Eidur Gustavsson of the Yellowknife Wraiths is the best rookie defender in the league. You might not know it yet but he is going to be a force for the Wraiths, especially after the recent trade that saw Boggs shipped to the Yeti. Eidur is everything you want in an edge rusher, he stands 6'6" and weighs a muscular 330lbs. You do not want to be tasked with stopping this man! The raw strength of Gustavsson is going to be on full display as he seals the edge and hauls down tiny running backs like King Kong swatting down planes.

His foot speed is a bit of concern right now and that might impact his numbers a bit but the coaching staff were raving about his coach-ability and they were hopeful to see this fixed by mid season. Personally I don't think it will matter, he has a motor that doesn't quit and the heart to match and once he gets to full speed he's like a gotdamn locomotive engine. The Wraiths also boast a spectacular defence with a potent secondary and that will lead to this Icelandic giant coverage sacks. Rumour has it that Gustavsson would have been a first round pick but managers were scared off his foreign upbringing and not being immersed in the football culture and I cannot wait to be there when he shows those GMs how wrong they were.

I am most excited to see Colorado Yeti safety Vash Erikson in action. Erikson was recently traded for from the Arizona Outlaws in part of the Yeti blockbuster Philippe Carter/Mayran Jackson trade. The #12 overall pick was on the fence when it came to declaring for the S3 draft. "Should I stay at Ohio State or should I declare for the NSFL?" Erikson wondered. Eventually he made a decision to join the S3 NSFL draft. As one of the more talented players in the draft he went in the second round. Watching this man's work ethic at my first practice in Colorado was amazing. It was breathtaking (might just be Boggs adjusting to the mile high). He was laying big hits and was gliding on the field speedily, breaking up passes and helping bring down running backs. On one play, we were running the play engage eight. Two corners and a safety dropped back into coverage and everyone else blitzed. Since we were doing full contact drills, we brought in a practice dummy to be quarterback to protect Noble. At the whistle, I started running towards the quarterback. There was no one to block me, so I ran freely. I slowed down a bit, seeing that I was the only one in the area. Not for long. Vash came in flying and lowered his shoulder and delivered a huge blow to the dummy. Virtually everyone on the practice field was in shock, offense or not. Erikson just shrugged and smiled and jogged back into the defensive huddle. All I can say is wow.

With the 12th overall pick, The Arizona Outlaws take Vash Erikson, Safety out of Ohio State.
September 10th 2017
Vash Erikson, Mayran Jackson, and a Season 4, 2nd round pick have been traded to The Colorado Yetis for Big Bot and Phillipe Carter.
Vash Erikson made quite the impression on the league scouts upon his declaration of joining the NSFL Draft Class of Season 3. Enough so, that he managed to get packaged in a trade before ever setting foot on the professional gridiron.
Vash is viewed as an explosive defensive back, with a large skill set that can be applied to any defensive backfield. While he has yet to show what he's got in the pros. He clearly has impressed enough people, to become trade bait and stay in the conversation as player that will be debuting in the NSFL and maturing into a perennial superstar. His intelligence and game planning gives this rookie some veteran insight. He has also worked heavily on his sped, adding to his playmaking ability. Season 3 holds many questions as to where The Yetis will fall come playoffs, but this young man may be the X factor that is needed to push this defense to the post season.

The Preseason buzz is all about Rookie Antonio Sandoval. While he’s not a totally unknown quantity, having come off of waivers, it’s still a tremendous pressure to be taken at the number one draft spot. When you want to be a contender (like the Colorado Yeti want to be this year), this is exactly the kind of move you make to secure your team an advantage. This kid has shown he has a strong work ethic and is number one with a bullet on my list of potential rookie breakouts.

This number one pick isn’t without risk of course; we’ve heard rumblings that there may or may not be some controversy surrounding Mr. Sandoval’s immigration status. Whether there’s truth to the rumors, or if you believe the naysayers (who are typically fans of competitors) that say his birth certificate is a fake, you can’t deny the kid has natural ability. Something tells me that if the Yeti’s make a bowl run this year, the lovely citizens of Colorado will defend their newly minted rookie with everything they’ve got.

A notable mention to my rookie hot list is Brice Boggs of the Yellowknife Wraiths. Just like Antonio Sandoval, Brice is a waiver player that has returned as a rookie via the draft. Much like the number one pick, Brice already proven himself to be a hard working talent.. We expect to hear more about him in the near future.
