(S2) - Weekend PT #1 - Draft Prep - Anti-Hype - 07-14-2017

Tyler Varga and I are approaching the draft like its a haystack and we're looking for the needle. As far as options go we don't have many as of right now. We chose to build our team with veteran players in lieu of a team full of fresh faces. With that being said we will certainly be using the draft in order to fill some holes that are left over. We're messaging prospects whenever we can to ensure no diamonds in the rough go unnoticed. I believe with the amount of depth in this draft we are going to be able to find that guy. When we get him he's going to have a lot to prove from being looked over round after round after round and we hope he can bring that tenacity to the field.

As far as position goes we aren't focusing on that SO much as we are dedication, drive and activeness. We went the aggressive route in order to instill a winning culture early here in Las Vegas. So far everything is falling into place but as most of you may know..The draft is one of the most chaotic times of the off season and you can be assured we'll be feeling the pressure.

For the players of the NSFL the regular season and the playoffs are where you make a name for yourself, where you get to show off all their skills and the time and effort it takes to be able to make a roster in the league. For us GMs its the draft that where we get to show off our skills. Its a place were proven GMs can increase the the gap between their strong team and the rest of the league. Or it can be the place where a desperate GM can find a spark to his team that can turn his situation around, from being on the hot seat to being a legend. Knowing this its a incredibly stressful time in the war room. Everyone thinks they have found the answer to your teams problems, the owner likes the swagger a Qb carries, the head coach believes he can turn around a troubled, yet talented Rb, while a scout wants to take a chance on a player nobody has heard of from a no name school. Even after all the dust settles and the name is finally called we won't even know who was right all along until a few years down the road. Bust, injury, Star, Hall of famer, all possible for each and every player, but only fate knows what will happen. So on draft day when you get to look in on the calm demeanor on everyone's face in the draft room, just that with every name called its will the biggest gamble each person in that room will make in their life.

in war room it is crazy times. We got the music blasting all day and all night. It keeps interns moving fast and for little money. I stay on all night calling all the other gm and putting prospect on whiteboard. How many time I have to change people from top and bottom because we got new intel. 1 time, 2 time,. 10 time. It never ending process to get draft ready and can always use more time. My best friend in these days is energy drink, monster, rock star and five hour energy is love, is life. Other gms is weak. I call at 3 am and they sleep. I sleep when im the champion. Other gms spend time for families. Families is weak. I start my way to championship win on draft day. As a play I was first 1 in and last 1 out. As a gm I am first 1 in and never out. My office is my home and I will destroy my enemies from it. I will know the schedule of my prospects bowels when the draft comes. I know there fears and there dreams. I know everything. i don’t need to talk to other gms I know there drafts already. I am ready for draft but wont stop. I will get more ready. I will start my winning on this day.

As the night of the draft begins, general managers everywhere are stressing. Phones are ringing, pagers are buzzing, trades are being agreed to. Every team is doing there best to acquire the most talent possible through the season 2 draft. Well, almost every team. While the Philadelphia Liberty began a normal rebuild, the Las Vegas Leigion took their own path. The Legion immidiately entered "win-now" mode, trading away most of their draft picks in order to acquire established players. This has, however, allowed them to have a stress-free draft night. They don't need to worry about making the right first round pick. If they're 6th round pick does nothing, no one would be suprised as a 6th round pick isn't expected to do much. They don't have to worry about blockbuster trades, as the value of a 6th round pick in this draft is low enough that no teams care about trading for it. As the night drags on, gm's can simply take a quick nap throughout the first five rounds, since they're mostly irrelevant. They can simply use their board they created in the past week and pick using best player available, or most active player available, in hopes of a late round sleeper who becomes extremely active.

Every one knows it is a very very hard thing to prepare for the national simulation football league draft. It requires putting in hours of work, scouting and contacting all the potential recruits you would want to eventually draft. The best way to prepare is start with your top 10 prospects, rank them and scout them as it develops. Them once you've spent a good time just on the best possible players on your team you move onto your next ten and so on and so forth. There is not a single player you should leave unscouted or uncontacted as there can be a sleeper literally any where in the draft in any round or at any pick. Never value one position over another if there is an elite talent you take him no matter what and figure the rest out later. That way you don't start drafting way less talented players over extremely talented ones just because of team needs which will eventually kill a team. Though most gms have this approach from what I know so there really is no need to repeat myself. The draft is definitely going to be hyped up and fun but also chaotic no matter how you prepare for it exactly

Days after the Expansion draft the GM’s of Philadelphia have gotten together again to discuss the next draft that's around the corner. Philadelphia's first ever draft will be a memorable one as they are one of two teams to be an expansion team this year. If you have been in the war room around draft time, you know the preparation and non stop focus that it causes. Raw data on top of tons of game film from hundreds of players that the scouts have filed for GM’s. With GM’s, coaches, scouts, owner and president of the team in one room asking if certain player is a good fit for this team. Hours and even days become antagonizing as the GM’s plan on who to take at what round, and create a list of players just in case if one they like gets taken they can chose another one. “Since we are an expansion draft we’ll be looking for the best players in the draft not just players to solidify our depth. We don't have that type of luxury. We need a winning product out there, this year.” Philadelphia has 14 picks in this draft, with many of the picks coming from trades they acquired from protecting certain players in the expansion draft.

As a general manager, the few weeks between playoffs and the draft are the most stressful. Even worse, this season we were distracted by the loss of four players to the expansion draft, further muddying our draft boards. In order to have a successful draft, teamwork along with long days are needed. For our team, we've distributed our workload among some leaders of the team. Our defensive back captain focused on finding the best db prospects while our o line captain worked on finding out who could best protect our quarterback. This strategy has worked well, allowing us to personally contact most of the prospects in the draft and interview them. This strategy has not only bonded our team together, but made prospects think we're a nice, outgoing team. The workload on our managers has also been reduced significantly, however that doesn't mean that it's calm within the organization. Even after being interviewed by captains, potential prospects need to talk to GM's. GM's also are the ones who create the draft board, and at the same time deal with potential trades regarding draft position. Everything will pay off draft night, however, when a future star is chosen to bring the team to an Ultimus cup.

There are so many things that goes through the mind when it comes to drafting new prospects.

One of the first things that comes to mind is figuring out and solidifying the future direction for the franchise. Is the team looking to rebuild the landscape or are you capitalizing on a already playoff/championship caliber squad?

Another thing that stick out is if you'll be bringing in a balanced drafting strategy? Maybe one side is weaker than the other and the draft will be use more to strengthen your offense or defense? Perhaps the secondary is lacking or you're looking for playmakers to make a difference on the offense?

The draft board will help get an up to par draft list of players that can make your team a contender for years. Another question that has to be asked is whether or not it is the right time to draft the best player available or sticking to your guns and picking the player that can immediately step in and fill in a need.

Will the players that you draft fit your proposed offensive/defensive scheme? Can they contribute in special teams, return kicks/punts? Can they make plays on prevent special team touchdowns? It all depends on what exactly you want. By the landscape of things, all of the players entering the S2 Draft can contribute in some way, shape, or form. That last thing to see is if they can translate their previous success or use their failures back in college to propel themselves to be an elite prospect in the NSFL?

It's something we all will be keeping an eye on. S1 set the bar so high but there will be so many chances for the young blood to make their mark.
