*TE Michael Rood Enters DSFL Draft - DCross - 03-06-2019

Michael Rood, tight end from the University of Minnesota, has declared for the DSFL draft.

Rood was severely undersized out of high school, weighing in at just 185 pounds as a tight end prospect. His impressive jump off the snap was able to limit his size disadvantage, but he know he'd need to put on muscle weight if we wanted to succeed at higher levels.

Most major programs balked at the prospect of a sub-200 pound tight end, but the school in his home state let him walk on and make an effort to prove himself. Rood was religious in the weight room, putting on nearly 20 pounds in his freshman year. He continued to bulk up, and now weighs in at a much more palatable 240 pounds. Rood was named starting tight end for his junior year, and held the position for 2 seasons.

Rood saw good success in the B1G as a receiving threat, especially in the endzone. Over his two years as a starter, he amassed 65 catches for 1034 yards and 18 TDs.

Rood has always had strong and reliable hands, and his speed off the line makes him a threat for quick passes where he can get the ball and secure the needed yardage. Rood has never been one to juke a defender out of his shoes or outrun pursuing DBs down the sideline, but his "do whatever it takes to get the job done" mentality clearly shines through in his game.

That passion could also be the biggest drawback to Rood - he has a tendency to take unnecessary penalties trying to cover up for minor mistakes. If Rood can keep his temper in check and keep progressing as a football player, he will no doubt find success in the DSFL - and eventually, he hopes to take on the NSFL.

Hopefully that's the case! Can't wait to get started.

I like your build a lot. The focus on hands will pay off in the short term very well and give you time to build speed, strength, and run blocking.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. A possession TE is no good if he can’t catch. Planning to use my first couple TPE gains to round out speed/strength/run blocking and then I will go back and improve hands again.
