Regardless of how this goes - even if every bit of the punishment remains as is - the rule should be rewritten for the future.

Put this earlier, but he changed player names too. Not formatting, straight up changed a GM players bot player.
"You never told me I couldn't" is a terrible defense when you do something that's obviously over the line, such as changing other players names, and it doesn't apply here.

I'm sorry that this isn't a legal constitution. It's also not against our rules to murder to someone, however if you murder a league member you will be banned.

Any user who abuses moderation powers in order to alter (without permission or valid reasoning) another users post, topic, or reply will be given the follow punishments:

and thats why i literally wrote a new rule that got voted in for exactly this kind of of situation...so we could fix somebody else's weird wording that left random loopholes that get exploited just like this
of course..your guy also literally also changed a GM player's name so your argument is mostly moot anyway

Valid reasoning is "His position was wrong" valid reasoning isnt "It was for a project/article/ImAnIdiotAndDecidedToChangeItBecauseOCD

There's no valid reasoning for changing another player's name, you just said that? What reason could he have for doing that that?

That needs to be done. It should have already been done, but you guys are taking a proactive step to do so, and I appreciate that. If you need a strong writer to look over them, I'd be glad to do so. However, this isn't even a loophole - it's just flat out a rule that says nothing.

He's not "my guy" I've seen him in discord a few times but have never even had a conversation with him, I just think he's getting screwed here by an ambiguous rule. It's nearly impossible to remove all ambiguity, but it's possible and fairly simple to remove much of it.

I never said there was or was not valid reasoning (because we shouldn't be determining valid reasoning on a case by case basis). It was definitely a poor decision to change the names, even if the format part of it wasn't.
