(S1) - Ultimus Week - Saliva^ - 07-11-2017 Bottom Third The San Jose Sabercats team had a decent showing in a pre-season, where they went 2-2 and the fans alongside with players absolutely had rights to wait at least a decent performance in an inaugural season. Fast forward, the team went 4-10 and didn't make the playoffs. What was the reason of it? First of all, the QB situation was very bleak - Christ never lived up to his hype and he wasn't a hard worker in a practice facility either. He lead team to 1-7 record before San Jose management brought Ethan Hunt via trade. It surely helped the team as Hunt managed to post a 3-3 record, but it was too late - San Jose lost their chances way before that trade happened. Also, the morale of this team was pretty much low and some players weren't pleased with the direction of SJS. The frustration resulted in Bowers Jr. and Hunt not wanting to play in San Jose anymore, which didn't help them either. Well, not everything went wrong in this season, but the aforementioned problems were enough to put the Sabercats to sleep. It remains to be seen when this team will be able to solve these problems, but I think they have a fine future with a loyal core who are interested to make San Jose great. Playoff Review Yellowknife Wraiths vs Colorado Yeti Both teams had an identical 8-6 record so it promised to be a grueling matchup. It indeed was grueling as both teams were doing very good at defence. Most of points came from field goal with Archibald Booter capitalising all his two FG to add 6 points to his team's scoreboard. It was more like a sudden death matchup, where one single mistake can kill all chances for competing for the Ultimus Cup. And Yellowknife was that team who made a mistake as DJ Law posted the first and only TD with Kicksit goal. 13-6 and Colorado made the finals. Arizona Outlaws vs Orange County Otters Like the North duo, these team had the same record, this time 9-5. This game as more fun as teams scored 49 points in total, although the first three quarters weren't much exciting. Zona was controling this game though as OC had too many turnovers. But the Otters still had a chance: they were down by 9 after three quarters and then Westfield+Turkenton duo managed to cut Zona's lead to two. But then the Outlaws offense went off with 21 unanswered points and took the game by a storm. 36-13 and the Outlaws in finals. Which lead us to... Championship Game Recap ...the Ultimus Cup game. The Yeti had a tough game in semi's, but the fans were expecting they can give Zona a run of their money. But the Outlaws' offense was on hot streak after OC and quickly scored a TD. And then Nuggent made his FG to make it 10-0 after first. By the way Nuggent went 3/3 from FG: he proved his legs aren't shaking even when the pressure comes up. The second Q, and the things went even worse for Colorado as Stormblessed posted another TD. Bojo Kicksit managed to give some hopes to the Yeti with 2/2 from FG to make it 16-6. Unfortunately for them, these were last points for Colorado. Nuggent restored the 16-point lead in the third quarter and the Yeti needed a Patriots' alike miracle to get back into this game. But it didn't happened - the 4th quarter TD from Washington was a nail on the coffin for the Yeti. 29-6, the Arizona Outlaws team won the Ultimus Cup in a pretty one-sided game and proved to everybody they are a better playoff team and have stronger nerves than any other team players. Also, we need to name Ryan Flock as the game hero as his interception return in start of this matchup just messed up Colorado's plans. Future Talent We have 85 prospects so far, hence it's hard to say who is the best of them. A lot of eyes are on Greg Clegane due to his solid 4-sack performance against the Outlaws, but there's also one more S2 waiver player who had a good day in the same game. This guy is being already recognized by some members and there's definitely a reason why Blaster Blade is being on the spotlight as well. He managed to shut the Otters' offence down with 4 tackles among with 1 tackle for loss and what's more important, 1 sack on Mike Boss which destoyed all Otters' chances for a comeback. His performance in finals wasn't much spectacular as Colorado's offence was wrecked by Flock's interception, but he still put his name to a game board with one tackle. Say what you want, but even one tackle is a contribution, especially if your team is winning. His regular season performance should be mentioned as well - an astonoshing 17 tackles for loss (good for tie 2nd with his teammate Tuck) plus 7 sacks shows us he is ready to become a defensive boss. He definitely is one of the contenders for being drafted in first round at least. Playoff Series MVP It's not an easy task to chose the MVP - I'm sure there are a lot of guys who played very well regardless of their team performance. So I'll just name Ryan Flock as the playoff MVP. He was a valuable defensive guy for the Outlaws in regular season and he didn't stop in post-season either. His stats weren't something at wow level, but it doesn't takes away his value in playoffs. First of all, he had a solid