When Bork Björnsson landed in Yellowknife, nothing could have prepared him for the frozen wastes that now surrounded him. Actually, that’s not true, as Bork was born and raised Iceland. Bork breathed in the crisp arctic air and felt at home.

At training camp, Bork and the other Wraiths rookies worked as hard as anybody else in the league, and the coaches were impressed. Smallwood impressed in the wide receiver drills, and there is talk of him serving as the WR3 at some point during the season. Cushing, the outspoken media darling, stood out at the linebacker position and in his leadership. Bork impressed the coaches with his dominance at the defensive tackle position, his speed and agility propelling his 360-pound frame around the field at blazing speeds. To no one’s surprise, standout cornerback Dermot Lavelle stole the show at training camp, finishing the first day with four interceptions during the 7 on 7s.

The Wraiths emphasized improving their defense with the S2 rookie draft, and the defensive rookies dominated most of the drills throughout training camp. The coaches (and the Canadian media) were impressed, and hopes are high in Yellowknife that the new rookie class will help bolster their defense to the same levels as their elite offense.

First day of practice in Otter Country was a fairly simple affair. Newly anointed fat ass Angus Winchester tried to pull his typical season one antics, jumping over on to Gregor's special eight foot tall locker (built to accommodate his incredible size) over attempting to startle to rest of the dressing offensive line.
Things were different in season two, because evidently angus has gain a bit of bad weight over the offseason, and could not completely make it over the bulkhead. Instead, angus slams headlong into the crown as if it was a sub 200lb lady he was chasing back in his home country of Tennessee. He bowls, head first, over the top of the locker right into poor, newly resigned Boyd's jockstrap collection, which he keeps as a substitute against paying for a smelling salts supplies everytime his poor gray matter gets slammed against his skull going head to head against shaka in minicamps.
This little circus act is so funny, Angus laughs so hard he runs out of breath (he is not known for his stamina) and has to visit the medical tent as a precaution for the rest of the first practice. Luckily, Gregor assumes Angus's role as the left tackle on the offensive line and the practice moves smoothly afterwards.

The Otters locker room was buzzing when the rookies entered in for the first time. The staff showed them to their lockers, showed them where the weight room was and where the leisure room was. Most colleges don't have a lesiure room, in fact many professional locker rooms do not either. However the Otters feel that mental health is equally as important as physical. All work and no play can drive a man to the brink.

Their lockers were separated by position. All the offensive lineman were on one block, which in itself was adjacent to the running backs and quarterbacks. The wide receivers were with the tight ends. On defense, Linebackers were in one unit, lineman another and the defensive backs all shared one. The punter and kicker's lockers were, for whatever reason, with the defensive backs as well.

Before anyone hit the weight room or practice field, the coach came out and have a speech about the importance of teamwork. You know, standard pep talk fare. But even though all the players knew what he was gonna say, and had heard it before in various iterations, it somehow still motivated them.

But, being a locker room full of testosterone fuelled guys, plenty of antics occurred. Several hazing rituals, which are more closely related to a fraternity initiation ceremony than silly pies filled with shaving cream to the face or lockers filled with phallic objects. Hazing is a tradition in many locker rooms, in some instances of it's taken too far it can cause a divide, however the Otters rituals, as strange as they are, only strengthen the bonds between rookies and veterans. I wish I could go into more detail but there's sort of a mum's the word deal about it.

One of the best things about the Otters locker room is they have a on facility masseuse 3 days a week, which after a rigorous practice, feels amazing. There's plenty of protein bars, hydrating drinks and healthy snacks in one corner of the locker room. A small room off to the side houses ice baths and hyperbaric chambers for rehabilitation and muscle stimulation.

Being a rookie in a facility that had these kind of amenities gives one the sense that the organization cares about their athletes. That they matter, their well being matters and they're valued. It's easy for a rookie to feel on the outside looking in when they enter a locker room will people who've worked side by side for a while, with established friendships. But there's a sense of understanding that the veterans have that even though you're new to the team, you're just as important as any one of them. Bonds with them are quickly established, and I sincerely feel that's why the Otters are one of the best franchise in the NSFL.

Day one of practice was like any other first practice after the offseason. A lot of sprints. Half the guys had put on 20 pounds in the offseason and were visibly slowly for it. But Coach won't have any of that, so if you don't make weight your whole unit runs extra sprints. Luckily for some units, their guys all came in from the offseason as lean as they were during the regular season. So with Verns and Petrakis looking like Ninja Warrior competitors the defensive back rookie class was lucky enough to get right to practice and skip the extra sprints.

But unfortunately for rookie offensive lineman Finkenlarkin, his whole unit came in overweight, particularly Angus Winchester who has put on another 20 pounds. So while Finkenlarkin is still a hefty 340lbs, he was still in better shape than most and could have done without the extra set of sprints. So while other guys are getting their reps in at practice the linebackers, offensive linemen, tight ends, and RBs are spending all their time going up and down the sideline. Will the rookies miss out on valuable practice reps because of this, and cause the Otters next season to suffer? Only time will tell.

