(S8) - Ultimus Week - JuOSu - 06-26-2018

Playoff Series MVP:

Darren Smallwood stood out as a player in the playoff series between the New Orleans Secodn Line and the Orange County Otters. The Second Line came into the game as a clear underdog, trying to better the favorite Otters. Smallwood rushed 9 times for 41 yards, which is a solid 4.6 yards per carry. Additionally he caught 8 balls for 85 yards, leading the Second Line in catches and 2nd in yards. Smallwood did not manage to get a touchdown, but his contribution in both the rushing and passing game were unparalleled. Additionally, Smallwood had 3 kick returns for 100 yards, giving the Second Line a better field position as well, helping them win the game 20-17 in the end. Smallwood came up big in several situations, creating important first downs along the way and he had a big impact on the game. It would have been really fitting if he had also gotten a touchdown but alas, the rushing touchdown went to Bubba Nuck instead. Perhaps Smallwood will be able to fix that in the Ultimus game! Darren Smallwood was the clear Most Valuably Player of that game for me, after he already had a fantastic season in the regular season.

That Magic Moment:

The Orange County Otters were facing the New Orleans Second Line. For the Otters, they were trying to get back to the Ultimus game. They had previously won three times from Season 4 to Season 6, before losing last season in the first round of the playoffs. They were the clear favorites. The Second Line managed to take an early lead, 10-0 and it looked like they could pull out an unlikely win. Just before halftime, the Otters managed to score a field goal to pull closer. After Otters tied the game twice in the rest of the game, it looked like overtime was inevitable, but Borkus Maximus had one more drive in him. With great use of timeouts, the Second Line got themselves into field goal range and managed to score a 46 yard field goal with 10 seconds left to pull out an incredible last second win against the dominant Otters and they are heading to their first ever Ultimus game. The moment itself was filled with terror and excitement, as the incredible New Orleans' fans were waiting with fear, whether this gutsy kicker Peg Leg would be able get the kick through the uprights, but he managed to, especially from that far, a great accomplishment. It was great to see the absolute ecstasy in the Second Line locker room after the game and seeing how excited everyone was.

Hate the player or the game:

The Philadelphia Liberty were Ultimus champions last season. This year, they ended with a 7-7 record, tied with the Hawks, but based on tiebreakers missed the playoffs. What the hell happened?! How can a team that won the Ultimus fall apart this quickly and miss the playoffs. Even just one win more would have meant they were in the playoffs again. Not only did management have several issues this season, with leadership changing more than once I believe. Additionally Liberty also traded away some big talent to build for the future, but at what cost? Even one win more and they are in the playoffs and have a shot at another title. It seems like a massive waste. This team was 5-2 at one point earlier in the season and these trades made them go 2-5 down the stretch to miss the playoffs, including a stretch where they lost four out of five games. You cannot expect to get to the playoffs that way, but come on, as champions last season you have to fight harder than that for success. Where will the Liberty go from here? I think the uncertainty regarding leadership could end up causing them to drop further next season. I would be shocked to see them in the Ultimus next season.

Sit-Down with a Star:

Interview with Angus Winchester @timeconsumer

Q: The Otters had three titles in a row from S4 to S6 and were looking to get back into the Ultimus game this season but came up short. How is the mood now in Orange County after the loss yesterday?

A: I think mostly the players feel like they let themselves down. Everyone knows how we could have played better on both sides of the ball to flip the script on this game. We didn't make any major mistakes, but it was a combination of several small mistakes that led to us losing that game. Had we played to the level of our expectations we could have put up a better fight, and some guys are kicking themselves a little bit over those small mistakes. However we are going into the offseason looking to improve and find some young talent to help us stay competitive.

Q: What do you feel went wrong for the Otters in the game? Did you underestimate the opponent?

A: Hah, the last thing we would do is underestimate New Orleans. They were a strong team before the tradeline and became a powerhouse after it. I think the most obvious issues were that we struggled to stop the run on defense and that we sputtered on offense. You can't expect to win a game with a time-of-possession difference like we had.

