(S11) - Ultimus Week - ADwyer87 - 11-25-2018 Sit-down with a star:Interview a player from a team that is not your own that is in the playoffs. You must ask them four questions and at least three must relate to the league in some way. YOU MUST POST THE QUESTIONS AND THEIR ANSWERS FOR CREDIT. (Can be completed at any point) interview with @DeathOnReddit 1) You guys were able to make it back to the Ultimus against the Second Line once again. Its safe to say you two have a rivalry. Is this more of a friendly competition between you guys, or is there some genuine hate behind it? I mean to be honest I don't think it's anything much between us. Yea we've played each other 3 times in a row in the biggest game, but we never really go into a game versus them thinking they're a rival that we need to beat. It's just more like they're a really good team we want to prove we're better than. I don't hate anyone on their team, nor do they hate us. I hope so at least. 2) You guys lost in an OT thriller, the first Ultimus game ever to go to OT. Does that hurt more or less than a normal loss? It hurts a lot more. Usually when a game goes into OT you're going to be 2x as tired no matter if you win or lose. So having the ultimus going into OT, after a grueling season? This might be the most difficult loss I've had to expierence in a while. Just have to get over it though, and be glad for the wins we had. 3) How emotional was the locker room after you found out that Ryan Applehort was being traded immediately after the ultimus game? To be honest, from what I've heard Applehort wanted to leave. And has wanted to leave for a while now, so in my opinion he's a snake. And I know quite a few others hold the same view as me. 4) Now that you're retired, what do you plan to do with your life? Nothing much to be honest. Probably just going to sit around home, and watch some NSFL games on TV. I'm going to be rooting for both the Outlaws and the Hawks. I'm sure you'll see both teams facing against each other in the ultimus game very, very soon. Otherwise, I'm just going to take all the money I've gotten over the years, and just relax. Playoff Series MVP: It was a battle of two high end offensive teams as both the Hawks and Second Line came out of the semi finals having racked up at least 40 points against the opponents. As we all know the New Orleans Second Line would prevail in a 42-36 barn burner, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of starting quarter back Borkus Maximus III. The Italian native from the season 6 draft was on point, collecting 4 touchdowns while giving up 0 interceptions. A completion rate of just under 65% (33/51), Maximus III was able to rack up 400 passing yards for an average of 12.1 yards per throw, finishing the match with a strong QB rating of 114.8. A pass first QB by trade, he also collected two carries of his own for a total of 10 yards. This after just coming off another strong game that saw his rack up 3 touchdowns, including a completion rate of just over 60% (23/38) and a QB rating of 102.9, it truly speaks to his consistency as an elite level quarter back. While there were many other strong performances it's hard to deny the sheer excellence of this man in the biggest game of the season and that's why he takes my vote for series MVP. 3. NSFC Semifinal: The first game of the Ultimus playoffs had the underdog 8-6-0 Colorado Yeti up against the highly favored 9-5-0 Baltimore Hawks. To the surprise of many the Yeti were the first team to put points on the board as Mark Grau completed a 9 yard pass to Micycle McCormick for a quick touchdown just 6 minutes in to the game. Sadly that would be the the end of their scoring ways as Baltimore would go on to complete 6 consecutive touchdowns and a field goal, piling up a score of 45 to the Yeti's 7. ASFC Semifinal: Similar to the previously mentioned NSFC game, the ASFC semifinal had the heavily favoured New Orleans Second Line up against the underdog Orange County Otters. Once again the underdog would draw first blood putting up the only touchdown in the 1st quarter. New Orleans would answer in the 2nd quarter though, completing back to back touchdowns and a 47 yard field goal to go up 17-7 before the Otters would collect a field goal of their own to keep it within a touchdown going in to the 2nd half. Unfortunately they'd only manage to collect a single field goal in the 2nd half, while the New Orleans Second Line racked up another 23 points to put this one out of reach. final score 40-13. Ultimus Trophy: After a pair of blowouts fans were curious how the final would go and boy did they get their moneys worth. three touchdowns in the first quarter had the Second Line leading the Hawks 14-7 going in to the 2nd quarter, but Baltimore would answer with a quick on to start the 2nd quarter. At the end of the half New Orleans would reclaim the lead and enter the 2nd half up 21-17. Baltimore would narrow that deficit to 1 by the end of the 3rd quarter with the score at 28-27 as well as take a brief lead to start the final quarter after yet another touchdown, but the Second Line proved to be too resilient as they'd eventually tie the game, force overtime and win it in a dramatic 6 yard passing TD by Darren Smallwood. 