(S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - adam2552 - 04-06-2018 The biggest bust in NSFL is Lincoln Jefferson. He was originally drafted by the Arizona Outlaws in the inaugural S1 draft. The Outlaws drafted him in the fourth round, nineteenth overall. Lincoln Jefferson entered the league as a WR and found great success at the position. He was even a key member of the team as they won their first Ultimis Championship at the end of S1. However, he's a bust because of what happened next. Lincoln Jefferson had his sights set higher, and left the Outlaws to become a founding member of the Philadelphia Liberty. The Outlaws got nothing in return for losing Lincoln Jefferson. Lincoln Jefferson converted to safety to be a better fit in Philadelphia. He played several forgettable seasons in Philadelphia. Teammates and everyone around Lincoln Jefferson began to see that his heart was no longer in the sport though. After the Liberty traded Jefferson back to the Arizona Outlaws, Jefferson announced his retirement. Spurning the team that drafted him in S1 yet again. The Arizona Outlaws ended up subsequently trading Lincoln Jefferson to the San Jose Sabercats where the safety ended his career and faded into obscurity as nothing more than a footnote in NSFL history. (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - Daybe - 04-06-2018 The biggest bust is 100% that Ryan Applewhore scrub. First of all, the name. Applehort? I could make a million different roasts for that: Applewhore, Applehoe, Appleabort, Applehurt. The kid is a scrub. Coming from a non power five conference and team like Houston, of course his stats were inflated going into the draft. Then, in the DSFL, he proved us all why he deserved bust status - again by posting arguably the worst stat line in the DSFL among quarterbacks. He was benched to a guy who’s less consistent than Klay Thompson, guys. Yet he was still regarded an elite prospect by most executives. The execs busted too. Just to add on to the disappointment, Applewhore had an god to awful combine which included one of the slowest 40s (5.25), and 2(!!!) bench reps. If this man gets hit by a Miami breeze he’s going to break his collarbone and pull an RGIII. What could GMs see in this kid? Great arm? He couldn’t hit an ice cream truck from 5 feet away. Great decision making? Doesn’t explain why the kid went to a small school like Houston, instead of a handful of power 5 Texas colleges, where he could actually prove himself up against real competition, such as TU, TAM, TTU, and more. The biggest and worst part about this was when the Yeti used a first rounder on him. A first rounder for this bum? I thought it was an early April’s Fools joke when I saw the pick come in, to be honest. But it wasn’t a joke, and it’s not funny. (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - CDub2 - 04-06-2018 This one will make me sad, but the biggest bust in recent memory has to be my old teammate John Wachter. He was an awesome guy, passionate member of the site, did everything right. He came out of nowhere in the DSFL draft and was snagged up early. He continued that energy throughout the DSFL season with the Portland Pythons and won the receiving triple crown. Something that hasn't been accomplished since. Then, as with all impact players with a good attitude, he was drafted 3rd overall to the Baltimore Hawks in S5. Then life got in the way. And he hasn't updated since the start of 2018. It's sad, but that the way it goes sometimes. There are more important things in life than this site. I can't wait until he comes back because he was an awesome teammate and a great asset for the site. Other busts on this post have been good, but few have been taken with such a high draft pick in such a strong draft. The S5 draft was a really strong draft, so to only get a 290 TPE inactive out of the 3rd overall pick is a tough pill to swallow for the Hawks. Not complaining since they are a division rival, but still sucks to lose a member of the site. 222 Words (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - RedCydranth - 04-07-2018 Every year there are a lot of promising faces that look great at their pro days and at the combine. But a stark reality is, for every Peyton Manning, there's a Ryan Leaf. For every Cam Newton, there's a Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder. In the NSFL, drafts are just as much of a gamble as in the NFL. In Season 4, the Otters drafted a player and then traded him away, ultimately obtaining TE Steven O'Sullivan, the brother of Otters LB Julian O'Sullivan. He was immediately given the nickname "Bro'Sullivan" and the team even shifted TE standout George Wright onto the defense to make room for him on the field of play. But, Bro'Sullivan had a rough rookie year and never really put up big numbers that are expected from that 1st draft pick. One could argue that his S6 stat line of 569 yards and 4 TDs isn't terrible, but if you really look at the production that OC has gotten from first round picks, somehow Stephen is on the bottom of the list. An argument could be made for the first overall pick in the Season 1 draft, J.J. Reigns as the biggest OC bust of all time, but even as an inactive he continued to help the team for many seasons. (218 words) (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - Zoone16 - 04-07-2018 Have you heard of the story of Josh “The Reason” Bercovici? It is a tale of high expectations, a massive contract and an equally massive disappointment. Drafted by the Orange County Otters 96th overall in the inaugural NSFL Draft, it was clear from day one that he would not share his game time with future hall of famer Mike Boss, who was picked 48th overall. Bercovici was left sitting on the bench as Fast forward one season later, Bercovici was going to the Las Vegas Legion on what was the biggest contract signed by any player yet. How would the NSFL’s bad boy do in the city of sin? Well not that great as he led the league in interceptions and the smallest