*What the Fuck Just Happened: Offseason S12/13 - AdamS - 01-19-2019 Well.......that's some shit ain't it? A trade that rocked the entire league and left everyone with questions on questions on questions. That's okay. I'm here. I've got you nestled deep in the bosom of my knowledge and expertise, cuddled snuggly against my rock solid understanding. I'm gonna get you through this. First, let's hit the particulars. Colorado receives Blackford Oakes Verso L'Alto 5M in S13 Cap space Baltimore Receives S13 COL R2 S14 COL R1 S14 COL R2 S15 COL R2 Got all that? Good. Let's start with what Baltimore is really getting here. The #11 pick in the upcoming draft for starters. While not an especially deep draft, it's definitely got enough firepower for this to be a very valuable pick. There's a strong opportunity for Baltimore to pick up an important piece to their future here. Maybe one of the two active kickers. Maybe another defensive player. Maybe another of the many Wide Receivers once they handle a larger need in round one. This pick gives them tremendous flexibility. On top of that they picked up Colorado's 1st rounder for next season. This would be the S14 draft that's starting to look like an absolute monster with several very big recreates and a smattering of already created players and others on the horizon. YUGE. And if that class keeps growing like we expect? Well, the Hawks picked up the 2nd round pick in that same draft. The Hawks could be looking at 4 picks in the top 16 of a very heavy draft. And then a 2nd rounder in s15 for good measure. The Hawks got a LOT here. So what did Colorado get? Well, let's take a quick step back in the ol' time machine and set some context here. A few days ago Colorado was involved in a different trade. The trade where they gave up the #3 pick and their S15 1st rounder and an incidental player for Brian Mills. For a season. With that in play, they made this trade with Baltimore and acquired Blackford Oakes and Verso L'Alto. What does that mean in real terms though? Well on offense, they added the best TE in the league and likely shoe-in for #2 TE all time. For a team that already threw the ball 3rd most in the league last season, this is a big deal. The Yeti threw the most TDs but also had the 2nd worst accuracy. L'Alto changes that equation a fair amount on his own. With Miller being Miller and Bishop coming into his 2nd year this pass offense just became top tier. That's what happened. That's more drives continued by a superior pass catching threat. That's less of the sim forcing the ball to the lower tier players too. That's big. On defense you added the league's 2nd leading tackler in Mills and the league's leader in ints and PDs in Oakes. Two guys who you may recall teamed up to win a few Ultimus'. Alongside this, Colorado has a number of young guys coming up who will be better than they were last year. This team went 6-8 with 3 players over 450 TPE. Now they have at least 6. And Bishop and Hornbacher (also signed in the offseason) aren't far off. But Adam...look at the cost. Look at the fallout. Look at that fucking tampering clause!!! Okay, okay. Let's all breathe deeply and clutch our pearls less tightly. Let's talk about the clause. For the duration of the single season that both L'Alto and Oakes are signed with the Yeti, the Hawks are allowed to talk about possible signing with the team. They'll be the only ones allowed to (other than the Yeti themselves). It's a brilliant stroke by the Hawks management that continues to make me laugh every time someone tries to negotiate with them. HEY! GMS! HE HAS FUCKING PROFESSIONAL NEGOTIATION TRAINING. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING. YOU'RE NOT GOING TO OUTSMART HIM. Adlerlärm. Okay..so...aside from the clause, the Yeti sold the most draft capitol we've ever seen in one offseason. As the expert on the topic, I'm frankly astonished. But I see it. I know, the hooplah currently is treat the possibilities as all negative. But let's talk about how this could go right for the Yeti. Best case scenario is that these moves are the difference between 6 wins and 10. And let me tell you...that's not farfetched at fucking all. They have home field, make it to the Ultimus and finally win. If that happens and everything else goes wrong, the question will become whether or not it was worth it. The Philly problem. But that's assuming everything goes wrong. And by everything goes wrong I mean that Oakes, Mills, and L'Alto leave in the offseason. If you win the Ultimus and that happens, there's an argument you succeeded. No one can take that away. I want to address something no one seems to really be talking about though. If you're the Yeti you probably don't make this move unless you feel very strongly that you can get at least one if not two of those three to stay. Add Hornbacher in here as well though the picks didn't affect his joining the team. If you can get some or all of them to come on board and go all in with the Yeti for their remaining seasons, you've got a very real chance to compete. Now..like is aid before I get the hooplah right now. Everyone is basically just assuming they're gonna run straight back to teams that already traded them away. Even when said teams only made those trades with the approval of the players in question. And maybe they do. Maybe this is nothing more than the single most expensive rental since Nola spent a 2nd round draft pick on a 6 game rental of an overrated WR who didn't win them an Ultimus and then promptly tried to steal players on the sly before he immediately went back to his old team. 3 regressing players for 6 1st and 2nd round picks. At the end of the day..there's only 3 people who can decide how this plays out after the season ends. This could turn out to be the disaster people are foretelling. Or...it could turn into something else. Oakes is viable for another 2-3 seasons. L'Alto and Mills for 3-4. If you somehow convince them to stay on board (and that's 3 amazing LR presences by the way) and you compete and contend for those years, maybe win a ring or two......well....you can do a lot that those picks wouldn't necessarily buy you. You can convince free agents to come in. You can completely revitalize a culture. You can pull the absolute ballsiest risk v reward moves in league history by a mile. The risk is insane. No doubt. The blood they've already spilled on this field is immense. But this battle is just beginning. It's not over. And the Yeti management has had two seasons of proving themselves to be among the most cunning and canny gameplanning teams in the league. Having this kind of firepower could really go somewhere. Especially if they convince said firepower to stick around and invest their remaining careers there. or another few seasons for the young roving player in Hornbacher. If the supposed inevitable disaster comes, we'll address it then. I can't imagine that ends well for a lot of people. But we're not there yet. That's the end of this book. This is just the first chapter. *What the Fuck Just Happened: Offseason S12/13 - ADwyer87 - 01-19-2019 ![]() *What the Fuck Just Happened: Offseason S12/13 - majesiu - 01-19-2019 you haven't even seen everything yet *What the Fuck Just Happened: Offseason S12/13 - nunccoepi - 01-22-2019 L'Alto will be alive for as long I can keep him above 150tpe *What the Fuck Just Happened: Offseason S12/13 - SwagSloth - 01-22-2019 This offseason has been crazy. Between this and other deals, Yeti basically forfeited the next 2 drafts. That's as "win now" as it gets. If it works, they win an Ultimus. If it doesn't, at least it will remove the shadow cast over that one former GM who traded two 1sts for a LB. At this point, I don't even remember the name of the GM. Or the LB. |
