(S4) - PT #4 - Free Agent Review - ExemplaryChad - 11-16-2017

When Chris Orosz announced that he was leaving the Wraiths, everyone knew it was going to change the complexion of at least two teams: first, Yellowknife was going to look very different; second, whatever team he went to was getting a top-tier talent at QB. After slow negotiations and a very deliberate process, he decided that San Jose was the place for him, and the Sabercats have looked like a very different team since he’s been there.

After getting off to a relatively quick start at 4-2, the Sabercats are not looking like a team who has failed to make the playoffs every year in the league. They’re starting to look like contenders. Of course, not all of this is up to the acquisition of Orosz. They’ve also retooled their defense and made some key switches to help give Orosz some tools. Nevertheless, no one can argue the impact that having the two-time Best QB in the league has made. Even after Ethan Hunt was coming along and proving himself a talented player, no one can argue that this move was a significant upgrade for a struggling Sabercats offense. They certainly look to be struggling no longer, keeping pace with the Outlaws, who rank only second behind the Otters in points for. Well done, San Jose, and best of luck!

Josh Garden to the Arizona Outlaws was a huge pick up. Adding to a good reieving corps, this free agency move made the Outlaws evern more dangerous. A lot of talk about solidifying the future of the "dynasty" after this move. The move has worked out great for Garden, through the first 6 games, he leads the league in yards with 708, second most touchdowns with 7. He has been earning the $23M that Arizona Outlaws' management threw at him in the off-season. The pay might be chalked up as too much to some critics around the league, but it got Garden to Arizona, and he's standing out as the top receiver. This can be refuted if/when the Outlaws win the championship. We'll all see whether this $23 million investment was worth it for the Outlaws. Either way, Garden plays lights out and gets paid, helping the Outlaws continue to dominate. The beauty of the deal for the Outlaws is that the contract isn't a one-and-done, Garden signed a 3 season contract and will be here through S6. This is big for Arizona's continued success, and will allow them to be perennial contenders. At the end of the season, we'll be able to judge this signing.

The biggest free agency splash in league history was undoubtedly Josh Garden to the Arizona Outlaws. Take the best team in the league, one so dominant it causes people to question if fundamental changes need to be made to the league; now add to that the best receiver in the league. This was a move that caused every range of emotion among the community. Some were upset, some were even furious, but the Outlaws were unanimously thrilled with the addition. So how has it panned out thus far?

Pretty good I guess. Well, if you consider leading the league in receptions and yards, and being in second for touchdowns as good at least. The Outlaws dropped their last two games after starting the season 4-0, but that wasn't due to the performance of Josh Garden. Coming off of back games with at least 7 catches and 110 yards (Side note: fuck whoever named their guy G, Jarden. Made me have to re-write an entire sentence there), Garden is on record pace for receiving yards (Projected: 1652), receptions (Projected: 100), and TDs (Projected: 16)

The addition of Josh Garden to an already elite squad has and will continue to pay dividends. He's paired with who is likely the second-best QB in the league in King Bronko, and has what is undoubtedly the best defense on the other side of the ball. If the Outlaws weren't already perennial champions, Garden would be the last piece to get them there. Instead, he becomes a piece to make an already terrifying dynasty even more deadly. Will his contract be a detriment in the future? Only time will tell, but it IS frontloaded and may not be a huge burden down the road. As for now, Garden is certainly the biggest free agency pick up of the year.

Josh Garden famously left the Yellowknife Wraiths to go to the three-time champion Arizona Outlaws. Many in the league were upset over this move, given that the best Wide Receiver in free agency picked the best team. Many wanted more parity in the league and him to go to a worse team. But for him, everything seems to work out. Garden leads the league in yards and is second in the league in catches and touchdowns. Overall, he is easily the most impressive Wide Receiver this year. The Outlaws are 4-2 and should still be the favorite to win the title a fourth time in a row. Still, one has to imagine a league where Garden does not join Arizona. Maybe they struggle more and are only 3-3 and miss the playoffs. Maybe another team would be helped by Garden and eventually reach the playoffs instead. Someone like Colorado or the Legion as the worst teams in the league could have used Garden tremendously. The Liberty could be a playoff team with Garden. He could have even helped his Wraiths out. Any decision but this one would have been better. It really could have been a much more interesting league if he made a different decision.

Will Fulton made an interesting decision in free agency and joined the - at-the-time - worst team in the league, the Las Vegas Legion. It was a great move for this league, spreading out the active players a bit more and leading to the Legion being valued more highly. At the time, the Legion only had a handful of active players. Now they are looking a bit better.

