(S14) PT 3 - Expansion - TomHanks - 04-10-2019 The Edinburgh Tartan is a potential NSFL expansion franchise located in beautiful Edinburgh. The concept of a British gridiron football team is not a new one, however most of the focus goes to the largest city in the United Kingdom, London. To challenge that, I’d like to put forward the fact that gridiron football would fit the culture of Scotland far better than England. Even their soccer teams are far more physical, and they’re passionate as all hell about rugby. Due to this, the largest city in Scotland, Edinburgh, would make a fantastic location for a new franchise. The stadium is already in place, Murrayfield, and the British government has voiced heavy support for a team to be founded in the UK. Tartan historically represents Scotland to a lot of people, and creating a custom one would allow the team to become their own Clan. This family mentality would be crucial to a team so far away from the rest of the league. While distance could be an issue, the benefits of bringing in fans from all over the UK more than make up for the risks associated with it. Colour scheme wise, the tartan would be made up of red and blues. The tartan itself would only be on the helmet and as very thin stripes down the white uniform pants, while the jersey would be red with blue detailing taken from the colour scheme. As an away jersey, white with blue numbers and red detailing, with black pants with the tartan stripes down the side. Tartan could also be incorporated into the cleats. The mascot would be a very Scottish looking guy, complete with a kilt, tam o' shanter, and a sporran. This is an ambitious undertaking, but breaking into the European market would be massive for the league, and the location that would garner the most dedicated fans is Edinburgh. Now I know what most of you are thinking. Why choose a defunct team that move out of Las Vegas to New Orleans to become the Second Line? Easy, this decision comes while pondering the leagues rich history and the Legion’s inability to be properly managed from the beginning causing a total collapse. The team never got to fulfill its destiny as the Legion. The Second Line were able to turn things around after the stigma of being part of the Legion was washed away. Near the middle (if you can call it that, it was short lived) of its tenure in the league there was a “walkout” of sorts. High profile players left the team and just retired simply to not play there anymore. The absence of a true GM (who was out of the country at the time if I recall correctly) really hindered the growth and stability of the team. I think there should be a revitalization of the greatness that could have been Las Vegas and would love to see what a new GM and new players could do there. So here we go, Let’s go Las Vegas Legion and and march on to the Ultimus! While the league already has a franchise in Yellowknife, the province of Saskatchewan is football hotbed that the league could capitalize on. The obvious location for the team would be the province's largest city of Saskatoon. As a province Saskatchewan is rich in football support with the large fan base held by their CFL franchise in Regina. The name of the Saskatoon team would be the RiverRiders. This would pay homage to the South Saskatchewan River that runs through the city. The team would feature a colour scheme of Blue and Green to represent the land and water. The team's mascot would be a frog. A frog can live in both the water and on land therefore making it a perfect choice. The team would play out of the University of Saskatchewan stadium to allow for play to begin immediately. The stadium could renamed Riverbed Stadium and provide 100% eco-friendly. Located in Saskatchewan where activities are fairly limited to begin with, the team should not experience any difficulty attracting fans to games. While the franchise may struggle to attract players, they should be able to thrive economically in this rich football market. (S14) PT 3 - Expansion - Bigred1580 - 04-11-2019 First off, I am so excited for expansion! I think this is a great opportunity to reshape the league and really mix up the teams. As far as the geography of the league, I love how the DSFL is lined up with 6 teams evenly spaced north, south, and east, central, west. I know this is a fictional league, but the even distribution helps players feel closer to a particular franchise. Which is why with one of the two, I would like a team to be outside of the US and Canada. Give the other countries a team to cheer for. But for my team, I am going to choose the most underrepresented region in our league, the midwest. We have teams in the south (NOLA), east coast (SJS, OCO, ARI), mountains (ARI), Canada (YK), and northeast (BAL, PHI). For my franchise I choose the Minneapolis Snowplows! Maybe it is because it is April and we just got another snow storm, but these Snowplows are always working to clear the way. Our colors would be White, with a touch of black for the roads and light blue for the ice melt. It would be the inverse of Yellowknife’s primary colors. We would play in TCF bank stadium in Minneapolis, that's right, get out of here St. Paul, and no dome for us, we can handle it. Our mascot would be a snowplow, driven by one of our city workers, and we would just call it The Snowplow. Man, I’m depressed with the snow right now. (S14) PT 3 - Expansion - Eco - 04-11-2019 Since this is a fictional league and there is nothing stopping us logistically, I am going to suggest a team in my home country. Allow me to introduce to you the new expansion team, Istanbul Wolves. Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, with a population over 15 million. It lies between Europe and Asia, connecting them via three bridges. The primary color of the team is going to be dark blue, representing the Bosporus that splits the city into two continents. The team mascot is going to be a wolf which is our national animal. Turkic mythology has a lot of references to grey wolves, telling stories about how they led our ancestors to Anatolia. Therefore the secondary color of the team is going to be grey. The team logo will incorporate these elements, showcasing a grey wolf over a bridge (one of the three bridges that is over the Bosphorus). The city already has 4 large soccer stadiums that the team can play at while a new stadium is built. This new stadium is going to be named Asena Arena, which is the name of a famous she-wolf from Turkic mythology. This new team will hopefully help grow the football scene in Turkey, which is a tough job since soccer is pretty dominant all across Europe. |
