In the offseason of S30 Heinrich Kackpoo called up Michael Witheblock to ask him about a topic that was on his mind for a few days. He wanted him to join him in leading a workshop in their home country. The austrian football team was preparing for the World Football Championships and there was a ton of work to do to be perfectly prepared. The knowledge about football was already very good, but they still needed fine tuning especially on the defensive side of the ball. Who would be better at teaching them the ins and outs of defensive concepts, than two of the best linebackers the ISFL has to offer. Physically the guys looked to be in football shape. They did good at preparing their bodies for that dangerous and tough game. BUt they were lacking tactical discipline. The whole week they trained recognizing looks and analyzing tendencies of opposing offenses. Sure, it was hard work. The players weren't used to spend that much time in the film room and then execute the things they learned on the field. But they tried their best and showed big improvements. With Witheblock and Kackpoo leading their defense in the upcoming Championships their defense should be a tough one to hang points on.

There’s two routes that the Chicago Butchers could go with this. We could send someone that we think will do a good job, or we could send somebody that would be hilarious to watch in this scenario. I think that, for the benefit of the people who asked for help, we should send someone that will do a great job. With this being the case, I think that it’s a no brainer to send one of our most cultured players, who we actually just reacquired this offseason - Hamish MacAndrew! We call him the most interesting man in the ISFL. Any hobby that you can think of, he’s probably tried it at least once, or might even be an expert in it. He’s never mentioned this, but I have a feeling that he probably speaks like 19 languages. Let’s go ahead and say that the international football team that wanted some pointers are from Mongolia. Why Mongolia, you ask? Well, that’s because MacAndrew actually drove all the way from Europe to Mongolia. Yes, that is a real thing that Ithica Hawk has done in real life. So with all of that being said, I don’t know if there are more than a few other people in the league that are more well equipped to teach a Mongolian football team how to football as well as possible.

As a member of the  MIN the Grey Ducks sent several players overseas, myself included (mostly because they forgot I was on the team). I was given the opportunity to go to New Guinea, to speak on the matter of never giving up as well as helping support the community through building a school and renovating several of the homes in the area. I was selected as I was a full back, and the whole point of the full back on the team is to support the running back with key blocks in the run game, as well as a last option in the passing attack. I was sent to New Guinea because my jersey sales mainly come through being sold in the area (97% of my jerseys sold were in New Guinea). To be a good full back, one must be reliable, and as such that was how we decided to build the new school: to be a reliable area for children to better themselves, and in term their team or community. My moment of inspiration, or the TED talk I had on never giving up was created as I am one of the few undrafted individuals in ISFL history to return and begin an actual career. It is quite difficult for one to be a part of this group, to be passed on as many times as I was. To sit and wait for your name to be called and not heard during a draft was difficult, but alas I was able to continue and get signed by the  SAR . It's that mindset I wanted to bring to New Guinea and to the group. I was able to make several friends and contacts through my time there in the early parts of the offseason. And as a special treat, we are flying them all out for our matchup against the Tijuana Luchadores later this season! Overall, the experience allowed me to share my story, as well as provide a place to be able to provide the support in a new foundation and I cannot thank the Grey Ducks and the Sailfish for this opportunity.

When the Honolulu Hahalua got a request from Canada to send a LB to help out with a football camp, they immediately had a couple of ideas. Of course they considered Guy Fields, however he was getting really old. They needed to send someone who could talk the kids up and really teach them the fundamentals. They ended deciding to send the new guy, Hex Aqua'Key-Kiann. They know HAKK has such a way with words, even though he wasn't the best of players. When HAKK arrived, he immediately froze like a popsicle. They needed to set him on fire to get his temp normal. Other than that set-back, the camp was amazing. He got to meet many Canadian football fans and have good in-depth conversations with them. HAKK never knew them Canadian boys are some head hunters! He had to teach them how to hit hard but also hit safely. HAKK wanted to teach them a couple of tips on how to get off blocks on the pass rush, despite HAKK having NO sacks his rookie DSFL season. Rather, he was asked a lot on pass coverage, considering his amount of pass deflections. While this secretly irked him, he went with it so he could improve the game of the young prospects. When HAKK returned, he returned with gallons of maple syrup from the Canadians!

Among the many places asking for a workshop, one stood out. There was a plan for one in Japan, and Hououin Kyouma jumped on the opportunity to return to his home for a bit to help out. With permission from the head office, Kyouma made the trip back to his hometown of Akihabara and met with his former college coaches to teach the incoming classes.

Kyouma had prepared drills that he had to do during his time in Norfolk to prepare the college athletes for what it would be like to play on a professional team. He also showed game film from the Ultimus and pointed out flaws made by both the Silverbacks and the Fire Salamanders. Each day was roughly similar, with two hours of film study followed by a two to three hour practice. At the end of the week, Kyouma joined the college students to partake in scrimmages. Each and every day they had a wrap up where Kyouma would point out big mistakes made during the drills.

When Japanese media approached Kyouma about the experience, he was ecstatic. "[The] opportunity for me to come and help a new generation of Japanese athletes is an honor. I hope some of [them] are able to come and play alongside or against me in the American league someday! It will be a very exciting time."

When I heard Portland was putting together an international football outreach group as a part of the ISFL Football International program, I knew I had to jump on the opportunity as soon as possible. Before going to BYU, I spent my two year mission in Bolivia and had used football as a way to connect with the kids in the local church. I was even more excited when it was announced the Pythons would be sending their outreach group to Argentina. Not only was I getting a chance to return to South America and spread football as a method of cultural outreach, my younger brother was also going to be in Argentina for his mission as well. My teammates and I partnered with my brother, Taulia, to sponsor several football camps across the country. Calvin Hobbes and Tay Swizzle helped run the offensive side of the ball while Jay Spears and I helped with the defensive side of the ball. We placed a big focus on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and safety. On the defensive side of the ball, the drill we ran the most was the rugby style tackle to prevent heads from getting knocked around more than necessary. Overall, it was a wonderful opportunity to spread the sport overseas and to connect with a different culture in a new and meaningful way. If the same opportunity comes up next offseason, whether it be a repeat trip to Argentina or to a different country all together, I would gladly join the effort once again.

The team I am on has a distinct advantage because we are already a country outside of the United States. This said, we do not have to travel as far to find a country that does not play American football regularly. There is one country that I have an eye on. That would be because not only would we be introducing them to the sport of American football, but I also think they will have some potential to be great football players. That country would be Japan. I think we could draft a lot of interest to our workshops, and I think it would be rather easy to help convert the drills they run now for sumo wrestling into that of blocking offensive linemen, except it’s a one-on-one drill instead of a 4 other dudes along side the one. We would bring one player and one coach from each position so we have at least 1 player to demonstrate the workshop and drills , and the coach to run the workshop and document names and important information. We have something called the World Football Championships coming up next off-season so bring along enough personnel is going to be crucial to getting the workshop and players together in order to produce some players that may be able to help win some games during the WFC and International Simulation Football League.