4. Unsung Hero: Now I know close to nothing about the NSFL so it's tough for me to know who exactly is expected to kill it and who is exceeding expectations, but I'm going to assume the play of Tana Keita came as quite the surprise to many during this playoff run. A season 11 draftee and NSFL rookie was thrust in to several big games for the first time in his young career and made the most of it. Against the Orange County Otters in the semifinals he made 5 tackles, 1 sack and successfully defended 2 passes. Most of the spotlight was on the high flying offense as they managed to put up 40 points in a lopsided victory, but Keita's impact was very much there on the defensive side as they managed to keep the opposing Otters to just 13 points. In the ultimus finals he picked up right where he left off, making 10 tackles, 1 sack and defending 2 passes this time. While this was a battle of two strong offensive teams it was the play of Keita and his fellow defensive players that proved to be the difference in a wild 42-36 finish. A lot of pressure was placed on this young man in his first NSFL season and he delivered. (S11) - Ultimus Week - Kendrick - 11-26-2018 Robbed: Philadelphia Liberty were robbed of a playoff spot. Their 7-7 record wasn't good enough to squeak into the postseason but we feel this is a team that would've put up a fight. The Liberty were a surprise this season when they didn't drop below .500 winning percentage at years end. So much of a surprise that they should've really made the postseason over the Colorado Yeti. In a perfect world the Baltimore Hawks wouldn't have made it because why reward cockiness and arrogance with a postseason berth. Liberty had some upstart play from a lot of their youngsters and it actually paved the way for a productive season. Not to mention the Colorado Yeti didn't even show up for their playoff game (or they would have you believe with their terrible performance against the Baltimore Hawks). At least the Liberty would've scored more than one touchdown against an overconfident Hawks defense. The issue this year for the Liberty would've been offence though as their defence actually finished number one in the entire league for least points allowed per game. The yeti offence would've had to contend with a defense that looks primed to take control of the conference for years to come. Hate the player or the game: I think with their cap penalties and failure to abide by the league rules, the Baltimore Hawks should've been kicked out of the postseason and suspended for a playoffs. Thus Philadelphia would've made it and kicked Colorado's asses. Baltimore was easily a team focused on money laundering in the off-season or something illegal that the IRS was involved with. Their heads were elsewhere in the Ultimus Bowl and for that we might have been better off sending another team to represent the NSFC. Not only that but they have the worst jersey and logo in the league so it's obvious it's not something the league is going to want to brand for the future. I don't even think the Hawks players like the Hawks players as it's too many egotistical players in one locker room. When this team folds the league will be better off. Why allow a team that tip toes around the cap restrictions, to gain an advantage and then get into the playoffs? I'm thinking most teams should avoid to list players on their roster finances and see if the league notices. Shady operations call for stricter penalties and these guys should forfeit some draft picks as well. That Magic Moment: In the Ultimus Bowl this past week the New Orleans Second Line beat the Baltimore Hawks just like how it should be. However, the talk of the entire game was a huge punt return that saw Vladimir Fyodorovich break loose for a 50 yard scamper that torched the Baltimore Hawks special teams unit. The run was set up by some key blocks down field and eventually Fyodorovich brook lose and had the punter to beat with a slick juke. Vladimir was almost tripped up at the start of the return but his boot got loose from the grip of a Baltimore Hawks special teamer. This set the game up in New Orleans favour as they ended up grabbing a touchdown league late in the first quarter. Vladmir's scamper will go down as one of the greatest plays in New Orleans history but also one of the critical moments in an Ultimus Bowl championship game. Not only that, but Vladimir would then hit pay dirt three more times after to help his punt return