sit down with a fan where i interview @speculadora

1. Grats on making the playoffs. What was the most memorable part of your regular season?

Not sure if anything really jumps out as memorable. I would just say the body of work, I guess. The fact that we won 10 games and took care of business when we were supposed to, for the most part, is definitely something I'm happy with after it sort of felt like we stumbled through last season. Felt nice to put up a 2-0 record on San Jose after so many seasons of splitting or them coming away 2-0. Honestly the thing that sticks with me most, though, is losing what felt like a game we really had a good shot at against Yellowknife. It was obviously tight but winning that game, all else being equal, would've given us HFA throughout the playoffs.

2. What strengths and weaknesses do you think your first round matchup, Arizona has?

They're pretty solid all-around, I suppose. Definitely would say their defense made an impression early on in the season, and they held us to 37 points in our two meetings combined when we averaged 32.1 points per game this season. So scores probably won't come easy against them. They also utilize a lot of different weapons in the passing game which is something that Orange County kind of originated even though we've thrown it back a bit this season. So I'm always a fan of that. And obviously a high level quarterback, even if that's not what the stats say.

3. What did you expect coming into the season? How is it different/similar to what happened?

I expected roughly this, though it was difficult to predict anything exact without knowing the schedule until basically the first week of the season. If we'd had, say, road games against Philadelphia, Yellowknife, and Baltimore, instead of home games, I might've expected a lot less than I would have otherwise. But with 8 conference games I felt we'd have a good chance in no matter what, it was easy to envision 9-10 wins. With this schedule I would've liked to achieve 11 but things don't always break your way and we've had our fair share of good breaks.

4. Is there any one game you would change that already happened this year?

Uh, yeah, duh. Kind of a dick question smh. Yellowknife game, obviously. We lost a home game, and one that as it turns out would've given us an edge over Chicago for playoff home field even though we lost our head-to-head matchup against them. We went into that at roughly 63% favorites I believe, and that held up testing the file after the fact. That was actually probably the only game I really felt bad about losing, though. And even then, it was super tight because 63% as the home team means that you're pretty equal in quality on a neutral field.

20 wild card

I am here to talk about the reason why the Yellowknife Wraiths should have made the next round in the wild card game against the Philadelphia Liberty. First off, some of the more obvious reasons. The chad Wraiths led the NSFL in total offense last year, finishing first in both points and yards. Meanwhile, the LOSER Liberty were not first in either of those categories. Pitiful. Imagine not being first in points or total yards. I definitely cannot relate. Second, the Wraiths won a grand total of one two three four five six seven eight nine ten games this season. Guess how many the LOSER Liberty won? That's right, only seven! Winning seven games would be quite pathetic. Another important note about the LOSER Liberty and how well (or poorly) they fared against the chad Wraiths is the season series. You can't even start counting the amount of games the Liberty won against Yellowknife this season on your fingers. That's right, because it was a fat goose egg. Goose eggs suck just like the LOSER Liberty do. Finally, according to @Eco's super handy TPE tracker, look at this: https://tpetracker.herokuapp.com/team_stats. The Wraiths had MORE than TWO THOUSAND more effective TPE than the LOSER Liberty. Quite pathetic if you ask me, as the Wraiths were so obviously the better team.

7 next year

Our team should be looked at as the favorites to win the Ultimus next year because of how well our offseason went. We are running back the team that went 10-3, tied for home field advantage, and everyone save a few is only gonna improve. Our big offseason addition was the free agency signing of Mason Brown. This marks the second straight year that the Wraiths signed the best defensive player on the market that changed teams, following the acquisition of probable MVP Danny Grithead. The Wraiths can only hope that the Brown acquisition goes that well. This Wraiths team is energized. The whole squad knows what's at stake. The magical thing about last season's run was there were little to no expectations for the squad coming into the season. This year, a whole lot more is at stake. People are already seeing the Wraiths as potentially the top squad in the NSFC. The pressure is on the general managers, myself and Bigred to deliver. The Wraiths should be able to rise up to the challenge, though. With a grand total of 16 actives being part of the Wraiths roster this season, the team should be able to improve more and more as the season goes on, at prime condition for the playoffs.

