(S4) - Ultimus Week - ralams123 - 12-10-2017 Robbed This year for their first time in team history the Baltimore Hawks did not qualify to make the playoffs. After starting out the season Five and O (Counting Preseason) the hawks looked poised for another playoff berth they proceeded to lose one game then go on another big win streak of Four games even giving the Outlaws their first loss of the season. Sitting at Five and Two at the midseason point the Hawks were at the top of the NSFC preparing for the playoffs. After a week 8 win against Orange County the Hawks were cursed by the sim gods and went full Kansas City losing two straight games tying up with the Wraiths and only one game ahead of the Liberty who were looking to reach the playoffs for the first time. After a week eleven win the Hawks for sure were going to the playoffs but in full Kansas fashion the Hawks lost three straight games while the liberty did the opposite and won three straight. With both teams at Seven and Seven the team chosen to go to the playoffs was based off of who had the best conference record with the Liberty with a perfect Six and O NSFC record they overtook the Hawks as members of the playoffs robbing them of a chance to MAYBE go to the Ultimus (226 Words) That Magic Moment Honestly the whole Otters v Outlaws (post re sim) match was magical for us Otters players. For most of the game it was close with each team trading points, The Outlaws had the lead by the beginning of the fourth and us Otters were getting ready to trample the HO if we lost in the re sim. With ten minutes left in the fourth quarter Mike Boss did what truebosses do and lead us on a drive with the confidence to know that we were going to come out with the win. With some beautiful passes and a couple penalties we moved in to the red zone, one pass moved us onto the 1 and this is where the magic happens. Leroy Jenkins the old man going through his year long retirement party threw away his rocker for a play to remember taking the ball up the gut Leroy pushed through to score the game winning touchdown. With a failed two point conversion the Otters defense turned up with a goal line stand stopping them from converting on fourth down, with two minutes left the Otters ran out the clock and did what was seemed to be the impossible after three seasons. The Otters won an away playoffs game and stopped the reign of the Outlaws and their three year dominance. (224 Words) [div align=\\\"center\\\"]Going to Disneyland[/div] Many people would say that Mike Boss is the deserving MVP of the Ultimus but since everyone is probably going to say that I am voting for Bradley Westfield for Ultimus MVP. After Bradley brought the Ultimus back to Orange County him and the rest of team active and inactive on a private jet ride to the OG Disney, Disney World. Once we set foot in Disney we all turned into 200 pound kids running around laughing and having a good time at the park. Going on every ride the Otters sure did celebrate in high spirits. Fans everywhere asking for autographs all day made it even better and after getting too lit the players were kicked out of the park near closing times. The players took a party limo back to the hotel where they threw a party on the whole floor that was threatened to be shut down multiple times. I would explain the party but after midnight everything went black and I woke up to a mean hangover, a lot of the players had the same problem as well. The team had flown back to Orange County in the afternoon to get back to their regular offseason training around the world to come back and win the Ultimus again next year. (Words 217) (S4) - Ultimus Week - Aenir - 12-10-2017 Written Points Robbed: Write about why a team that failed to make the playoffs should have over somebody else. Can be completed at any point It’s very tough to make this sort of call, but I think the correct call for the playoffs is to have San Jose in, and the Philadelphia Liberty out. Many people say that the divisions made it happen, but I say with the schedule that the NSFL uses (Balanced, everyone plays everyone an equal amount) divisions have no purpose. It should be the top 4 teams playing, which this season would mean (In Seed Order: 1) Outlaws 2) Otters on Tiebreaker over San Jose 3) San Jose 4) Wraiths. This makes a pair of great games in the opening round and the winners would fight in the Ultimus, being truly worthy of their seeding and positions as opposed to being the beneficiary of a weak conference and limping into the playoffs (7-7 should not be a playoff team in a football league) As Far as predictions go, I would say Outlaws win vs Wraiths, and San Jose beats Otters, which means Outlaws vs Sabercats for the Ultimus, which of course leads to a San Jose win, this would hopefully also help the update issues and mean there should be less issues with sims and commentary! Sabercats for the repeat in s5 as well! (you heard it here first!) (208) New Talent: Write about which S4 trade will or did have the biggest impact in the playoffs. Can be written at any time depending on if you choose to