Q: Who do you think will win the Ultimus game now?

A: It's going to be a really close one I think. I'd probably give the edge to Yellowknife, both with the game being on their turf as well as how dominant they have played all season. But I'm certainly not writing off New Orleans, I know first hand how hard they are to beat.

Q: What are the expectations in Orange County and for you personally heading into next season?

A: Our expectations are the same they have always been. Get a little bit better every season. We took a bit of a step back this season, and that is bound to happen sometimes. So we intend to make a few tweaks and as always, find some good young talent in the draft. I'm loving what some of these new guys like Mason Brown, Jaylon Broxton, and (kind of new?) Atwell and Crush did this season. Personally I just want to try and keep up with these new guys. I'm getting old and these young guys on our defense are fast as hell.

Robbed: Write about why a team that failed to make the playoffs should have over somebody else. Can be completed at any point

Ugh this is kind of a tough one because in reality there's no outright team that deserved to hit the playoffs or got "robbed" as you phrase it.

The Philadelphia Liberty completed their fire sale just before the week 10 trade deadline and pretty much knocked themselves out of the playoff run that week, or so you thought. They hung on to actually secure a 7-7 record, which was good enough for 3rd in the NSFC just behind the tied Baltimore Hawks who also had a 7-7 record.

The Colorado Yeti secured an impressive 6-8 record which defied expectations but not a playoff worthy team and any point, but they will be next season. The Arizona Outlaws struggled to a 5-9 record behind a 9-5 New Orleans Second Line side which showed to signs of slowing down.

The San Jose Sabercats mustered an impressive ugh 1 win from 14 regular season games so again, to conclude no team was really robbed out of a playoff spot. The best 4 teams rightfully got into this years playoff bouts. No real team out of the other 4 deserved to even hit the playoffs and didn't. Whether it was the stuttering Yeti, the firesale Liberty or the anemic Outlaws team. None of them were robbed, no team was robbed.

Matchup Nightmares: Pick an offensive and defensive player who will be going up against each other and why it will be a nightmare for one of them. (Must be completed before the playoff series you write about)

The Yellowknife Wraiths will faceoff with home field advantage, opposing the New Orleans Second Line and really there's a big matchup at play. That matchup is of course New Orleans Second Line wide receiver Dustin Evans who will be facing off against Yellowknife Wraiths veteran cornerback Dermot Lavelle in a series that will decide the very fate of this years Ultimus game.

Evans is supposedly ending the tail end of his career but still putting up stats like 65 catches, 1087 yards and 11 touchdowns. When he's playing this good why would he ever retire?

Lavelle on the other hand is on a downswing compared to his 7 interception season which was a recent memory before last season, this year he finished on a mere 4 interceptions with 18 pass deflections and despite being at the absolute peak of his career, many are concerned with his ability to shadow Dustin Evans downfield for an extended time, especially in a heavy man to man coverage which Yellowknife frequents.

Either way the Yellowknife v NOLA fixture will definitely be a great occasion and regardless of the overall result , we will have a new Ultimus champion. Please for the lord's sake let it be Yellowknife's day, I can't deal with many more chokes in the playoffs.

You guys crashed out in the NSFC Conference game to the Yellowknife Wraiths, 38-24. What exactly went wrong there?

How is the morale in the locker room after the playoff early exit?

Many have speculated that the Baltimore Hawks may themselves head into firesale mode in the near future, can you confirm/deny these claims and why?

Had you defeated Yellowknife in the playoffs, how confident would you have been heading into an Ultimus versing NOLA?

Just how many years does Blocksdale have left in the tank?

How did it feel to finally break the curse?

Well it's been a long time coming. 8 years in the works in fact and it just feels great to finally win the big one, the Ultimus. We've come so close too many times and thankfully this time we weren't denied from hoisting it above our heads. Many people speculated that we were cursed or that the Burial Grounds were built on an actual burial grounds (possibly) but regardless we persevered and managed to bring the Ultimus home to Canada.

Did you think you guys would win it?

