoffs, OCO should feel confident in the performance of their first year player. With the Ultimus tonight, it seems like a fitting time to preview the main event between the dynastic Orange County Otters and the upstart Colorado Yeti. The Otters, after beating regular season titans the San Jose Sabercats, are playing as the defending champions of the S12 Ultimus. Pre-S10 success had been the norm for the Otters, until the reawakening of the New Orleans kept them from the best date in sim football - at least until last season. Led by Showbiz at QB and Adams as the most versatile weapon in the game, the Otters boast the regular season's top yardage offense and top passing offense. Will it be enough to beat the Colorado Yeti, who are searching for the franchise's first Ultimus win? With only four playoff appearances, total, to their name this team could cement its legacy for Denver football fans. Can McCormick keep the Yeti offense on the field and leverage the breadth of offensive weapons that showcased during the regular season for the second best offense in the NSFL? With a high scoring game in the cards, the real question is which team's defense will steal the show? Can one of the defensive players step into the spotlight and steal the game? Colorado has several big names at the top of defensive leader boards, but middled in overall defensive production. Whereas the Otters, with less big individual performers in key categories like sacks and interceptions, had stronger overall defensive production. Regardless, tonight shapes up to be a good sim football match. Quote:That Magic Moment: Pick one moment from a playoff game and describe what made it so amazing to watch. (Must be completed after the game you write about) Going a little off script and I'm picking a player and a quarter that was surreal and magical. Andre Bly Jr. in the 4th quarter can take significant responsibility for how the game turned out. Down 23-14, Colorado had the ball after Seer had just put the otters up by 9 points. A fantastic kick forced McCormick and company to start on their own 11. It quickly became 3rd and 6, on their own 15. Down by 9 points, but lots of time left on the clock with 8:07 remaining. McCormick snaps the ball, scans the field and throws for Bishop who looks to have space. In the blink of an eye, Bly Jr. is on him and swats the ball away. To make the moment even more special, Andre Bly Jr. is a well known former Yeti who was drafted to the team in S5 and had been a leader before leaving for the Otters after waiving his no movement clause. Then, to drive the dagger deeper into the Yeti, Bly Jr. took the Colorado kickoff with 1:10 left in the game and provided a great 39 return to seal the victory. What a quarter by the veteran corner. On paper, going into this game, Havran had to be the clear favorite to come out on top statistically. Rose Jenkins had failed to impress up to this point, and there was no reason to believe that wouldn't continue through this matchup. One stat that immediately jumped out to me after this game reached its conclusion was Jenkins' QB rating of 81.4, very surprising if you consider Rose's overall QB rating through the season of 66.3. Havran was forced to throw in this game, and throw is exactly what he did, ending the game with 52 pass attempts! Although, the defense sent the pressure, causing Havran to only complete 30 of those passes for 316 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Jenkins had a much easier game, with the rushing attack relieving a lot of pressure from the passing game. Rose Jenkins ended the matchup with 17 comp./37 Att. for 204 yards, 2 TD's, and 0 INT. Although the Coyotes weren't able to come away with the win, this matchup is a great example of why stats going into a game don't mean everything. Any player could step-up at any point in a season and surprise everyone. (S13) - Ultimus Week - ErMurazor - 03-06-2019 SHL NSFL 1. The San Jose Sabercats should have a pretty easy case as to why they are going to be favorites for the Ultimus next season following the incredible show they put on in the regular season despite their saddening playoff loss. However, the San Jose Sabercats came into this season as a team with a very young core that has continued to put forth effort and shown they are actively improving at an impressive rate. On that same not the San Jose Sabercats are not only a young team, it does not appear that any of the core players on the roster will be going anywhere, whether it be via free agency or regression. As if that was not enough of a reason to believe in this San Jose Sabercats team it is important to realize that a lot of these plays have still not even hit the primes of their career so they should continue to see the same dramatic improvements they have seen over the course of last season. I have also heard some rumblings that the San Jose Sabercats may bring on some additional consultants to assist the coaching staff on a weekly basis and those rumors could be game changers for the team. Finally, while the San Jose Sabercats are still improving many teams around the league are going to suffer from aging stars and retirements due to the number of veterans on their rosters, furthering the San Jose Sabercats chances of having even more success next season. 