become all for the right cause of winning. Break away speed and elusive running made it a thrilling play and everyone was out of their seats watching the young European break away from the pack. Going to Disneyland!: It's pretty obvious who was the Ultimus Bowl Most Valuable Player. Vladimir Fyodorovich walked away from the field with four total touchdowns and that earned him a trip to Disneyland and a brand new Chevrolet Equinox to tour his family around. While in Disneyland Fyodorovich stopped by many rides where people recognized him from their television sets a week before. Vladimir hit up Space Mountain a couple times in the morning to get his heart pumping before outlasting Indiana Jones' obstacles on his way to a relaxing afternoon with the Tea Cups. The highlight of the trip to Disneyland was the "It's A Small World" ride where Fyodorovich ended up puking because of the god awful soundtrack that seems to get everyone your or old. A nice stop for dinner inside one of the Bourbon street grills (which made him feel right at home). Vladimir finished the hot summer day with a tour on the log run where he forgot to bring a change of pants so he was basically sitting in his wet drawers for the rest of the night. They capped the night off with the California Adventure fireworks that seem to happen each night at the fairgrounds. (S11) - Ultimus Week - dropbear - 11-27-2018 Hate the player or the game There was one team that was the talk of the league over the offseason: the Philadelphia Liberty. While interesting free agents moves and intriguing trades were happening in many locations, the Liberty were unique because they were being both praised and mocked for the roster moves they made. The main culprits were the decisions to acquire Andre Bly Jr. and Eli Kamaka from the Colorado Yeti. The former had made it public that he wanted to play for the Yellowknife Wraiths once his contract was up, and the latter had already announced they would be retiring at the end of Season 11. As such, this meant both players would likely no longer be on the Liberty roster at season’s end. And that has turned out to be the case. However, the Liberty GMs were adamant they had had enough of ‘the process’, and wanted to show free agents and draft prospects that they meant business. And they did exactly that. In Season 11, the Liberty bounced back from a winless season to surge to a 7 – 7 record, only narrowly missing the playoffs to the Yeti, and actually having the fifth-best record in the league. Cleary, this is already a different team to the one that suffered a winless season, and if it wasn’t for my Yeti claiming the second NSFC playoff spot, I think the Liberty absolutely deserved it for their incredible turnaround in just one season. Championship Game Recap The Season 11 Ultimus matchup was one for the ages. Once the dust had settled from the NSFC and ASFC championship games and it was confirmed that the Baltimore Hawks and New Orleans Second Line would meet in the final game of the season, fans, players, and coaches alike all around the league were salivating over the game that was to come. Both teams fielded high-powered offensive units in Season 11, with superstar quarterbacks at their helm, hall-of-fame calibre running backs, elite wide receiver corps and defences that, though somewhat depleted compared with previous years, remained formidable. To say the game lived up to expectations would be an understatement. There were 78 points scored in total, with overtime being needed to settle the affair. Both quarterbacks threw for at least 3 touchdowns each, each team’s running back had a rushing touchdown, and there was only a single turnover in the entire game. It was a high-octane offensive matchup that noone wanted to see come to an end. In the end, it may well have been the familiarity the winning team’s quarterback, Borkus Mximus III, had with his teammates that decide the game. Hawks newcomer Ryan Applehort, while outstanding in his own right, just couldn’t quite get his new team over the line. Playoff Series MVP It’s somewhat of a cliché to say that a quarterback is a team’s best player. It seems the easy option because they’re such a pivotal part of any team’s success. But, despite that, I think that it was nonetheless clearly a quarterback that was the standout player in the Season 11 playoffs. Borkus Maximus III of the New Orleans Second Line had an incredible playoff campaign, accumulating more than 700 passing yards and throwing for 7 passing touchdowns, all while only turning the ball over once in his team’s two games. This performance came against two of the league’s best teams: the Orange County Otters and the Baltimore Hawks. He wasn’t out there bullying bottom-dwelling teams, he was putting up incredible numbers against the best the league had to offer. To put things in context, his 