Sitting down with a young athlete is never an easy thing. The stig remembers times when people would sit down with him and tell him that his focus needed to be elsewhere, or that he would never make it. When your young, your hard headed, and sitting down to speak to someone can be challenging. But one of the biggest pieces to this conversation would be to use the positives this individual already has going for them. If they are that determined for something, the best thing is to spin their determination into something useful. Being a professional athlete isn’t just about being athletically gifted or being in the gym more than the next person. Sure, it helps but continuing your education gets you into schools you may not have had a chance at. Maybe this family member doesn’t get a full ride to a D-1 school, but he gets an academic scholarship and walks on and proves himself. Being an athlete again isn’t just physical, its mental, academics can’t set you up for so many challenges in the future. This is the type of conversation I would have.

If there was a young member of my family who aspired to follow in my footsteps I would be delighted. Once seeing that they are starting to mess up though and let their grades slip among other things, I think it would be necessary to have a talk with them about this. The talk would be pretty simple and straight forward. Life is all about choices. The choices you make always impact your situation in life whether you are young or you are old. As a kid, and especially one that has aspirations as high as being a professional athlete, it is important to understand how your choices impact your current situation and future. Pro athletes do not get to where they are by luck, rather they get there by hard work. If this family member is struggling now with their work ethic, I would point out how much harder things get in terms of a daily schedule as they get older, and that choosing to work hard now will help them keep that same mentality as an adult.

Doc is no stranger to helping out the youth, he is an advocate for after school programs that not only focus on bettering your athletic skills but also offer a place for kids to go and get extra tutoring as well. That being said, it gets lonely on the farm sometimes. Doc would take this opportunity to take his young relative on full time to show them what it's really like to be a pro athlete. You can’t just focus on the skills you have, you need to focus on the full picture of what is going on around you. It’s not always about strength, it's about leadership and knowledge when you get into the field. He would do this in two ways, work on the farm that needs to get done daily, and everything that goes into that. Followed up by the training of your mind, reviewing tapes, looking for opportunities, reading and knowing a playbook, what to look at for your field vision. These are the things that will get you to be a professional in the big leagues. Hard work and dedication.

In some ways Quaid would be the ideal mentor in a situation helping out a young aspiring athlete, but in other ways it could lead to some unsound advice. Quaid’s background is an unheralded small school athlete that was under the radar at every step until the DSFL draft. He picked up the game of football quickly thanks to impressive physical tools such as his size and athleticism. So I would ask “does this young fellow have the potential to be physically up to par to play professional football”? If the answer is “no” Quaid would urge the youngin’ to enjoy high school and college football as much as possible, but get a decent education along the way and not totally half ass it. If he has legitimate potential, such as Quaid did, I would say go all in on the professional dream. The rewards are much greater than the risk. Do well enough to get passing grades through school, hell, pay somebody to do your homework and take good notes in class. With the odds stacked against you, you have to go all in on every aspect of football. Education is a lifelong thing, but professional football is only a thing for men in their 20s and 30s. Spicy Ron handles children on a daily basis. Quite literally man-handling them in his youth football league endeavors. However, once in a while. The iron sharpens iron, and some of these young lads end up becoming stronger through their constant beatings at the hands of a 22 year old man on the field. Ron enjoys taking these students under his wing and helping them after practices. Running 1 on 1 Oklahoma drills in the parking lot concrete until they feel strong enough to move up in the world. Ron anticipates being able to play alongside some of his little league team mates in the ISFL one say when he's in his 40s. Showing all these new kids that they can do whatever they want if they take enough beatings in exchange for it. Ron believes there are many team mates now that have the shops to make it one day. ,

If I had a fellow competitor of a younger age tell me that they aspired to be a professional athlete in the same vein as myself my words to them would be swift and to the point; "Don't." It's not worth it, I'd tell them. To have the eyes of the world upon you at all times? To be viewed as nothing more than a spectactle to be mocked or a commodity to be traded or dropped at the whim of a controlling, authoritarian figure is no life. Become something cool, like an IT worker or a nurse or some kind of dog groomer. A professional athlete is no life to aspire to. And should your grades be an issue then don't worry, for I AM a professional athlete. I receive only the finest of strength and conditioning. I am one of the strongest people you know. And if your grades don't improve I will impose upon you a minimum of 500 paddlings until such time as your grades rival that of the top member of your class.