If you're heading into a game with the mindset that you're going to lose it then you will do exactly that, lose it. We went out their with the same mindset as always, go out there to win the game instead of just to not lose it. Everybody was pulling for each other on both sides of the ball and it worked out for us in the end.

What're expectations for S9?

Hopefully to repeat and bring a second championship home to Yellowknif
e!

Who was the best player on the S8 Wraiths and why?

Really it's hard to single one person out as everybody really pushed hard for each other all season and really it all worked out for us, everybody put in the work and we got what we deserved. I just hope going forward we can replicate all of this and bring another one home!

Playoff Series MVP: Choose an MVP for one of the playoff series and write about why you chose them.

In the matchup of powerhouse QBs with different flairs this was pegged to be a barn burner, and the final result did not disappoint. In a game without much defense it was one unsung hero that stepped up, as he has for his entire career, and helped the Wraiths move on for their third shot at a title. Marcus Kane was the MVP of the Hawks - Wraiths NSFC Championship Game.

The final stat-line first, 12 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Playing his LB/NB hybrid position, Kane was all over the field, zipping around and shutting down the big plays, and even creating a few losses. He was a key element in limiting Owen Taylor's effectiveness on the ground as it took him 31 tries to reach 108 yards. Kane allowed a net of 37 yards on his 12 tackles, good for an average of 3.08 yards per play. He was effective from the start of the game to the end, only giving up yardage of 9 or greater twice in his twelve tackles.

This is really no surprise to the Yellowknife faithful though, as Kane has been a glue guy ever since he entered the league, performing any role needed for the team. Top ten in forced fumbles, fumbles recovered, playoff tackles, playoff sacks, playoff TFLs. If you're surprised by this, you don't watch Wraiths football.
@Dangles13

Going to Disneyland!:Who was the Ultimus MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland.

In an NSFL first we have a joint MVP of the Ultimus between Robby Rainey and Micah Hendrix.

Robby Rainey has been the steady eddy touchdown machine for the Wraiths all season and the Ultimus proved no different as he had an unspectacular 22 attempts for 75 yards and 2 catches for 19 yards. However in that yeoman's effort he scored the first 2 touchdowns of the Wraiths win, and set a bruising pace that the rest of the squad fed off of. He allowed the wide receivers to average over 23 yards per catch, bringing the NSFL back to an older style of football, hammer it up the middle and bomb it deep. The strategy could only work with Rainey's efforts and is the reason he was awarded Co-MVP.

Micah Hendrix came to the Wraiths in a mid-season trade from his long term team, the Liberty. He was an ace in the hole for us the entire season, as he solidified an already strong defense. He showed out when it mattered the most as well, filling the stat sheet from his linebacker position. He ended the game with 6 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and four pass breakups. This is where Hendrix has shone all season, defending the pass, and if you put it all together he basically forced two three and outs all by himself. His play wasn't one dimensional and neither was the defense. He deserves his award.

The pair decided to live out the Disney World dream together and could be seen riding all the attractions together. They were in the same teacup in the Mad Teacup Ride, wandered through Epcot in awe together, and shot through space mountain, mouths agape. This is just the beginning of a dream offseason

Interviewed @`Fire-Bred`

1. You've had a really strong first season, what do you think your chances are for Defensive Rookie of the Year?

I preformed better than my fellow rookies. But I believe my odds are a 1:2 chance of getting defensive rookie of the year, because they could easily go TPE wise and give it to Ramero. If they go stats wise I could have a chance at defensive rookie of the year and rookie of the year.

2. With your team just now losing to the young New Orleans Second Line, do you think the Otters have one more run in them for a championship in S9?

If we work free agency and the draft right we do have a great chance at returning. I am unsure if Boss is retiring or not but if he doesn't I want to get him and Winchester another ring for them

3. What do you make of your play in your first playoff game? Did you do enough?

We did not win, so no I did not do enough, i can get back to back to back tackles on a unimportant druve, but I couldn't even get to the ball on their last drive, you may say Mason you tied a record and I will say so what... we lost I should've preformed even better, so it was great but I let us down.