write about who already has or who will do good I think the biggest S4 trade that will affect playoffs to come is the Trade of QB Chris Orosz from the Wraiths to the Sabercats. It was a big shake up the likes of which hadn’t been seen in the league since early in its existence. It brought the Sabercats to the brink of a playoff appearance and but for some unlucky bounces (Home loss to Baltimore mainly comes to mind) could have made their first appearance and knocked the Ultimus winning Otters out of contention. Also included in the trade were FS Alex Hansen going to San Jose. With Former QB Ethan Hunt (now Gosh Jarden-WR) and Safety Clee Hardrool, going out to Yellowknife. Also moving were some draft picks. These moves have helped both squads, with Yellowknife making the Ultimus in a “Rebuilding” year and as mentioned, Bringing San Jose to Playoff contention only to lose out on a tie breaker, a rough go for any franchise. Obviously it is unknown as to the totality of the trade because until the draft picks are chosen and begin play it can only be incomplete. Overall even though its an incomplete grade, thus far one might have to say that Yellowknife has won the deal, due to the trade and the moves made because of it, they get an Ultimus appearance and San Jose just (barely) missed the playoffs again. (230) Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the matchups. Must be completed after the Championship Game The playoffs were an interesting bunch, with The Otters jumping out to a 21-0 lead…Scratch that, it was only a “POTENTIAL FUTURE”. But the Otters did come away with the win vs the NSFL dynasty, Arizona Outlaws, IN Arizona, a crazy shock if NSFL fans have ever seen one. The memes can cease, the king is dead, etc. In the other conference the Wraiths were able to put away an exceptionally tough Liberty team that by all accounts shouldn’t have even been in the situation they were in, getting in at 7-7 but putting on an exceptionally tough performance that just came up short in the end. The Ultimus was another good game, ending 30-23, doubling breaking a couple of traditions that were 3 seasons in the making. Such as the traditions of Arizona winning, and the Ultimus being a huge blow-out game. However the tradition of the ASFC winning is alive and well in hand in the NSFL. It is somewhat frustrating as a fan to come into the game knowing that the NSFC team is behind the 8 ball to start with. However this Ultimus was a game that was a fun watch (even without commentary) I just have to say overall s4 was a good season overall. (210) Hate the player or the game: Tell us which team made the playoffs and shouldn't have, or which team didn't and should have? (Can be completed at any point) As mentioned above, I think the Liberty shouldn’t have made the playoffs and the Sabercats should have made it in. The Liberty were at a -85 point differential with a .500 record while the Sabercats had +109 point differential along with a 9-5 record, missing out on the playoffs by 48 points, which in this league is one good game vs the Yeti or Legion. Now I can understand the mantra of you can only control what goes on in front of you inbetween the lines, but it is very frustrating when you handle your business but due to the alignment your business has to be so much heavier than other people’s. That is neither here nor there, because onto the topic, The Sabercats should be in, and the league should be organized into one large 8 team division, as with such a balanced schedule it doesn’t matter if you are in one conference or another, as long as you take care of the business in front of you, in the one 8 team division this would lead to the best teams making the playoffs and increasing the quality of the games as well as keeping the playoffs something to look forward to at the end of the year (209) (S4) - Ultimus Week - HalfEatenOnionBagel - 12-11-2017 Playoff Review NSFC Championship: Although the Wraiths were a surprise as the regular season NSFC Champions, they showed why they earned it in this game. The big story of the game was the play of the two quarterbacks. Rove played ok and along with the Liberty defense was able to take the game to overtime but Akselsen took over for the Wraiths in overtime and threw the game winning touchdown and finished the day with a 123.4 rating. ASFC Championship: In what is usually just a stepping stone to another Ultimus title for the Outlaws, the Otters flipped the script and buried the Outlaws in this one. Mike Boss and the entire offense were clicking as they put up 27 points against a usually stout Outlaws defense. Ultimus Championship: Finally, finally we get a competitive game in the championship for once after three years of pretty lopsided matchups. You have to think that the impact of Oline bots as well as just as less disparity between teams in the league overall as we go along contributed to this and just the way the season went in general. Anyways, the Otters jumped out to an early lead in this one with two huge plays by Westfield. But, the Wraiths battled back and came within one score, aided