3. The ASFC Conference Championship game was a game between two very different franchises. The Orange County Otters have been to the big game many times before and their success is well known throughout the league. On the other side of the field were the underdog San Jose Sabercats who had a great regular season but have proven to be ineffective at getting things done in the post season throughout the franchises history. This was a game that really pitted the old guard against the new guard and the game was hard fought on both sides. San Jose Sabercats really tried to stick to what got them this far by controlling the clock with a sound running game and hoping their elite defense could make enough plays and stops to get the team the win. Christ was not asked to do much and barely broke into double digit numbers by the time the game came to a close. The Orange County Otters continued to utilize some of their strengths which over the years have included quirky formations with running backs out wide and wide receivers going deep as well as any other curve balls they could cook up on the whiteboards prior to the game. In the end the Orange County Otters were able to take the lead and put the nail in the coffin just after the two minute mark in the 4th by getting a late field goal and making the game a two possession one. In a great match-up that was not reciprocated in the NSFC after a blow out, age and experience was able to beat out youth this season and the Orange County Otters are moving forward to the playoffs. 5. A wise old sage once coined the term, “Failadelphia” and I believe that phrase has never been more true than it is today. Philadelphia is a vile city that should be purged from the history books. My personal distaste for the city is not directed at any individual but everything about the place, whether it be the unruly attitudes and classlessness to the gross foods and greased up poles and mail boxes around town. The most famous museum landmark in the garbage pile of a city is a fictional boxer from a movie that speaks like he has had far too many strokes. The fact that Philadelphia fails to emphasize the potential museum attractions the city has to offer and instead focuses on B-list (I am feeling generous) acting speaks to the city’s core. The Philadelphia Liberty epitomize everything the liquid-cheese loving city of Philadelphia is at its core: trash. The same of the Liberty organization can be seen in the turnover of leadership, who after seasons of failure have finally packed it up to leave the factory of disappointment. What kind of front office tries to build their franchise around a kicker? Has anybody ever heard the phrase, this is a kicker’s league? The most famous and arguably best player currently on the roster was nicknames “Put it on the ground Brown.” This is not a compliment to his ability but more a testament to the fact that the Liberty’s franchise player has literally thrown away multiple games over the course of his career. The Liberty did not make the playoffs, they simply did not miss them. This is not an example of their ability but a clear indicator of how terrible their conference is. Failadelphia is often mocked for their Taco Bell log, but at this point they should embrace it because a bunch of minimum wage high schoolers would probably make a more competitive football team. I would tag the Philly GMs, but I don't know who they are and I don't really care to find out. I'll always remember my days in Philly fondly, and appreciate how the front office took a chance on the kid from Pahokee. That being said, I want to win. I didn't see myself winning in Liberty colors in the near future, which is why I decided to opt out and test free agency. I'm getting older, and I want to be able to get a ring before I end up croaking, and Baltimore is the place where I'm going to get one. Do you think players that test free agency help or hurt their career reputation? - I think players should have plenty of freedom as to where they want to play. It's a business, and if I want to work somewhere else, I should be able to. This shouldn't hurt anybody's career reputation. With joining the Baltimore Hawks, a team known for their historically great Runningbacks, do you think you are hiding under someone's shadow, or are you trying to outshine those that came before you? - Neither. I'm trying to continue a legacy here in Baltimore. I'm my own person, I don't care who came before me, during me, or after me. I'm gonna keep doing my thing. Look, Taylor was a legendary runningback. Me and him had our beef on the field but he's nothing but class. I want my number next to his in that wing of honor though, and continue the legacy of greatness here in Baltimore. What is one difference that you have seen in joining the Hawks that either wasn't present or you did not see enough of with the liberty? - Well I think the overall team is much different. We have a legit squad, and I've never been more confident in saying that. Everywhere you look, you see talent on the field. From the offensive side to the defensive side. What is more important for you to see in the upcoming season: an ultimus win, or a career high in stats? - Ultimus win, easily. It's all about the big game at the end. My stats don't matter if I'm not winning. @sapp2013 (S13) - Ultimus Week - Renrut - 03-06-2019 1) IT IS OUR TIME THIS (NEXT) YEAR: It is of my utmost belief that the Baltimore Hawks will indeed return to the promise land this time next season. No one is denying that this was probably going to be a down year for the Hawks, I do not think anyone(outside of the Philly scum) thought that it would be THIS bad. Well, it was bad, but to make matters worse, they decided they were sick of it and decided to go win a couple games down the stretch and lost out on key draft positioning. All in all though, the Hawks still have a solid haul for the coming draft, and drafts to come, and return a very solid core for next season. It is not out of the realm of possibility that they can get a key free agent and not only return to the Ultimus, but win it next season. With Brown set to hit free agency from Philly, if he decides to sign elsewhere it really does open the conference back up and would be a fun battle to secure that top seed. Even if he does come back, it will still be fun and I look forward to the challenge! We have improved throughout a bad season so there is only one way out from here....up and to the top of this league once more. PBE ![]() ![]() (S13) - Ultimus Week - plantane - 03-06-2019 2) SPOTLIGHT ON THE YOUTH - Can be completed anytime Written: Write 200 words on one of the