*Post-Week 6 DSFL Award Watch - shadyshoelace - 04-03-2019

With just under half of the season in the books, we have seen a fair amount of what this historically deep DSFL draft class brings to the field. Let’s take a look at the contenders for the S14 DSFL awards:

Most Valuable Player
Leader: Morgan Marshall, RB SA
120 attempts, 624 yards (5.2 avg), 6 TD, 18 catches, 141 yards, 2 TD
Despite sharing a backfield with NSFL #1 overall pick Cooter Bigsby, Marshall has been the engine that’s powered the Marshals’ offense during their hot start to the season. He’s been leaned on heavily, and he has yet to disappoint with zero games below 100 yards from scrimmage.

Contenders:
Franklin Armstrong, QB POR
116/190 (61.1%), 1300 yards, 9 TD, 5 INT, 86.3 rating
In a league dominated by strong rushers, Armstrong has helmed an impressive aerial assault for the Pythons. Yes, he singlehandedly lost the game against San Antonio, but you can’t ignore the overall season numbers. A case could be made for Beauregard Smallwood-Chess as well, but the splits in the running game don’t give him as much of an opportunity to shine as he deserves.

Quenton Bode, LB SA
53 tackles, 3 TFL, 5 sacks, 1 INT, 4 PD
San Antonio has squeezed out a few tight wins based on great defensive play. Bode has been a consistent force in the middle of the defense, and his Swiss Army knife-style play has allowed his teammates, like Walt Green and Vander Jones, to excel and take over games in their own right.

Offensive Player of the Year
Leader: Morgan Marshall, RB SA
120 attempts, 624 yards (5.2 avg), 6 TD, 18 catches, 141 yards, 2 TD
See above.

Contenders:
Franklin Armstrong, QB POR
116/190 (61.1%), 1300 yards, 9 TD, 5 INT, 86.3 rating
See above.

Bona’beri Jones, WR POR
28 catches, 521 yards (18.3 avg), 6 TD
Jones has been the other half of the potent Pythons receiving attack. He’s head-and-shoulders above the rest of the players at his position, stretching the field and scoring at will.

Defensive Player of the Year
Leader: Quenton Bode, LB SA
53 tackles, 3 TFL, 5 sacks, 1 INT, 4 PD
See above.

Contenders:
Vander Jones, CB SA
38 tackles, 2 FF, 1 FR, 5 INT, 6 PD, 2 TD
Jones has been putting up crazy turnover stats and basically won the game by himself in Week 5, returning two interceptions for touchdowns.

Guy Nikko, LB PB
31 tackles, 1 FF, 8 sacks
A great pass-rusher is the one of the most important pieces on the football field, and Nikko has delivered brilliantly. Unfortunately, it hasn’t translated to victories for his team.

Offensive Rookie of the Year
Leader: Morgan Marshall, RB SA
120 attempts, 624 yards (5.2 avg), 6 TD, 18 catches, 141 yards, 2 TD
I hate to make it seem like Marshall is the only good offensive award pick around, because there are plenty of other deserving players. He’s just on another level from everyone else right now.

Contenders:
Franklin Armstrong, QB POR
116/190 (61.1%), 1300 yards, 9 TD, 5 INT, 86.3 rating
See above.

Ludicolo Bigby, RB PB
105 attempts, 582 yards (5.5 avg), 4 TD, 1 catch, 3 yards
With Smallwood-Chess and Jones ineligible, Bigby is next in line as the most impressive offensive rookie.

Defensive Rookie of the Year
Leader: Quenton Bode, LB SA
53 tackles, 3 TFL, 5 sacks, 1 INT, 4 PD
See above.

Contenders:
Guy Nikko, LB PB
31 tackles, 1 FF, 8 sacks
See above.

Walt Green, FS SA
31 tackles, 2 FF, 1 FR, 6 INT, 8 PD
Green took the league by storm with six picks in the first four weeks of the season, and despite not picking one up in the last two games, is on pace to shatter the single-season DSFL record of eight.