performance against the Otters: 4 tackles, 1 pass deflected and 1 interception against Boss' pass which ended in Nuggent's field goal. And then he took the crown in first minutes of the finals against Colorado when he completily wrecked their offense, especially Noble who made the bad pass to his hands. Not only Flock stole the ball, he managed to score a touchdown and that moment just killed the Yeti team. After that, Zona controlled that game and never gave their opponents a chance as Colorado players weren't even able to score a TD. I also want to praise Nuggent - his field goals were helping his team to gain the momentum and I could've picked his as the MVP as well, but I still think Ryan Flock was more valuable to his team. Their pass rush was nonexistent compared to the rest of the league. They were just unable to get any pressure from their defense and let opposing quarterbacks have all day to throw against them. They had the fewest amount of sacks for the year with 36 with the second lowest sack number being the other worst team in the league the SaberCats with 53. Not only did the Hawks struggle getting to the quarterback they also had issues with their offensive line. The Baltimore Hawks had the worst offensive line in the league this season and in my opinion is a large reason they collapsed after looking so strong in the preseason. The defense couldn't get off the field and then when the Hawks offense did get on the field the O-line failed to perform and the defense would come right back out. Lastly, the Hawks struggled the most due to multiple players that went inactive and the team didnt address this well through the waiver wire. Having an abysmal pass rush and Offensive line is one thing, but when the locker room isn't showing up anymore you know it is going to be a tough season. As for the Sabercats they had major issues on offence. They couldn't put up points the whole season and only scored a measly 15.2 points per gamelast in the NSFL. The defense wasn't much better as mentioned above they had the second lowest sack numbers and allowed the opponent to score an average of over 20 points a game on them. With this mix of bad offense and defense its no wonder they landed in the bottom third of the league. Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the match-ups. The Arizona Outlaws vs. Orange County Otters This match-up looked to be an interesting one from the moment it was set in stone. The Otters came out in the first quarter and put together a nice long drive that ultimately got stunted by penalties and forced a field goal. Arizona managed to get a safety later in the quarter and that was foreshadowing for the terrible day for Otters quarterback Boss. He would go on to throw 4 interceptions against the staunch Arizona defense. Arizona CB J. Williams was the defensive play-maker for Arizona coming up with two big interceptions, 5 passes defended, and 3 tackles for his team. The Colorado Yetis vs Yellowknife Wraiths This was a defensive battle of a game, both teams came to play on defense as both teams struggled to move the ball down the field. It was a slow git and grind game where each team fought hard for every yard that they got. However this was also a sloppily played game from both sides as the penalties began adding up. By the time the game was finished there were over twenty penalties for almost 200 yards which is really crazy because the Yellowknife wraiths barely had over 200 yards total in the game. The player of the game for this match-up would have to be Colorado Line Backer Jonathon Saint. He dominated the defensive side of the ball for his team and helped to stifle the Wraiths offense all day long. Championship Game Recap: Colorado Yeti were set to face off against the Arizona Outlaws in the first NSFL Championship. the game defining, momentum changing, play from this game happened early on in the first quarter. The Arizona team made a name for themselves on their staunch defense and it was the defense that came through for them in this game. Outlaws safety Ryan Flock was able to pick off Logan Noble and return it 24 yards for a touchdown. The Colorado quarterback was looking downfield on a screen pass and the safety followed his eyes and was able to fly in front of the pass. Flock read the play absolutely perfectly and translated it into six points for his team. This really goes to show just how crucial the safety position is on defense. This pick six really seems to take something out of Colorado as they never looked the same. The Colorado Yeti looked pretty deflated after this play and they really struggled to pull it back together. Noble seemed to shoulder the blame the hardest as he lost all confidence and was overthrowing receivers or throwing it into the dirt at his feet. His stats prove this loss of confidence as he was only able to complete 16 of 34 passes for the low total of 165 yards. The Yeti would only go on to score two field goals for the rest of the game as they were completely shut down by the crushing defense of Arizona. The Arizona Outlaws would go on to win the game and the Ultimus Trophy, beating the Colorado