Well, well, well time to beat a dead horse I reckon. In the wake of the S26 ISFL season I was strongly considering going inactive. I'd managed the square root of absolutely nothing in the ISFL, I was getting pretty much zero stats and the team was at a dead end. I essentially had a player option I could execute and, if I did, it would place me in Free Agency. I imagined there's probably not many teams out there looking for an average earning Linebacker but it turned out not to be the case. A number of teams reached out to myself to attempt to recruit me to themselves which was pretty cool to see the depth of requirement the league had along with the teams willing to bring me onboard. Along with that it was a breath of fresh air to change team, locker room and everything that comes along with it. A change in culture, scenery and team was so helpful in reinvigorating my interest in the league and I went on to win Breakout Player of the Year. If that doesn't happen then right now I've probably either retired or recreated with the hope of at least having a functioning running back. Although given how bad they are in the new sim that may have been pretty regrettable.

i actually have a really good one for this, and I've had a few conversations with people about the whole "what if" situation that arose from this and how things might have worked out if this certain thing hadn't happened. I'm talking about the decision that was made while I was co-GM of the Arizona Outlaws, by the head GM of the time, who decided to trade down in the S22 draft rather than taking Brandon Booker with the third overall pick. I knew Booker from Myrtle Beach LR and was convinced he was going to be a stud in the league, and the rest of the war room was in agreement he was our guy. However, a trade was made that allowed Philly to slide up and take him instead. The reason behind my curiosity around the what if is the knock on effect that adding Booker to the LR could have add; maybe it means Heath Evans and Bruce Buckley don't leave in FA to go and play somewhere else because of the friendship they have with Booker. Maybe if the Outlaws don't get set back in that way they're able to get over the hump and win an Ultimus by now. It's definitely an interesting one to think about, and one that I'd like to write about in some more depth at some point down the line

Hands down the biggest "what if" moment for me during my relatively short time in this league is: "what if I never applied for the Philadelphia Liberty General Manager job?" For those of you not familiar with the backstory here, I originally wasn't going to apply for the job for the reason that I assumed I had no shot in hell of getting it and that the league would want to hire someone with some more name recognition or some experience with league jobs. Heck, I remember when I was being scouted for both the DSFL and ISFL drafts that I had told scouts that I really didn't anticipate ever going for a league job as a way to make money (I had a respectable $50 million in the bank when I was drafted so money has never been tough for me).

If it wasn't for my good friend @ShnarlyDude telling me to apply for the job on a whim, I definitely wouldn't be in Philadelphia. Most likely I would have played out my contract in Arizona and then go look to test free agency along with Shnarly just to see what teams would give players like us in free agency.

In this dark timeline, Philadelphia is still in a prolonged rebuild (like we currently are) but I have a strong belief that the locker room culture and the overall attitude towards the team in the eyes of the league is still fairly looked down upon. Thankfully, HO made a horribly misguided choice and let me take the reins!

The valor tenure was controversial in the history in the Chicago Butchers, in this what if scenario, we’re going to reverse a few picks to see how this affects the league. In this alternate timeline, Rayne Gordon gets selected by Chicago instead of Sweet James-Jones, who ends up in Yellowknife, so he ends up crashing and burning in Yellowknife. In S20, the butchers tank to get first overall, however, the Trade for Thorian Skarsgard never happens, so Prince Vegeta ends up in Chicago, and Osiris Firestorm-Fjord ends up in Orange County, also in S20, the butchers end up with Jamie Nikah as well. Baby Yoda still ends up in Chicago, however many seasons earlier, this is also lenient to when Ryan Leaf Jr eventually retires, which will still be before the S22 season. Because of that, the bizarre trade that was Farley Hank never happens so Wesley Erickson and Matt Cross both end up becoming members of Chicago, the trade for George O’Donnell still happens, setting the team up for S23. The first overall pick is never traded to Colorado, and Greedly Sly becomes a Butcher, and since Valor is still GM, Videl-San is used with the second round pick, but then Chicago trades up in S24 to select Maverick Bowie and Asher Montain.

If Bender was taken at any place other than 17th overall by the Otters, the trajectory of his career would be completely different. One of the main reasons he was picked at this spot was his willingness to change positions from TE to LB, which was a need of OCO. This also led to his immediate call up to the big league. So the first major change if Bender was drafted either a pick earlier or later is that he would still be playing TE. As much as I enjoyed the position, I realized that it is not a glorious one. I have come to enjoy watching Bender play as a LB much more. Could it be because he has now has a starting role? Probably has something to do with it. But it is great to see him go out and smash QBs. Especially Negs. That would be quite possibly the biggest thing I would miss if Bender never became a linebacker. Giving Negs the hit stick has been the highlight of my season so far. He didn't feed Bender the ball enough when they played together in Minnesota. And now Bender will make him pay for it for seasons to come.

