(S9) - Weekend PT 3 - Pets - AW13 - 07-28-2018 In South Dakota, nobody cares what you do so Joliet had an interesting pet growing up. A red kangaroo named Roger lived with Joliet from the ages of 12 until he moved out at 18 though Roger is still living to this day with the Christ family in Brookings. Countless times Joliet has been kicked by Roger when they were rough housing but it only strengthened the young Christ in preparation for a great football career. Most of the time, Roger is a laid back marsupial and loves to cuddle up with people and watch a movie but sometimes he just needs to go hop around on the ranch. Having a red kangaroo as a pet growing up made Joliet unique growing up and he always shows his uniqueness on and off the field so it was a perfect combination. It is certain that Joliet will be heartbroken when Roger finally passes but they can live up to 20 years in captivity and Roger is certain to live on to cheer for Joliet Christ in the big leagues. Even now, Roger can be sometimes seen wearing a custom Portland Pythons jersey with Roger Christ on the back sporting Joliet's number 11. (S9) - Weekend PT 3 - Pets - mabb - 07-28-2018 Xandra’s border collie, Nax, has been one of the two most influential pets in her life. But, as Nax is still with Xandra and still a teenage doggo, you will likely hear more about him as Xandra’s career continues. So, today she will share about her other influential pet, a hermit crab named Grape. She purchased Grape with her best friend at a boardwalk when they were teens. Her best friend also bought a hermit crab, Peanut, and Grape and Peanut were destined to be best friends like their owners. Their names were also reflective of their shell colors - if you've ever been to a boardwalk, you know their shells are painted all different colors and with all different patterns. Grape’s shell was a nice lavender color, matte finish, and your classic rounded snail shell. Peanut had a periwinkle-type shell that was shades of beige. Grape and Peanut would race each other around, and Xandra and her best friend would have great afternoons playing with them in between DDR sessions. He started out living in a tupper ware, with grass, rocks, and water in it. It was amazing watching him grow and seeing his shell develop. When he got to the size of my hand, I moved him into a small terrarium. This time I could get a small pond in there so he could stay wet or dry on the grass/rocks. A lot of people ask how a turtle can be any fun since they don't really do much, but I loved him. I'd take him to our backyard and let him walk around under the sun. He'd peak at the garden, I'd have his food there and he would just chill outside. He'd love to sit beside me and just relax. Eventually he grew to about 35 pounds and hovered around that. As he got older, and bigger, I noticed that staying in a glass box just wasn't working out. As much as I didn't want to give away my buddy, I had to. I found a wildlife sanctuary that had a great place for him to spend his days. Huge open space, big water beds, and a great spot to sleep. They promised a wonderful life for him and I was thankful for that. I still visit here and there to see how he's doing. For Portland defensive back, Shannon Hobbs, that pet was a Halloween moon crab named Luna. When Shannon was seven years old, he asked his parents for a dog. He had never really known responsibility like that or knew what it took to care for another living creature. Before his parents would get him a dog, they said he needed to prove he could take care of something else first. Something that required a little less care and constant attention. This is where Luna comes into play. They went to their local pet store and looked for the perfect pet for Shannon. They looked at snakes, turtles, even a goldfish, then the Halloween moon crab caught their eye. They got Luna, took her home, and Shannon was absolutely infatuated with the little crab. He took the best care of her and proved he was responsible enough for a dog. (S9) - Weekend PT 3 - Pets - Daybe - 07-28-2018 Ryan Applehort has a parrot. Why he adopted one? We still don’t know to this day. Unfortunately, this gets the young quarterback in all sorts of deep muck and trouble. For example, one time he brought his parrot, Rico to the Yeti lounge. Dwayne Aaron was blasting some sort of rap song. Rico picked up on it and started repeating it. When he brought Rico along back home, that was all he said. So needless to say, when his mother visited that night, there was going to be trouble. He tried hiding Rico in the closet, but as soon as his mother was ready to go, Dwayne Aaron and the rest of the team showed up. They were pulling a prank on him. “We ready to patty here!” said Dwayne. Applehorts mom frowned and stepped out the door when Rico started singing the lyrics. “Ryan, you kick me out for a party? And eh are you playing such horrendous music? Disgusting!” Needless to say, Applehort’s mom wasn’t very happy. (S9) - Weekend PT 3 - Pets - Grapehead - 07-28-2018 Damien Arnold met his dog Arthur when he was walking home from high school one day. He heard some rustling in a box in an alley behind his school, and when he went to investigate, he found a puppy. Damien tucked him into his backpack and rushed home to show his parents. He picked the name Arthur because that’s what the box he found him in had written on it. For now Damien had to leave him behind with his parents in Michigan, but he says he plans to move Arthur when he gets settled with his NSFL team. “He’s just too used to having space to run around,” Arnold said. “I’m living in an apartment right now, and he would just go stir-crazy being cooped up.” After speaking with his parents though, it seems he might have a little trouble getting them to let Arthur go. They say it’s very obvious how much Arthur misses Damien though, and are sure he cannot wait for the DSFL season to end so he can see him again. (S9) - Weekend PT 3 - Pets - trslick - 07-28-2018 We have a big place in Colorado and a farm in Kansas, there is no lack of pets! I played defensive tackle, so I'm a large old man! In 2010 on easter eve, I was rushed to the ER, I had a bad heart attack and they couldn't fix my problem! Doc said I would never be able to work again and may not make it to Christmas(fooled them)! My wife came home with this little bundle of a pup that weighed a few pounds! She acted like she knew I was sick and stayed in bed with me all the time! I named her Ashes, she is still with me, we look after each other, she is full grown now and a huge 3 1/2 pounds! She is not afraid of anything no matter how big, she took after a bull that she thought was after me on the farm once! Kind of like I am, but we are both growing old! Had a nice picture, but don't know how to put on here! I remember selecting him, it was a great childhood memory, as I was surrounded by puppies at the spry age of five years old. I was told that every pup in there was a girl, and that we wanted the male, who was the only one with a white belly. Of course, I spent a good deal of time trying to find him, and just generally playing with his sisters and him, but soon enough I located our culprit, who we brought home soon after. He proceeded to follow at my heels constantly, my friend who accompanied me on all of my adventures through the thin strips of woods around our house and into the yards of welcoming neighbors. Those were good times, but eventually, we moved away, and he grew older. Our adventures turned into sitting on the porch, watching cars roll bye and the sun set, or simple laying next to each other in the home. |