4. Elway or Manning? Fake Teeth Shannon Sharpe or Dimple Chin Terrell Davis?

Can I have both quarterbacks? If I would have to pick between the two I would take Elway. The next one is easy, Terrel Davis everyay

@Daybe interviewed me

1. You're one win away. What is it like coming to an already contending team and making a difference?

2. How do you plan on stopping the mighty NOLA offense?

3. What are going to be the keys to success?

4. What did you learn from the NSFC championship?

It feels pretty nice. I don't really care about my stats so it's cool that I can already be a part of a good team and have a chance at win the Ultimus.

lol if you think NOLA has good offense you have to open your eyes. The only thing they're good at is getting shut down by our defense.

Dermot Lavelle has to play as well as he's paid for once, and our equipment manager has to deflate our footballs to just the right PSI for us to have an advantage.

That we're the best team in the NSFC.

New Talent: Write about which S8 trade will or did have the biggest impact in the playoffs. Can be written at any time depending on if you choose to write about who already has or who will do good
New Orleans Second Line entire season of trades should get a lot of attention, not just one since it was series of moves that brought NOLA to their first Ultimus appearance ever.
They started their season with a nice that didn't necessarily seemed as a win now, and out of necessity traded away their safety Jaylen Broxton for the 7th overall pick in Season 8 draft and cornerback Vladimir Fyodorovich.
Later on, more significant moves begun with acquiring top Cornerback Benson Bayley for a hefty price of three picks from San Jose Sabercats. Yeti who drove up the price ultimately lose the bidding war, that actually might have decided which of these teams make playoffs. Immediately after the second line became a defensive juggernaut since their defensive line was not as strong as now. With one inactive cornerback and just a 3rd-year player manning the second side, opponents wide receivers feasted on them.
During Philadelphia Liberty fire sale New Orleans Second Line acquired five times tight end of the season in Paul Di Mirio alongside defensive tackle King. His addition was like finding the missing piece that finally made whole New Orleans Second Line offence click.
These moves assured playoffs berth for New Orleans Second Line and their final appearance, will they be enough for Ultimus title? We will know soon enough!

Root for the Underdog: Pick an away team in an upcoming game and try to convince yourself (and us) why they can win. (Must be completed before the playoff series you write about)

New Orleans Second Line can definitely win the Ultimus Trophy this season. Sure, they're a huge underdog, but they can pull it off.
The first thing about winning is keeping momentum. And boy do the Second Line have momentum going into this game. They won 8 of their last ten games,. Their first loss was by 4 points, and their most recent loss (against the recently defeated Orange County Otters) was by a single point. They are looking good going into this. This time, they beat the Otters by 3 points, showing that even in the last 3 weeks they've improved.
The Wraiths won a nail-biter by 14 against the 7 and 7 Hawks. That's not looking very good. The Wraiths also lost 3 of their last 8 games, to the Orange County Otters, the 5 and 9 Arizona Outlaws and the Otters once again. If the Second Line can beat the Otters in playoff football, they can beat the Wraiths who took two losses from them.
No one is standing out for the Second Line, but as a team they're coming together to be better then their individual pieces. If there's an underdog that I'm willing to bet on, it's the New Orleans Second Line in the biggest game of the year.

The Most Valuable Player of the Baltimore Hawks versus the Yellowknife Wraiths was undoubtedly Robby Rainey. Rainey was a dominant force for the Wraiths, and the idiots who pick Offensive Player of the Game were very confused. His stat sheet doesn't look glorious, as he only had 33 yards on 11 runs. An average of 3 yards per carry isn't going to do anything for anyone, and is downright dismal on it's own.

However, Robby Rainey made his touches count. He didn't need to be the impact player every down, just when it mattered. The Wraiths were down 21 to 7, and Rainey scored on a 3 yard run to make it a one score game.

The game was tied at 24, and Rainey ran for another touchdown to give his team a 6 point (7 with the extra point) lead. With less than 2 minutes remaining, he ran for another touchdown, cementing the game.

