Akselsen is quickly aging before our very eyes. This may be his last or second to last season, who really knows at this point. As his body begins to waste away due to father time he must turn to alternative workouts to maintain his shape.

As such he goes to the local Yellowknife Seniors' Society and participates with the other old birds. He starts the morning off with some Tai Chi, followed by an invigoration yoga session. These loosen up his limbs for the tasks to come. Once the morning sessions are over he breaks for some coffee with friends, as good a time as any to hit up Eustace for a quick game of backgammon. After coffee he heads down to the gym to participate in the strength and balance classes, a tiresome workout that belies its gentle name. From there he works on his agility with a Scottish Country Dance class, and his arm strength bowling and curling. Worn out by the activities he ends his workout by dropping in to receive the Healing Touch, a great full body massage.

He eats a small dinner and heads off to bed with his playbook in his three ring binder. Usually Akselsen falls asleep before turning the third page.

It's hard getting older, but Akselsen is in prime position to make the most of it.

Howard Miller’s coaches have told him that he’s likely at his peak in terms of a balance between speed and strength. He couldn’t get any faster without getting weaker – and he’s already not exactly bowling guys over – and he couldn’t get stronger without getting slower. The issues with drops that plagued him during his DSFL career and into his rookie season in the NSFL have all but disappeared for the most part, and he was a dependable target throughout Season 8. So, over the past offseason and as he moves forward, Miller has been looking at getting his motor up. Even as an elite athlete – one of the best in the world – the sheer pace and ferocity of the NSFL takes a lot of your tank. It takes a long time, and a lot of hard work, to build up the sort of endurance and stamina needed to compete consistently and stay on the field game in and game out at this level. So that’s what Miller is focusing on.

Lo Rax knows that if he is going to make it in the NSFL, he is going to have to be as versatile a defender as possible, as he is one who was not gifted the same level of physical gifts that many of the starts of the NSFL possess. As such, his training is varied. Rax is a regular attendee of Don Beebe's speed camp, for example: something generally reserved for player's on the offensive side of the ball. To hone his hand fighting and explosive movements, Lo practices at an MMA gym. In order to increase his agility and foot speed, Lo works by Irish dancing. Of course all that is on top of his more regular gym and workout routines: cardio on the workout bikes, pumping free weights and rounds of plyometrics. He knows that if he sticks to the conventional stuff, he'll have a conventional role for someone of his talent level: Top second stringer. But Rax has higher aspirations, so he'll do anything that he thinks can help to get better in even the most nuanced way.
