The Lazy Luchadore

Tijuana's most experienced armchair QB since S13!

Luchadores Finish Season Hot, but All Eyes are on the Cup Now

It seems like a long time ago that the Tijuana Luchadores were in the dumpster of the DSFL. After a 1-4 start it looked more like the team was slugging it out with the SolarBears for the prestigious "not last place" rather than competing for the championship. The season took a sharp, and maybe not entirely unexpected, turn for the better as the Luchadores would subsequently go 6-3 and easily secure a playoff berth.

There's a whole article to be written about the magic and mistakes of the Luchadores regular season, but who cares about the past when the future is still wide open? Tijuana heads into the playoffs but without the cushy comforts of home-field advantage. At 7-7 they're the lowest seeded playoff team and will have to upset the league's best San Antonio Marshals on the road, a feat they did accomplish once this season. The talking heads and experts have all penciled the Marshals in on this one but, take it from a true fan, the Luchadores aren't done until the clock hits 0. They can pull this off, and a risky gambler will see the potential for a huge upset here. How will they do it, you ask? Well, allow me to explain in this conveniently categorized format.

For starters, their offense is unpredictable

I know what you're thinking, "Unpredictable? My ex-girlfriend was unpredictable and she slashed my tires and slept with Ricky." That's exactly the kind of sudden, out-of-the-blue rage fueled mania the Luchadores want to capture here. The Marshals are the epitome of boring, white bread offense. They've been riding Fast Boija like a Geo Metro that just won't quit, and have ground and pounded their way to the consistently highest scoring offense in the league. The Luchadores, on the other hand, are all over the place. Led by QB Corvo Havran, they sometimes bring a high powered offense that can move the ball quickly through the air. While they haven't scored more than 21 on the road this year, the potential is there to break the trend and beat San Antonio in a shootout that the Marshals aren't designed for.

Late season waiver pickups have boosted the defense

Winning will mean shutting down Fast Boija's ground attack and forcing QB Zenyou Wozy to play through lots of pressure. Tijuana's front office has gone shopping for just that, and brought in quite the haul. Leading the group is the speedy LB Sandy Bakshi, whose 46 tackles and 3 sacks lead the league among players with 6 or fewer active games. Added into the mix are LB Johnny Slothface, the promising young Safety Richard D'Attoria, and CB Troy Bryant who has already been making an impact in coverage. With these 4 additions Tijuana's defense has gotten younger, faster, and more dangerous. Expect Dick Cheese and Sandy Bakshi to lead the charge against Fast Boija, while the defensive coordinator can be more aggressive thanks to an improved secondary and deep coverage. This team has given up just 15.4 points per game over the last 5 games of the season, if they can bring that kind of performance they will have done more than they needed to against a tough Marshals team.

Most of all, they're red hot and they want it more

There's one thing that all the stats, numbers, and analysis in the world can't tell you about football. That thing is heart. The Luchadores have seen the lowest lows and highest highs of any team this season, and now they have a chance to make their Cinderella story come true. Expect this team to come out fired up, aggressive, and fighting hard to knock the Marshals out or at least go down swinging...

...or maybe they won't. Hell, I don't know any more than you do.
