The Otters are on the cusp of yet another appearance in the Ultimus game, and yet a rebuild might be on the horizon. The team's core is comprised largely of older players and they won't last forever. Mike Boss is set to regress down to about 500 TPE, Bradley Westfield may dip below the century mark, Robert Phelps has been phased out as a primary target, and others - like Angus Winchester, Marc Spector, and Greg Clegane - will find their own setbacks coming in regression. The Otters have been steadfast in holding onto their draft picks in trade discussions, passing up a handful of opportunities to improve their chances at the trophy this season. With these players at the back end of their respective careers, perhaps the Otters should consider using some to retool with a strong incoming draft class. The team needs help at safety, defensive line, and quarterback. They will be able to pick up Gus TT Showbiz in the second round of the upcoming draft, but hitting with their first round pick will be vital. Players like Alexandre Thibault and Bucky Barnes could be hot targets for a team like the Otters and help the team reload rather than rebuild.

Going all in on a rebuild is never an easy thing. It's especially difficult when you're the reigning champs. Allow me to quickly sum up what the Liberty has lost and received from a purely draft stock point of view
From a trade with New Orleans, they gain a third round pick the S9 Draft, a second round pick in the S10 draft, and secure the better first round pick between Colorado and New Orleans. They lose a fourth round pick in the S9 draft.
In a trade with Baltimore they gain a S9 fourth round pick and a S10 third round pick.
From two trades with Colorado they gain a S9 third round pick, S10 first and second picks, and swap S9 first round picks.
From a trade with Yellowknife, they received a S10 second round pick.
To break all that down again, they will have seven new picks in the next two years. Two additional third round picks in S9, a first round pick in S10, three S10 second round picks, and one S10 third round pick. They were an aging them and got as much bang for their buck as they could before regression hit. With such an influx of youth you have to imagine this team being a force to be reckoned with when the draft picks develop in to the players they could be, however, I am still wondering if it was the right call. Coming off a championship year, poised to be a contender once again, turned in to a tear it all down and try again in a few years very quickly. Perhaps it was a a wisely thought out and prepared move, perhaps it was a knee jerk decision. In the end, we won't truly know how good the decision was for several more seasons worth of revisionist history, after the draft picks are made, after the rookies develop, and What Philadelphia will to prevent this problem when the influx of youth becomes another aging roster in several more seasons.

It's pretty easy for me to write about one of the most recent rebuild projects since I was involved in it with Eli Kamaka. While many people believed it was a bit early to start, the plans were actually in place the previous season when the Liberty accidentally won the Ultimus. Unfortunately the team was built largely on high TPE inactives and with regression coming around it was clear to the team that they needed to start rebuilding over the course of a few seasons. The Liberty traded away several key players like Eli Kamaka, Vikain Marmeladov, Paul DiMirio, Godfrey King, Clifford Rove, Damien Kroetch, and Micah Hendrix. In return, the Liberty were able to accumulate draft picks that should ultimately help them later down the road as they rebuild with new players and new leadership. The team will have a chance to build a new identity around active players instead of relying on the likes of Josh Garden, Fox North, and a largely inactive team. The NSFC is highly competitive and it made sense for the Liberty to begin rebuilding soon to maintain their pace with the rising Colorado Yeti. The other NSFC teams like Baltimore and Yellowknife should be following suit soon.

A team that needs to plan for the next chapter and possibly rebuild or reload is the Orange County Otters. The Otters have yet to miss the playoffs since the genesis of the league, 8 seasons, 8 trips to the playoffs, with 4 Ultimus appearances and 3 championships is a good resume.

However, that resume was built upon the backs of a lot of Season 1 and season two players that are regressing quickly. With limited draft picks and constantly picking near the end of the rounds, the Otters have seen a falloff in young talent recently.

The Otters have their future QB about to be picked, with Gus T.T. Showbiz in the DSFL, and they have star young Wideouts in Tegan Atwell and Carlito Crush, who will look to continue the production of WR greats Westfield and Phelps. However, a big void exists at the running back and tight end positions, as well as a fair amount of the defense.

It'll be a test of leadership and skill to see if Otters management can keep the playoff streak alive. Eyes around the league will be intrigued to watch the outcome, as they may be able to take away some tactics for their own rebuilds, or to see what not to do while attempting to continue dominance.

"Uh, I can't talk smack about the Yeti cause they're already rebuilding, so I'm gonna have to talk about the San Jose Sabercats. They've been, uh, a pretty average team for a while now. Not much activity in the playoffs, crappy losses in the regular season that have prevented them for having a chance in the rookie season, players just straight out not performing well on the field, it's a whole lot of problems out there man. I haven't really seen them draft well. Or scout. Like I don't even think I got a call from them at all, not even a message.

*James Brown takes some time from this interview to check his phone calls and messages*

Oh wait. Nope, they did. But you didn't draft me, but I'm on the Wraiths now and I love it there, so no bad feelings.

*James Brown blows a kiss to the screen*

All in all, I believe the Sabercats need to step their game up. They're becoming what the Yeti were. If the Yeti is better than you, well, that's just sad."

