*Denzel Sutton Declares For SMU - Daybe - 09-16-2018
Five star college recruit Denzel Sutton has declared for the SMU Mustangs. He will play with the Mustangs in 2026, and plans to make a big impact.
So does he have a connection with Denver Broncos receiver and former Mustang, Courtland Sutton?
The answer is yes.
“Of course, man. He’s my brother. So when I was deciding a college, SMU was already very high on my board. Two other colleges I was looking at was Arizona State and Penn State. Plenty of SEC schools reached out to me, I don’t want to join something big. I want to be part of a grassroots movement that sweeps the team, turns them into something great. So I wanted to go to SMU from the getgo.”
SMU finished the season a measly 6-7, going 6-6 in the regular season and losing a bowl game.
The Nittany Lions, one of the other teams high on his list finished 10-4, and the ASU Sun Devils went 8-5.
So who is Sutton really?
Well, Sutton is big and physical. That’s the defining trait. When you look at a guy who’s currently 6’4” with room to grow, that’s a big body catching passes for you. I figure he’s going to be a monster near the goal line, with potential to be a WR similar to the likes of Calvin Johnson or Andre Johnson.
Sutton says he plans to stay all four years with the squad, helping the team out however he can.
“Some people tell me, ‘strike iron while it’s stoll hot!’ ‘You never know when you’ll get injured!’ Well, truth be told, I’d rather stay loyal to the team who brought me in and gave me an opportunity for day one. I value loyalty.”
Sutton was an Ironman athlete in high school, playing as a strong safety and a wide receiver, while also handling returning duties.
“Yeah, I was everywhere in high school. I wanted to give my team the best shot to win. So I’d do whatever coach told me.”
It is noted that his strong suits are strength, catching, and agility, while he lacks pure speed to blow by defensive backs.
“I don’t have to be the fastest guy on the field to make big plays. I’ll get open by being physical and taking advantage of mismatched against smaller defensive backers. Because if you give me a three, four inch advantage, I’m going to come down with the ball. I don’t care.”

This comes after getting sacked by three guys with less than 400 TPE four times, once by a defensive back, and three times by a linebacker who was in the league when Ryan was in middle school.