GMs of the Year
Leaders: iamslm22 and ScorpXCracker NOR
4-2, 139 PF, 117 PA
Leading a formerly bot-inhabited team to the top of the conference is really impressive. The Norfolk GMs hit on almost every pick in this deep draft class, and the results are showing on the field.

Contenders:
timeconsumer and Bwestfield SA
6-0, 165 PF, 80 PA
The Marshals have an impressive collection of new and familiar talent and their GM has done a great job devising strategies to maximize their skills. If it wasn’t for the Norfolk narrative, undefeated San Antonio would be the leader.

J.G.10 and PSanchez55 POR
4-2, 169 PF, 88 PA
Portland has had an excellent season and leads the league in points per game, yards per game, and yards per game against and is second in points per game against. At the end of the day, though, the wins column is what matters.

Quarterback of the Year
Leader: Franklin Armstrong POR
116/190 (61.1%), 1300 yards, 9 TD, 5 INT, 86.3 rating
Despite throwing a pair of pick-sixes in Week 5, Armstrong remains the top passer at this point in the season. He’s second in the league in yardage and completion percentage while leading all passers in touchdowns and passer rating.

Contenders:
Cooter Bigsby SA
87/144 (60.4%), 808 yards, 6 TD, 3 INT, 81.0 rating
The Marshals’ ground-heavy attack doesn’t give Cooter too many chances for volume stats, but he’s played smart football that has resulted in the second-highest passer rating and second-most touchdowns in the league.

Jay Longshaw NOR
87/167 (52.1%), 927 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT, 76.1 rating
You could make an argument for Rose Jenkins or Corvo Havran here as well depending on which stats you value more, but I’m going with Longshaw. Despite ranking at the bottom of the league in completion rate, he has the best TD:INT ratio and is third in yardage.

Running Back of the Year
Leader: Morgan MarshallSA
120 attempts, 624 yards (5.2 avg), 6 TD, 18 catches, 141 yards, 2 TD
Marshall is getting the heaviest workload of all DSFL running backs, and he’s making the most of his opportunities. He leads all backs in rushing yardage, is second in receiving yardage, and is tied for the lead in total touchdowns. While there are more efficient backs out there, his 5.2 yards per carry mark is respectable in its own right.

Contenders:
Beauregard Smallwood-Chess POR
72 attempts, 459 yards (6.4 avg), 6 TD, 12 catches, 114 yards
Smallwood-Chess isn’t even the most-utilized rusher on his own team, but he’s sporting the highest yards per carry average in the league and has taken an impressive six totes to the house while contributing heavily in the passing game.

Ludicolo Bigby PB
105 attempts, 582 yards (5.5 avg), 4 TD, 1 catch, 3 yards
Once again, there are a number of other contenders around Bigby’s level – Norfolk’s dynamic duo of Dorfus Jimbo and Andre Reed are both impressive, for example. Bigby is simply ahead of the pack in yardage, and his four scores are near the league lead.

Wide Receiver of the Year
Leader: Bona’beri Jones POR
28 catches, 521 yards (18.3 avg), 6 TD
Jones is the clear-cut best receiver in the DSFL to this point. He leads the league in yardage, his six touchdowns are three times as many as second place, and his 18.3 yards per reception are the most among high-volume receivers by a long shot.

Contenders:
J.N. Nova KCC
40 catches, 462 yards (11.6 avg), 2 TD
Nova is tied for the league in receptions and in second place in yardage and touchdowns. Not much controversy here.

Rod Tidwell TIJ
40 catches, 437 yards (10.9 avg), 1 TD
Once again – most catches, third-most yards. Still not close to catching Jones.