7 passing touchdowns in two playoff games is nearly as many as Christ (10) had on the season for San Jose, and his 700 yards is roughly a quarter of the total passing yards Christ and Falconi (of the Philadelphia Liberty) managed to put up through 14 games. I did my best to find someone other than a quarterback deserving of the playoff MVP, but with such phenomenal performances on the biggest stage, there was no way it couldn’t be Borkus. Unsung Hero It’s rare that a player who scores a touchdown and has more than 160 yards over two playoff games can be considered an ‘unsung hero’, but such is the strength of the New Orleans Second Line’s roster, and such was the height of their level of play during their impressive playoff stretch that resulted in their second Ultimus win from four straight appearances. Paul DiMirio is arguably the greatest NSFL tight end of all time, and a no-brainer for the Hall of Fame. But he’s not immune to the effects of Father Time, and that’s what makes his timeless performance in this season’s playoffs so special. He caught 5 catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in the conference championship against the Orange County Otters, before hauling in 6 passes for 90 yards in the Ultimus matchup with the reigning champions, the Baltimore Hawks. DiMirio was a safety blanket for quarterback Borkus Maximus III, and freed up other players on the Second Line’s high-powered offense: Fyodorovich had a playoff campaign that included 5 receiving touchdowns, Smallwood nabbed himself 4 touchdowns through a combination of rushing and receiving, and LeClair accumulated more than 160 receiving yards over the two-game stretch as well. Taking all of that into consideration, it’s easy to see how DiMirio’s efforts could be overlooked, earning him the title of ‘Unsung Hero’. (S11) - Ultimus Week - Bayley - 11-27-2018 Option 1: Playoff Series MVP: Choose an MVP for one of the playoff series and write about why you chose them. Must be completed after the playoff series you write about The series that I am going to write about is the series of the New Orleans Second Line and the Orange County Otters in the ASFC Championship game. Coming into the game, the Otters were really on a winning streak which gave them a great chance to win in this game. However, it was the New Orleans Second Line that came out on top with a score of 40-13. There really were a couple players that deserved the MVP in this game for New Orleans. The first is Borkus Maximus III. He had 23/38 with 319 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, also 3 runs on the ground for 32 yards. He did have 1 interception. On the ground, it was Darren Smallwood that had 32 carries for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns. In the air, it was Vladimir Fyodorovich with his 5 catches for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns that was the star of the receiving team. On defense, you need someone to come up with a big play, look for no one else than Tana Keita! He had 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception. There really were a few guys to pick from, but I have to go with one of these guys that I listed above. Quote:Words: 212Option 2: Going to Disneyland!:Who was the Ultimus MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland. (Can be completed after the Ultimus game) The Ultimus Game really came down to the wire. In the last couple seasons, every meeting between the Baltimore Hawks and New Orleans Second Line came down to one possession, one chance for someone to make a play. Whether it was a big play on offense like we saw from LeClair or a big play on defense, this game was no different. This game came down to one score, one big score from Darren Smallwood which would cap the career off for this guy. This was his last game, this was his last catch, this was his last touchdown. Look at the end of this career, what a career. He went out on a high. Now, the MVP for this game. There are so many options for MVP. We could again go with Bork Maximus with his 400 yards through the air and 4 touchdowns. We could go with Smallwood that had 36 rushes for 139 yards and 1 touchdown also with 5 catches for 18 yards and the game winning touchdown. Or, do we go with Vladimir Fyodorovich who had 10 catches for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns, yes three touchdowns. Alexandre LeClair also had 6 catches for 103 yards. On defense, there was Julian O'Sullivan that had a hell of a game. O'Sullivan had 11 tackles, 1 for loss and 1 pass deflection. Tana Keita had 10 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 pass deflections once again. There was a lot to like in this game, too many guys to pick from. Quote:Words: 254Option 3: Unsung Hero:Who was the unsung hero of the playoffs, convince us. (Can be completed after the Ultimus