11) Trades

Before week 9, Ludicolo Bigby was traded to San Jose. The rookie running back wasn't happy with his usage in Baltimore and believed he could be more useful to the team. San Jose needed a young running back who could lead the team in the next few years. This trade helped the team a lot. They were able to make it to the playoffs. With the addition of Ludicolo Bigby, their running game improved so much. In their last five games, the sabercats had to play four games away. They had a terrible schedule but they were still to win three games. They won in Baltimore, Bigby's former team. He played well against them, scoring his first touchdown of his career in that game. Chris Orosz is a good player but having another running back taking some carries will help the offense. In the playoffs, Chris Orosz had a terrible game against the Outlaws. He has only run for 22 yards in 7 attempts. Bigby had a way better game, he rushed for 55 yards in 12 attempts. If the coach would have given him more carries, I think the game would have been more closer. Next season, Ludicolo Bigby will get the chance to more games for the Sabercats so I expect the team to have a better season.

7) Next year

The Chicago Butchers were poised to win it all this season. In our inaugural season we secured home field advantage thanks to our stalwart defense and run game that controlled the clock. It was the perfect storm that ultimately resulted in a 2nd round exit. It does feel bad to lose even though we had such a dominant regular season, but as a linebacker playing out of position at safety, there's really nothing more that I could have done. I was uncomfortable all season in the safety spot, even though by all accounts I was doing very well. Apparently it took the entire season, but people apparently started to take notice. I felt like I was targeted in our loss, and I can't blame them. I hope next season I'm allowed to play in my natural position. I truly believe it will help both the team and myself. We have a ton of young guys including Lewis, Torenson, Jenkins, and myself. That's youngsters on both sides of the ball that will only get better. We still have our star WR and DE to lead each side of the ball as well. I fully expect us to be right back in the position we were in this season. Right on top of the league heading into the playoffs.

2. ROBBED

You want to talk about being robbed, huh? Well, look no further than the ASFC champion Orange County Otters getting ousted from the playoffs in an incredibly unceremonious fashion by the Arizona Outlaws. This game should have been titled, "Being Screwed by the Sim: Level 1000". I mean, I understand that upsets happen, any given Sunday, or whatever bullshit line you want to roll out there, but this was an exercise in being humiliated by the sim. We fumbled in the red zone twice, once in the endzone. I believe we were picked off two or three times, after Showbiz had his best season for touchdown to turnover ratio maybe ever. Our defense played like we were all wearing ankle weights, and I'll take my own lumps with that statement too. Don't get me wrong, Arizona had a fantastic football team this season, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that they might be able to beat us. What is ridiculous to me is that we got utterly spanked in such a demoralizing way. I mean, the locker room was more or less in shambles after the loss and it's not hard to see why. I'm alright with losing, but getting smoked was absolute nonsense.

3. NEXT YEAR

I don't like the fact that I've had to do one of these "Next Year" things for so many seasons in a row now. I'm always on the bandwagon here that we will win the Ultimus next season, and it's not really like we've ever been that far away. We're still the only team to make the playoffs in every season of their existence, and this season we were better than ever. That was due mostly to the fact that we had an absolutely incredible offense, anchored by the league's most talented receiving corp. You don't often get a group like Sunnycursed, Vinny Valentine, and Johnny Blaze, so losing this season hits super hard. We're still going to have a great team this season, but the odds of us being able to retain all that offensive talent is slim to none. They all deserve fat contracts and we obviously can't afford to hand out too many of those. That being said, we've got a lot of great, young players who are going to be coming into their own this season, and that has me super excited. This may one of my last really great chances to win another Ultimus in an Otters uniform, so I'm really hoping that it'll work out.

Task 7 - Why should the Marshals be considered the favorites to win it all this year? Because they have me, that’s why. I’m staying down for another year to help out all of the incoming rookies, and I can not wait to get the season started. Starting in this league as a lower level quarterback is very tough, because the stats will just not be there at all. But I'm not too worried about what goes on with me, I'm more focused on the weapons they put around me. The Marshals have been known to bring in a very strong defense, so I always have that behind me. This year they’re going to look into getting me a few more guys to throw to as well, so that will be fun. I really think we can do something special down here in the DSFL. No matter what i’ll be staying down here and helping them with whatever they need. If they need a good locker room guy with a leadership role, I can do that. I’m happy to help the Marshals in any way they need. I’m really glad that they were the ones to draft me, I've met so many amazing people on that team.