Tight End of the Year
Leader: Cameron Olsen KCC
32 catches, 231 yards (7.2 avg), 3 TD, 8 pancakes, 1 sack allowed
Olsen is tied for the positional lead in catches and touchdowns and is narrowly in second place in yardage. He’s not flashy, but he’s getting the job done for the Coyotes.

Contenders:
Chase Jensen PB
23 catches, 255 yards (11.1 avg), 1 TD, 5 pancakes, 0 sacks allowed
Jensen has been great at stretching the field for quarterback Apollo Lange, with the highest yardage total and yards per reception average of the tight end group. He’s just behind Nacho Varga as the most productive Solar Bears receiver.

Roman Stakowski POR
32 catches, 226 yards (7.1 avg), 2 TD, 15 pancakes, 1 sack allowed
Stakowski measures up well to other top tight ends in the receiving department and has been by far the most impressive blocker.

Defensive Lineman of the Year
Leader: Nero Alexander SA
18 tackles, 6 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 safety
The limited stats for defensive linemen make it a little harder to pull specific ones away from the pack, but Alexander’s stats speak for themselves. He’s tied for the position lead in tackles, leads all linemen in sacks, is third in tackles for loss, and is one of two to record a safety. The only thing missing is turnover generation, something that no other defensive lineman has done either.

Contenders:
Mick Moekr KCC
18 tackles, 6 TFL, 3 sacks
One fewer sack and safety than Alexander, but Moekr brings a great blend of run stuffing and pass rushing to the KC defense.

Lo Mein TIJ
15 tackles, 10 TFL
Despite an inability to get to the quarterback, Lo Mein has shown great power to drive back blockers and blow up plays in the backfield. He leads all linemen in tackles for loss.

Linebacker of the Year
Leader: Quenton Bode SA
53 tackles, 3 TFL, 5 sacks, 1 INT, 4 PD
Bode has done it all for a Marshals defense that’s allowed the fewest points in the league. He ranks in the top three among linebackers in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, and interceptions and fourth in pass deflections. If he can generate a few more turnovers, he could continue to rise in a crowded position group.

Contenders:
Guy Nikko PB
31 tackles, 1 FF, 8 sacks
Nikko has really only served as a pass-rusher for Palm Beach, but he’s excelled in that role. He leads all defenders in sacks, and is the only player with more than five.

Allen Josh NOR
46 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 6 PD
Josh has stuffed the stat sheet in the same vein as Bode, just to a slightly lesser degree. He’s been the top pass-defending linebacker so far. Don’t sleep on his teammate Marquees Acho or Kansas City’s Buddha Lebowski, who are both putting up very similar stats and are the only linebackers to record a touchdown and a safety, respectively.

Defensive Back of the Year
Leader: Vander Jones SA
38 tackles, 2 FF, 1 FR, 5 INT, 6 PD, 2 TD
His Marshals teammate Walt Green has grabbed most of the headlines after a blistering start to the season, but Jones has come on strong in recent weeks. He’s generating turnovers at a high rate, and his two interception return touchdowns off of Franklin Armstrong vault him to the top spot.

Contenders:
Walt Green SA
31 tackles, 2 FF, 1 FR, 6 INT, 8 PD
Listed as a free safety, the Marshals have been playing Green as a cornerback and it’s paid off. He’s has been tremendous in coverage, leading all players in interceptions and pass breakups while also generating fumbles.

Logan Uchiha NOR
43 tackles, 6 TFL, 1 FF, 1 sack, 2 INT, 3 PD
Uchiha is the top-performing safety in the league with a well-rounded game. He’s stopping players in the backfield and downfield while cleaning up whatever gets past the front seven. His versatility just gives him the edge over Richard D’Attoria V, who’s been forcing turnovers and getting to the quarterback better than any other defensive back.

Kicker of the Year
Spencer Lawes SA
16/17 XP (94.1%), 15/16 FG (93.8%)
Lawes has attempted the most kicks this season and is hitting at the best rate in the league. Even more impressive? He’s seven-of-seven from beyond 40 yards.