And it worked out well! Fulton is 2nd in the league in tackles and also has two interceptions. With half a season to go, he will be sure to be over 100 tackles. A fantastic season for any player on defense. And the Legion are playing better. While they are still in last place, they are 2-4 and seem closer than they ever have been. They are also a better team than the Yeti and seem close to the Liberty again. Their defense has given up less points and will be even better going forward.

The free agent move came together with P. Carter who is a cornerback and has also helped make the defense better. With two interceptions, Carter has had an impact on this Legion defense as well, but the majority of the improvement can be put on the shoulders of Will Fulton.

This week's PT is especially difficult for me. Being a rookie and someone who only joined this website after the free agency I have found it hard to complete this PT. However I will be giving it my all and going over one or two picks that I have learned about from my fellow players. First up is Josh Garden having originally played for Yellow Knife Wraiths and was traded to the Arizona Outlaws taking twenty three million in his first year. Ethan Hunt then signs with the Yellow Knife Wraiths to replace Josh Garden and eventually changes his name to Gosh Jarden. Josh Garden currently leads the NSFL in receiving yards at an impressive seven hundred and eight yards. The next closest receiver has only six hundred and eighty three yards so only twenty five yards less but Josh Garden has more touch downs. Speaking of touchdowns Josh Garden has the second most receiving touchdowns in the league. He currently has seven touchdowns only one less than the number one position at eight. In conclusion Garden is being paid a lot of money at twenty three million in the first year however he is proving to be the best receiver in the league hands down. So I give the Arizona Outlaws an A+ in their pick up of Josh Graden.

Free Agents have generally been viewed as a quick way to patch holes in your roster, but not the way to build a contender. Free Agents are usually, older and more expensive, but are usually better than a FOB (Fresh Off the Bench) rookie. So let's examine some of these signings.

1. Josh Garden $23,000,000 - Outlaws: So this signing was clearly helpful to the team as they have the leading receiver in the league, but at what cost? pretty hefty but it doesn't matter as their drafted core doesn't command much salary anyway.

2. Gosh Jarden $12,000,000 - Wraiths: This is a downgrade from Garden but the Wraiths love him just the same. For half the price of name brand, he is contributing and doing what's necessary to help this team in the passing attack.

3. Philippe Carter $2,000,000 - Legion: Well the best LR (allegedly) in the league nabbed the best defensive piece on the market and it will surely bolster their pass defense. At such a cheap price too. What a great signing.

4. Wyatt Fulton $1,000,000 - Legion: Part two of the great offseason haul has them nabbing an impact linebacker. Hopefully this will be enough to bolster the defense and propel the LR from being fun to being winners.

The best Free Agent that picked the right place was none other than Chris Orosz. When you think about what the Sabercats really needed, it was that of a QB who was consistent. Let's take a look at how this team looks so far through 6 games. Orosz has led the offense of the Cats to 1,535 yards which ranks 5th in the league while having 7 TD and 6 INT line. He has completed 139/255 passes for the Cats this year. I think one of the biggest people that have benefited from this is none other than Mayran Jackson. Jackson is currently 3rd in the league in Receiving yards averaging over 100 yards per game. He also has 3 TD. I think he has been the biggest beneficiary of this free agent signing. I think there were a lot of options, but Orosz has fit in perfectly in the San Jose locker room as well increasing the efficiency of the offense. Of course, on defense, there has been a huge impact from Jaylon Lee and Vincent Sharpei who were two changes in the defense, but this Cats team has a solid base moving forward. This has to be the biggest transaction.

One of the most significant free agency signings this past offseason — and one of the only ones I know, because the DSFL is clearly better — was Josh Garden to the 3-time reigning champions, the Arizona Outlaws. The elite Wide Receiver who joined the league in season 1 is a speed receiver, known for his big play ability and talent at beating cornerbacks outside.
Last season, Garden played with the Yellowknife Wraiths where he posted big numbers: 10 touchdowns (T-3rd), 68 receptions (8th), 1,125 yards (8th), and 16.5 yards per reception (T-9th). So far this season with the Outlaws, he’s averaging 16.5 yards per reception again... but less than halfway through the season, he’s at a monster 7 touchdowns, 43 receptions, and a league high 708 yards. If he keeps up this level of play, Garden is certain to break the NSFL single-season touchdown record, and has a pretty good shot at the receiving yards record too. One thing to watch out for is that the other GMs all know this info. They’ll be spending all week before a game in Arizona looking for ways to gameplan against him. The question is, will they be successful? I’d predict not.
To summarize: Josh Garden was an amazing offseason pick up by the Outlaws. If your opponent has him in fantasy football, I pity you.