Yeti 29 - 6. Playoff Recap Infographic: ![]() Championship Banner Infographic: ![]() (S1) - Ultimus Week - mjdharder - 07-11-2017 Offensive Comparison: B. Rodriguez ![]() ![]() A football game is won in the trenches, and it’s obvious to see why when you look at the NSFL championship game between the Yeti and the Outlaws. The ability for an offensive line to impose their will on a defense cannot be understated. A pancake, or a well executed cut block can leave a defensive lineman wincing in pain and spending the rest of the game worried that the tape of them getting posturized will show up on ESPN. The performances of B. Rodriguez of the Yeti and A. Thomas of the Outlaws showed exactly how and why the Outlaws came up victorious. At first glance, the stats seem very similar. Rodriguez had 3 pancakes and allowed a sack, while Thomas had 3 pancakes and no sacks allowed. However, their play could not have been more different. Rodriguez allowed multiple hurries and pressures onto the quarterback, which forced the Yeti’s QB to have to throw the ball out early to avoid taking sacks. When your quarterback is hearing footsteps and seeing ghosts while making his progressions, you typically don’t win football games. This is what happened during the championship game, and what led to the interception thrown by Noble. On the flip side, you have the performance by Thomas. While he didn’t get many pancakes, he was dominant in the running game, constantly creating holes for the running backs. Trust me when I tell you that the 2.8 and 2.7 ypc that the running backs had was not the fault of Thomas. He was opening up holes for the running backs, they were just doing their best Trent Richardson impression and running directly into the wall of bodies. In the passing game, Thomas was just as excellent. He didn’t allow a single hurry, pressure or hit onto his quarterback. The clean pocket helped to win the game, and that was provided by Mr. Thomas. (S1) - Ultimus Week - Rich - 07-11-2017 Offensive Comparison: Compare one offensive player from each team in a series. The starting quarterbacks in the Ultimus Cup are two of the best in the league, but how do they compare. Logan Noble and Vincent Draxel. We’ll use their regular season stats for this. When you line them up, side-by-side, they appear to be fairly even. They both had very nearly the same amount of pass attempts. Noble had just 2 more attempts than Draxel. Noble completed 252 of 446, while Draxel completed 228 of 444. Noble has a bit of an advantage is completion percentage, with 56.5 to Draxel’s 51.4, which was the lowest in the league. So Noble is a bit more successful completing his passes, however, if we look at yardage, Draxel has a healthy lead over Noble. Draxel had 2858 passing yards, while Noble had 2603. Slight advantage to Draxel here. Next, touchdowns and interceptions. Draxel had more of both, with 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Noble had 15 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. From the looks of these numbers, Noble appears to be a more conservative passer, while Draxel would appear to be more aggressive with his throws, taking more risks, but for bigger rewards. Lastly, we have Quarterback rating. Noble’s rating was 77.2, while Draxel’s was 73.6. This is most likely due to Noble’s higher completion percentage and lower number of interceptions. So, what do we take away from this comparison? Both quarterbacks are quite good, but also quite different. Noble appears to be more conservative, while Draxel would appear to take more chances down field. I’d say both are pretty even, overall. Bottom Third: Write about why the Baltimore Hawks and/or San Jose Sabercats were not able to make the playoffs. The Baltimore Hawks did not get the result they wanted in Season 1. They finished the season with a record of 4-10, which is tied with the San Jose SaberCats for the worst in the league. What were the primary reasons for this? To begin with, the first thing that jumps out to me is their points allowed. They allowed the most points of any team in the league, 330. This is 39 points more than the next team, which just happens to be San Jose. It’s going to be tough to find success when you give up that many points. They weren’t quite so bad offensively. They scored 254 points of their own, which is good enough for third in the league. Let’s take a quick look at defensive stats, to see if we can find an outlier. Most of their team defensive numbers look to be fairly normal, except for one. Sacks. They have the fewest sacks of any team by a pretty large margin. They got to the quarterback just 36 times during the regular season. The next lowest team had 53. That is a problem. If you can’t put pressure on the opposition’s quarterback, they will most likely pick you apart. They will need to get some defensive line help next season to increase the pressure they get or they could be looking at more of the same in season two. Playoff Series MVP: Choose an MVP for one of the playoff series and write about why you chose them. For my money, there is no better choice for Ultimus Cup MVP than Vincent Draxel. I don’t think any single player had a greater impact on the outcome of that game than Draxel. He didn’t have a huge completion percentage, but it was good enough. 