While his numbers aren't great, he did what he needed to when it mattered most. Without Rainey in the game, we have a completely different turnout. It's not always about the person that puts up the biggest numbers, but is about the players who take the touches they get and make the most out of it.

Robbed: Write about why a team that failed to make the playoffs should have over somebody else. Can be completed at any point

When you look at teams that maybe should've made the playoffs but didn't, you shouldn't look any farther than last season's champions in the Philadelphia Liberty.

Halfway through the season, the Liberty decided that this was a perfect time to enter a re-build mode and trade most of their players away. The Liberty weren't as dominant as they were last season, but they were winning games and had a great chance to make it back to the championship round. But, they traded everyone.

They traded away: Micah Hendrix, Eli Kamaka, Damien Kroetch, Clifford Rove, Vikian Melamedov, Paul DiMirio and Godfrey King.

This is insane!

Hendrix had 5 tackles, a sack and an interception in last years championship game. Kamaka had 4 tackles and a sack. Kroetch had 21 rushing attempts for 81 yards. Rove had 6 tackles. DiMirio had 4 receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. And King had 4 tackles and a sack.

These are the players you DON'T trade away. For some reason, Philly went into a rebuild way ahead of schedule and ended up costing themselves these playoffs, and possibly another championship. I won't ever get these early rebuild decisions, but I'm not the GM. I still think they could've made it.

Championship Game Recap: Do a recap of the best play from the championship game. Must be completed after the Championship Game

The Championship game in the NSFL is always a fun one to watch, even though one team must walk away hanging their heads at getting so far but being unable to win. The team that had to walk away this season was the New Orleans Second Line.

The game started in their favor with a 45 yard field goal by Peg Leg, but should-be MVP Robby Rainey took over and gave the Yellowknife Wraith an insurmountable lead with 7 minutes left in the second quarter! Rainey scored two on the ground, one from 4 and another from 2 yards out.

Dustin Evans looked to bring the game closer, but then Eric Kennedy reigned in a pass from Mat Akselsen for a 36 yard touchdown.

These three scores would be too much for the Second Line to overcome. An errant pass by Maximus III didn't help the Second Line muster a comeback either. Lavelle would get credit for the interception.

At the end of the third, New Orleans would have to punt twice on back to back drives. And the fourth quarter was started by 3 Second Line penalties (for a total of 23 yards). It was ended by two more punts.

New Orleans had a shot, but blew it as they couldn't convert their third downs(7/19).

the unsung hero for the playoffs has to be peg leg, any time he was called upon to kick a field goal or an extra point he went out there and he did it. kickers aren't thought of as game deciders until they miss a last second field goal but all the 3 pointers and extra points add u at the end of the game. he also did hit a game winner in the playoffs nonetheless. in my own opinion kickers are very underappreciated at all levels of football, and with his performance this playoff season i may rank peg leg at the top of playoff kicker performances all time. you have to have a special team first mentality to only take acknowledgement when you make a game winner, even though you do so much more to help your team win each and every game. if peg leg has made every field goal all season but missed one field goal that "lost" the game for his team in the playoffs he would be hated among most fans of the team just ask blair walsh what that feels like. the unsung hero in my opinion is a better award to receive than MVP, it shows not only was your performance great, but you did it with such humbleness and no need of notoriety among your peers or the fans.

(S8) - Ultimus Week - dub - 06-27-2018

Playoff Series MVP

Rainey led the entire NSFL in touchdowns (rushing or receiving) this season, so expecting him to slow down in the NSFL Playoffs was silly. The Ultimus featured two stout defenses (the top two defenses in sacks and interceptions), and the top two rushing teams (in rushing yards and touchdowns), so we knew we were in for a conservative, bruising game. The Wraiths scored 29 touchdowns on the ground, 12 more than the next highest team (NO) with 17, and more rushing touchdowns than the Liberty, Outlaws, and Yeti combined.
But Rainey was only ranked 5th in the league in terms of rushing yards, and with only a 3.8 yd/carry average, below the mean in the league. Rainey clearly is an efficient scorer with power to spare - he's stronger by man than half his offensive line. With five rushing touchdowns over two games, including two in the Ultimus, he continued his trend. With only 108 rushing yards in two games on 33 carries, his average yard per carry is a boring 3.2 yards, even lower than his league average. But five touchdowns and an Ultimus Championship later, Rainey gets my vote as the series MVP, the tip of the spear for a hard working, efficient team-oriented offense.

