(S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - CalvinP - 03-25-2019

Draft night was the biggest reality check in my career. Regardless of all previous accolades I wasn't up to the standards I thought I was at. Now was I the number one pick? I could understand the idea of people saying no. GMs need to fill positions of need first. But to have seven safeties go before me, hilarious. And don't get me wrong, I was happy for everyone drafted, but you can understand sitting in a room with a bunch of talent and watching sixty...... SIXTY people celebrate before you. Then you realize.... The league doesn't even consider you in the top 50% of new talent. You're no one special, you won't be getting a starting position, you're here to fill a hole and not be an integral piece to the team..... and I walk up, shake the GM's hand, thank him for giving me the opportunity and go straight to work. No time to celebrate. I'll hate it now but everyone who passed on me will regret it later. My family looked at me and saw the fire in my eyes. Honestly I'm grateful for what has happened. After setting a legendary mark in college you've given me a reason to do it all over again. It's a fitting path considering my upbringing. I'll make sure all eyes are on me this time around.

I was sure that I was going to get drafted. Heck, I was even sure as to who would pick me. The Palm Beach Solar Bears were the only ones to show real interest in me, mentioning something about a power running game that I'd thrive in. I just didn't know where.

I had kind of a down senior season at Northwestern State, which didn't have the greatest players facing them, so of course wasn't expecting to go in the first few rounds, so I was prepared to play the long game and wait patiently for my name to be called. Second round rolls around and the GMs have to pick their own guys... and the Solar Bears GM just so happens to have the best tight end in the class. That's a bit of a gut punch, but hey that just means me and him can be an effective 1-2 punch at the position, like Gronk and Hernandez but with less murder. No problem, I'm still their guy.

Round 7, and we're at about the earliest I thought that I'd go, and the Solar Bears do go tight end. Michael Roos, TE, Minnesota. What is going on? Did I blow the combine? Were they just gonna move on without me? No one else even made a glance at me, was I about to go undrafted?! It took another 45 minutes for my name to come off the board, but it felt like a lifetime. Each pick felt like a personal betrayal. But finally...

15th round, 86th pick. Dan Wright, TE, Northwestern State. To the Solar Bears

The madlads took three tight ends in a single draft. They were true to their word and saved me from having to be a walk-on again. At least I didn't have to wonder what my number was gonna be. If it was available, I'm taking 86 as a constant reminder of this. I may've gone late, but I sure as hell won't play like it.

I went into draft day pretty dang confident about where and when I would be going off the board. I knew for a fact that the Palm Beach Solar Bears were interested in loading up on tight ends. I also knew and still know that I am one of the best damn prospects out there so I was expecting to go pretty early. The Solar Bears first pick comes up and they select linebacker Rock Hardshaft. Okay, I could see why they would go that direction. Not only is he one of the stronger linebackers in the class, he is also devilishly handsome so there’s not a whole lot I can personally do to complete that. The end of the first round rolls around and I can’t say that I’m not disappointed because I truly viewed myself as a first round talent. Anyway, the Solar Bears second pick comes up and it’s… TIGHT END CHASE JENSEN FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY! Oh man, was I stoked to get picked. The GMs called me after I got off the stage and told me that they were super excited to have me and that I was going to play an integral part in their offensive scheme. All-in-all, draft day was a ton of fun and I can’t wait until next season to do it all again to see where I end up in the NSFL.

Lamont McKinnie had a draft day party at his family’s house with his friends, Arizona teammates, and family members. He sat nervously, waiting for his name to be called. The people around him were joking around and talking but he was sitting quietly. Heading into the 6th round, he was starting to get antsy, but at 8:49 PM his phone rang with a number he didn’t recognize. He shushed everyone and answered the call.
“Hello this is Chet Tannen, I’m one of the GMs of the Palm Beach Solar Bears, we think you’ll be a great fit in our scheme, we’re seeing about trading up and grabbing you at 35, so sit tight for now and we’ll get you in a couple picks” Lamont could barely speak he was so excited but he managed to answer the man with, “That would be amazing, thank you so much for this opportunity” Tannen hung up and McKinnie put the phone down. The room exploded with celebration. His mom hugged him, crying, his teammates were congratulating him, and he had a big smile on his face. After the festivities, he sat outside with his girlfriend for a while just taking it all in. He says it was the best night of his life.

Going into the draft, I really had no idea what to expect. I decided to not attend the draft in person, and to just have my closest friends and family over to watch the draft unfold. Only a couple of teams expressed interest in me pre-draft. One of those teams was the Palm Beach Solar Bears. I did some scouting of the other receivers in my class, and knew I belonged near the top. I didn't know where receivers typically went in the DSFL, or which team would decide to pull the trigger on me. After the first few rounds went by without my name being called, I started to settle in for what could be a long evening. Thankfully, the people I had with me were supportive, and kept the atmosphere pretty chill.

When I heard my name called, and saw my draft card up on the screen, I was ecstatic. My dream of playing professional football was going to be realized. Palm Beach was the team I wanted to play for, and they had decided to take me as their first receiver off the board. The Co-GMs called and let me know how they were looking forward to me being on the team, and it seemed like they had a great core of guys to compete with. Due to my responsibilities in NM, I have been spending a little of my time away from Palm Beach. The GMs have been extremely flexible and understanding. As the regular season kicks off tomorrow, I'm ready to show on the field how hard I've worked this offseason, and I can't wait to see our team come together.

DSFL Draft Day - man, was that an experience. I declared later than many of my peers, and I felt being late to the party meant I'd be a later pick in the draft. Beforehand I'd talked to a couple of GM's that were interested in taking me, but I had no idea how soon. Maybe 10th or 12th round? I knew I was good enough to go sooner, I just wasn't sold that teams would be eager to take me. Then, right before pick 45, my phone rang. On the other end, the GM of the Portland Pythons let me know that they'd be picking me with their 8th round pick. I was excited! My family and I all celebrated together as we watched them call my name on the TV. I had no idea I'd go at that point in the draft, and hearing the kind words from the commentators had me overflowing with joy. Of all the teams I could have gone to, I'm very happy to be going to Portland where we believe we'll be competing for a title. To be a part of this great draft class is an honor, and something that I will never forget.

For Emondov Emoji this actually was his draft and so the feelings and excitement are still very fresh for him. Despite being one of the top prospects in this draft he decided to turn down an invitation to be live at the draft, one that he hopes his current and future fans can understand. Knowing that he was going to go high, he decided to stay home and have a party with his family and friends and just spend some good quality time with them before the grind of the DSFL and NSFL begins. Also, Emoji knows that there will be a ton of these types of opportunities to be thrust in front of fans for cheers and recognition as he'll have plenty of hardware in his trophy case when it's all said and done. So on draft day he was watching the draft for sure, but instead was in the comforts of his own home eating some good home cooked food and just enjoying it. Emoji did play a little in the DSFL last season for the Portland Pythons, but he still figured he'd be a top pick in the daft because as he stated "ain't no one better than me!". Despite that though he was chosen by the Pythons again 3rd overall, which he wasn't too upset about as this'll allow his family to watch and attend more of his games.