55.6 precent of his passes were completed. Those completions came at critical moments throughout the game. He was absolutely instrumental in the Outlaws converting 9 of 20 third downs. This kept the tired Yeti defense on the field much longer than they could handle. Maybe the most important number in his stat line is a zero. Zero interceptions. Limiting turnovers is one of the most important parts of being a good quarterback, and he didn’t let the Colorado defense back into the game with an errant pass. His one touchdown came in the second quarter. It was a five yard pass to Stormblessed that put the Outlaws ahead 16-0. After that, all Draxel had to do was make smart throws, protect the ball, and keep the clock moving. All of which he did, leading the Outlaws to a convincing 29-6 win over the Yeti. He finished the game with an impressive quarterback rating of 89, while racking up 271 passing yards. Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the matchups. First we had the Wraiths take on the Yeti. This was a tough, defensive game, with not a whole lot of scoring by either side. The two biggest plays came in the second half. Law hauled in an 11 yard pass from Noble to put the Yeti up 10-6. Then, midway through the fourth quarter, Bojo Kicksit nailed a 57 yard fieldgoal to increase the Yeti lead. Yellowknife couldn’t get back in it, losing to Colorado, 13-6. Next came the Otters and the Outlaws. This game was back and forth until the fourth quarter. Westfield caught a 10 yard pass from Mike Boss to pull the Otters within two points of the Outlaws. That’s when the Outlaws took over. Stormblessed too the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Then, a little more than a minute later, the Otters turn the ball over on downs, and Mackworthy scores on a 7 yard run. Then, on their last chance, Mick Boss is picked off by Jaylon Lee, who returns it 13 yards for a touchdown. This was a tough loss for the Otters. Then, in the Ultimus Cup, the Colorado Yeti faced the Arizona Outlaws. In the first quarter, Arizona set the tone of the game with an interception returned for a touchdown by Ryan Flock. After that, Colorado had a difficult time getting anything going on offense. A touchdown pass to Stormblessed in the second quarter and a touchdown pass to Wes Washington in the fourth quarter was more than enough to beat the Yeti. Final score, 29-6 for Arizona. (S1) - Ultimus Week - TheWoZy - 07-11-2017 Offensive Comparison. It's a showdown between two of the best quarterbacks in the league. Chris Orosz of the Yellowknife Wraiths and Logan Noble of the Colorado Yeti. These two quarterbacks have the best stats in the regular season. Their ratings are super close, with Orosz leading with 77.6 and Noble behind him with 77.2. They both have started in all 14 games. Noble has 1 more TD and 1 less Int than Orosz. But Orosz has a better pass completion pct than Noble by a very small margin and had more passing yards than him. So those two have a similar and they both finished with a 8-6 record this season. This series will prove who is the best quarterback in the league. In every football series, there's always a quarterback who play well during the game but the other quarterback would prove to be the best at the end of the game. Both QB plays well at home. So Noble and the Yeti are probably the favorite to win. But Orosz is not a type of player to back down that easily. They will both give us a great match and one will be declared the best QB in the league. Defensive Comparison. There's two cornerbacks in the league that have almost the same stats. Alex Hayden and Dermot Lavelle proved themself to be the best shutdown corner in the league after a successful season for both of them. They both had 4 interceptions and 18 passes defenfed. Those two can take out the best WR in the league. Dermot Lavelle has the chance to practice with his teammate Josh Garden, who's the best WR in the league. But Hayden has already shown us in the past that he can shutdown Garden. But LeClair can cause trouble for the Yeti so it's going to be a problem for the Yeti. Who Hayden should shutdown? The same goes for Lavelle. The Yeti have also a duo WR. Both of them play at the same pace and can be as good as Garden. But their playstyle might differ so it won't the same as during the practice for Lavelle. Also, both Hayden and Lavelle are strong on the blitz. The coach will need a plan against these two. They are both fast and strong. Hayden had 63 tackles which is the second most for a CB and Lavelle had 57. They will gave the QB a lot of problems in the series. It's very possible that the game will have a low percentage of pass completion. Bottom Third. When you look at the regular season standings, you see 4 teams that have the same record and 2 teams that have the same record but it's worst than the top 4. Why the Baltimore Hawks and the San Jose Sabercats failed to make the playoffs? First of, Baltimore has a terrible defensive