In season 1 the outlaws offensive line started out not the best. I think there was to plays that could be said of as good. In the season they got lots of free agent guys and the line was ok but still not best. This season we have a different start. We still have some player that are not the most focused on practice. But we have a new rookie scott timlin who is working harder then ever now that he is a outlaw for life. Before the season 2 rookie practice scott timlin was a guy that did help team and did thing but after his contract he is posting in locker room more and doing money making job activities. He will be a big value for the outlaws at center for long time. We also have a guy who is me named tim pest. I am work hard to do all task and then be one of best lineman in league. Season 1 I missed all practice and camps and I had a slow start to being good. My sack numbers was poop and I let me team down many times but this time I am going to do my best to not let sacks and my dream goal is to do half sacks of last season with all extra training. The outlaw need me and scotty timlin to be our best and it show in practice. We have new guys called guy worthy, busters brownce and connor macmanus we need to come to practice be #1 line in league.

One of our rookies, 1st round selection Tim Pest was with us last season as a late FA signing, but we never got to haze him correctly. Our first practice this season was known as the hazing of Tim Pest. We started by putting Icy-Hot in his jock strap and he was forced to wear it on his bare skin, definitely a hilarious reaction all practice as poor Tim found it a real pest, pun intended. We also shaved his head and shave his eye brows off, he's truly scary now, we posted pics of him on our team instagram, they already have over 1M likes. I do not think Tim Pest liked it though. Then once on the field we made him carry all the water jugs and had our QB's hurl football at his while he did it, he definitely got pretty bruised up, he was even hit in the nuts once on a rifle shot by King Bronko, uncalled for but hilarious. After that abuse we made him stick his finger in the belly button of all the other lineman after they ran sprints and were real sweaty, he had to smell his finger each time, he passed out twice from that horror. Poor Tim Pest really paid his dues this practice, after it was over he was doing an interview with NSFL magazine and we pied him right in the face. He took it like a champ, because well... he is a champ. Wink

Yellowknife, NWT. We've all heard the stories about the unforgiving weather and what these players have to put up with. Anybody who was here last year has adapted and more than likely gained about 14 pounds to help pad themselves in the brutal cold. Unless you had the luxury of playing in Yellowknife last year like a certain #1 draft pick, you knew exactly what to expect. Luke Chunk didn't. Chunk who is a linebacker out of Louisiana , born in Houston Texas showed up for the first day of mandatory training camps. Luke Chunk who had only heard of Canada by name, had never visited here but he assumed it wouldn't be America's answer to the Artic. Chunk managed to get frostbite, thankfully it was only first degree frostbite. Chunk was told that in order to prevent damage to his newly damaged index finger (left hand) he would have to wear a glove the rest of the season (similar to Giant's Defensive End Jason Pierre Paul) or risk amputation. Chunk who is a natural joker, has taken this setback in his stride. He can often be seen chasing various players around the locker room with his glove, which recently has been vandalized and a crudely written "MR SOCKO" message appears on the top.

New City. New Players. New Team.

New, new, new. That's the thing with expansion teams, everything is brand new you have to build everything from the ground up and you have to create a entirely new atmosphere and being one of the few veterans brought on the team by management I took it upon myself to introduce myself to every member of the team.

With the introductions dealt with I could tell we had a good bunch of lads in and that the GM's had brought in some real quality individuals.

The assistant GM of the team Fox North is kind of old school in the way he likes to run a practise and decided the best way for us all to get properly acquainted would be a team wide tackling drill. Everyone's name would be put in a hat, and names would be drawn out to decide who would be the attacker and who would be the defender. We stood round North who was holding this battered old blue beany hat with a bright yellow bobble as he took names out. "Defender Drew Davidson Defensive End" and he reached in and pulled out another name and did a double take then smirked, "Attacker Stephen Harris Kicker". A roar of laughter went round the group.

I stood on the line and faced the massive DE as the rest of the guys lined up either side. Planning in my head to go back to rugby routes and maybe trick him with a side step and as I'm pretty nippy for a kicker maybe my pace would deceive him. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me down the middle of the channel and tried to juke left then right to go past him. This did not work and out of nowhere something that felt like a car smashed me off my feet.

I hopped up to my feet as fast I could and shook his hand "Good hit mate." and wandered back to the sidelines as sympathetic pats on the helmet and shoulder pads were handed out as the next victims prepared themselves and I pretended that my rib cage hadn't just been crushed thinking to myself that I must have pissed him off in some way when I introduced myself.

I actually feel kind of sorry for anyone who lines up against Davidson now I've been there myself.
