*Spencer Lawes announces retirement from AFL - HollowHead - 09-08-2018

Sitting at the centre of a table with a microphone in front of him is Spencer Lawes, a young promising midfielder who plays for the Geelong Cats Football Club. Sitting slightly slouched in his chair wearing a blue suit with pinstripes and perching a pair of expensive looking Persol sunglasses on top of his mop of curly blonde hair. Sat on his left fidgeting was a smaller man with thinning hair and the stubble that was telling of a man who hadn’t shaved for a couple of days and wearing a shirt that had not been ironed properly. This was a hastily called press release and it was clear Spencer Lawes was the only person in the room who was prepared, it had in fact only been arranged an hour and a half before. A flurry of camera flashes causes the smaller of the men to squint as he pulls a microphone attached to the table towards his mouth.

“I’d like to thank you all for coming here at such short notice. My client Spencer Lawes, tells me that he has an announcement that he would like to make to yourselves, the media.”

Spencer grinned a big toothy smile and grabbed the microphone with one hand and addressed the eagerly awaiting journalists.
“I would like to announce with immediate effect, my resignation from this football club. The club no longer matches my ability as a player and is not capable of affording the salary required to keep me here. Plus, I want a new challenge, which is why I am also announcing my intention to play in the NSFL.” A collective gasp filled the room as his words dawned on the collection of journalists. His agent gave him a double take, clearly not expecting him to say that. Cameras flashed so quickly it was almost like giant fireflies had entered the room. Mobile phones came out of pockets and began frantically texting, emailing and tweeting trying to get the word out as quickly as possible.

“Naturally I see myself filling both the Punter and Kicker role, teams won’t have to fill an extra position on their rosters with me around. My time here in the AFL should show that I have the biggest boot in the country and the accuracy to match it.” Lawes said with a cheeky look in his eyes. He was being cocky but he was right out of all his attempts on goal he had only missed a handful and those were from outside the goal line. He knew he was talking a big game but he was confident he could walk the walk as well.

“I know this seems like it is coming out of the blue but honestly it is not. I have actually done my research, sent out my game tapes to scouts and general manager, they all seemed to like what they saw and I plan on starting in the DSFL to get some knowledge and experience in the game. Honestly, I fully expect to be fielding phone calls as soon as I step off the plane.” He stated punctuating his points with a point of the finger.

“I have to add to this, I will not be the first cross-code football player moving from the AFL, we have had players go onto have successful careers in rugby league, rugby union and even in the NFL. Names that may come to mind are Sav Rocca, Chris Ryan and local boy Ben Graham.”

Lawes straightened himself, rearranged the microphone and then pulled his sunglasses down to cover his eyes. “So yeah. That’s my plan. I’m leaving the AFL and Geelong for the NSFL and North America, then I’m going to tear it up over there. Oh yeah here’s a bit more warning for my next press release. I will be fielding questions when I arrive in North America.” He stood up then bent down to the microphone; “I will not be fielding any questions today” and walked out the room leaving his agent sat there stunned for a few seconds until he sheepishly followed his client out of the room while the journalists shouted after the two trying desperately to get an answer to their questions.