team. They allowed the most yards and touchdown. They don't great talent on the backfield and upfront. They know what they have to do during the offseason. They are currently in a rebuild mode, trading away their DB. They have a good quarterback and some good wide receivers but they also need to focus on the offensive line. Sharpei will enter the S2 draft so they don't have much on the front. For San Jose Sabercats, they have done a great in acquiring Ethan Hunt. Their offense started to get going. Before the trade, their offense was terrible. James Christ was possibly the worst QB. He has only won 1 game in 9 starts. He has more turnovers than touchdown. How are you supposed to win with this QB. The quarterback is most respected position in this game. They are the one who lead the offense and the flow of the game. You don't have a good quarterback than good luck at winning a game. Now it would be a challenge for the Sabercats after the comment from Ethan Hunt about wanting to leave the team and Bowers Jr. getting trade. They need to bring back their offense at a top level. Future Talent. Blaster Blade was a great pick up for the Arizona Outlaws. They added that can compete on the same level as superstar Jayce Tuck. Both of them looks like an unstoppable combination. They had 25 sacks combined which by far the most from tag team DE. Blaster Blade loves to play with high speed. He's very good at faking and making smooth spin move to get by the OL. He strength is the toughest part to handle. He can rush in the middle and stop the running game. He accumulated 47 tackles during his campaign and 17 tackles for loss. He's lucky to play with Jayce Tuck. Learning from the best, it's not everyone that get this chance. Now he will become a veteran to a new team. I don't think he should be considered as a rookie. He showed that he was mature and can become a leader for a team. I think he can compete against Jayce Tuck for the #1 DE in the league. He has alot of potential. I know it's too early to say this but he has shown every game against every team that he can beat anyone. Of course, he will now be fighting against player such as Winchester and Robicheaux but who knows what he has learned from Tuck. Maybe he told him their weaknesses. Playoff Series MVP. Noble was absolutely on fire in this game. After intense game, Noble proved us that he was the best. He finished the game with 1 touchdown and 93.2 Rating. Both teams have a very strong defensive back and we knew it would be a great challenge for both quarterbacks. This game was very important for both them. They needed to show who was the best QB in the league. Orosz played in the first half but Noble was clutch and stole the show. On the opening of the third quarter, Noble looked unstoppable. On the touchdown drive, he went for 8 on 10 pass completed, for 52 yards. He threw a 11 yards touchdown to Law, the only touchdown of the game. Orosz struggle to help his team to get on track. They couldn't keep up the pace of the game. Later in their game, he was able to set up a 57 yards field goal for kicksit which gave them a 6 points lead. Noble and his offense were able to kill off the clock which gave Orosz and his offense less time for possession. It was impossible for them to make the comeback and Noble was the hero of the match. (S1) - Ultimus Week - Kristy95 - 07-12-2017 Bottom Third Now that the season is over many articles are focused on discussing the champions, the playoff teams and especially outlooks for last year. But rarely do we actually look what went wrong for those teams at the bottom. What did the Baltimore Hawks and the San Jose Sabercats do that cost them a playoff spot? Or more importantly, what didn't they do? Despite having a similar record, the Sabercats actually looked better towards the end of the season. They won the last game of the season, which was a game against the Hawks and also barely lost by one point the week before. The Sabercats actually had a somewhat decent offense at times, while the Hawks really seemed to struggle on offense and also barely ever managed to stop anyone. However, you also have to question the coaching for both teams. Both teams seemed unprepared at times, unable to make adjustments in the course of the games and at times undisciplined. This is a major problem when you try to be competitive or even make the playoffs. They need to improve in order to play better next season and to be a threat to make the playoffs, especially with expansion bringing more competition. Playoff Review The playoffs promised very interesting and tight match-ups. . This was definitely a very close game on paper, with both teams coming into the playoffs with an 8-6 record. The game itself was a defensive monster. Both teams struggled to put points on the board, especially aided by a combined 12 sacks in the game. One touchdown ended up being the big difference, when Logan Noble found DJ Law in the 3rd quarter. Another reason for the loss for the Wraiths ended up being their abysmal third down conversion rate - just one of thirteen. In the NSFC championship match, the Colorado Yeti met the Yellowknife Wraiths