players in this year's Ultimus Week that are Season 10 or newer and spotlight on how they can affect this year's Ultimus. (Or have affected) Stephen Harris Jr. had a huge impact on this year's Ultimini game. With 3 extra points made and 3 field goals in the game, he accounted for 12 of the Luchadores' 30 points, including the game-winning field goal in overtime. The only argument necessary for how crucial Harris Jr. was is to just look at the kicker on the other team. Crisco missed one field goal attempt this game and his team ended up losing by 3 in overtime. Had Crisco made that attempt, the Coyotes would be walking away with the W and the league championship. No front office can stress the importance of a kicker enough when it comes to this sport. Poor kicking play leads to points left on the field that shouldn't be. In addition to scoring field goals, Harris Jr. did a fine job on the punting front as well. He only punted for one touchback throughout the entire game. In addition, the only ball that was able to be returned ended up being returned for a loss by Anoa'i. The Coyotes special teams unit wasn't able to get anything going with Harris Jr. out there. Lastly, while two of Harris Jr.'s kickoffs did land in the end zone, the special teams was desperate enough to take them out to avoid the touchback. Having no kickoffs end in touchbacks throughout the entire game is quite impressive for a rookie kicker and it'll be exciting to see him hone his kicking ability even further while in the league. While kicker isn't the flashiest role on the field, Harris Jr. should've solidified his place as a vital part of the Luchadores for the near future. 3) PRE-GAME or...POST-GAME - Can be completed before or after based on choice. Written: Write a 200-word preview or review on one of the Conference Championship Games or Ultimus Games. The Ultimini game was...ugly. 13 penalties for 133 yards between both teams. While it's clear both teams needed better discipline, one takeaway is that the penalties did end up offsetting a bit (68 yards against the Luchadores vs 65 yards against the Coyotes). There were a few crucial moments where penalties shifted the game in an unforgivable way. After the Luchadores gave the Coyotes defense a beautiful 1st and 23 with a penalty on the first play, the Coyotes decided to give them those yards right back with a penalty for unnecessary roughness. Really? That brought the Luchadores offense right back to 1st and 10 and led them through their first scoring drive of the game. In addition, the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Verden at the end of the third quarter gave the Luchadores a fresh set of downs that the Coyotes couldn't afford to deal with. And that drive ended up in a field goal, costing the Coyotes even more points off of their own mistakes. One other notable accomplishment (?) is that there was only one turnover throughout the entire game even though both teams fumbled the ball. The rookie Poole has the sole takeaway in the game, which led to a Coyotes touchdown. Neither secondary proved deceptive enough to trick the quarterbacks into making fatal mistakes. 4) QUARTERBACK MATCHUP - Can be completed anytime Written: Write 200 words on one of the QB matchups in this year's playoffs. What are you most excited to see (Or excited to have seen), who will play better (Or who played better), etc. This game contained a contest between two rookie quarterbacks Havran and Jenkins. Honestly, it's hard to argue that Havran played even close to as well as Jenkins. Jenkins played the game of his career, with two touchdowns and no interceptions just to fall short of the league championship for his team. Havran made one crucial mistake in the third quarter, which led to an interception-caused touchdown drive for the Coyotes. If it wasn't for the difference in kicker play between the teams, we might've seen a different outcome from the Ultimini. Havran did have a higher completion percentage than Jenkins, but that could be explained by the average yardage per pass for each quarterback. Jenkins took more chances and, therefore, had fewer incompletions. If I were the Luchadores coming out of this game, I'd strongly consider looking at the quarterbacks in the new draft class. Don't ignore the fact that Havran did attempt 52 passes in this game, which is no small feat for a rookie quarterback. That shows endurance and grit even if he did complete just over half of them. Jenkins also had two big rushing attempts for 17 yards, showing that in the right system, he might be a versatile mobile quarterback threat. Havran lost 3 yards on his two attempts, so that doesn't seem to suit his style quite as well. That Magic Moment: Pick one moment from a playoff game and describe what made it so amazing to watch. (Must be completed after the game you write about) The magic moment is a very easy pick this year. Obviously, the game-winning field goal kick in overtime by a rookie kicker is the stuff of legends. Harris Jr. probably spent his whole life dreaming of an opportunity like this and we all got to witness it together. The game was on the line and his whole team was counting on him. All of his training up to and through college had prepared him for this moment. He had everything to lose, but also everything to gain. And across the sideline, he had witnessed the shame of a rookie missing a field goal in the big game. Would he end up like Crisco did? Or would he finish his first Ultimini with a perfect record and the game-winning play? 35 yards doesn't seem that difficult for a DSFL kicker, but it must've felt like miles to Harris Jr. in that moment. We've all seen our perfect playoff moments shattered by a whiffed kick or mistimed snap, but today will not be added to that infamous collection. Harris Jr. made the field goal and made his mark in DSFL history with the final 3 points for the Luchadores. He will live on in Luchadores' fans' hearts as the man who won Ultimini 2027. |