number of passes and yards thrown in the league. S2 was also the year that was an expansion so there was some leeway as the team was still figuring out a direction. Things did not improve in Season 3 and 4, resulting in what was arguably the biggest QB bust in NSFL history. All this money spent, all these hopes. Bercovici would retire at the end of S4, replaced by Logan Noble. Bercovici had advertised himself as the ‘bad’ boy of the NSFL. It turns out he was true but not in the way he thought it would be. When this guy came into the league, he took the DSFL by storm. He was gaining huge amounts of TPE, writing tons of media, and being super active. Then he got drafted and it was like he just became inactive for some reason. I dont understand why, and I dont think anyone else does. It might just be a case of a guy getting burned out, or just not having fun being the league anymore. It always sucks having someone like him, a young high tpe active, go inactive but that happens sometimes. Some times they come back, whether that be with the same character, or with a recreate. Hell Leafer had a former player that he went inactive with and now he's back and is a max tpe earner. Same with me. I was super inactive with Asipi Sr, and while I've calmed down a little bit, I still earn a lot of tpe with Asipi Jr. I really hope Gore comes back, but at this point if he hasn't already I really doubt he will in the future. Im sure the league would be better off. Come back please borro. We know you used to love it here. (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - AzhekAhriman - 04-07-2018 I don’t know if this is truly the biggest bust in the NSFL but it is one that hits close to home for me and my teammates on the Yellowknife Wraiths. I’m talking of course, about Borro Gore, the bruising RB that the Wraiths took at the bottom of the first round last year. Gore was a very good earner for the DSFL almost-champion Portland Pythons and was the consensus 1st RB off the board in everyone’s mockdraft and the real draft as well. Gore and Rainey were slotted to battle it out for the starting tailback spot after Kennedy moved to WR full time but it was never meant to be. While both players put up very good stats in the DSFL last season Gore has fallen off the radar shortly after hitting the DSFL playing cap of 249 TPE. Whether it was a lack of incentive to keep at it in the face of the cap, real world constraints or something else entirely we may never know, but we do know that Gore has been at 249 for quite a while now and appears to be firmly IA for the foreseeable future. I looked forward to competing with a helluva player for the starting job and forming a two-headed rushing attack the league would be afraid of with Borro, so like I said this one hits close to home a little... Code: Word Count: 233 (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - nunccoepi - 04-07-2018 I was hesitant to complete this PT because I am new to the league and thus am not yet very familiar with the various draft strategies, consequences, and outcomes. So, although I know that there are other far more egregious draft busts out there, at the risk of offending the player (should he ever read this PT) I decided to write on a situation that has personally affected me in some way: Sam Penner. Sam Penner was selected #3 overall by the Tijuana Luchadores in the S6 DSFL draft, and was the first QB off the board (even going before Applehort and McCoy). We've discussed before that the draft class was rather weak in some areas (in fact all of Tijuana's picks from the draft have already gone inactive which is a draft bust situation in itself), but Penner would have seemed like a safe pick at the time given the way that burst on to the scene in a flurry of activity, taking on league roles and breathing some life into a Luchadores team that saw itself largely depleted after losing many great players to the NSFL the year before. Unfortunately, as we all know, Pens overzealous nature may have lead to his downfall. In what was clearly a lapse of judgment, Pens edited the player pages for more than a dozen users. Despite what was likely the best of intentions and relatively minor editing, the HO HAMMER fell hard, and the fledgeling QB was demoralized. This led to a period of resentment and inactivity for the potential star who continued to start for the Luchadores. We may never know what the DSFL playoffs could have looked like if Tijuana QB had been able to live up to his true potential. Nevertheless, as a co-GM for the Tijuana Luchadores, I will note that the state of affairs is bright south of the border as we have a QB has proven he has the potential to overshadow all of the broken Penner expectations. (333) (S7) - PT 1 - Biggest Busts - Bzerkap - 04-07-2018 Wanna talk busts? The Wraiths know busts. Just ask our S3 draft class. Oh wait you can’t, they’re all gone. Disappeared from the forum, discord, our hearts and our minds. 1st round pick Brice Boggs - Daybe, was traded before the season even started in an attempt to win now. Boggs subsequently retired and has now recreated as Applehort, the QB. Total bust. 2nd round pick Francois Lameroux - Archon, was a decent earner and had a short stint as Co-GM and played a position of need, OL. Well, he just up and left the site one day, siting IRL issues and hasn’t really been heard from since. I think he lasted only one season. Sad. Bust. 2nd round pick Eidur Gustavsson - Kris, seemed to be really into it and a good earner, then said the dots and sim really made him hate the league. Couldn’t get back into it after he saw the truth and left. Bust. 4th round pick Ryan Fitzfatrick - runrunpasspunt, was a slow earner for two seasons then just up and left, no word. I guess you can’t expect much in the 4th, but bust. 4th round pick Joseph Askins - jaskins811, not a bust. A steal. Surprising. We drafted Pierno but immediately traded him. Actually a decent earner but never played for us. The Season 3 Wraiths Draft is a confirmed bust |