In the ASFC, the Orange County Otters met the Arizona Outlaws. Similar to the NSFC, the match-up looked close on paper, both teams had a 9-5 record in the regular season. However, the game did not prove to be close, with the Outlaws destroying the Otters 36-13. Not all of the points came from the offense though, as the Outlaws found various ways to score, despite a terrible third down conversion rate, which was 2 of 14. The Outlaws scored points through a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown, an interception return touchdown, a kickoff return touchdown, field goals and a safety. One could argue they dominated the game in every aspect. Thanks to the dominant performance, the Outlaws entered the championship game as the favorite. The Yeti had already struggled offensively in the previous round and their issues did not go away. They only scored 6 points, without a single touchdown and the game was never really close. The Outlaws dominated again and in the end secured the season one trophy with a score of 29-6 in an easy fashion. Championship Game Recap The Championship game saw the Colorado Yeti trying to stop the Arizona Outlaws. The Outlaws came into the game as the favorites and the Yet had struggled offensively the week before. The Yeti knew that mistakes would be costly, but just that happened early on in the first quarter. After both teams had disappointing first series, the Yeti were happy to get the ball back still tied at 0-0, when Logan Noble tried to find Hendrix for a short pass. However, Ryan Flock stepped between the quarterback and the receiver for the easy interception. Flock then evaded defenders and returned the interception for 24 yards and the touchdown. While the game never ended up being close, one has to wonder if the game is a closer affair without this amazing play. The Outlaws found themselves ahead 16-0 early in the second quarter and the game seemed decided already. The play had other impacts on the game as well, for example Noble never seemed to trust Hendrix after this and the receiver only ended up with 2 catches for 18 yards in an uninspiring performance. It might have also had an impact on Nobles confidence in general, as he ended up without a single touchdown in the most important game of the year. Offensive comparison We saw a very interesting Quarterback match-up in the NSFC championship game between the Colorado Yeti met the Yellowknife Wraiths. Logan Noble faced C. Orosz. While the game was very tight, we saw some big differences between quarterback play. Let's take a closer look. At first glance, you would not assume a huge discrepancy between quarterbacks in this game, as neither team scored a lot of points and only one touchdown was scored by either offense. But looking at numbers more closely paints a different story. Logan Noble completed 25 of his 37 passes (67% completion rate) for 229 yards and a touchdown. He had a 93.2 quarterback rating, which is decent. Orosz on the other hand only completed 11 of his 21 passes (52% completion rate) for 138 and no touchdowns, which was good for a 73.1 quarterback rating. Neither quarterback had an interception. The numbers are clear, Noble had a much better game. While Noble completed a lot of short passes (his average pass went for less than 10 yards), Orosz had a similar issue at times. While is average pass went 12.5 yards, four of his eleven completed passes went for 6 yards or less. All in all, Noble performed much better. Defensive comparison The championship game between the Colorado Yeti and the Arizona Outlaws had some fascinating match-ups and while the game was fairly one-sided, I want to highlight two defensive players who had a very similar game in terms of their numbers. Vinny Cox of the Yeti and Jayce Tuck of the Outlaws both had 3 sacks, one tackle for loss and both 5 or more tackles (5 for Tuck, 6 for Cox). But who had a bigger impact on the game? Tuck opened the game up with a sack in the first series, which immediately led to a punt. Cox's first sack also came in the first quarter, but on 1st down and ultimately the Outlaws managed another first down here, so the sack had less of an impact. In the end, this series actually lead to a field goal. In the third quarter, we see Cox have a bigger impact, as he also managed a sack on third down, causing a punt. It gave the Yeti some hope to turn the game around after the break. In the fourth quarter Cox got his third and final sack, on first down but it did lead to another punt. Tuck on the other hand ended up with two sacks very late, when the game was already out of reach. He had two sacks right after each other, on second and third down, causing a 4th and 28. While the Outlaws won the game, Cox had more impact with his sacks because two sacks from Tuck came with the game out of reach with less than 3 minutes to go. (S1) - Ultimus Week - Raven - 07-12-2017 Offensive Comparison: Compare one offensive player from each team in a series. Can be completed at any point Today we`ll be comparing two offensive players from a serie that was played in the NSFL playoffs this season. We`ll be looking at the Otters