Robbed: Write about why a team that failed to make the playoffs should have over somebody else. Can be completed at any point

To be honest, this is the first season where every team that deserved to be in the playoffs actually made it. The SaberCats, the Outlaws, and the Yeti are all rebuilding or pretty darn bad roster builds. The Liberty decided to undergo a mid season rebuild so that pretty much eliminated them from the playoffs. So that leaves 4 teams. And those are the playoff match ups. It's weird not writing about the Liberty getting screwed by the Hawks, or how difficult the AFSC division is having the Cats, Outlaws and the Otters always slugging it out. Previous to S8, there were 3 really good teams in each division and someone's dreams were crushed every Week 14. This year, everyone knew the playoffs pretty much by week 10 or 12. I will write about the Yeti a little bit though. The amount of work they put in the last season to fortify their rebuild is incredible. It's been roughly 4 or 5 seasons of hard rebuilding, so for them to just fall short of a playoff spot this year was tough, but let's get real here, they will be NSFC champs withing a season or two. 197

New Talent: Write about which S8 trade will or did have the biggest impact in the playoffs. Can be written at any time depending on if you choose to write about who already has or who will do good

There were tons of huge trades at the deadline this year. With the PHI and SJS rebuilds in full swing, lots of vets were moving around. 2 key trades that happened was Benson Bayley moving to the Second Line and Micah Hendrix being sent to the Yellowknife Wraiths. Both moves fortified the defenses in maybe no positions of need, but the secondary and linebackers are so vital to a strong defence that a surplus of talent is never a bad thing. Bayley coming in and replacing Brister was a huge upgrade, and just what the young Second Line D needed. Hendrix is another vet that came in and lined up beside another legend Boss Tweed to make up probably the best linebacker corp in the league. And guess what, these moves paid off. Both teams were in the finals. The Wriaths won, but I don't think NOLA makes the finals without Bayley. 153

Unsung Hero:Who was the unsung hero of the playoffs, convince us. (Can be completed after the Ultimus game)

Unsung hero of the playoffs? Well that's tough because so many people on the Wraiths contributed to a huge playoff victory. You could say Akselsen, but he's the QB, no way he's unsung. The run game was huge, Bobby Rainey is a beast, but he's been a beast all year so there's no way he's the "unsung" hero. Eric Kennedy and Bailey Cook are monsters, McPoyal is a catch machine, but are they unsung? I don't think so. I'll go with a weird choice here. I'm gonna say Dermot. It's weird to consider him unsung, but he doesn't get enough credit for how much of an impact player he is. He regularly holds the #1 WR in check and even manages to get a handful of INTs each year. So for him to get a beautiful pick early in the Ultimus game is a great way to cap his playoff resume so far. 156

Going to Disneyland!:Who was the Ultimus MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland. (Can be completed after the Ultimus game)

Ultimus MVP: One of the Penningtons. Do you really care which one it is? No. Do I know which one it is? No. Will all three of them end up going to Disneyland together and sleeping in the same King sized bed for 4 nights? Yes. That's the way the Penningtons work. So really, it's hilarious that Pennington won the Ultimus MVP. The linebacker had a great game, but now he's gotta have 2 others tag along and spoil his victory lap in Disneyland. Though to be fair, those 3 young guns might like all the rides and the stuffed animals. And I can imagine Thad standing in front of Splash mountain and getting soaked time and time again until Chad and Brad have to drag him away. Pretty much, who knows what the Penningtons get up to, but they are hilarious and we should give them the MVP just to see what shenanigans they can get up to in Disneyland. 162