Alex Dasistwirklichseinnachname POR
18/19 XP (94.7%), 7/8 FG (87.5%)
His only missed kick has been a 49-yarder, which can be forgiven. Other than that, he’s been reliable for a potent Python team.

Stephen Harris Jr TIJ
9/10 XP (90%), 9/12 FG (75%)
The percentage isn’t pretty, but he has the longest make of the season at 50 yards and his misses have been from 40, 44, and 56 yards. That puts him ahead of Cameron Clutch, who has similar stats but has missed from 32.

Punter of the Year
Spencer Lawes SA
17 punts, 822 yards (48.4 avg), 5 inside 20
Lawes has the second-highest punting average and has downed almost a third of his punts inside the twenty yard line.

Roderick Castleberry PB
14 punts, 723 yards, (51.6 avg)
Castleberry hasn’t pinned the opponent inside the twenty yet, but that’s more a function of the offense’s inability to drive downfield than his own ability. He has the highest punting average and boasts the longest punt of the season (65 yards).

Stephen Harris Jr TIJ
23 punts, 1020 yards (44.3 avg), 5 inside 20
Harris has had a solid punting season, with a 0.1 yard per punt lead over Alex D. to claim this spot.

Performance of the Year
Leader: Dorfus Jimbo & Apollo Reed, Week 1 NOR
36 attempts, 242 yards (6.7 avg), 4 TD
I don’t know if it’s technically allowable to give this award to two players, but Jimbo and Reed came out with a bang to announce to the world that Norfolk is ready to compete. Jimbo had the majority of the yards but Reed punched in three touchdowns, so it’s impossible to pick which was more valuable.

Contenders:
Vander Jones, Week 5 SA
6 tackles, 1 FF, 2 INT, 3 PD, 2 TD
Jones put on what is indisputably the finest defensive performance of the year so far in a battle between two of the top teams in the league. His two scores off three turnovers were the difference in what was ultimately a one-score game.

Beauregard Smallwood-Chess, Week 4 POR
9 attempts, 145 yards (16.1 avg), 2 TD, 1 catch, 6 yards
145 yards is the most one running back has put up in a single game this season, and Smallwood-Chess did it on just nine carries. His 90-yard score put the Pythons on top of the Coyotes with three minutes remaining and allowed them to come away with the win.

Note: If your player wasn't mentioned, I'm really sorry. There are a ton of awesome players and performances this season, and at many positions it was super difficult to pick just a few (and many of the awards lend themselves to repeat picks). The season is still young, and there's plenty of time for players to rise and fall!

Really well-done article! Glad to see some of my Solar Bears teammates getting some love. Hopefully we have a few more on the list by the end of the season.

Thanks for the mention! Soon I’ll get a spot myself #FearTheFleet

AWESOME article man, but Chase Jensen will be winning TE of the year... put your bet on it now.

*Post-Week 6 DSFL Award Watch - terriblehippo - 04-03-2019

I'm honestly shocked that my name shows up so frequently, especially in the MVP conversation. The DSFL has a lot of great players this year, so I'll be surprised if I actually end up winning any of these awards in the end. But I'm glad to be considered for them at all.

Great write-up, and I'm excited to see how the rest of the season plays out!

@shadyshoelace with another awesome writeup, great stuff man

Fantastic work!

I am curious though, what metric are you using to determine that Bode should be ahead of Vander Jones in DPotY and MVP? Turnovers are far more valuable than sacks, and that's not even considering his 2 TDs.

Honestly that's what surprised me the most about this article. Jones is going to shatter the single-season INT record, and he's scored 2 TDs off of picks. I've been playing well, but the way he's been playing is nothing short of phenomenal. He should absolutely be in the MVP conversation.

EDIT: Got Jones and Walt Green mixed up :\

Not going argue Jones should be a head of me in award rankings. However I’m still ahead in int numbers. Don’t count me out of the record race yet.