versus Outlaws game. So let's look at the quarterbacks and what they ended up doing for their team. The Otters played Mike Boss and the Outlaws had selected Draxel as their QB. Boss went for 41 passes and was only able to convert 17 of those in a successful pass. Which is only a 41.6% success rate. Draxel had 33 passes and was able to deliver 19 of those with success. A Rate of 57.6% which was better than Boss's. Both were able to set up one touch down. Boss had a better average yard per throw with 11.2 average and 190 yards total. Draxel had 183 yards total which totaled to 9.6 average yards. Draxel was intercepted 0 times in the game and Boss threw 4 of them. Draxel had the better overall game while Boss did put up more yards. Boss had also been tackled in the first period which resulted in safety points for the Outlaws. I think Draxel's play was the rallying factor for the Outlaws success and win in this game. Bottom Third: Write about why the Baltimore Hawks and/or San Jose Sabercats were not able to make the playoffs. Can be completed at any point Baltimore's season can only be descriped as tragic. While going 4-0 in the preseason and thus having a successful start to their game. This start absolutely did not translate over to the regular season. It wasn't until the fourth week in which the Hawks were able to pick up their first victory. They ended up finishing the season with a 4-10 record. What was the factor in this bad season? Looking at the defense of the Hawks we see alot of holes and weak spots. They were the team that allowed the post points scored on them in the regular season. 39 points more than the Saberkitties. Offense wasn't that much of a problem as they posted a pretty solid record with 254 points for them. Which was 3rd best in the league. Showing that their inability to defense well was cancelling out their offensive potential. Looking at offense though we see that Baltimore did score the lowest amount of touchdowns in the season. So was this offensive success also thanks to superstar kickerman Turkleton? We`ll have to see how the draft influences the Hawks. They surely will be looking at adding pieces to their defense line and who knows if there will be any spicy trades coming during the offseason. Playoff Series MVP: Choose an MVP for one of the playoff series and write about why you chose them. Must be completed after the playoff series you write about My MVP of my chosen playoff series will be Adrienne Nugent. Who played the role of kicker in the Otters versus Outlaws series in the ASFC conference match up. Nugent played a big role in the dominant victory by the Outlaws. He was able to score all of the extra point oppurtunities he was presented with. He was also able to kick 2 field goals in without a problem. There was a 41 yarder field goal he missed, but that's not important. What is inportant is how with those 2 field goals and the 4 extra points the lad was able to get 10 points for his team. Pretty good numbers to contribute in he 36 to 13 win for the Outlaws. Kickers don't always get the respect they deserve, but I know better. Nugent is the thriving force with the Outlaws and his kicks motivate the squad to go for the best. Nugent's field goals were a 19 yarder and a 29 yarder. Not the toughest distances to beat, but in high pressure games, it shows he's able to keep his cool and finish his kicks without a problem. This is why I think Nugent is this playoff series MVP. Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the matchups. Must be completed after the Championship Game This seasons conference finals were between the Orange County Otters and the Arizona Outlaws, the other final was between the Yellowknife Wraiths and the Colorado Yetis. This game was a battle of the kickers. The final score was 6-13, Booter kicked home 2 field goals recording the 6 points for his team. Bojo Kickshit also scored two fieldgoals aswell as an extra point. Plus the TD was the security for the Yeti's to come out of this game victorous. The game between the Otters and Outlaws started off quiite evenly in the first two periods, until the Outlaws popped off at the end of the fourth period. A kickoff return, interception and return run all contributed to to a huge lead and Nugents kicks added to it. The final was between the Yeti's and the Outalws. This game was never really a tight one, the outlaws took an early lead, then Bojo Kicksht tried to fighting back with two field goals, but were never able to tie or get a lead. The Outlaws took off after and just didnt let the Yeti's get back in the game. They took the game convincingly with a score of 29-6 and won the first ever cup. Playoff Recap Infographic: Make a graphic displaying the results of the playoffs. Must be completed after the Championship Game ![]() (S1) - Ultimus Week - Player1 - 07-12-2017 Offensive Comparison Boss vs. Draxel was a highly anticipated faceoff leading up to the Solis Cup. Both QBs had been plagued by drama all year but were on two of the most successful teams in the league. Mike Boss had begun the season by throwing 6 interceptions in a game, was then benched, and then won his