3) All About The QBs

One of the best QB matchups of this year's playoff occured in the wildcard round in the game between Yellowknife and Philadelphia. Cooter Bigsby and Adriana Falconi were probably the 3rd and 4th best QBs in the regular season and they had a duel in their game. Both of them went over 100 passer rating and Falconi got very close to 400 yards. Bigsby did a slightly better job of spreading the ball around, hitting 6 different targets to Falconi's 5. Cooter Bigsby also had no interceptions while Falconi had one although maybe he would've gotten picked off had he thrown the ball as many times as Falconi did in this game. Philadelphia went down 2 scores pretty early in the 3rd quarter so Adriana had to shoulder a heavy offensive burden to get Philadelphia the win. Unfortunately for these teams, somebody had to win and that ended up being the Liberty. It's not the fault of Bigsby or any other Wraiths' player that they lost. Yellowknife kicked a field goal down by 4 with 3 minutes to play. That coaching decision is an insult to the effort that Bigsby and the rest of the Wraiths put in all season and during this game.

5) Spotlight On The Youth

There were several season 15 players that made a huge impact on this year's Ultimus. Arizona's main core is season 15 players outside of Raymond Vans, Leighton Lee, and Andrew Reese. Martavius Mack got a sack and Lucas Knight had a game saving play. Brock Landers had 3 receptions for 36 yards. Lamont Mckinnie ended up second on the Outlaws in terms of tackles but didn't do anything else. However, the main contributions from season 15 players came from Philadelphia. Farley Hank ran for a touchdown while having the most rushing yards on Philadelphia and Nacho Varga got 59 yards through the air. On the defensive side, Rock Hardshaft got 12 tackles and Alberto McGwire picked up 2 sacks. Had Philadelphia won, the MVP would've been a season 15 player as Richard D'Attoria V had one of the best games I've ever seen. He had 17 tackles which might be an Ultimus record, broke up a pass, and also had a pick six late in the 4th quarter which gave Philly the lead and momentum. Unfortunately for D'attoria, his contributions ended up being all for naught as Arizona won their first non-asterisk Ultimus. The young talent was on display in the Ultimus and for the most part they did a good job of stepping up to the immense pressure that was placed on them.

7) Next Year

I don't know if this is cheating because we won the Ultimus this year but I think we're getting it next year as well. Not only is our young talent still young and talented and improving, but we are a serious free agent destination now that we have a ring. We have the top TPE player in the league and we actually have a first round pick in this relatively deep draft class. This allows us to fill the needs we do have and we also have enough cap to make a pass at free agents such as Sunnycursed. If we do get Sunnycursed that will fill our biggest need and give us 2 of the top 3 players in the league TPE-wise. We have 5 max-earning season 15 rookies, who should be around 600 TPE at the start of the season, if not even higher. Jeffery Murphy is also picking up his TPE earning, so our running back group looks significantly better. Our main conference rivals are also going to get worse, losing one of their best receivers just as a young QB comes up to replace a veteran who has won rings. San Jose will also need a bit of a rebuild as they now don't have a starting QB with Joliet Christ's retirement. I think we can definitely win 10 games next year and claim home field throughout the playoffs.

14) That Magic Moment

This was it. All they needed was a stop. About 50 yards behind Lucas Knight was the end zone. If Philadelphia got there, they would win and if they didn't the Ultimus would come home. Adriana Falconi is barking out orders, play clock is winding down and the Outlaws are confused why Falconi is waiting. She snaps the ball and throws a quick screen to Vander Jones, 35 seconds left. Jones runs forward and is wrapped up, but he throws the ball back to Nacho Varga. He runs around a bit before tossing it back to Falconi, 22 seconds now. Falconi runs up to the 46 then laterals behind her to Vander Jones, who has gotten back up. Jones sees a lane and sprints. There's nobody in front of him. He can do it, become the hero of Philadelphia the way that Paul Dimirio or Fox North or even Tyler Oles was 9 years ago. Jones reaches the Outlaws 20 before he starts to get tired, sprinting as hard as he ever has with pads on tires a guy out. He is confused as he hears frantic cheering in Outlaw stadium. Little does Jones know that young Lucas Knight, who's played solid all night despite lackluster stats, is sprinting at a breakneck pace to save the Outlaws. Jones reaches the 15 and he feels hands grab his waist. Lucas Knight dove out and grabbed Jones, twisting his body midair to try and drag Vander down. He succeeds. Vander Jones' knee touches the turf at the 13 yard line and the clock is at 3 seconds, not enough time to get a play off. Knight stands up to thunderous cheers and as soon as the clock hits 0 he is mobbed by Outlaws as a dejected Vander Jones walks to his teammates to receive halfhearted smacks on the helmets and words of encouragement.

