(S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - dropbear - 03-27-2019 Jay Longshaw has been involved in some whirlwind drafts. He was there the day his father, Ben Longshaw, got drafted by the San Jose SaberCats in the NSFL’s inaugural season. Ben had gone from a totally unknown prospect to rising star thanks to his activity around the league during the combine, happily fielding questions from the media to build his name recognition and proactively seeking out meetings with GMs. Then, he was involved in Howard Miller’s draft, as at the time his father was representing the receiver who is now playing his final season in the league. The trend of players that the Longshaw family are directly involved with getting drafted higher stopped at Miller, though. Partly because you can’t go any higher than first overall in back-to-back drafts (the DSFL and then NSFL for Miller), and partly because Jay’s own draft stocks never really got off the ground. He was very candid leading up to the draft that he didn’t have much in the way of game tape to show GMs, and he hoped that being honest would score him points. In the end, it didn’t do much, and he was a relatively insignificant pick. “Oh well, time to become a steal”, Jay was heard saying later that night. (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - Unicorn - 03-27-2019 pt pass (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - Bigred1580 - 03-27-2019 My draft story was one for the underdogs. Heading into the NSFL draft, I was a rather unknown. I was an undrafted free agent entering the DSFL in the previous year, so scouts didn’t have as much time to spend on me as others. I had come off a solid finish to the DSFL season, but I was still my team’s no. 2 wideout and didn’t have the stats of some others. Because of this, most of the pundits didn’t have me in their mock drafts. I understood this, and decided not to attend the draft in person. Instead, I had a low-key gathering including my family and loved ones, and tuned in to watch. The first round came and went and my name wasn’t called. No big deal, I didn’t really expect to, all the players in front of me had higher TPE than me. But it meant that every single team had passed on me either by skipping me or trading away their pick. It wasn’t all bad, my college teammate Johnny Snuggles was drafted no. 1 overall with the Wraiths, so I was happy for him. When the second round came along, I was surprised when my name was called! Some of the pundits on the broadcast were shocked and had no idea who I was. I was excited to hear from my GM, coach, and to reunite with Snuggles. Little did everyone know that I would be the steal of the draft, now moving from #13 in total TPE at the time of the draft, all the way to #5 in one season, and being the reigning DSFL WRotY. (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - MaxGnarland - 03-27-2019 I was sitting at home with my family and friends right before the draft when I got a call from my agent. He told me to not worry about my draft position since the draft class was a record setting one in terms of size. I had no idea I would fall all the way to the seventh round. It was great to watch all of the players I had played with and against get drafted, especially my brothers from the Blackbirds. But after the fourth round passed I started to get worried if I would even get drafted at all. I had gathered all of these people here to watch where I would end up and the idea that I might not end up anywhere and disappoint terrified me. Finally I got that call. I was heading back to the tropics after 4 years in frigid Wisconsin. I was a Solar Bear. Me, someone who never touched a football until my first year of college. I was a professional football player. I was obviously elated and relieved and although I fell much farther than I had anticipated but I was lucky to get a chance to show that I belonged. The GM told me how lucky he was that I was still there in the 7th round and I'm determined to prove him right. -Quentin Sinclair on his DSFL draft experience (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - Pizza-faith - 03-27-2019 3/18/2019 A day Martavius Mack will soon not forget. Round 1 and 2 have flown by, not a mention of Martavius. In fact, not a mention of any safety until late in the 2nd round. A record number of safeties entered this years draft. "My determination. Plain and simple." When reporters asked Mack what will set him apart from the numerous other options in the secondary. Martavius had let it be known that Tijuana is where Mack wanted to start his career, "The culture of the team, the winning ways, all of it. I want to be a Luchadore." Pick 60 appears on screen and Mack's phone began to buzz; "Let's get it started then coach, can't wait." It was a short but serious conversation when Mack finally received the call, in fact it took less then 30 seconds. No shorter was the conversation then the pause it took Martavius to get back to his roots, turning on the Office. "I'm not superstitious, but I am a little sitious." As Mack adorned a Luchadore mask and then politely asked us to leave. No screaming, no real celebration, Mack just seemed content and ready to get to work, and work he will do, believed to get serious play time in the upcoming season. Toby Flenderson with the Scranton Beet. 220 Words (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - Moosecop - 03-27-2019 Draft day was one of Barnes' favorite days of his entire life. He had just finished his first full season in the DSFL with the Marshals and had