I’m going to write a personal “What If?”  Jed Podolak came into the league as a RB DSFL waiver at the end of S18.  He stayed on with the Luchadores for S19 and wracked up 1544 yards – good for 2nd most in the league, and scored 11 TD – enough to tie for 2nd in that category as well.

Podolak excitedly headed off to New Orleans for the S20 season, but the Second Line did not need him at RB.  Jed moved to WR and did ok as a ro0kie with 325 years and New Orleans WR2 or 3.  The next year was a banner year, however, in New Orleans.  Jed moved up to WR1 and he more than doubled his yards receiving to 782 with 5 TDs. But more importantly, S21 would see the Second Line defeat the Wraiths 33-13 to win the Ultimus!  Jed had won the ultimate prize in only his second season in the ISFL.  Guess that switch to WR was worth it.

But expansion came in S22 and the Ultimus winning Second Line was loaded.  They could not protect everyone and so off Jed went to the Honolulu Hahaluas as their second pick in the expansion draft.

What if he had not?  What if he had stayed in New Orleans?

The truth is that it is quite likely that Jed’s career would have ended shortly after that Ultimus.  I had a lot of things going on IRL and my interest in the league had waned.  But going to Honolulu and the challenge of an expansion team trying to fight for relevance was just the spark to keep Jed in the game.  And he and I have been here in Honolulu ever since – the past 6 ½ seasons.

But all good things must come to an end.  Regression has battered Jed and though he is still catching balls for TDs, his receiving totals are way down.  He knows the truth.  It’s time to hang up the cleats.  At the end of this season, Jed will retire a Hahalua.  The team he has played for their entire existence and the one he has called home for all but 2 of his ISFL seasons.

Thank you management, teammates, and fans of Honolulu!

This week I'm looking at you, NOLA. In the S24 draft a young prospect named Adam Schell came into the league. He was relatively unknown, but you had a significant advantage. He was a Tijuana Luchadore (#LuchaForLife). One of the primary needs that season for NOLA was to add some young depth to the linebacker position, preferable ones who would be big time earners for many seasons to come. You had a front row seat to who I was: mithrandir who recruited me to the league was both a GM in Tijuana and a member of NOLA. Multiple other NOLA team members were hanging out in that locker room: Ben Slothlisberger, Ugarth the Dissector, Literally Just a Hexagon, many decision makers and big names in the NOLA universe. So, when NOLA traded up to the 5th pick of round 2, I thought I was about to hear my name called. Then, to my surprise, NOLA announced the pick of Busch Light - LB. I ended up going the next pick to Arizona, who traded me without playing a snap for them to Berlin, where I've happily been part of a ground up build of a kick ass organization. But I've got to wonder, and I think NOLA has to wonder too, what if they'd picked me instead of Busch? For one, I'm not gonna lie it'd have been really cool to play with mithrandir on the field. He's been my GM but never my teammate, and I hope someday we make that happen (though as Bengals vs Steelers fans I'm not sure how we'd learn to play nicely together...). But also, Busch Light, who tracked right with me for the first few seasons of our careers, has gone IA at 705 TPE while I've continued earning and am over 1050 TPE with another two full seasons before regression hits. Last season in particular, I have to wonder what an extra 300 TPE in the middle of the field could have done for the runner up Second Line...We'll never know, but the what if's are there, and I'm happy to prove those who didn't pick me wrong daily!

I think the most defining moment for me would be when Bex was voted in favor of staying as the commish after she was found guilty of committing the infraction of deleting messages during an investigation into tampering or other poorly made jokes. HO expects the users to maintain a level of professionalism but it's own commissioner essentially gets a slap on the wrist and her friends welcome her back with open arms. It clearly set the league up to be run by a clique, and if you're on the outside looking in, you're not going to get a lot of favourable calls or treatment when you're in violation of league rules.

It's clear that had Bex been removed as she should be held the highest standard as league commish and taken accountability of what she did then at least the users would feel that no one is above the law and if you break rules that are established, there will be consequences. There is a reason why there's always a mentality of us vs them now because it's been established that as long as you have friends in HO, you can pretty much get away with anything with just a minor consequence.

I have a couple instances where I definitely could have been drafted higher in the DSFL. If I had known that GMs valued other positions besides OL, maybe I would have changed. But I love the OL position and I feel it’s still undervalued in the league. I know now that people also value more open people in the gen and rookie chats, but I was only part of the gen chat and not the rookie chat. I hadn’t really opened up to anyone during my scouting phase and I’m sure that contributed for me falling down to the 42nd pick in the S27 DSFL draft. When I was invited to the LR’s, I really didn’t know how to interact or go about things when I entered a server. Maybe it was meant to be when I was drafted to the only team in the whole league to have a private LR. In all fairness, I may not be as happy with this league if I went anywhere else besides Tijuana. They have helped me really branch out and are full of good users who have been part of a rich and dominating history in the DSFL. So while it is “great” to reminisce and see who I could have been drafted by, it’s better that it worked out this way instead. I’m proud to be a Lucha now, and forever.