game) The unsung hero of the playoffs was Tana Keita, rookie linebacker for the New Orleans Second Line. Just a reminder: He had 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception in the first game against the Orange County Otters. In the Championship game, where stars are really made, Tana Keita had 10 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 pass deflections. That is a guy that does not get a lot of credit, but really deserves all of the credit in the world. For someone like a rookie to put in that kind of performance in two straight games in that environment, that has to be looked at as a hero. When you needed a big play on defense, it always seemed like the same name kept popping up again and again. Keita is going to have a great career if this is how it is going to start. It is going to be very exciting to see the progression for this guy. He had a great playoffs without question. He deserves more credit, I am not sure why everyone is not listing this guy. I guess that is exactly why he would be a Unsung hero, huh? I do not see why he would not be a prime example of that. Quote:Words: 213Option 4: Interview with @LattimoreIsland 1. How do you feel about your season in the DSFL? I think I did well, but could have done better. I know these guys are scrubs and I'm saving my time and abilities on moving up towards the NSFL. These guys won't be able to hang with me once I record 17 interceptions as a rookie. 2. Would you be mad if you spent another season down in the DSFL to develop more before needing to step in for Bayley? I do whatever God's plan is. If his plan is for me to train a little more while the guys up there watch over me, that's fine. I'll just keep dominating the DSFL. 3. Where is your favorite place to play in the DSFL so far? My favorite place to play is in San Antonio. Nothing is like having a home crowd to pump you up. Whenever I get a big play like an interception or a forced fumble the crowd just fucking explodes. One of the best feelings a guy ever gets. 4. Do you think a hot dog is a sandwich? Yes or no? Why? I don't respek anybody who thinks that hot dog is a sandwich. A sandwich is two pieces of bread that has meat, veggies, and/or condiments n the middle of it. A bun automatically disqualifies a hot dog from being a sandwich. period (S11) - Ultimus Week - DannyMethane - 11-27-2018 Robbed The San Jose Sabercats were robbed. I know they finished 1 and 13. I know they finished with almost twice as many points against as points for. I know they lost more games than any two playoffs did combined. But hear me out. Did the Yeti, losers via 45 - 7 shellaccing deserve that spot? The Sabercats had decent showings against the Hawks all season, including a 30 - 24 thriller in week 12. There's no way the Sabercats would score less than 17 against the Hawks, yet here go the Yeti, putting up 7 in the first and then silence for three quarters. Pathetic. And a case could even be made to put the Sabercats in over the Otters. It would have been a more exciting game, for sure. The Sabercats put up a respectable 14 points against the Secondline in Week 13, with a breakout showing for rookie Jerrod Canton. 145 yards on thirty carries for an average just shy of five yards per carry? Tell me you wouldn't want to see that over the thirteen point disappointment the Otters called a playoff game. Canton tore up the Second Line in both showings this season. This kid is going to carry the Sabercats into the playoffs and beyond. I'm calling it now. (WC: 212) Unsung Hero Perfect on extra points. Perfect on field goals (from any range). Nine for nine and three for three respectively, Turk Turkleton was far and away the unsung hero of the playoofs. Solely responsible for 18 of 81 points (that's over twenty two percent for you kids keeping track at home), Turk "The Mule Leg" Turkleton was banging them home left and right. He doesn't care which hash mark you put it at. Left hash, right hash, corn beef hash, fuck it, he's putting that thing closer to the center of those uprights than an olympic sharp shooter on a still day. I think he's got the leg to put one away from 70 yards, and you can quote me on that. Add to that that he's got punting duty too, bombing out a crazy seventy four yarder in the Ultimus game, pinning two deep inside the 20 yard line. This guy has superstar written all over him. When asked why he chose to play kicker when he's clearly such a stud on the field he responded with this gem: "When I was growing up, I had two songs I listened to to pump me up. The first one was Careless Whisper. The other was Adam Sandler's The Lonesome Kicker. I wanted to be just like Andre Kristacovitchlalinski, Jr. Inspires me to be great every day." (WC: 225) SHL PT#5 And last but not least: ![]() (S11) - Ultimus Week - Sweetwater - 11-28-2018 Robbed: Write about why a team