The -eau being at the end of many french names was custom for Cajuns. For those who could not read or write english on their own, documents would be signed with the "X." Creating this eau-x at the end of names.

I don't like celebrating the ignorance of my ancestors. That's just me. It's become something else now entirely and I can understand the slogan "Geaux" ____

Didn't know that.

So clearly the Soileaus were smarter than the Boudreauxs, Thibodeauxs, and Robichauxs.

But what about Fontenot? Landry? Guidry? Hebert? Broussard? Bergeron? Richard? Melancon? Trahan? The "X" didn't stick for any of them? I mean, I get that the Broussardx wouldn't make any damn sense....but why not Labarrex? Could they read?

And what about old French names that did end in X like Devaux?

I know you likely don't have answers to all this. I'm just thinking out loud.

EDIT: I almost forgot...what about Bordeaux, France?

I don't know, The x at the end was just something my Grandmother explained to me, She spoke Cajun and that side of the family is from cutoff. I trusted her. Some research in the last 10 minutes shows that with any bit of history, we have different historians trusting different sources and the x at the end may not have been the case.

,but I do know how to spell Go.

Can't spell calculated though?

But clearly if there is a French city in -eaux we can't immediately say that using Geaux is celebrating the ignorance of our ancestors. We're just bastardizing the French language. That's clearly celebrating the ignorance of our contemporaries. Not sure which one is worse....

I like to celebrate the inebriation of our present fathers. Beer run at 3 am? Just walk to the circle K.

My parents didn't name me Calculated.

I think I'll just keep it simple.

I think spelling "Go" like "Geaux" is dumb. So I do not do it. Regardless, I love my Tigers and still cheer every Saturday.
