Expansion GMs Announcement and Details - ErMurazor - 07-05-2017

So essentially, if we're a FA after one season, its a big F*ck you you're going to an Expansion Team no matter what?

BC the old team wouldn't protect me if I was leaving and the new team couldn't protect me bc im not signed. So essentially I resign and get protected, or go to an expansion team. That's not fun.

Congrats to the two GM's...

Legion and a Philadelphia team remind me A LOT of the WFL.

You almost want free agency to start before the expansion draft, then the players with expiring contracts could work out a deal with a new team and that team could protect them for the expansion draft.

Ya that's weird. Free agents are free agents. Expansion teams should hold no rights to those players.

Yeah, that's better then just saying screw your goals for next season? I mean to take guys who planned on being able to choose where they played and say nah is kinda rude in my opinion.

All of these topics were posted well before in the GM area. It's a shame nobody saw this side of it

This may be a better idea, we COULD just flip the two dates, that's not a big deal. We discussed all the rules in the announcement in the GM area but nobody caught this angle of it.

Even as an expansion GM, I agree with Shaka. Not fair to those players, they signed a 1-year deal on purpose. This shouldn't screw them out of it.

With that being said, I think expansion GMs should be able to negotiate with any upcoming FAs that are left unprotected prior to drafting them. I don't want to draft a guy, then him leave for free agency before I can even talk to him.

We could also simply remove the part about expansion teams auto matching the deal. That way expansion GMs would know the risk of taking a player with an expired deal in the draft, but would still get a couple days before the rest of the league to try and sign that player.

@youngcricket

If free agency starts before the draft, wouldn't that change protections? Teams would have to sign a guy, then protect him and leave another player unprotected.

I think I prefer just changing it to this

If players contract expires at the end of S1 they are still eligible to be placed in the expansion draft. The expansion team that chooses them will be allowed to negotiate a contract before free agency and if a deal is not agreed upon the team will have the right to match any accepted free agency offer for that player. If the expansion team matches a contract the player has agreed to with another team the expansion team gets the player with the agreed upon contract.

Expansion GMs would know the risk if they take one of these guys, but would still get time to negotiate a deal before the rest of the league

This is what I thought it was going to be, and I think the best solution. As long as Expansion teams are free to talk contract extensions with unprotected upcoming FAs before the draft.

Thurs: (7/13): Expansion Protections Announced
Fri: (7/14): Expansion Draft (expansion teams have from now until FA opens to sign any players they chose that have expiring contracts)
Mon (7/17): Free Agency opens

You would have from the expansion draft until free agency to talk extensions and signings with upcoming FAs that you selected in the draft. It wouldn't be fair to give you negotiation rights to every FA out there and there would be zero reason for either of you to select them either.