starting job back only to continue throwing no shortage of picks. For Draxel's part, he is a bit of a whiner and was once sacked so many times in a game that he threatened retirement, though he no doubt regrets that now as the Outlaws hoist the Ultimus Cup. There were plenty of questions about both of these players prior to the ASFC championship. Would Boss ruin his team's chances with his picks, and would Draxel be able to hold up against the hungry Otters D-line? The answer is yes and no in that order. Mike Boss showed he's still Mike Boss by throwing 4 picks which ultimately made the game an ugly blowout, and the Outlaws continue to be bad at blocking as Draxel was sacked 5 times. It's hard to kick a bad habit, but you'd hope for these two players expected to lead their teams in the future, that Season 2 will be a bit prettier than Season 1. Code: Word Count: 217 Bottom Third With a solid offensive line, the best single LB in the game, and a solid season by QB Ethan Hunt and his receiving cast the Cats' poor record has been a tough pill to swallow for San Jose fans. So where did the team go wrong to end up in a distant third in the ASFC? For starters, the team did not travel well, winning just one game on the road all season. They also played poorly against ASFC opponents, winning one game against the Outlaws and the other three cross-conference. The Otters in particular had the Cats' number, sweeping all 4 games and never allowing more than 10 points by San Jose. While the SaberCats defense seems statistically impressive, they always managed to cough up big points when they needed to lock down, and the offense just couldn't keep up with it. There's no doubt that Season 2 will be stressful for San Jose's management as now Ethan Hunt has declared he will not remain past his contract. If they don't turn things around this offense it could get even worse in the future as they will have to contend with the defending champion Outlaws and an Otters team that will be out for revenge. Code: Word Count: 206 Future Talent One player who has been drawing a lot of attention for the S2 draft is Otters waiver OL Gregor Clegane. Clegane caused a surge of drama by declaring that he would hold out on any team that picked him in the first round other than the Otters. If I had done that, everyone would say "Who cares?", but Clegane has backed himself up all year by delivering physical performances with lots of pancakes. He showed his value in the playoffs as well bringing 4 pancakes with no penalties or sacks allowed. You can't understate the value of a true anchor at Offensive Tackle, and Clegane will be that player wherever he lands. The old adage is that defense wins championships, and while the Outlaws didn't stray from that this season games are ultimately won by the big guys on both sides of the ball. The Otters ran well and gave up just 2 sacks in the ASFC game, but were let down by another turnover heavy game that the Outlaws were happy to capitalize on. If Clegane continues to improve he will be a bodyguard to a QB and a bulldozer in the running game, both of which will make him a star in the post-season. GMs will have to decide if his threat to hold out is genuine or just posturing to get himself an easy road to the Otters where he seems happy. Code: Word Count: 235 Playoff Review NSFC Championship - Wraiths vs. Yeti The Glacies Cup game was certainly the more interesting and close of the two conference championships. Both teams came into it trying to avoid mistakes, and both managed to walk out with no interceptions or fumbles. The downside to that was that only one touchdown was scored all game, in what was otherwise a defensive chess match focused on getting into field goal range. The Yeti moved the ball much more effectively, out-passing the Wraiths by nearly 100 yards and almost doubling their rushing. In the end, the Wraiths played it a little too safe as they were always within reach but never delivered. ASFC Championship - Otters vs. Outlaws In what has become the most fiery rivalry in the league, the Otters finally cracked the code to defeating Arizona in the Week 14 season ender. That gave fans hope for the Solis Cup and made the rivalry even more intense. Unfortunately for Orange County, yet another test against Arizona's brutal home field advantage ended just as you would expect. The Outlaws secondary picked off Mike Boss 4 times, but the game was still nearly even at the start of the 4th quarter. A fantastic kickoff return by Stormblessed put the game away, as Arizona took two victory laps scoring a run and a pick six to embarrass the Otters. Ultimus Cup - Yeti vs. Outlaws The Yeti never gave the Outlaws very much trouble, as the ASFC proved to be the better conference this season. After getting out to a 16-0 lead, the Outlaws took their foot off the gas and allowed a couple of chip shots. Insult was added to injury at the end of the game as the Outlaws humiliated the Yeti by pulling Vincent Draxel and letting newly converted QB King Bronko line up under center. The practice paid off as he was able to throw a touchdown after the Yetis were already done for. |