The most famous rebuild in NSFL history, the Colorado Yeti is finally bearing fruit, and they're actually becoming buyers at the trade deadline now for the first time.

The rebuild started painfully with a series of trades that just did not pan out for them. Whether it was Daybe as a LB, then CB, then retired, or trading away Tiernan, and Fulton for basically nothing. They also gave up a pick that ended up being Blackford Oakes, star safety for the resurgent New Orleans Second Line.

However, this season and last they have actually traded for some win-now pieces. First there was the trade for Dan Miller, who will be entering his second year of regression. A move that has to be questioned, considering their QB is still young and a weak link, so what prompted the S8 run. This season they traded away a large haul to shore up that interior with Eli Kamaka, and a smaller pick to acquire the rights for Damien Kroetch.

Now, the moves didn't completely pan out as they missed the playoffs for the, I believe, sixth season in a row. But, they did finish third in the division for the first time in a very long time. So maybe S9 will be their year.

What I am going to say is strictly my opinion and nothing else as my season and training schedule has been too busy to actually follow the social media or things that were happening with the NSFL teams. I am going to talk about Liberty and what should be a vital point and decision to make in order to make sure that the rebuild is started on a good note. And of course this vital decision is drafting me - Declan Harp. Get rid of all the unnecessary players that are at least 5 years older than I am and get bunch of youngsters. Build the team around me, make me into the franchise player that will peak the interest of young talent to join and play with me. I know it is not something you have seen before but times are changing so are the ways you knew the rebuilds to be done. Rebuild is important as you are building up a potential future cup contender by grabbing all the main pieces early and making them into an unstoppable force. There is only one choice or no choice at all when it comes to who to add first to this machine and that is - Declan Harp, the TE. Honestly if Liberty does not follow this awesome suggestion then I do not know what they are doing and it will show that they are going to fail - mark my words!

There are several rebuilds going on right now. The Arizona Outlaws, San Jose Sabercats, and Philadelphia Liberty all immediately came to mind. And on the tail end of a rebuild, finally approaching relevancy, there's always the often mocked (once deservedly, nowadays less so) Colorado Yeti. Let's first discuss Philadelphia. They reigning Ultimus champions held a firesale of the elite talent that brought them their trophy in the previous season. Legendary tight end Paul DirMirio and veteran defensive tackle Godfrey King were shipped off to New Orleans. Cornerstone secondary members Clifford Rove and Vikian Melamedov moved an hour's drive to the southwest to play for the Baltimore Hawks. Even Eli Kamaka and Damien Kroetch were sent off, both to Colorado for a host of future draft picks. The only household name players to remain in Philadelphia are wide receiver Josh Garden and quarterback Tyler Oles, though to the shock of many, even they were on the trade block. It will be interesting to see how Philadelphia's suddenly-initiated rebuild progresses in the coming seasons under the care of a brand new General Manager. Enough on that: over in San Jose, longtime Sabercat Benson Bayley was recently traded to the New Orleans Second Line, who now are making a strong push into the playoffs as the ASFC championship game approaches.

Leading up to the trade deadline, the NSFL saw a lot of big changes happen. The Philadelphia Liberty decided they were going to go into a big rebuild and shipped off a bunch of guys super quickly, sending players all across the league and gaining big first round picks in return which will help them get good again. Philadelphia moved general manager Eli Kamaka, a defensive line player, to the Colorado Yeti in a huge trade that made the Yeti defense better and brought some future talent to Philadelphia. They moved Paul DiMirio to the New Orleans Second Line where he is going to be a super key part of their offense moving forward. The team also shipped out Vikain Marmaledov who was a super good player for them on the back end for years. It is clear that the Liberty have the intention of building around a whole new group of guys and they will be able to do that super easy in this next class because there is a lot of really good players to be gained. Philadelphia can start anywhere with their rebuild, but I think the first piece the team will need to add is quarterback, especially with Tyler Oles announcing his retirement prior to the trade deadline. The team will definitely be hurting, and it's crazy to see it change after they just won the Ultimus.

I think its incredibly well documented that the Colorado Yeti have been in a rebuild for quite a few seasons now. It started back in S5 when they drafted myself and Andre Bly Jr. We were planning to be cornerstones of the franchise, but sadly I was a jerk and got myself out of there. Colorado saw themselves fight through two winless seasons, BUT from trading a few veterans (like the best player in franchise history Boss Tweed) for picks, the Yeti found themselves in a great position to rebuild. Those picks turned into just absolute studs for Colorado, with standouts such as wide receivers Dwayne Aaron and Howard Miller, WR turned RB Mark Grau, Kicker Micycle McCormick, and QB Ryan Applehort among others. Finally, after a lot of suffering, the Yeti enjoyed a breakout season, going 6-8 and missing out on the playoffs by one game. With the Liberty rebuilding now, and the Hawks hitting regression, the Yeti are poised to join the Yellowknife Wraiths in the playoffs next season. It was a long, hard road for these guys, and I’m personally thrilled for them as they’re building the team up nicely. It may not have worked out as fast as they wanted it to, but Colorado is on their way now in the NSFL. (216)