been getting calls from prospective NSFL general managers pretty much all season. Barnes had always carried himself on the field as if he was the best thing to ever lace em up so for him to be getting all this interest from big league teams really made it seem like all those long days of working out and practicing worth it. As for the actual draft day, as one of the top prospects in the class, he and his family were invited to attend the event in person and he gladly accepted. Barnes didn't expect to be waiting very long. Most draft experts had him pegged to go in the top 2 to either San Jose or Arizona almost 100% and based on talks that he had had with their respective front offices he figured that would be the case. When his name wasn't called with the first overall pick, he didn't let that get him down since he had a really good feeling he'd find his way onto the stage with the next selection. The commissioner made his way to the podium and announced that the Outlaws would be selecting him with the second pick and his family broke down in tears of joy. Barnes walked his way onto the stage with a big smile on his face. This was a new beginning for him as he was finally going to be an NSFL player. (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - iseedoug - 03-27-2019 Coming from a D3 football program, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, only known for NFL coach Matt Patricia (and the Dolphins kicker in 2015), Horne did not expect to be drafted. In addition, Horne was older than his peers, entering the draft at 25 years old. Despite his and many others doubts, he was heavily scouted and excelled in both team interviews and public press conferences. To even more people's surprise, Horne wowed many scouts with his athletic ability at the DSFL Combine. Horne says this is all thanks to his athletic trainer and mentor at the time, Icy Douglas. In the 2022 DSFL Draft, Horne was drafted by the Tijuana Luchadores as the 1st pick in the 2nd round, number 5 overall. After Horne’s impressive season in the DSFL (as a core member of the iconic defense, nicknamed "Ciudad de Sack" (roughly translating to Sack City in English) with NSFL stars like Chad and Thad Pennington), he was drafted in the first round of the NSFL draft to the San Jose Sabercats, and brought up to the NSFL in his first season. While Ben has had an up and down career, the day he was unexpectedly drafted to becoming a first round pick will be set in his mind forever. (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - toivo - 03-28-2019 Having been an Owl for a few seasons, but what feels like 2.5 years, thoughts about what else is out there come up. The Owls are a great team, performing well, and I have a strong attachment with the Owls. Still, I wonder if a shakeup via free agency would spark a new interest in the GOMHL and drive Lukas Säteri towards being the greatest player of the league. Toronto is good and has a lot of depth, which is why Lukas Säteri is a 3-rd line center. Lukas Säteri has the potential to be a top-6 player, and that is what really matters. Toronto may have the space in the future, but waiting around forever is no fun. The Owls invested a lot in me with the 1st pick, but I have given this franchise a lot, so I feel no particular obligation to be an Owl for life. That said, Owls are still a great team with great members. This off-season will be interesting, and might be my first free agency move since Jones to Ontario. Also, I would like to enter into the record that Ontario was a way better brand than Toronto. Media (S14) - PT 1 - Draft Day - AdamS - 03-28-2019 Dick still remembers hearing it the day he was drafted 1st overall to the Kansas City Coyotes. "Picks like this are why they missed the playoffs last year". He doesn't even know who said it because for some reason the recordings of that draft were lost. Dick Wizardry knew what was said about him though. And sure...no part of it made any fucking sense. Dick knew that the player picked in the first round the previous year was Andrew Reese, who had just gone 3rd overall in the NSFL draft week before Dick himself was drafted. In fact, the Coyotes' first 3 picks form the previous year were the first three players chosen overall in the draft. Dick knew obviously that he shouldn't let the rantings of a clearly bran damaged individual to affect him. For Dick though it was about the disrespect that the person had intended despite their incredible botched execution of attempting to insult him by comparing him to a #3 overall NSFL pick. Dick sometimes wondered if he himself would have the courage to admit how badly he fucked up if that person were him. Mostly he just reminded himself that people still didn't believe. Whether it was that draft day or his next one, where he fell to 10th, or the incredibly clear rookie of the year race where he wasn't even close to the unanimous winner.....Dick remembered. He remembered when training and when seeing others train. He remembered when watching film as he worked hard to understand the ACTUAL ability of players in the league. He remembered when reading scouting reports that he felt underrated opposing players. Dick remembered how the idiots had insulted him...and remembered how easy ti could be to assume less of other players too. Dick didn't just fuel himself with it, he held himself in check with it as well. Dick endeavored to make sure he would never have to find out if he was brave enough to admit that he had said or done one of the outright stupidest things in the history of the NSFL.