1) Playoff Predictions, Reviews
Ok now sit down shut up and listen cuz ol’ Jimmy Dugan is here to tell you all a fantastic story about my first championship win in the great sport of football. I mean, this game ended 28-14 but you best believe that’s because your Tijuana Luchadores had it in the bag from the start of the game. I mean, going up 21-0 to start out a championship is about as good as you can start. We dominated on all three sides of the ball that game. Ducky Donut absolutely killed it out there. 21 carries, 124 yards, 2 TDs and 5.9 yards per carry, including a longest run 15 yards for the first touchdown of the game. Offensive game ball goes to him. On the defensive side, game ball goes to my main man Jordan Andrews, who in what will most likely be his last game as a Luchadore had 6 tackles, 3 passes defended and a pick in the 3rd quarter. Defensive game ball is his. On special teams, I’m gonna highlight a guy I don’t get to talk about a whole lot, Lars Fredrickson. He joined the team last season and has been quietly putting in work, but he performed when the lights shone the brightest and blocked a key punt to set us up for Ducky’s second touchdown.

2) All about the QBs
You guys gave me an opportunity to talk about my Ultimini win, and damnit I’m gonna talk about my Ultimini win. This was a battle between two of the top QBs in the league last season. Armstrong was the more proficient passer, but McCann was efficient as all hell and was an excellent rushing QB. McCann did what McCann does best. He only tossed the ball 18 times, but he completed 10 of them for 86 yards, plus he threw for 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, netting a passer rating of 105.3. Like I said, my guy is efficient. Throwing a touchdown on 1/5 of your completions as the starting quarterback in the Ultimini is a hell of a feat. In addition, he took off and ran for 24 yards on 3 attempts with a longest run of 14. Armstrong, however, threw the ball 38 times, completing 19 of those passes. He walked away with 257 passing yards, better than Jordan significantly in both gross yards and average, as well as getting 1 touchdown, but threw 2 interceptions and finished with a passer rating of 58.8. Now, we didn’t need to ask Jordan to do a hell of a lot with how great Ducky played, but when we needed him here was there in spades. Armstrong was the heart and soul of their offense, but was stopped in his tracks and wasn’t able to get down the field enough to win a championship in his final game in Portland.

5) Spotlight on Youth (S15 edition)
I’m gonna talk about someone who gave their all and would likely have won Ultimus MVP had they won the Ultimus, Richard D'Attoria V. I know we all know he was a huge star in the playoffs, but the degree to which he was great cannot be overstated. In general, I hate tackles as a stat. It means that you had a ton of plays run against you, so your defence as a collective wasn’t that great. However, putting up 17 tackles in the Ultimus is about as clutch as you can get. That’s an incredible number. That alone would be enough to talk about D'Attoria here, but he also had a clutch pick 6 to give his team the lead with 8 minutes left, and had Andrew Reese not lead his team down the field for a game winning drive with a minute and a half left on the clock, it would’ve been the game winner. This speed demon was all over the field all game and gave absolutely everything. It’s unfortunate that the team came up short, but D'Attoria cannot be blamed for that. At his young age, I expect that we’ll see plenty more from Richard as time goes on. Philadelphia has been making steady improvements to the team, and having a player this talented as your safety is huge for a defence.

6) Our Time
Written: Why should your team be looked at the favorite to win the Ultimus or Ultimini this season.
Graphics: Show with a graphic why your team is/was the best team.

Clearly, it is our time because the Arizona Outlaws are your official S16 Ultimus champions. And damn it feels good to say that. However, there are many nay-sayers who are quick to dismiss us, so perhaps it needs to be said a bit louder.

No, this season did not come easy for us. We had to fight for every win we got. This is a fresh, young team that is hungry for success and determined to turn the team’s image around. We don’t have as many big name stars as other teams might, which makes us easy to overlook, but we do have one of the most active teams in the league and many of our young players are stars in the making with long, exciting careers ahead of them. It’s impossible to say where their careers will ultimately lead them, but I’m so proud to say a locker room with these guys. They’ve put the work in to make this team a contender practically overnight and yet they don’t get the credit they deserve.