by Boss throwing a couple of interceptions. Alas, when the Wraiths needed a big play most they ran out of gas and the Otters ran out the clock on the way to their first ever NSFL Championship. And who else but Mike Boss had to be the MVP in this one, throwing for a ridiculous 439 yards. Championship Game Recap The biggest play of the Ultimus Game had to be the sack in the fourth quarter by Gregor Clegane. Unlike previous Ultimus games, this one was close down to the wire and the Wraiths had a chance to make a drive late in the game to tie it up and potentially go to overtime. But, Clegane was able to break through the line and Chase down the rather elusive Akselsen for the sack. This play put the Wraiths in an extremely difficult position to get a first down and keep their hopes alive in the game. Eventually the Wraiths failed to convert on fourth down and would not have enough time to come back in the game. In a game like this you have to pull out all the stops, but when you're in such terrible field position and such an unmanageable down and distance, it can wipe out a lot of potential plays that you might have in your playbook. Although the Otters almost blew it at the end of the game with a very untimely fumble, all the momentum that the Wraiths may have had was drained by this sack on a key play. The Otters are surely thankful for the play of Clegane both in this game and for the season after his transition from being an offensive lineman. He has really stepped up big to make the switch, get in shape and learn a completely new skillset. Ultimus MVP This seasons MVP of the entire playoffs has to be Mike Boss. After a tumultuous rookie season when their was still a huge quarterback controversy in OC, Boss emerged as the starter for the Otters and hasn't looked back. Despite ridicule after a season plagued with interceptions, Boss really broke out in S3 and has consistently proven himself to be the best quarterback in the league. And this year, he and the Otters finally got the monkey off their back by beating the Outlaws in the playoffs and then bringing home the Ultimus. Boss put together two fantastic performances and his role as the unquestioned leader of the fantastic Otters offense was critical to their success. In the ASFC Championship game, Boss was slinging it against a typically stout Outlaws defense, finishing with three touchdown passes and a rating of 109.5. Then in the Ultimus Game, he came out again hot. Despite a couple if interceptions, Boss absolutely carved up the Wraiths defense by passing for a whopping 439 yards and another three touchdowns. His performance in the playoffs this year and what he has done for the Otters franchise will not soon be forgotten. It's not hard to believe that Boss could easily bring the Otters back to the Ultimus game again next season and lead them to victory once again. Interview With a Fan Today we're interviewing Rufus Thycalheim, a fan of the Philadelphia Liberty. Hi Rufus thanks for talking to us. Always good to get a Fan's perspective. Yeah, totally I agree, man. One hundred percent, so go get a good fan for that interview for sure. No, Rufus, we're interviewing you. Right now. Aww what, nice. How much do I get paid for this? Uh, nothing but you do get to see this on TV eventually so there's that. Have you-have you been drinking Rufus? I mean yeah of course, I've been drinking since Liberty lost in the playoffs. Well a couple weeks of drinking isn't too bad I suppose. Nah, man I've been drinking since they lost last year. Damn, Rufus, it's just a game you need some help. Just a game? Isn't watching and talking about the NSFL your job? Well uh yes, but- Excuse me, I'm conducting this interview, please let me finish what I was saying. Now where was I? Um well yes so how do you feel about the team? Wait what, which team? The Philadelphia Liberty of course, that's what this whole interview was about was it not? What do you think are their chances of finally making it to the big game. (Proceeds to take a drink from a flask he takes out if his pocket) (Stands up quickly) That's it we're done here, cut the taping. This is the last time we interview a fan. And I thought some of these players were fucking annoying.... By stroke of luck, three different teams in the ASFC ended up with the best records in the league, yet per league rules only two teams from each division ascend into the playoffs. This means by record, and record is the best method we have for divining which teams are the most talented, the first, second, fourth, and fifth best teams went into the playoffs. Who was left out? The Saber Cats of San Jose. The Saber Cats also had the distinction of achieving a record which tied with the eventual winner, the Otters of the Orange County, California. While simulations constantly showed the Orange County Otters as the higher percentage winner, the teams split the series, each one winning one game apiece. One interesting fact is the Saber Cats and the Otters actually played in the last week of the regular season, week fourteen. The Saber Cats won the game, twenty six to