Ultimus Week - S10 - JVMjrDOT - 10-07-2018 PBE PT Robbed The Yellowknife Wraiths should have absolutely made the playoffs over the Orange County Otters. The Wraiths finished the season with a record of 8-6, while the Otters were 7-7. The points differential was even more telling. The Wraiths had a differential of +54, while the Otters finished with -52. Quite the opposite, and it's very telling of the quality of the teams. If you want to go even deeper, it becomes even more clear. The Wraiths and the Otters played each other three times total: once in the preseason and twice in the regular season. The Otters managed to squeak out a win in the preseason, winning 34-28. Everyone knows that the preseason is more for the players to get back to game speed, so I wouldn't put much weight on this game. In the regular season, which is arguably way more important, the Wraiths won both games by deciding margins. In the first game, the Wraiths won 27-3, and in the second game, the Wraiths won 30-0. These weren't even close, and clearly showed who was better between the two teams. The Wraiths were hurt by starting the season 0-3, where two of those losses came from the Hawks and the Second Line, two teams who ended up playing each other in the championship. Playoff Series MVP The MVP for the Baltimore vs New Orleans series is actually the kicker / punter for the Baltimore Hawks, Turk Turkleton. I say this for a couple reasons. The main one is that he was automatic with his short field goals, mainly the extra points and 20-29 yarders, but also a few long ones as well. Another reason was that Baltimore didn't really have many stand out performances on either side of the ball. Their quarterback, Avon Blocksdale, was 27/40 for 383 yards and 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, which is typically a fantastic game, but we're used to seeing so much more from him. Owen Taylor also had 123 yards rushing, along with a 10 yard reception, but he had to rush the ball 33 times to get those 123 yards. He wasn't very effective all game, and couldn't find a way to break free for a long gain. All this being said, Turkleton was the one to step in when his team needed him the most. He managed to kick all 5 field goals, including the two extra points from the touchdowns that Blocksdale scored. I find that kickers aren't appreciated enough, so I wanted to make sure that Turkleton got his. Going To Disneyland Turk Turkleton was the MVP of the Ultimus. He had never been to Disneyland, so he was especially excited when the team announced that they'd all be going the week following their Ultimus win. Turkleton was determined to go on as many rides as possible, and therefore didn't want to go on a ride twice, no matter how fun it was. The first ride he went on was Space Mountain, a fan favourite. The classic roller coaster tossed Turkleton every which way, but he loved every minute of it. He next went on Its A Small World, better known as the teacup ride. This one didn't sit well with Turkleton, as he almost vomited after getting out of his seat. I suppose any kind of spin rides don't agree with Turkleton, so it was something to keep in mind going forward. He went through most of Disneyland's rides, and then stopped briefly in California Adventure. He wanted to try California Screamin', since he loved Space Mountain so much. It was by far his favourite ride of the trip, and he loved the loop da loop. He's really hoping for a championship win next year, mainly so they can go back to Disneyland! Ultimus Week - S10 - Oles - 10-07-2018 Robbed: It feels like every season some NSFC team is being talked about as robbed and just barely missing the playoffs. This time that's the Wraiths, they failed to make the playoffs after a change at QB where they got younger and acquired Brad Pennington to be their QB of the future. They started off horribly, losing their first 3 games to the Hawks, Outlaws, and Second Line. One of these names is not like the other, and the Wraiths dropped a very winnable game in Arizona that did not help their season out. After a 4 game win streak the team was looking like a playoff team once again, and after a loss in Baltimore they won 2 more games. Then they had another devastating loss which was in San Jose. Another game where they should have been pushing towards the playoffs caused them to falter and lose their chance at controlling their own destiny to the playoffs. The final nail in the coffin came in week 13, when they lost in Colorado in what was a playoff deciding game, the Yeti were too far ahead of the Wraiths who just couldn't do enough and got in their own way a bit too much as they missed the playoffs. Playoff Series MVP: Vikian Marmaledov turned the tide of the NSFC Championship game in 1 play, and was the MVP because of it. Good defense is always great and when the defense shows up in the postseason it can be a huge momentum shift. After trading blows constantly Vikian got a huge interception which he returned for a touchdown. The score prior was 27-21. so by getting that interception he made it 34-21 and a 2 score game. This allowed the Hawks to have breathing room, and a necessary cushion with how both teams were playing in the game. Vikian was a standout player even if he isn't appearing much on the stat sheet, and the momentum gained from that play was able to help them win the game and go to the Ultimus. There are a whole list of scenarios that might have played out had Vikian not intercepted the ball, but we are only talking about what actually happened, and not what was a possibility had it gone differently. Vikian made the path to the Ultimus clear for the Hawks, as he pushed them over the edge and got them a game changing score late in the game to keep the upset from happening and Baltimore's chance at an Ultimus alive for this season. Coming in at 13-1, the team had home field advantage and was widely considered the favorites to win it all. The Yeti were looking to play spoiler and make their first Ultimus since way back in season 1. The Hawks and Yeti were exchanging blows all game until the 4th quarter, the Yeti would take an early lead and then Hawks would answer right back, and at the end of the third quarter the Hawks had the edge at 24-21. They would kick another field goal and then the defense would step up as Vikian Marmaledov would seal the deal with a pick 6 in the game. The Yeti could not come back and eventually lost 37-28. The next matchup is between the Second Line and the Otters. The Otters aren't the team of old that was a dominant force, while the Second Line are looking for their second Ultimus victory. There isn't much to be said about this game, as the Second Line held the Otters to 3 points and put up 10 themselves in what was a defensive battle that saw the Second Line win 10-3. The Ultimus matchup saw the Second Line and Hawks fight for the title a second straight season. There was a kicking clinic put on today, as Turk Turkleton put up 5 field goals fort he Hawks. The Hawks were able to ride Blocksdale and Turkleton to their first title in history, winning 29-23. (266 words) Going to Disney: Turk Turkleton kicked his way to Disney Land after his Ultimus performance. In a close contest between the Second Line and Hawks, Turkleton made sure it stayed in favor of the Hawks. Turkleton made 7 kicks in the Ultimus, 2 extra points, and 5 field goals. He accounted for 17 of the Hawks 29 points in the contest, and as we saw with the Second Line, having a reliable kicker is a fantastic as you're not losing points, like they did when Peg Leg missed the extra point after Leclair's 18 yard touchdown reception. Turkleton was able to control the game despite only being on the field for a few minutes a game, and he did not disappoint the Hawks as they won their first championship. Now, as for Turkleton's trip to Disney Land, it really wasn't any different than the normal person's trip. Photos with the cast members such as Micky and others, signing some autographs as people recognized the kicker, riding the rides and enjoying the sight and experiences that Disney brings. Disney is a place to enjoy everything that you enjoyed as a kid, and Turkleton did exactly that knowing that his team that was full of sadness from seasons of choking finally came out on top and won it all.