It’s easy to look at the season Arizona had and call this win a fluke. People didn’t expect us to beat the Sabercats (and certainly not by 20 points). They didn’t expect us to beat the Otters on the road. And, even with homefield advantage in the Ultimus, many were quick to declare that the Liberty would easily crush us. But we persevered and we proved the doubters wrong. It’s easy to call it luck when a team prevails against the odds. But that discounts the effort that the players put into improving over the course of the season and the level of game-planning that the GMs put in. Arizona had a Frankenstein offense composed of 3 RBs, 2 TEs, and only 1 WR, but we got creative and constantly looked for ways to shake that offense up. It was ugly at times, but it had potential; if anything, consistency was the one thing we lacked as we’d put up 40 points against a team like OCO in one test and 10 points in then next. But still we searched for new ways to find success and we implemented game plans that we hoped would catch our opponents off-guard. While we inconsistent, we were also unpredictable. And so we tried to use that to our advantage. In what we expected to be our most challenging game of the playoffs, we pulled out a brand new strategy for OCO… and it worked. Our defense stepped up and held them to only 3 points while creating 4 turnovers. And the mediocre offense that others were so quick to dismiss found the end zone 4 times, scoring consistently against one of the top defenses in the league. We were certainly the underdog, but when the playoffs came, we found ways to keep winning. And now, after 13 seasons, we can once again call ourselves champions. (487 Words)

5) Spotlight on Youth (S15 edition)
Written: The first r/nfl wave made our biggest class ever. Now that class is hitting its prime. Write 200 words on one of the players in this year's Ultimus Week that are Season 15 and spotlight on how they can affect or did affect this year's Ultimus. (NSFL Only)
Graphics: Create a graphic of a Season 15 player with a statistical breakdown on their season, or their playoff performances.

Honestly, it’s so difficult to pick only one player here because, coming out of the S15 Draft, we found ourselves with FIVE stars in the making and there is absolutely no way we could have made it this far without each and every one of them: Brock Landers. Jammerson Irving. Lamont McKinnie. Lucas Knight. Ricardo Morris.

But this is ultimately a topic about the Ultimus itself and not the regular season or other play-offs games, so I’ll the man who made the biggest play of the game: Lucas Knight. At first glance, the box score might appear to be unkind to Knight as he only had 2 tackles. Thanks largely in part to his help, the Liberty all-star receiver Jordan von Matt was held to only 1 catch for 13 yards, but box scores don’t tell the full story and CBs often don’t get the praise they truly deserve. But even among those two tackles, there is one that will forever remain engrained in the memories of Arizona fans.

With only 42 seconds, Philly was down 30-34 and determined to make a game-winning drive. They found themselves on their own 46 yard line and, after Adriana Falconi had thrown an incredible 42 touchdowns over the course of the regular season and playoffs, she was now only 1 touchdown away from holding the S16 Ultimus trophy high above her head. Time was running out and the pressure was tense for both teams. Falconi took her shot, sending the ball toward Vander Jones, who broke off with a 42 yard catch. Victory remained only a few yards away, but with everything on the line, Knight managed to catch him with a game-winning tackle that left the Arizona fans roaring in applause. (289 Words)

19) The Big Fellas.
Written: Write about a Defensive Lineman in the playoffs, and how they will or did affect the outcome.
Graphic: Create a graphic about said DL and give stats of their season or playoff performances.

As a former Defensive Tackle, I love that this topic was added because DEs/DTs have a huge impact on the defense despite a lack of stats on the box score. Any GM can tell you that a good D-line has a massive impact as they make the rest of the defenders look better even when they’re not appearing to play well on paper. The result can leave many DL feeling underwhelmed, completely unaware of how much help they bring to their teams. So, it’s great to see them get some shout-outs and I hope all of the DBs and LBs will take a moment to show their linemen some love when picking Ultimus topics.

For us, that Defensive Linemen of choice is Ricardo Morris. When Andrew Reese defied conventional sports (and biological) logic by shredding 40 pounds and switching from DT to QB, Ricardo Morris came along shortly after to pick up the slack. And, so far, he’s been a much better DT than Reese ever was, racking up 8 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble in the play-offs. That may not sound too wild spread out over 3 games, but keep in mind that the Arizona defense was a force to be reckoned with and Morris rallied his fellow linemen to lead the rush against the opposing QB, making their teammates’ jobs easier. Morris’ forced fumble also came at a crucial time as the Liberty were just starting their final drive with only 1:21 left on the clock. The fumble was recovered by RB Farley Hank, but it did cost them a much needed down and force them to use a time-out that could have won them the game. A few downs later, a big-time tackle by Lucas Knight would effectively end the game for Philadelphia as they were left with no time-outs and the team was unable to get back into formation in time for another play. Had Morris not made that sack, Adriana Falconi could have found herself only 4 yards from a game-winning Touchdown with just enough time to score a touchdown and take the game away from the Outlaws.
