To start, I will be continuing The NSFL Newsletter throughout the season, I'm just taking a break to finish working on the NSHL forums (coming January 1st!). Now, onto the media!

The San Jose Sabercats had an interesting offseason. It's not every day you go from picking 1st overall in a draft to trading 2 1st round picks for players. In fact it normally shouldn't happen, right?

It was the perfect storm for both Yellowknife and San Jose, starting with Chad Pennington informing Yellowknife management that he would be leaving Yellowknife in the coming offseason, along with Thad, and that they should look into trading them in order to get for them rather than having them walk for nothing at the end of the season.

Skip forward ONE DAY and the phones are hot! The Wraiths have given priority to San Jose due to that being Chad and Thad's top free agent destination as a thank to the players for sticking with the team for so many seasons, but conincidentally the Sabercsts are offering the best trade package. But why is San Jose so interested in these players given their current state?

No team wants to be in last place, but you can only fit so many active players on your roster. At a point draft picks start to lose their value because players that don't get put in plays will tend to go inactive. With nearly every spot on the roster spoken for by an active San Jose management elected to trade for players already nearring their prime that would help the team now. Thad Pennington is a fast and strong safety who has been learning to play the position with the instruction of Cam Taylor his entire career and is widely regarded as the GOAT of the DSFL. Chad Pennington is one of the top line backers in the league and is coming off of a defensive player of the year season. Neither are regressing yet and should be good players well into San Jose's window of Ultimus winning opportunity.

With this trade San Jose's defense is entirely solidified and all that is left is to wait for Joliet Christ and his wide receivers to be to the point where they can carry the offense themselves (and in my opinion that point is only one season away at the most!).

A weird trade to those sitting on the outside of the San Jose war room, but those who have had an inside look will start to understand why San Jose made this trade and should be worried about them jumping up the standings.

The only bad thing I will say about SJS' trades is that their DL, which was already their weakest position group, got weaker in the trade by losing Chambers. Long term, this won't hurt them at all, since he was on borrowed time, but given that they also acquired Bayley, it seems they were all in for this year.

I guess I may as well retire then cause I'll never be as good as you and your 4 rings if I don't even scare you

Even if your retired your next character counts towards the ring total so don't worry

Understand your point, but easily could run a 3-3-5 or Nickel formation. Last year, Philly, who had the top defense ran Nickel with a LB at DE.

It’s easily able to be done, so SJ’s defense is looking scary.