seventeen. The Saber Cats were of course at home, and during these teams week nine tilt the Otters thoroughly dominated the game, winning thirty nine to seven. A even head office would hope the league gains more parity for the future. words:211 Playoff Review: The Glacies Trophy The Glacies trophy game started off slowly, with each team taking long drives which resulted in punts or turnovers up and down the field before the liberty broke the game open with a twenty four yard touchdown reception by Paul DiMirio. The Wraiths responded with a long drive ending with a field goal, before the Liberty walked down the field in two plays for another touchdown, making the result somewhat surprising at fourteen to three Liberty. Each team traded punts before the Liberty scored a field goal to make it seventeen to three on a twelve play drive, where they recovered from a first and twenty five start and scored three different first downs. Seven punts bounced field position in the third quarter, a sack feast occurred. In the fourth quarter, the true miracle happened in the fourth quarter for the Wraiths. Down by fourteen, they finished off their thirteen play drive for a touchdown, notably without any penalties, turnovers (obviously) or in completions. Two plays later Dermot gave them an interception, which the Wraiths turned into an easy field goal. The Liberty drive stalled out after a sack and penalty, resulting in a Liberty field goal. Akselsen and Carl Rove were each sacked to kill their own drive, and the game went into overtime. A long Wraiths drive finished off the Wraiths game for a trip to the Ultimus. words:230 Championship game recap: The Ultimus game for the fourth season of the league started fairly slowly, but with two different big plays which netted the wraiths an average of thirty four yards, and formed the first drive of the game and jumped the wraiths up to a seven to zero lead over the Otters of Orange County. Each team traded punts, before the Otters recovered from a first play sack to march down the field eighty four yards for a touchdown to tie the game. J D Boom for the Otters scored a sack, fumble, and recovery to give the otters an easy field goal, before the Otters finally secured their second touchdown off an easy drive of fifty yards. Seventeen to seven, Otters. The Wraiths kept their second quarter drive alive for a field goal. Each team traded punts for field position to finish off the half. In the second half, Boss threw an interception, allowing the wraiths to net another field goal, before driving down the field in four plays with no incompletion for an otters touchdown. Following a Wraiths punt, the Otters put up a twelve play field goal drive which chewed up four minutes of the clock, followed by a quick Wraiths touchdown from Bubba Nuck was all the excitement this game could hold. The only scoring of the fourth quarter was a wraiths field goal, but they still came up short by a touchdown. words:236 Unsung Hero The Unsung Hero for this year's Ultimus game is fairly difficult to see on the stats sheet, but was a huge momentum turn for the eventual Ultimus Trophy Champions, JD Boom. Boom is a defensive end for the Otters, and while he only logged four total tackles in the game, he was fifth highest on the entire otters team. After the Otters tied the game up at seven following a first drive Wraiths touchdown, the Wraiths were driving the ball before Boom decided to make himself known on the field. While the sack would have been damaging for the Wraiths, pushing them back to a third and eighteen on their own eleven yard line, the fumble by Akselsen really sealed the game for the Otters. Thankfully for the Wraiths, their own defense rose to the challenge, deflecting two of Boss's throws to defend the touchdown, while the Otters had to settle for a short twenty eight yard field goal. This turnover was the only one for the Otters defense all season, and directly resulted in the Otters getting points on the scoreboard. While Angus Winchester looks much more of a star in the statistics guidebook, without JD Booms crucial sack fumble recovery, the Otters wouldn't have won this game. This was all the more memorable because of Boom's impending retirement, directly after the game. words:224 (S4) - Ultimus Week - bagwell - 12-12-2017 Robbed: Write about why a team that failed to make the playoffs should have over somebody else. Can be completed at any point From my limited time in the league and speaking with PDXBaller, it sounds like the Hawks were expected to continue making it to the NSFC playoffs this year, but ended up losing out even though they tied with the Philly Liberty with a 7-7 record. From looking at the index website, it seems like they were a better team on paper with better stats over the Liberty overall. They led in categories like points, total yards, points allowed, total yards against, and all offensive yards against. It looks like the Hawks were better when you compare starting players as well, but Philly beat them in both of their regular season games to get the tie breaker. The Hawks had a better