that failed to make the playoffs should have over somebody else. The San Jose Sabercats were robbed of an NSFL playoff appearance. There. I said it. Now go smelt some iron on that scorching hot take while I spit some knowledge. FACT: The Sabercats had the #1 rush defense in the league, and #2 in yardage allowed. FACT: They also had the #2 rusher in the league, who would have been #1 if not for a failed game plan experiment. FACT: Many players on the team were given the incorrect EXP in the sim until over halfway through the season. FACT: The Sabercats are the only team in the league who didn't plan their depth chart around using WRs as DBs. Now that you've been properly educated, it's time to hear some intelligent and informed opinionated discussion. Fuck that, here's why we're better than you. We're cooler, we're richer, we're better looking, we're more interesting, and our side bitches are hotter than your main bitches. Just think about how much more fun the playoffs would be if a team who truly deserved it, a scrappy underdog, got in. At the end of the day, there's just one more fact to get your enormous ego and your "logic" and "basic reasoning" and "scores" around. FACT: If the Sabercats had better players and scored more points, we would have been in the playoffs. Suck it. Hate the player or the game: Tell us which team made the playoffs and shouldn't have, or which team didn't and should have? The Yeti didn't deserve to make the playoffs. Leave it to the cheating-est team in NSFL history to sneak their way into the postseason. I'm not saying they cheated this year, at least not that I know of. I'm saying I could throw some shit at those walls and you know something would stick. I'm not saying that the worst defense in the league has no business being in the playoffs, I'll let the score do that for me. It's just no coincidence that once one of the pass-happiest team in the league met an actual secondary they crumpled immediately. Who would've guess that could even happen to a team with only 1 win against teams with winning records? I sure did. It's almost too bad, because this was their best shot for a couple seasons at making the big dance. With no draft picks this past offseason, there is basically no young talent to plug holes in their game, and nobody to develop. Luckily they're in a weak conference so they can get the 4 easy wins against the worst teams in the league, then hope they split with the next two above them and get a fluke to keep those playoff hopes alive year to year. Fite me IRL. Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the matchups What a big fucking surprise, huh? I guess we should change our name to the NSBA because we're just gonna keep having the same championship matchup over and over again. Quick, which season am I talking about: The #1 seeded Hawks and Second Line walked over the Yeti and Otters (who barely made it in), into the Ultimus, where a close game kept it interesting until the end? I'll give you a hint, the winner was NOLA. Exactly. The only interesting part of this year's playoffs was our Ultimus going into overtime. It was kind of funny seeing the Hawks drop 600 yards of offence and 45 points on the Yeti. At least the Otters pretended to put up a fight, turns out you do still need a rushing game to be relevant in the postseason though. The Ultimus was really where it was at especially if you really like offense. Sometimes it's fun to just watch two powerhouses go full arms race and see who can out-nuke the other. With over 1000 yards of offence, and almost 80 points scored, this may go down as one of the highest scoring games in the league, let alone the Ultimus. I just wish the games leading up to the action were more like it. Unsung Hero:Who was the unsung hero of the playoffs, convince us. Darren Smallwood was the unsung hero of the playoffs. Well, maybe more people recognize his performance than not, but my point stands. While Bork was putting up 700+ yards and 7 TDs, and Fyodorovich was catching 5 TDs, Smallwood put his head down and rushed forward to do his job. With almost 280 yards, and 3 rushing TDs, his rushing kept the clock rolling and the chains moving. He was a redzone threat and the go to guy for a 1st down. But his heroics didn't just end with running really far or into the endzone, he alone iced the game for NOLA in the Ultimus. The last five plays of the game were: 3 yard rush, 3 yard rush, 5 yard rush, 2 yard rush, 6 yard TD reception. When the game came down to the wire, the Second Line counted on one man to finish the game: Darren. Fucking. Smallwood. I don't care that he was the Offensive MVP the game before. It was the "Greg Jennings--I put da team on my back" moment that solidified him as the true hero of the game. For him to get anything less than Ultimus MVP is considering him as "unsung" in my book. |