quarterback and offensive lineman to go along with a great wide receiver group and a decent running back. It seems like a classic case where the inferior team on paper found a way to beat the better expected team with game planning and a little luck. I don’t think they will make a big recession next season since their core is mostly intact, but anything seems possible in this league as I’m learning. The Hawks should bounce back to be a playoff contender next season. -206 words -------------------------------------------- Playoff Series MVP: Choose an MVP for one of the playoff series and write about why you chose them. Must be completed after the playoff series you write about I’m a bit biased here since I know him in real life. PDXBaller’s player was Eli Kamaka this season and he had a great playoff series when his team played the Yellowknife team in the NSFC playoffs. They beat out the Hawks to make it to the playoffs. The Philly Liberty ended up losing 26-20, but PDXBaller’s player racked up a ton of stats for a defensive tackle. Usually these guys get lots of tackles if they stop the run game, but Eli Kamaka had 9 tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. That’s pretty huge in games! Like Trump huge! I ended up rewatching that game with him and I loved how he ended up stopping a few key plays against Yellowknife. There was a stop at the Philly 23 which ended in a Yellowknife field goal and he ended up shutting down some key runs against Eric Kennedy. To give you an idea, his other defensive tackle teammate only had 4 tackles and a tackle for loss and that guy has more experience than Eli Kamaka. Even though they lost, I think Eli Kamaka had a good game and was one of the best guys the Liberty had on defense. -206 words ----------------------------------------- Going to Disneyland!:Who was the Ultimus MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland. (Can be completed after the Ultimus game) The Ultimus Most Valuable Player of the game was easily Otters quarterback Mike Boss. I looked at previous seasons’ index websites and saw that he was easily the best quarterback in the league for awhile so this had to be a long time coming for him. Against Yellowknife, he was listed as the offensive player of the game and had 35 completions over 59 passing attempts, 439 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Even though he had 2 interceptions, it was not a big deal since they had a great first half with a 20-10 lead over Yellowknife. When Orange County won and beat Yellowknife 30-23, I am sure Mike Boss booked his trip to Disneyland immediately and took his family down to California for a short road trip. I’m not sure where the Otters play, but it can’t be that far from Anaheim! Boss does what Boss wants and he went on all the fun and best rides like the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, and even It’s a Small World. He probably spent about a week there with the family and then went back home to Orange County for some rest and relaxation since dealing with kids isn’t that relaxing. -201 words -------------------------------------- Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the matchups. Must be completed after the Championship Game NSFC Playoffs This game featured the best team in the NSFC with the Wraiths going in to the game with a 8-6 record and the second best team in the division with the Philly Liberty at a 7-7 record. Having won out the tie breaker over the Hawks, the Liberty made it to this matchup for the second year in a row. This was a close game that ended up going into overtime as both teams did a great job at moving the ball down the field and kicking the ball too. In the end, the Wraiths took it home in overtime with a touchdown from Bubba Nuck at 10:38. ASFC Playoffs The ASFC Playoffs featured the Otters and Outlaws meeting again for the fourth consecutive time. The Outlaws crushed the Otters every time, but this year was different. The Otters soundly defeated the Outlaws 27-9. You could argue that home field advantage didn’t even come into play based on the score. The Otters scored a touchdown and field goal in the first two quarters of the game and another touchdown in the third to seal the deal. With no good offense coming out of the Outlaws, they had no chance at winning this one. Ultimus The post season ended with a close game with the Wraiths hanging with the Otters for three quarters and doing the best they could. Otter’s offense was on fire and two of the best wide receivers in the league each caught a touchdown with Bradley Westfield actually catching two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Wraiths fought well and had a better defensive game for sure, but it’s hard to beat the best quarterback in the league. Ultimately, the Ultimus went to the Otters with a final score of 30-23. -296 words (S4) - Ultimus Week - DeathOnReddit - 12-12-2017 Interview with Mat Akselsen (@Bzerkap) What is it like to finally win a playoff game? It's really great to finally win a playoff game. I've been waiting four seasons for this day, and it comes in a rebuilding year no less. Maybe the low expectations allowed us all to cut loose and stop trying to live up to expectations. I don't really know, but I know it's the best feeling I've had on this site in a long time. I worked so hard, staying up late doing stupid test sims that don't matter sometimes, it just kind of feels like validation. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year, how did you do so well? I really don't know how we did so well. It's truly a mystery. We lost Garden, Aenir and Cushing, Kris has gone inactive, Archon disappeared, dangles has gone inactive, but we still have a great core of guys who try their hardest. We brought in Jarden and Ridley to round out our squad. I really think it was just a team effort with the actives we have on the team. Everyone has been really supportive and we have at least one key active at every area of the team. So I guess it was some sim luck, some hard work gaining TPE, some fun times in the LR, and a lot of karma lol. We finally got some luck our way with seasons of being super high TPE but disappointing results. Would you rather have faced the outlaws instead of the otters? To be honest I would have rather faced the Outlaws. I don't know why, but Boss just plain scares me as an opposing QB. He is truly the best passer in the league and he's got two top flight receivers. I also think the Otters were the stronger team overall this season, but sim luck screwed them a bit. It would be a tough matchup any way, but I would have rather faced the Outlaws. Are you looking to make any trades? We'll find out. It all depends on who is on the trade block, and who we think we want. Sit down with a fan. Must be completed after the Championship GameThe playoff in NSFL is a moment where the four best team of the league can show how good they actually are. In this fourth race for the Ultimus, two teams, from the same conference, appeared in the previous season in the playoff. This demonstrate how strong the Orange Country Otters and the Arizona Outlaws are, compared to the rest of their conference. These two teams are once again fighting for the Solis Trophy. From Season One to Season Three, the Solis was won by the Outlaws. However, for the first time in the league history, they were defeated in the AFSC championship and the Otters were on their way to the finals. In the other conference, the team reaching the Glacies Trophy are usually changing from seasons to seasons. This time, it was the Philadelphia Liberty and the Yellowknife Wraiths fighting for the ASFC title. The Liberty were on their second appearance in the playoff and the Wraiths at their third. The experience in playoff spoke louder and the Wraiths were the second team in the finals. None of them ever reached the final of the NSFL. The experience of the Otters in playoff and the fact they are one of the best team in the league helped them win the Ultimus trophy in the 4th season. 218 Words Quote:Conference Final MVP Sig: Make a sig for a player of your choice who you felt was the MVP of a Conference Final matchup. (Can be completed at any point) @BzerkapQ: The Wraith missed the playoff in Season 3 after being present in the first two seasons, how was the team locker room to be back into a playoff position in the fourth season ? Missing the playoffs in S3 was definitely a huge bummer for us. Mostly because we knew how talented we were. We had just as much talent if not more than the Outlaws across the board, but we were so inconsistent it was hard to accumulate any wins. S4 was really a blessing for us, and a bit of karmic Justice. We traded away a lot of talent and put an unproven guy at QB, but somehow we won. We definitely won some games we shouldn’t have, but that’s the karma I was talking about. The locker room has been talking about our ultimus game for days now. We’re still riding that high Q: The outlaws were eliminated by the Otters, meaning that you would not have to face the reigning champion, how were you feeling about this ? Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. We beat both teams during the regular season but I considered the Otters a stronger team throughout the season, so I didn’t want to face that juggernaut pass attack. But, I also really wanted to be the ones to stop the Outlaws reign of dominance. We never got that opportunity, so it was a bit disappointing. Q: It was a crushing defeat to see the Otters victorious and win the Ultimus Trophy. What went wrong during the game ? Not much really went wrong for us. We executed a good gameplan, but their offense was just so talented it was gonna take some mistakes on their side to give us a chance. However, both teams played solid, mistake-free ball and it just wasn’t enough for us. We’ll get them next year though. Don’t worry Q: What are your plan for the off seasons to continue to improve the team ? Well we’ve quickly run out of money with all of our FA signings and trades haha, but there may be a few more moves in store for us. We are still a bit weak at WR and 3rd LB so we are looking for those in the draft as well as any trade avenues |
